A customer's groceries are rung up at a store in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021.David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Critical supply chains are choked off. Demand soars. Prices surge and everyone starts freaking out about inflation and wonder how long it will last. Is it 1945? 1916? 1974? The answer, of course, is all of the above, and you can throw 2021 in there as well. Inflation is not something new for the U.S. as the nation has weathered seven such episodes of lasting price surges since World War II including the current run, which is the strongest in 30 years. Getting out of the pandemic shock has been a difficult exercise for the world's largest economy, and inflation has been a painful side effect. But trying to find a historical parallel – and, thus, perhaps a way out – isn't easy. Virtually every cycle bears at least some similarities to others, but each is unique in its own way. The most common comparison to these days is the stagflation – low growth,...
The U.S. and China flags stand behind a microphone at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing on April 9, 2009.Frederic J. Brown | AFP | Getty Images The U.S. and China have just emerged from a high-profile meeting between their two leaders, striking a positive tone about their relationship going forward — but one big question remains unanswered, said an analyst. "The open question for the broader relationship is whether the US and China can constructively manage the slow-motion collision that is now unfolding between their very different worldviews," said Stephen Olson, senior research fellow at Hinrich Foundation, in Tuesday note after the virtual summit. The U.S. and China still face "hard-edged, irreconcilable differences" that are deeply entrenched — and it remains to be seen whether the fallout between them will ease after the meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, said Olson. "Neither country is going to disappear. Neither country will accede to the other's view. The prudent path forward would be to find plausible ways for each side's divergent narratives to coexist," he said.Hard-edged, irreconcilable...
NBC Kelly Clarkson and John Legend pose on the set of "The Voice." Season 21 of NBC’s “The Voice” is heating up, and fans may be interested to know that it will feature a completely different elimination schedule as well as different theme nights for the rest of the season than viewers have seen in previous iterations of the show. She joins long-time coach Blake Shelton as well as Kelly Clarkson and John Legend. One thing that hasn’t changed in the past 20 seasons of the show is the presence of host Carson Daly. There were a few changes to the pre-recorded portions of the show, including the way the coaches were able to choose a comeback artist as well as not having a save in the knockout round, but the live shows will feature even more changes. This morning at 9:00 am, an "Open Letter in Defense of Democracy" was published, simultaneously, by The New Republic and The Bulwark (see here and here). The letter was co-signed by around 40 public intellectuals across the political spectrum, from Noam Chomsky and Adolph Reed to prominent former-neoconservatives Max Boot and Mona Charen. It was drafted by me along with two collaborators: Todd Gitlin and William Kristol. A few years ago I am pretty sure that neither Todd nor I ever imagined collaborating with Bill, just as I am pretty confident Bill never imagined collaborating with either of us. Indeed, a couple of years ago I locked horns with Bill at a New School conference. And yet the threat to liberal democracy has never been greater in our lifetime. Each of us has been sounding the alarm in our own way for some time. And as the situation darkened, some e-mail exchanges became a one-off conversation which became a regular Zoom meeting which eventually became a collaboration and a friendship. The Open Letter is one outcome of this friendly collaboration,...

Key personality differences between cat breeds have been identified by scientists — with Russian Blues the most fearful and Turkish Vans the most aggressive.  Researchers from the University of Helsinki created a new and more comprehensive questionnaire for surveying the personalities and behaviours of our feline friends.  After studying data on more than 4,300 cats from 26 different breeds, the team identified seven key traits, including playfulness, fearfulness and grooming levels. According to the team, studying behaviour and personality traits in cats may help us to address behavioural problems like aggression and inappropriate elimination. I’m pretty sure I never called Donald Trump a fascist, at least not without a lot of hemming and hawing over whether the f-word would be fully accurate or fair as a description of Trump. I wish that people on the right who throw the s-word – socialist – around when referring to liberal Democrats, most of whom don’t call themselves socialists, were similarly cautious. And there were times when I thought about, and wrote about, using the f-word to describe Trump and his most fascist-seeming followers. I held back because I didn’t want to be part of a race to the bottom. (Here’s an example of a piece in which I discussed this dilemma at some length, but still specified that I was not literally calling Trump a fascist, even as Trump and his minions regularly used the s-word to talk about liberals who do not consider themselves socialists.) Article continues after advertisement And I hope that in the post-Trump era, we can return to the pre-Trump norms. To be specific, I hope (without any great expectation) that those...
Despite being the most powerful and richest (or among the richest, depending on how you measure) nation on earth, and despite spending by a HUGE margin the most per capita on health care, U.S. average life expectancy, which checks in at 79.11 years, ranks 46th in the world, according to “Worldometer.” I’m sure someone could quibble with the methodology behind any such rankings, but no amount of such quibbling could eliminate the VERY large disparity between where we rank on health spending and where we rank on health outcomes. This has always struck me as a huge outrage, easily known by anyone who chooses to know it. In the current issue of the New Yorker, Atul Gawande, an American surgeon, health researcher and journalist, takes as his starting point the comparison between U.S. life expectancy and that of Costa Rica, a small Central American nation which, although the most prosperous in its region, has a much, much lower average income than ours, but which checks in with a life expectancy of 80.94 years, almost two years higher than the U.S. figure....

Volkswagen ID.3 and Volkswagen ID.4 are two models with certain similarities to each other, but which also have 5 major differences. Volkswagen is creating a family of electric cars that will continue to grow in the coming years, giving rise to a complete range in which some models will be very even with others. It has already happened with the first two launches of the brand, Volkswagen ID.3 and Volkswagen ID.4, which resemble each other, but also have 5 major differences from each other. Concept Both models want to fulfill as a unique family car, but their approach is quite different. The ID.3 It falls into the category of a conventional compact, although due to its shape, which dominates the interior space, it is impossible to appreciate certain touches of a minivan in its proposal. On the other hand the ID.4, larger in size and SUV format, presents a more muscular, athletic and, we could say, even slightly sporty image. Size We are talking about a car from segment C and another from D. VW ID.3 It has a length...

Just when you thought it was safe to celebrate Independence Day again … Millions of COVID-warriors across America emerged into the blinding sunlight from their mountainside pillbox bunkers this weekend after President Biden granted them permission to celebrate July 4 — but only “socially-distanced” and masked outside with 16-cent hot dogs, of course. Now come the unabashed racists at the Public Broadcasting Service with a television program called “A Capitol Fourth” featuring a former beauty queen singing what the racist media dutifully called “the Black National Anthem.” Say what? These bigots have so indelibly segregated America into racial groups that they now promote various “national anthems” based on the color of one’s skin? Truly nuts. It raises a few interesting questions. What, for example, is the “White national anthem”? Or, the “LGBTQ national anthem”? What is the “American skinhead national anthem?” ”What is the “neo-con national anthem?” The temptation here is to roll your eyes, spit into the campfire and crack open another can of cold beer. But the Biden administration said nothing about allowing you to celebrate the Fourth with a...

(CNN)After more than a year of politicized science and amid a wave of vaccine hesitancy, the long war against Covid-19 stands at a critical stage.Hope for an eradication akin to smallpox -- or even a polio- or measles-style elimination -- is a towering aspiration. Herd immunity, meanwhile, is a moving target that requires a lot of things to go right -- and stay right, experts say. People will need to trust science, put their communities over personal comfort and realize that pathogens have no respect for state or national borders. How previous disease fights have played out -- from measles in the United States to anthrax in Kenya to the global defeat of smallpox -- offers lessons for how humanity might overcome the latest scourge. Some variables -- variants, for instance -- are largely out of people's control, but so many other proven measures are fully within their power."If we had done a better job of social distancing and continued it rigorously through the time that the vaccine became available, I think -- not think, I know -- we would've seen...
(CNN)About 58% of American adults have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine -- but the rates differ depending on where you look.At the top of the list is Vermont, where 74.5% of adults have had at least one vaccine dose. Every state in the Northeast has given at least one dose to over 60% of its adult residents, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the bottom is Mississippi, where 41.5% of adults have received at least one vaccine dose. Similarly, every state on its border has vaccinated less than half of its adult residents. The contrast between states and regions largely fits along partisan political lines: States that voted Democratic in the most recent presidential election have higher vaccination rates than those that voted Republican. In fact, the 19 states with the highest percentage of vaccinated adults all voted for President Joe Biden. Among the 16 states with the lowest vaccination rates, only Georgia went for Biden, according to the CDC.Other demographic differences, including age, race and education, have similarly influenced vaccination...

Pride and sorrow WHEN the minute’s silence to commence the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral begins at 3pm tomorrow, it will be a time for the nation to reflect on a long life well-lived. Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page's shock departure from the hit Netflix show came after a fallout with executive producer Shonda Rhimes over 'creative differences'.  The 31-year-old actor left fans heartbroken when he revealed earlier this month that his character, the Duke of Hastings, would not be returning for the second season of the popular period drama — prompting furious speculation that Page was in the running to take over the role of James Bond.  However, a source has now claimed to Page Six that Page's decision to quit Bridgerton was actually sparked by tension with Rhimes over the fact that his character was not going to be the 'focal point' of the second season.  'Regé is not coming back to Bridgerton because of creative differences with Shonda Rhimes and her team,' a 'Hollywood source' told the publication.  'He wasn’t happy with what was planned for his character for season two, which would have kept him a player but not the focal point of the show.'  Gone: Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page's shock departure from the hit Netflix show came after a fallout...
