NEW YORK (AP) — The new Imagine Dragons album cover depicts a man falling through space, gravity gently pulling him down. Inside is the sound of a man grappling with his own fall. Lead singer, songwriter and lyricist Dan Reynolds has poured heartache, tragedy and his struggles with sobriety into the raw, confessional and searing “Mercury — Act 1,” a brave album from a band refusing to retreat into past hits. “In a lot of ways I felt like my foundation was completely ripped from under me over the last decade. I spent a lot of my time embracing that self-pity and wallowing in it,” he says from his home in Las Vegas. “This record is primarily about taking action and rebuilding.” The 13-track collection uses Reynolds’ falsetto to great effect to explore different sonic landscapes, and his lyrics ache with a portrait of a man who has lost friends to cancer, had his personal life collapse and battled depression and addiction. “I’m finding it hard to love myself,” he sings on ”My Life.” On “Lonely,” he offers: “These days,...

D&D finished today! I’m still alive! It remains to be seen what Paramount’s approach to the new film will be, whether it will simply set it in a fantasy world or take more direct ideas from the existing canon. Wrapped D&D today! Dragonlance co-creators Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis have voluntarily dismissed their $10 million lawsuit against Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast. In 2020 the pair alleged breach of contract related to a new series of novels set in their famous role-playing universe. How exactly the disagreement has been resolved is unknown. News Brig has reached out to all parties for more information. The Dragonlance Chronicles originated at TSR in the 1980s with Dragons of Autumn Twilight, spawning additional books and RPG supplements set in the high-fantasy world of Krynn. The novels star iconic characters such as Tanis Half-Elven, Raistlin, Flint Fireforge, and Goldmoon — all of which have been largely absent from the reinvigorated 5th edition of D&D. Court documents had claimed that Hickman and Weis were approached in 2017 by Wizards to write a new series of novels. Negotiations included a new licensing agreement between the authors and the publisher, plus an additional agreement with Del Rey Books. Novels titled Dragons of Deceit and Dragons of Fate had already been completed, with a third manuscript...

The location — and its curmudgeonly proprietor, Durnan — have been featured in multiple campaign books published for D&D’s 5th edition, including Tales from the Yawning Portal, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage. Publisher Wizards of the Coast also used the inn as the online home of its new virtual organized play initiative. In June Wizards of the Coast announced that its next published adventure would take players to the Forgotten Realms’ frozen north to battle a mysterious force of nature. The campaign was published on schedule and was received well by critics — including here at News Brig. Shortly after that announcement, the team at Beadle & Grimm’s revealed Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden Platinum Edition — the latest in its line of limited edition deluxe boxed sets. What could possibly be included in a D&D adventure to warrant a $499 price tag? It was a closely guarded secret until packages began shipping in early November. I’m surprised to say that it’s totally worth it. I’ve been running games as a Dungeon Master regularly since the launch of 4th edition back in 2008, and I’ve always had two main goals. First, I want to draw my players into the game with the use of both tactical combat encounters and rich storytelling. Sometimes that means making props and handouts — like a leather journal showing the original David Sutherland drawings...
Entertainment : The followers of Inon Zur bet on Starfield, although it is a total unknown. Without a doubt, the Israeli composer Inon Zur is among the longest-running musical talents in the video game industry. It gave shape and content to the soundtracks of numerous installments of series such as Dragon Age, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls or even Dragon’s Dogma, to name a few. His debut in the Next Generation video game will come from the hand of Outriders, Square Enix and People Can Fly, but it will not stop there. Neither short nor lazy, he has announced through his Twitter account that he is already working on “a huge game of new generation “, accompanying the publication with a couple of photographs of the orchestra that he conducts on this occasion. Although his followers have not hesitated to try to zoom in on the images in search of any clue about this mysterious project, for now no one seems to have found a firm conclusion on the matter. That hasn’t stopped anyone from...

The Overwatch League is currently in its off-season, which means that professional teams are shuffling up their rosters. Among these releases and re-signings comes the announcement that Se-yeon “Geguri” Kim is leaving the Shanghai Dragons. Kim is a famous tank player, best known for being the first female pro in the Overwatch League. When she was 17, she was accused of aimbotting due to her stellar performance on the hero Zarya. Geguri gave a live performance of her skills, and was cleared by Blizzard of any charges. She was signed by the Shanghai Dragons in 2018 after playing in the South Korean APEX scene. South Korean feminist groups used Geguri as a symbol for a brief time, but later dropped her name and image from their marketing and social media at Geguri’s request. She was also named as a “Next Generation Leader” by TIME Magazine in 2019. Despite being such a prominent face on the Dragons, Geguri hasn’t seen much stage time recently. However, she intends to continue with her Overwatch career, and it’ll be interesting to see where...
I’m not one for geeky kitchen accessories. You’ll never catch me with an Enterprise-shaped pizza cutter for instance, or using a carving knife that looks like a laser sword. Likewise, I’m picky about my recipes, which I prefer in two varieties: hand-written on a notecard by someone’s grandparent, or drawn out for roughly 50,000 words. That’s partly why I’m always a bit skeptical about geeky cookbooks. The recipes I find inside are rarely all that interesting, and feel either dumbed down or a bit too frilly. A new offering from 10 Speed Press succumbs to neither of those pitfalls. Titled Heroes’ Feast: The Official Dungeons & Dragons Cookbook, it’s 212 pages of high-quality comfort food — plus a heaping helping of D&D lore. I smoked a ham we’d had in the freezer with hickory for three hours, then brushed on a honey and pineapple glaze from the chapter on Halfling Cuisine. My house still smells amazing.Photo: Katie Hall/News Brig The lore starts with the name of the book itself, which refers to a...
Authors Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis are suing Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast for breach of contract. According to court documents, the pair were working on a new trilogy of novels set in the Dragonlance universe, and at least one manuscript had received approval when the publisher pulled the plug on the project. Hickman and Weis are seeking damages in excess of $10 million. The Dragonlance Chronicles began at D&D’s original publisher TSR in the 1980s. The novelization kicked off in 1984 with the publication of Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and the original trilogy was rounded out with Dragons of Winter Night and Dragons of Spring Dawning. The action takes place in the high-fantasy world of Krynn, and stars characters such as Tanis Half-Elven, Raistlin, Flint Fireforge, and Goldmoon. The franchise also included numerous tabletop role-playing adventures that were designed and published contemporaneously. According to documents filed in a United States District Court on Oct. 16, Hickman and Weis allege that in 2017 they were approached by Wizards to write a new series of novels. A...

On Tuesday, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the 2021 roadmap for Magic: The Gathering in a live presentation on YouTube. In it, the company revealed new details on the Zendikar Rising set due out this month. Plus, Wizards announced a crossover for the ages — the first set of Magic cards based on Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms. You can watch the full presentation archived on YouTube, and embedded below. A flashy new trailer for Zendikar Rising was also shown. We’ve embedded it above, but you can also find it on YouTube. In the past, Wizards has put time and treasure into creating Magic-themed content for D&D. That effort began in 2016 with the plane of Zendikar, when the publisher released a free-to-download sourcebook for the popular RPG. Since then, Wizards has made many more settings available as fully produced, free D&D sourcebooks, including Plane Shift: Innistrad, Plane Shift: Amonkhet, Plane Shift: Kaladesh, and Plane Shift: Ixalan. There’s even an adventure available for download, X Marks The Spot, set in Ixalan that you can get for free. The effort...
Mother Jones illustration; Getty For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters. An occasional series about stuff that’s getting us through a pandemic. More here. On Friday evenings, after 9 p.m., I’m referred to strictly as Vernal Pool, the druid water genasi, by some old high school friends, and—for a few hours—everything makes sense. Challenges are straightforward and accomplished in tidy, three-hour blocks. Enemies are dealt damage and, eventually, perish. Surprises are choreographed. Randomness is present but bounded—nothing more than the probabilities suggested by a virtual 20-sided die. In Dungeons & Dragons, everything pretty much goes as planned.  In the real world, the pressing themes—pandemic, climate change, state-sanctioned brutality, the government’s emphatic disinterest in functioning properly—lend themselves to a darker, more surreal plot. It is serious. We’re holed up in our homes. The absence of bars, physical workspaces, and cheap baseball tickets from our lives creates a sense of confused inertia. Are we a tenth of the way through the pandemic or halfway? Are we actually getting anywhere, or are we stuck in the last season of Lost?...
Remember the Dragon’s Dogma adaptation that Netflix announced last year? Well, it’s still in the works. If you’ve been wondering what a TV adaptation of the hack-and-slash game might look like, good news: there’s now a short trailer to feast your eyes on. It focuses on Ethan, a brooding warrior type that seemingly lost everything to a fire-breathing dragon. With the help of a Pawn — the original game’s term for a player-assisting character — he seeks vengeance against the creature and, along the way, unlocks some kind of demonic power. “For when you fight a monster… you just may become one too,” the video description on YouTube teases. Dragon’s Dogma was originally released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. An upgraded version called Dark Arisen has since been released for both consoles, as well as PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The TV show has a CG-based anime look similar to Knights of Sidonia, another Netflix original. It’s being put together by Sublimation, a company that contributed CG animation to Evangelion: 3.0 You Can...
Dungeons & Dragons’ newest campaign book, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, arrives on Sept. 15. To celebrate, publisher Wizards of the Coast will be hosting a three-day online gaming event called D&D Celebration. Unlike previous events, it won’t be limited to those who can attend in person. In fact, it will allow players around the world to participate virtually in the biggest D&D game ever played. Over the course of the Sept. 18-20 weekend, players and fans will be able to watch gameplay, community-led panels, and announcements. The event will also include more information about the just-announced Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything rulebook. Image: Wizards of the Coast Online games will also be available on all three days of D&D Celebration, run by the D&D Adventurers League, Wizards’ official organized play group. Welcome to io9’s look back at the Dungeons & Dragons novels of yore, where I read these classic fantasy books to see what treasures might still lie within… and what horrors, too. When I proposed this project to Jill, I always knew I’d have to start with the book that first hooked me as a fantasy-loving, 11-year-old nerd: 1988’s The Crystal Shard. While it’s not the first D&D novel—nor even the first novel set in the immensely popular, by-the-numbers fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms—it holds two important distinctions. It was the first-ever novel by the best-selling author R.A. Salvatore, and it introduced arguably the most famous and beloved D&D character of all time, Drizzt Do’Urden. If you’ve ever...
He may only come once a year to deliver presents - but young children believe in Father Christmas more than ghosts, dragons and aliens. Two in five even thought they had seen jolly Saint Nick in 'real life', as many as said they had seen favourite children's music group The Wiggles.  Dinosaurs and the Tooth Fairy - who replaces baby teeth with a shiny £1 coin - were also ranked as more real by children, with cartoon characters including Princess Elsa seen as non-real fictional characters. Scientists said Father Christmas may appear more real to Children because of cultural traditions - such as leaving out milk and cookies that 'vanish' by the morning Children aged between two and 11 were asked to mark 13 characters out of eight, with zero meaning not real and eight meaning extremely real. Their results are shown above In the study researchers asked 176 Australian children, aged between two and 11, and 56 adults, to rate how real they considered 13 different figures ranging from actual people to cartoon characters. They would mark...
