New York (CNN Business)Many Americans are shopping small Saturday to support mom-and-pop clothing, toy, furniture, sporting goods, hardware and electronics' stores. But this year's Small Business Saturday promotion is unlikely to change the fortunes of independent shops in America, which have diverged dramatically from their larger rivals.Small retailers have been squeezed out throughout the pandemic and are at a significant disadvantage navigating the current supply chain crisis, rising inflation and the shortage of workers, said retail analysts and supply chain experts.First, as Covid-19 spread last year, many small shops did not meet the criteria of "essential" businesses and had to close down. Their larger competitors such as Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), Costco (COST), Home Depot (HD) and others were able to stay open. Labor shortage? Not at TargetWith smaller retailers closed and spending on travel and leisure at a standstill, these major chains boomed as Americans stocked up on groceries, household basics, office supplies and furniture during stay-at-home mandates.Read MoreMeanwhile, the pandemic caused roughly 200,000 more small businesses to close in the first year of the pandemic than in a...
BLACK Friday deals are here and it can be overwhelming seeing the same products at your favorite retailers. We did the homework for you and price compared some of the best deals. 16Retailers are offering deep discounts on Black Friday The National Retail Federation says nearly two million more people than last year are expected to shop from Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday this year. Most major retailers kept their stores closed on Thanksgiving but online shopping was available 24/7. This year, one in 10 Americans expect to splurge between $750 and $1,000 in the sale bonanza, according to a study by consumer research platform Attest. Meanwhile, 22% of the respondents plan to spend between $300 and $500 and 21% reckon they'll spend between $200 and $300 on deals. Jeremy King, chief executive and founder of Attest, told The Sun:“Our research highlights that in many Americans’ minds Black Friday is the best day of the year to bag a bargain. "Yet our survey does reveal that consumers have fatigue from month-long, extended sales bonanzas and want Black Friday to become...
MANY of your favorite stores will be closed on Thanksgiving ahead of Black Friday. Popular big box stores like Target and Walmart decided months ago they're giving their employees a day off to spend with family. 1Several popular retailers will remain closed on Thanksgiving, including WalmartCredit: Getty Target's CEO going a step further Monday saying it will close all its stores on Thanksgiving every year from 2021 on. Simon Malls, one of the nation's largest mall operators, announced in October that its malls and properties will stay closed on Thanksgiving Day. That means popular retailers within those malls will be closed. Stores such as Claire's, Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret and Sephora are just a few examples. Target announced in January 2021 that its stores will be closed on Thanksgiving, making it one of the first retailers to make that decision. In June, Walmart said all its stores will be closed for the second year in a row as a thank you to Walmart employees. Soon after Walmart's announcement, Best Buy said they will remain closed on Thanksgiving....
In this article WMT TGT Getty ImagesWalmart and Target put up strong third-quarter performances this week, beat Wall Street's expectations and spoke of holiday shoppers already starting to splurge on gifts and gatherings this season. Yet the investor response was swift: A brutal sell-off. Target shares were down about 5% Wednesday. Walmart closed down nearly 3% on Tuesday, after its earnings report. Shares continued to drop Wednesday, erasing all its gains year-to-date. The two sides are at odds on the retailers' strategy of absorbing some of the rising costs of shipping, labor and materials rather than passing them on to customers with higher prices. Both Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Target CEO Brian Cornell have drawn a clear line. Their strategy: Keep prices low in a bid for customer loyalty — even if it means a hit to profits. The pushback they're hearing is: Why not charge shoppers more? Americans have had a ravenous appetite for shopping. They socked away money during the pandemic and the holiday forecasts are rosy. McMillon said Walmart must uphold its reputation...

Births of new babies are up. Pregnancy tests are selling at a higher rate. And more couples say they are trying to have a baby, according to the company's research. That could spell good news for grocers, big-box stores and warehouse clubs that sell diapers, strollers and other baby merchandise — or simply are located closer to suburban homes where new parents may settle, according to Robby Ohmes, a equity research analyst. He predicted the baby boom could start this year. Among the beneficiaries, he called out: Albertsons, Kroger, Dollar General and BJ's Wholesale Club. Cora and Stefan Miller started a hair care company after they had their son, Kade, and struggled to find hair products for him. Young King Hair Care is now sold by Walmart and Target. When Cora Miller had her son, she discovered the baby had a full head of hair — and found few products on the market to style it. A lot of gels, mousses and creams smelled like fruit and flowers or came in pink bottles. That search inspired Cora Miller and her husband, Stefan, to start their own company, Young King Hair Care. They designed the line of plant-based, natural hair products with little Black boys like their son in mind, and launched the product just before his third birthday. "I really wanted my son to see himself in the products he uses," said Cora Miller, the company's co-founder and CEO. "It was a bugging, nagging feeling about this that wouldn't go away." Young King is now on the shelves of two of the country's largest retailers, Walmart and Target. It is among the growing number of...

The PlayStation 5 launches on Thursday, and buyers who pre-order the PS5 or PS5 digital version will receive consoles at home. Stores will begin to sell more PS5 shares, although supply is expected to be lower. Retailers will not sell the PS5 at retail locations, but only online. Both Walmart and Target will save two PS5 versions on launch day.
