(CNN) — Health experts are doubling down on pleas for all eligible Americans to get vaccinated — and boosted — against Covid-19 as the Omicron and Delta variants spread. Less than two weeks after Omicron was first identified by South African scientists, it’s already become the dominant variant in that country and has been identified in at least 20 nations. It’s too early to tell whether Omicron is more contagious than Delta, which is still the dominant variant in the US. But the Delta variant is already fueling another increase in Covid-19 hospitalizations in some states as the weather gets colder and people spend more time indoors. Despite several unknowns about the Omicron strain, doctors say booster shots are the best weapon against Omicron, Delta and even more variants down the road. Here’s why: Boosters have worked well against other new variants Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson are testing the efficacy of their vaccines against the Omicron strain, and it might be two weeks before the results are known. But Dr. Anthony Fauci said there’s plenty of reason to...

IF you're expecting to mainly live on Social Security benefits in retirement, it's especially important to know how much you'll get. Social Security payments are based on your salary during your working career, at what age you claim and how long you've worked for. 1We explain how much you'll get in Social Security in retirement depending on your salaryCredit: Getty In 2022, the maximum monthly payment will be $4,194, while the average benefit will sit at a lower to $1,657. To help you know how much you can expect, we've calculated monthly benefits based on a number of circumstances. It's important to note that only the 35 years with the highest income count towards your Social Security benefit. It means it's important to work for at least 35 years if possible, or you'll have $0 factored into your benefits calculation for each year you're missing an income. You can start claiming as early as possible, but it's often better to wait until your full retirement age (FRA), which is when you can claim your benefit in full. If you were...

The largest Social Security cost-of-living adjustment increase in decades is set to go into effect in 2022. The 5.9% pay bump was meant to help seniors cover the cost of rising inflation. STRUGGLING homeowners may be wondering what support is available - and whether there's a mortgage stimulus program. It comes as Americans have got used to receiving stimulus checks during the coronavirus crisis. We explain what you need to know. 1Homeowners may be wondering if there's a mortgage stimulus programCredit: Getty Is there a mortgage stimulus program? There’s no current mortgage stimulus program from Congress with that exact name, but federal funds have been made available to help homeowners. This is known as the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF), which was part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Act. The fund provides nearly $10billion for states, the District of Columbia, as well as other US territories. These funds can be used for assistance with mortgage payments, homeowner’s insurance, utility payments, and more. STRUGGLING Americans could receive a $1,800 boost by the end of this year as part of the expanded child tax credit payments. It’s the last tolerated prejudice. But Femail’s had enough. It’s time we called out those day-to-day moments when we’re patronised for no longer being young... Sexism and ageism are two ‘isms’ that can’t help being constantly conflated. I was thinking this upon reading that 52-year-old actor Paul Rudd has recently been voted Sexiest Man Alive by the U.S. celebrity weekly People Magazine. Don’t get me wrong, I find Rudd terribly attractive, but would The Sexiest Woman Alive award ever go to a woman of 52? And if People did go out on a limb and do that, can you imagine the judgment it would incite? Paul Rudd, 52, (pictured) has recently been voted Sexiest Man Alive by U.S. celebrity weekly People magazine It’s such a pernicious double standard and yet it persists because society, however inclusive it thinks it is, has a block about accepting that women past reproductive age can be thought of as ‘sexy’. In my opinion, this primitive notion that women stop being sexy at a certain age is what links us more to animals than humans,...

With the holidays approaching, there is a growing push to get more adults their booster shots in hopes of strengthening immunity and warding off a potential winter COVID-19 surge. By comparison, roughly 25 million people are thought to be fully vaccinated statewide.Who is eligible for a booster now? Federal guidance says adults can get a booster if they are at increased risk of COVID-19 exposure because of where they work or live. Traditionally, the “increased risk” criteria outlined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been applied to those who work in places such as hospitals, schools, grocery stores or factories — or those who live in congregate settings like prisons or homeless shelters. But the wording of the recently issued criteria is broad, and some health officials, including in California, are now increasingly pointing out that it can be interpreted in a much more expansive way. Q I’m 67 with fairly good skin but I have tiny red capillaries on both of my cheeks. Do you have any suggestions please? A You need light or laser treatments to cauterise the veins (the light energy penetrates the vein and causes it to collapse). It feels like tiny rubber band snaps against the skin, with a few days of minimal swelling and some potential crusting afterwards. Most veins will be gone after a week and stay away. An anonymous reader asked Inge Van Lotringen for advice to reduce the appearance of tiny red capillaries on both of their cheeks (file image) The right option depends on your skin colour, condition and the appearance of the veins, so select a specialist with multiple vascular lasers and treatment devices so as not to make the situation worse. To me, the perfect White Elephant gift is one part funny and one part functional. With the low price point and the universal nature of the gift, you gotta get creative, but you also want people to covet it — or, at the very least, actually use it. Of course, a White Elephant gift shouldn't be overly expensive (a price range and/or budget is usually agreed upon beforehand) and it also needs to be versatile and lighthearted enough to please just about anyone in the group (this is especially important if you're doing an office White Elephant party with your colleauges). For instance, a White Elephant party with your close group of friends may warrant a silly (and even slightly scnadalous) gift, but that's not going to fly at a gift exchange with your extended fmaily, coworkers, and sometimes, even complete strangers. Alas, for most situations, you need something with universal appeal that's not too niche, yet not too generic either. There are many different directions that you could go with White Elephant gifts, so we thought we’d...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Rolling Stones were live in concert downtown Minneapolis last night, after a year-long delay. The concert was not quite a sellout but it was still a big turnout for Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the Stones. The show actually went on past midnight. WCCO caught up with some happy fans after the show. “It was absolutely amazing. We drove in from Milwaukee, and these guys have so much energy for their age,” Tom Tabolier said. “They played an amazing set list, loved every bit of it. Just amazing.” “It was like one big dance party. It was great,” Julie Fletcher, from Idaho, said. “I saw them in 1981. It was just like it was 1981 again. They were perfect.” It seems like Mick Jagger might’ve been out enjoying Minnesota staples. Star Tribune music critic Chris Riemenschneider tweeted that, apparently, Jagger was out and about tasting some Juicy (or, if you prefer, Jucy) Lucy burgers — one at Matt’s Bar and another at the 5-8 Club. "I had two Jucy Lucys here: One at Matts Bar and...

As the old adage goes, the children of the revolution always eat the fathers of the revolution, and comedian Ricky Gervais looks forward to the day when the children of today’s woke generation call their parents fascist. Speaking with neuroscientist and proud atheist Sam Harris on his Absolutely Mental podcast, Gervis said that he hopes to live “long enough” to see today’s woke generation get a brutal scolding from their children. “I want to live long enough to see the younger generation not be woke enough for the next generation. It’s going to happen,” Gervais said. “Don’t they realize that it’s like, they’re next? That’s what’s funny.” “We kicked out the old guard. We did it. There’s only so woke and liberal you can get and then you start going the other way. But it’s inevitable,” he added. Gervias has been an outspoken opponent of cancel culture and political correctness for several years now, starting when he upset the LGBTQ community by joking about Caitlyn Jenner during his opening Golden Globes opening monologue in 2016. A NEW genetic test that uses your saliva could predict if you will get severe Covid-19. The £130 test looks at age, sex, weight and general health, as well as the genes linked to the severity of the virus. 1Traditional coronavirus swabs detect whether or not you have the virus - but a new test could predict your risk of how severely you might suffer with the illnessCredit: Getty Writing in the the journal Epidemiology and Infection experts said an accurate test to predict risk of severe Covid-19 can inform prioritisation of further vaccine doses to those most at risk. They highlighted that it could be useful in regions in which vaccination is not widespread enough to provide herd immunity. The tests work by looking at genes that up your risk of severe Covid. Experts then combine this with information with underlying health conditions which are known to make people more vulnerable to Covid such as respiratory conditions and high blood pressure. By using this information the experts were able to predict with 73 per cent accuracy who was most...
