During an appearance on "Fox & Friends Weekend" on Saturday morning, a number of leaders of American-based companies that are producing American-made products shared their wares just in time for Christmas shopping this year — and all of these products are noteworthy. And guess what? You may have just discovered the answer to the age-old holiday dilemma around this time of year, which goes something like this: "I have no idea what to buy for [Mom, Dad, my sister, my brother, my aunt, my best friend, my neighbor, my grandparents] for Christmas!" So help is here. And as a bonus, you'd be helping others as well.  Got Your Six Coffee, out of Springfield, Missouri, is dedicated to assisting our veterans and many others who put their lives on the line day in and day out to serve and protect their fellow Americans. (Got Your Six Coffee Co.) "Our mission," the company says, "is service to those who serve."  It also explains, "Through the sale of freshly roasted, award-winning gourmet coffee and amazing relationships with incredible companies, sponsors, and partners,...
When it comes to supporting our unhoused neighbors, people can turn a cold shoulder very, very quickly. No matter the reason (or, most likely, reasons) someone is experiencing homelessness, they always deserve dignity, respect, and a safe space to live. Unfortunately in the United States, we know unhoused people are routinely excluded and left on the (sometimes literal) outskirts. It’s a considerable domino effect—it’s hard to get a job, for example, but it’s even harder if you don’t have clean clothes, a place to shower, or a stable place to sleep. While all unhoused folks deserve support, it’s accurate to point out the (sometimes surprising) fact that many unhoused people in the U.S. are actually veterans. Many live with disabilities, including PTSD from the military. In a breath of good news (though not a substitute for systemic policy changes), as covered by local outlet KSBW, a former resort in Ben Lomond, California, is one step closer to providing affordable, permanent housing to homeless veterans and their families. The property—once Jaye’s Timberland Resort, and now becoming a Veterans Village—currently has a...
Joseph Augustine knows what it is like to hit rock bottom. Traumatized by his stint in the U.S. Navy in the early 1980s — where he said he experienced extreme racism and physical and mental abuse, and was denied the opportunity to attend a financial school because he is Black — the now 61-year-old Richmond resident avoided contacting Veterans Affairs for more than three decades, during which he became homeless and broke. But finally inspired by his beloved fiancé, who died earlier this year from cancer, he reached out to the VA in Martinez in 2017, initiating assistance that continues to this day. The VA referred him in August 2020 to the Berkeley Food and Housing Project, whose Roads Home program has been supporting veterans and their families since 2011 through Supportive Services for Veteran Families, a VA program BFHP administers. He is now classified as a disabled veteran and through the VA and the Roads Home project has a social worker and is receiving medical assistance. He’s also gotten the financial benefits he is entitled to. RICHMOND, CALIFORNIA –...
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – What do former professional athletes and combat veterans have in common? It turns out, a lot more than you might think. READ MORE: North Texas Shoppers Prepare To Take What They Can Get On Black FridayA nonprofit is bringing them together to help people from both transition to life outside of a uniform. “I think the hardest part is when you take the uniform off,” said Ben Derry, who served in the Air Force as an aircraft maintenance officer from 2007 to 2015. “You lose a bit of your identity.” Derry spent a year in Afghanistan, earned a Bronze Star and deployed to West Africa in 2014 to help fight the Ebola outbreak. “I have great civilian friends, but you lose the ability to have conversations with them,” he said. “It took a couple of years of going through that and not really knowing what I needed. Derry found what he needed through a nonprofit called Merging Vets and Players, or MVP. The group, made up of combat veterans and former professional athletes, meets weekly for a...
(CNN)President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are heading to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on Monday afternoon to hold a "Friendsgiving" celebration with military service members and their families. Speaking during Friday's turkey pardoning at the White House, Biden thanked first responders and essential personnel, adding that "on Monday, my wife Jill and I will be traveling to Fort Bragg in North Carolina for an early Thanksgiving with the troops and their military families. We'll be able to show the nation's gratitude for their service and sacrifice and welcome those coming home after 20 years in Afghanistan."The first couple's visit is part of the Joining Forces initiative -- a White House initiative to support military personnel, their families and veterans.Earlier this month, Jill Biden joined former Sen. Elizabeth Dole, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough for a Joining Forces event at the White House highlighting military caregiving families ahead of Veterans Day. After an eight-day trial at the Federal Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, and following three days of deliberations, a jury found Omar Shaquille Bailey and Ronaldo Garfield Green guilty for their roles in a scheme to defraud the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Administration of over $1.8 million.  Senior District Court Judge James I. Cohn read the jury’s verdict and ordered the defendants imprisoned while they await sentencing in January. A third co-defendant, Jamare Mason, pled guilty to his role in the conspiracy on the second day of trial.  Two other co-defendants, Kadeem Gordon and Mario Ricketts, had pled guilty prior to trial.  Two remaining co-defendants have yet to be apprehended. The jury heard testimony from several witnesses that members of the conspiracy obtained the personal information (including names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers) of disabled veterans and Social Security beneficiaries.  The conspirators used this information to fraudulently open bank accounts and prepaid debit cards in the victims’ names.  They also forged documents in the...
Meghan Markle has been accused of pulling rank on Prince Harry during their appearance at a Veterans Day gala in New York. Earlier this month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a rare public appearance at the 2021 Salute to Freedom Gala at the Intrepid Museum in New York. Both sporting red poppies, Harry also wore his military medals and the cross of the Knight Commander of Royal Victorian Order, while Meghan wore a red gown. But keen observers noticed that as the couple were welcomed to the stage, where army veteran Prince Harry was due to present Intrepid Valor medals, the television prompt listed the Duchess of Sussex first before his title. The detail was questioned by viewers who characterised it as odd given that it was a Veterans Day event and Prince Harry was there because of his military background and to award fellow veterans with bravery awards. Viewers were left questioning why Meghan's title, the Duchess of Sussex, was listed before that of her husband former soldier Prince Harry who was there to award bravery medals...
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent Veterans' Day on an army base in New Jersey, enjoying lunch with service members and sharing stories of the mental health challenges of being in the armed forces.  The Duke and Duchess of Sussex - who on Wednesday night dazzled at a gala honoring the military in Manhattan, on the Intrepid aircraft carrier - on Thursday traveled from New York to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The site is the Department of Defense's only tri-service base and is home to over 46,000 members of the armed forces and their families. The duke and duchess hosted a luncheon with service members from all six branches of the military, and were pictured laughing over lunch and listening intently to a discussion.  Harry - who spent a decade in the British army until retiring in 2015, and completed two tours of Afghanistan - discussed the isolation service members often feel when returning home, and stressed the importance of supporting veterans. Graham Bloem, president & co-founder of the organization & Rich Barnes, president, The Barnes Firm, talk about their partnership."We adopt dogs from shelters and rescues after careful evaluation, and we bring them into our program to train them as psychiatric service dogs. The program, on average, is 12 to 18 months of dog training to prepare these dogs and we're able to place them with post-911 combat Veterans in need, at no charge," explains Bloem.Statistics at www.sheltertosoldier.org show that an average of 20 Veterans and one active duty military personnel die of suicide every day. Garland this week issued a memorandum reaffirming the Justice Department’s commitment to guarding the rights of and improving access to justice for veterans, servicemembers and military families. The memorandum directs the Civil Rights Division’s Servicemember and Veterans Initiative to develop a plan to guide its expanded duties and outreach efforts. The Attorney General also directed the Office for Access to Justice to provide recommendations for actions that may be taken to better meet the legal needs of veterans and servicemembers, including through medical-legal partnerships, veterans treatment courts and reentry programs and services. “The Justice Department honors our nation’s veterans and servicemembers not just with words but also with action,” said Attorney General Garland. “To that end, I have directed the Civil Rights Division and the Office for Access to Justice to mobilize resources in order to protect the rights of those who serve and lead efforts across government to ensure access to justice for veterans, servicemembers and military families.” “Many veterans face unique legal challenges...

Joe Biden, whose son was an Iraqi war veteran, will on Thursday use his first Veterans Days address as president to announce a push to better look after troops who suffered ill health after exposure to hazardous materials. Biden himself has long contended that his son Beau's brain tumor was linked to burn pits used by troops to dispose of garbage.  Senior White House officials said the plans would make it easier for veterans to prove that they were exposed to hazardous materials and would include efforts to find links between exposure and potentially deadly diseases. The issue is intensely personal for Biden.   The younger Biden deployed from October 2008 until September 2009 as a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard.  In 2013, he was diagnosed with a tumor, and he died two years later at age 46.  'He volunteered to join the National Guard at age 32 because he thought he had an obligation to go,' said Biden in 2019.  'And because of exposure to burn pits, in my view, I can't prove it yet, he came back...
Donald Trump sent out on Thursday morning a pre-recorded video honoring those who served in the U.S. armed forces, where he took a swipe at President Joe Biden for putting veterans 'through a lot.' 'We will come back,' Trump vowed in his 39-second Veterans Day message sent just after 7:00 a.m. and posted to Rumble, a Canadian online video platform. 'Our country has gone through a lot,' the former president continued. 'The last period of time has been very, very tough – watching what you had to watch. But our country will be back and we'll be stronger than ever. Happy Veterans Day.' Trump's message to veterans took aim at Biden's actions since taking office – including the bungled withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. servicemembers in a suicide bombing outside the Kabul airport. Many veterans of the 20-year war in the Middle East were enraged that the withdrawal was so mishandled and immediately led to the Taliban takeover and collapse of the Afghan government that U.S. forces helped put in place. Donald Trump took...

(CNN)I'm a Navy veteran, currently serving in the Reserves, and the son of an Army veteran. My father's brother served two tours as a Marine Corps infantryman in Vietnam and a good family friend also completed a deployment to Vietnam with the Navy. Veterans Day carries a special meaning to me but also one that evolved over the years. Jeremy Butler I spent my childhood celebrating this day with my family, learning about my father's time in the service and the sacrifices he and others made for the country, and sharing in the collective, abundant pride that we felt towards those who answered the call to serve. Listening to my father's stories about what his service meant to him, and about other men and women who served our nation, played a huge role in my decision to join the Navy in 1999. While Veterans Day will forever be a cause for celebration and a time to honor the sacrifices of veterans, I view this day a little differently now than I did when I was a child. As an...

Check out our must-buy plant-based cookbooks! Learn more A White Coat Waste campaign has succeeded in getting the VA to end its cruel and useless experiments on primates and cats that were funded by taxpayers’ dollars. More than $11 million in taxpayers’ money was dedicated to crippling and killing 6-month-old kittens, all under the guise of secretive constipation experiments. Other VA experiments that White Coat Waste exposed and shut down are their cruel experiments on vervet monkeys. During these experiments, scientists severed the monkeys’ spines and forced them to perform dexterity tests in exchange for food. These tests also included injecting chemicals into their brains and cutting their skulls open to examine the effects. These horrific experiments were funded by 9 million taxpayer dollars. In both experiments, many animals were killed prematurely, either to be further examined or because of complications with the experiment. All of these animals suffered tremendously, and those who survived will never be the same. WCW was able to put a stop to these experiments through highly detailed investigating and collecting incriminating evidence....
