Kyler Murray could crash the party should he return full strength after an ankle injury that’s kept him out a month, but as of now, the NFC representative in the Super Bowl could be determined by a rematch between Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Brady survived three interceptions a year ago in Green Bay as the Buccaneers beat the Packers 31-26, winning the right to face (and beat) the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl LV. Rodgers was 33 of 48 for 346 yards but couldn’t overcome a 28-10 deficit early in the third quarter, getting Green Bay as close as 28-23. In terms of conference seedings, here are the quarterbacks aligned with postseason berths heading into Week 13. NFC: Murray (Arizona), Rodgers (Green Bay), Brady (Tampa Bay), Dak Prescott (Dallas), Matthew Stafford (LA Rams), Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers), Taylor Heineke (Washington). AFC: Lamar Jackson (Baltimore), Mac Jones (New England), Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee), Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City), Josh Allen (Buffalo), Justin Herbert (LA Chargers). Here’s how I rank them individually, as well as those outside the...
During the month of November the Miami Dolphins turned a dreadful start to the season into something that should be admired. Miami’s four straight wins, which became a reality with Sunday’s 33-10 domination of the Carolina Panthers, helped Brian Flores’ team rebound from the seven straight losses that preceded it. So what’s next for the young and seemingly blossoming franchise? Can the Dolphins (5-7) continue to build on the team’s recent success, and can it get Miami back into the playoff conversation? Here is the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s report card, evaluating how the Dolphins performed against the Panthers: Passing Game: B Tua Tagovailoa delivered his fourth 100-plus passer rating (108.3) of the season (8 games played), completing 27-of-31 passes for 230 yards with one touchdown. His knack for getting the ball out his hands quickly neutralized Carolina’s aggressive pass rush, which still managed to produce two first-quarter sacks. Jaylen Waddle had his first 100-yard receiving game, pulling down nine of the 10 passes thrown his way, turning them into 137 yards and one touchdown. Running...
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Cameron Rising threw three touchdown passes, Tavion Thomas ran for 142 yards and a score, and No. 16 Utah beat Colorado 28-13 on Friday. The Utes (9-3, 8-1 Pac-12), who won their fifth straight game, rushed for 265 yards and held Colorado (4-8, 3-6 Pac-12) to 148 yards of total offense with the Pac-12 Championship game looming. Rising scrambled and found Britain Covey on an improvised forward pitch for a 13-yard touchdown with 6:45 left in the third quarter to cap the scoring. Thomas proved tough to tackle on any play, but especially when he powered through the first level and into the secondary to extend his school-record to 18 rushing touchdowns. Rising was 14-of-23 for 179 yards passing. T.J. Pledger added 103 yards on the ground. Colorado’s Brendon Lewis was harassed all game and finished with 84 yards passing, going 9-for-23, with four sacks. The week after the Utes clinched the Pac-12 South against Oregon and ended the Ducks’ playoff hopes, Utah looked less than focused at the start against CU. Not long after...
FOXBORO (CBS) — We’ve wanted a convincing home win from the Patriots all season. We finally got a convincing home win from the Patriots in Week 10. The Browns actually led 7-0 at one point, but then New England dominated the rest of their Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, drubbing the Browns to the tune of 45-7. The Pats have now won four straight to improve to 6-4 on the season, picking up their second home win in the process. Are these Patriots for real? Because right now they look pretty real. Both the Patriots and the Browns came into Sunday’s game at 5-4, but New England absolutely outclassed Cleveland in every facet of the game. The Patriots ran the ball with authority despite not having top running back Damien Harris. Mac Jones completed just about every pass that he put in the air. The New England defense was terrifying for much of the game and, outside of Cleveland’s first drive, the unit was nearly perfect. The Patriots look very real over these last four weeks, and at the moment,...
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Chance Nolan passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score, leading Oregon State to a 35-14 win over Stanford on Saturday. The No. 10 Irish slogged to a convincing win against the Midshipmen, 34-6, the game never in doubt or particularly riveting. The rare moment that genuinely elicited excitement from the crowd, not to mention essentially decided the game, came as the result of a Navy safety woefully mistiming his read on a pass to Kevin Austin, springing the Notre Dame senior receiver for a 70-yard touchdown and a 17-3 lead just before halftime. The commissioner of the American Athletic Conference promised to "conduct a thorough review" after a wild brawl broke out between Tulsa and Mississippi State players Thursday shortly after the Armed Forces Bowl ended. It's unclear what sparked the melee, but CBSSports.com reports both teams were jawing at each other before kickoff and there were some chippy moments during the game.  A massive brawl broke out at the end of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl between Tulsa and Mississippi State. pic.twitter.com/zfaq912SWU— ESPN (@espn) December 31, 2020 True freshman Will Rogers scored his first rushing touchdown of the season and had a 13-yard TD pass to lead Mississippi State past Tulsa 28-26 in a game that was tense from the start. Getty Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs celebrate a touchdown against the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. During the first four seasons of his NFL career, Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde got to witness pure greatness in the form of Aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson. Rodgers was playing some of the best football of his career as he led the league in touchdown passes in 2016 and threw for 4,428 yards. He threw for another 4,381 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2014 while being named a first-team All-Pro. Nelson was one of his favorite targets during that stretch of time as he led the league in touchdown catches in 2016 with 14. As successful as that duo was for the Green Bay Packers, Hyde said that Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs remind him an awful lot of his time in Green Bay. “I’ve been pretty fortunate to be on some pretty good teams with some pretty talented players and I don’t want you guys to think that I’m comparing Josh to Aaron Rodgers, I’m not saying that,”...

The biggest question regarding the Raiders isn’t whether they’ll make the playoffs. It’s whether they’ll win another game. The Indianapolis Colts all but took care of the postseason question Sunday, an unstoppable force against a movable object in a 44-27 over the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders are technically in the race, but after after the way the Colts moved up and down the field and with the offense turning the ball over three times, it was no contest. Indianapolis improved to 9-4, with the Raiders falling to 7-6 with the Los Angeles Chargers (on Thursday night), Miami and Denver still to play. Even in the event of the Raiders righting the ship and winning three straight, a lot of things would have to break right for their first playoff berth since 2016. CHICAGO (AP) — Mitchell Trubisky threw three touchdown passes to outplay Deshaun Watson in their first meeting since they entered the NFL, and the Chicago Bears snapped a six-game losing streak with a 36-7 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday. David Montgomery ran for an 80-yard touchdown on the Bears’ first play from scrimmage, helping the Bears stopped their worst skid since the 2002 team dropped eight in a row to match a franchise record. The Bears (6-7) sacked Watson seven times, including a safety by Khalil Mack, to tie a career high for the Texans quarterback. General manager Ryan Pace’s decision to draft Trubisky with the No. 2 overall pick in 2017 when he could have gone with Watson or Patrick Mahomes drew even more attention than usual during the week. But on Sunday, Trubisky delivered. Trubisky buried the Texans (4-9) in the first half, throwing for three TDs as the Bears grabbed a 30-7 lead. Facing one of the NFL’s worst defenses, he completed 24 of 33 passes for 267 yards. He posted a 126.7 rating in...
A Mid-American Conference game between Western Michigan and the Ball State Cardinals might have reminded fans of "The Play" from the infamous Cal-Stanford game in 1982. The Western Michigan Broncos was down 3 points and attempted last-ditch laterals to get into the end zone. The ball bounced around from player-to-player, and at one point Ball State and Western Michigan players thought the game was over so they came onto the field. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM However, Broncos players on the field ran through the sea of Cardinals players and scored what they thought was a game-winning touchdown. But Western Michigan was flagged for an illegal forward pass in the midst of the chaos and the touchdown didn’t count. Ball State won the game, 30-27. SMITH'S TD RETURN SPARKS NO. 1 TIDE'S 52-3 TOUR OF ARKANSAS Cardinals quarterback Drew Pitt was 22-for-33 with 249 passing yards and three touchdown passes, two of which came in the fourth quarter as Ball State needed 17 consecutive points to win the game. CHICAGO (CBS/AP) — Disappointment was far from strong enough a word for the Bears on Sunday, as they blew a lead and dropped their sixth straight – this time to the Detroit Lions. The Lions had been on their own five game losing streak when the beat the Bears 34-30, in their first game under interim coach Darrell Bevell. The Bears are on their worst skid since they dropped eight in a row in 2002. And the latest loss figures to fuel more speculation about coach Matt Nagy’s future. He lit into his team following a blowout at Green Bay last week, then watched a 10-point lead disappear in the final moments. Nagy did not get into any concerns about his job status as he spoke to reporters after the game. But he said: “It stings. It hurts. This is difficult. It’s not easy. It’s not fun when you’re losing.” The Bears led 30-20 early in the fourth quarter after Mitchell Trubisky threw an 11-yard touchdown to Cole Kmet on a bootleg. Bilal Nichols then intercepted a short pass...

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes and the Green Bay Packers beat the slumping Chicago Bears 41-25 on Sunday night to pad their NFC North lead. Green Bay (8-3) scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions and grabbed a three-game division edge over Chicago (5-6) and Minnesota. Since winning five of their first six games, the Bears have dropped five straight. The Packers capitalized on mistakes by Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who was making his first start since the third week of the season. Trubisky threw three touchdown passes — including two to Allen Robinson — but also committed three turnovers that led to Packers touchdowns. Darnell Savage picked off a pair of Trubisky passes for his first two interceptions of the season. After Za’Darius Smith sacked Trubisky and forced a fumble, Preston Smith picked up the loose ball and ran 14 yards for a touchdown that gave the Packers a 27-3 lead late in the second quarter. Trubisky went 26 of 46 for 242 yards while starting in place of Nick Foles,...
I’m not a rom-com guy, and I’m not a Gwyneth Paltrow guy nowadays (don’t even get me started about Coldplay) but I’ll always be a sucker for her film “Sliding Doors.” It involves tiny occurrences in our lives and how things snowball from there. The film also carries the witty exchange between Paltrow and co-star John Hannah as he tries to cheer her up: “You know what the Monty Python boys say…” “Always look on the bright side of life?” “No — nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.” That’s 2020 for many of us who have looked for the bright side only to see things turned upside-down more than before. While Maryland and Navy finally got back on the field this past weekend and two- and three-week hiatuses, Saturday’s college football slate offered up a late scratch when Virginia’s game with Florida State was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the Seminoles program that wiped out their game with Clemson the week before. The Cavaliers had already traveled to Tallahassee, so at least they got some quality bus and airplane...

Korea agency says Kim Jong Un executed people over COVID-19 damages No. 2 Notre Dame head and shoulders over No. 19 Heels Maybe Notre Dame’s and North Carolina’s defenses thought their top-25 matchup started at 4:30. Perhaps the defensive backs wanted to have one more plate of leftovers before getting to business. They may have just felt like the best way to be appreciated was to show how badly they were needed. © Getty Images Whatever the reason, once the Irish and Tar Heels defenses engaged, a Black Friday shootout became a slog. A 28-point first quarter gave way to only two more touchdowns the rest of the afternoon. Despite losing its best defender, No. 2 Notre Dame (9-0, 8-0 ACC) shut down the best offense it will face this regular season in a 31-17 win at No. 19 North Carolina (6-3, 6-3). Graduate transfer receiver Bennett Skowronek provided the winning score with yet another red-zone touchdown, but this one breaking from the trend set by his...
A recap of the Week Three action, and inaction … Theme of the Week: Separation The divisions broke into two-team races with the results from Saturday: Oregon (3-0) and Washington (2-0) are the clear frontrunners in the North, while USC (3-0) and Colorado (2-0) have control of the South. They have two things in common: No COVID-19 outbreaks, and no starting quarterbacks lost to isolation or quarantine. Theme of the Season: Fragility For the third consecutive week, two of six games were canceled. One was known early (Arizona State-Colorado), but Washington State’s last-minute reversal shows the plug can be yanked at any moment: The Cougars were boarding their busses for the airport when word came down that they couldn’t play. They won’t experience a repeat situation for the Apple Cup, however. The game has already been declared a no contest because of WSU’s depleted roster. Return of the Week: Utah The Utes became the last major college team to take the field after two cancellations and then a week of negative tests  put their outbreak to rest. The rust showed...
While Maryland and Navy are looking for their next games, Virginia Tech is looking for answers and Virginia is looking to harness its midseason momentum. Plus, the first College Football Playoff rankings will be released this week. Of course the usual suspects — Alabama, Notre Dame and Ohio State — are staking claims thanks to their unbeaten starts. But they aren’t the only schools minus blemishes. No. 7 Cincinnati needed a fourth quarter rally to dispose of UCF, No. 8 BYU has cobbled together nine wins against a wide array of teams across the country and No. 15 Coastal Carolina is giving the nickname “Chanticleers” new life. Of all years to expand the playoff to eight schools, 2020 would make sense, because of the scrambled schedules. But it won’t happen, and college football’s caste system keeps the strivers in the equivalent of steerage. Because why should one settle things on the field? Virginia (4-4) has now won three straight, and while nobody will confuse Abilene Christian with Clemson, the 55-15 pasting showed a 60-minute effort with little let-up. It took...
Tyler Shough threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns and No. 11 Oregon held off short-handed UCLA 38-35 on Saturday to remain undefeated. At 3-0, Oregon solidified its spot atop the Pac-12 North. Devon Williams had six catches for 123 yards, including a 19-yarder for a score and a 49-yard reception that helped set up a third-quarter score. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM UCLA (1-2) had several players out because of COVID-19 protocols and contact tracing, including starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Redshirt freshman Chase Griffin started. “I will not have the opportunity to play vs. Oregon today for reasons out of my control. Frustrated I can’t help the team but they will still be great regardless! #GoBruins,” Thompson-Robinson posted to Twitter shortly before the game. Griffin threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions. Demetric Felton rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including an 11-yard scoring run that got the Bruins within three with 3:43 left. Oregon's ensuing drive failed and UCLA got the ball back with 1:24 left. A penalty on the Ducks...
The Raiders parlayed four interceptions and a fumble recovery and a big day by running back Josh Jacobs for a 37-12 win over the Denver Broncos Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders improve to 6-3 going into a rematch against defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City next week in Las Vegas. The Broncos fell to 3-6. Jacobs had touchdown runs of 5 and 11 yards, Daniel Carlson had field goals of 24, 52 and 22 yards, and Devontae Booker had fourth-quarter scoring runs of 7 and 23 yards to account for the Raiders scoring. The Broncos managed field goals of 50 and 33 yards by Brandon McManus before finally getting their first touchdown trailing by 24 points with 6:55 left on a 7-yard touchdown from Drew Lock to DaeSean Hamilton. Jacobs rushed for 112 yards on 21 carries, with Booker adding 81 on 16 attempts as the Raiders ran for 204 yards overall compared to 66 yards rushing for Denver. Safety Jeff Heath had two interceptions of Lock, with defensive end Carl Nassib and Nick...
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Tom Brady threw for 341 yards and was involved in four touchdowns, Ronald Jones had a franchise-record 98-yard touchdown run, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers bounced back from a dreadful defeat with a resounding 46-23 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Coming off the most lopsided loss of his illustrious career — a 38-3 defeat to the Saints — Brady threw touchdown passes to Cameron Brate, Mike Evans and Rob Gronkowski, then ran for another score in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Jones’ run in the third quarter broke open a tight game. He raced up the middle behind left guard, shook off safety Tre Boston and was gone. Jones finished with a career-high 181 yards and became the fourth NFL player with a TD run of 98 yards or longer, joining Tony Dorsett, Derrick Henry and Ahman Green. Chris Godwin had 92 yards receiving for the Buccaneers (7-3), who swept the season series and handed the Panthers (3-7) their fifth straight loss. PACKERS 24, JAGUARS 20 GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) —...
