DEAR MISS MANNERS: My daughter married into a very nice family. They are a fairly small group, as are we, so we have celebrated holidays together since our children married, usually alternating hosting. We did this on Thanksgiving and I hosted. I prepared the same meal I would’ve prepared regardless — and, yes, it represents a great deal of work, which I am happy to do. When they host, however, it’s a more modest repast, not because of finances, but simply because they don’t have much interest in cooking or baking. I was concerned, after one or two of these frozen-chicken-cutlet, can-of-mixed-vegetables events, that they would feel we were showing off; they have sometimes looked a bit astounded at our table. BALTIMORE (WJZ) — It’s the sizzle inside a kitchen we all love to hear on the fourth Thursday of November. True Chesapeake Oyster Co. doesn’t have any of the traditional Thanksgiving fixings on its menu, but on Monday, they’re cooking for an effort that’s bigger than them. READ MORE: Governor Hogan Honors Those Killed by Impaired Drivers at 18th Annual Maryland Remembers CeremonyThiru Vignarajah, the Baltimore City mayoral candidate, has decided to help out. “True Chesapeake and Local Oyster were two restaurants who got hit hard during the pandemic, but they were prepared to step up because they know how hard it’s been,” he said The Bea Gaddy Family Center is the recipient of all this hard work, including the slicing and dicing of the side dishes to feed 2,000 people in need. According to the publication it had been Mr. Lui’s mum who had set up the meeting after becoming concerned about his lack of dating life. In a hope to impress his date, Mr. Lui had agreed to pay for the meal, not realising that her entire extended family would be joining them. The woman then explained to local media that she had wanted to test her date’s generosity before...

A third of British families have fewer than half their evening meals together each week. A study of 2,000 parents with children at home found working hours, kids getting hungry earlier than adults and after school clubs, all have an impact on dinnertimes.  2Families are struggling to have more family meals together due to busy schedulesCredit: Getty And 30 per cent only manage three or less of their evening meals together during the typical week. More than a quarter of parents also serve up different dishes, with an average of three meals being cooked each evening.  Similarly, households typically have two sittings for food during hectic dinnertimes. It emerged children’s bedtimes, differing food preferences and lack of space are also reasons for families not sitting down at the same time to eat. Sarah Hanley, a spokesperson for Old El Paso, which carried out the research as part of its Fajita Friday campaign, said: “It’s a shame to see how little time families spend together around the dinner table. “But we know it’s a reality of busy family lives to struggle...

Ralph's is the oldest Italian restaurant in the US. Frank Olito/ Insider Located in Philadelphia, Ralph's opened in 1900 and is the oldest Italian restaurant in the US. On a Saturday, I scored a reservation and had one of the best dinners I've eaten in a while.  The chicken Parm reminded me of my Italian grandmother's home-cooked meals.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Growing up in an Italian family, all my family gatherings were centered around food. My grandmother taught me at a young age what a good sauce is supposed to taste like and how to properly salt a pot of water for pasta.  Throughout the years, it has been a challenge to find great Italian food at restaurants that can rival my grandmother's cooking, so when I stumbled upon Ralph's, a restaurant in Philadelphia that claims to be the oldest Italian restaurant in the US, I was skeptical. By the end of the meal, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find a delicious, home-cooked meal in the heart of a big city.
