Oscar-nominated star Andra Day has claimed the textbooks used in American schools are designed to perpetuate “white supremacy,” alleging they deliberately downplay or hide the accomplishments of black historical figures, including singer Billie Holiday, whom she plays in the Hulu movie The United States vs. Billie Holiday. The pop star, who is a best actress nominee for her role in the movie, also praised Stacey Abrams (D) in a wide-ranging interview with left-wing cultural critic Roxane Gay for The Hollywood Reporter. During the conversation, Andra Day attacked school textbooks, claiming they frequently omit historical accounts of black people, like the controversy surrounding Billie Holiday’s song “Strange Fruit,” which was a protest song against racist lynchings. “We didn’t know because textbooks are designed to continue white supremacy, right? In schools and colleges. I didn’t know about [the women of] Hidden Figures because we weren’t supposed to know,” she said. “Billie Holiday was a threat to a system of racial inequality. LOS ANGELES -- Back in 1972, Diana Ross helped tell the story of Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings The Blues."Now, almost 50 years later, it's Andra Day's turn in "The United States Vs. Billie Holiday." But this is a very different story being told in a very different time in history. With very little acting experience, Day decided to take on the role of music legend and civil rights activist Billie Holiday. Prior to this movie, Holiday would often be referred to as a controversial singer who had a drug problem that killed her. It's true she had a drug problem that came, in part, to numb her childhood. Holiday was raped at 10 and sex trafficked at 14.The controversial part, as far as the government was concerned, involved a song about lynching."It was also Billie Holiday singing 'Strange Fruit,' singing about racial terror in America in defiance of the government," said Day.SEE ALSO: A look at Oscars 2021 nominees for best actressEMBED More News Videos 'I felt nothing but embraced and loved by this community, ' Oscar nominee Andra Day...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The film “Lady Sings the Blues” is the story of jazz singer Billie Holiday–or is it? The movie inspired West Philadelphia native Lee Daniels to go into filmmaking. Now, 50 years later, “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday” finds Daniels, with help of screenwriter Suzan-Lori Parks, going a lot deeper into the background of that 1971 classic. review The United States vs. Billie Holiday Running time: 130 minutes. Not rated. On Hulu. Here it is: Your annual average biopic boosted by a sensational leading performance.  This year’s “The Iron Lady” or “Judy” is “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” director Lee Daniels’ movie about the celebrated singer of “Strange Fruit.” The stunner is Andra Day, a musician who is almost totally new to acting. Could have fooled me. That freshness enriches her Lady Day, who’s been played before by none other than Diana Ross, as well as stage star Audra McDonald. Day brings a special naturalism to the role — her performance lacks the oversized tics and stagey gravitas that’s so common in films about celebrities. She’s not caked in makeup or prosthetics, and her character’s rasp sounds like she was born with it. Day’s Billie is frail, but powerful, and her singing voice melts you. But Day’s performance is a beacon surrounded by mediocrity and mismanagement. The film’s message is plainly clear — that Holiday’s drug and alcohol consumption were seized upon by an...
At the intersection of artistry and addiction, director Lee Daniels found his connection with late blues icon Billie Holiday.  “I had to tell her story because it lived in me on so many different levels,” Daniels told The Post. “Not just as an artist, but as an artist who also struggled with addiction.” Daniels, 61, pulls back the curtain on the troubled 1940s jazz singer’s simultaneous battles with substance abuse and the federal government in his new film, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” out Friday on Hulu. The movie stars Andra Day as Billie Holiday, who has already been nominated for two Golden Globes for the performance. The harrowing tale of Holiday’s traumatic childhood and tumultuous life in the spotlight has been famously recounted in the 1972 classic “Lady Sings the Blues,” starring Diana Ross, and on Broadway in the musical “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill,” led by Audra McDonald in 2014. But in his tribute to the legendary songstress, Daniels chose to focus less on Holiday’s troubled past, and more on her ill-fated relationship...
(CNN)Almost 50 years after "Lady Sings the Blues," "The United States vs. Billie Holiday" revisits the singer's career, through the lens of the feds hounding her. The result is a disjointed, oddly structured movie, which derives its high notes from Andra Day's showstopping performance in the title role.Despite that earlier biography and a recent documentary, "Billie," two other movies come to mind that complement the key elements of this one: "Judas and the Black Messiah," another story about the government's ruthless harassment of African-Americans; and "Judy," Renee Zellweger's starring vehicle about the later life of Judy Garland.Day, an accomplished singer and songwriter, gives Zellweger a run for her award-winning money, spectacularly capturing Holiday's voice and phrasing, as well as the gradual toll that drug abuse took on her.If only the rest of the movie, directed by Lee Daniels ("Precious") from a script by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, were equal to its star.Instead, "Billie Holiday" employs an odd framing device with no clear purpose -- an interview with an impertinent fan (Leslie Jordan) -- bouncing around Holiday's biography, while largely...
(CNN)The pandemic has upended the calendar in a variety of ways, and the movie awards "season" is no exception. That explains why this year, February is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. It's around Christmas, traditionally, when studios and smaller distributors release their award contenders, hoping to be fresh in the minds of critics groups, guilds and most significantly members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the Oscars, when they start voting. For the 2020 awards, however, the eligibility window has expanded beyond the conventional calendar year through February, which accounts for the onslaught of prestige films arriving this month, through a combination of digital and theatrical platforms. Robin Wright stars in and directed 'Land,' which opened this month (Daniel Power / Focus Features).A quick rundown of titles from recent and coming weeks highlights this dynamic, beginning with an onslaught of movies with award aspirations -- some of which have already garnered recognition from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards -- that opened on Feb. 12. The list includes "French Exit," a whimsical...

I’m getting to the point where there’s so much to stream that I don’t know what to watch first, old shows I want to catch up on, or new shows/movies so I can keep up with all the references on Twitter. But! I am filled with hope for the coming weeks, as there are a slew of interesting-looking trailers for movies I have been waiting to see. The United States vs. Billie Holiday I sort of wish this movie had been named “Strange Fruit” after Holiday’s 1939 song that drew the ire of the FBI, but guessing a lot of people don’t know about this part of Holiday’s life. The great jazz singer who struggled with drug addiction saw the government wreck her career using an undercover sting operation, all over a controversial song. Really looking forward to watching this. Directed by Lee Daniels, The United States vs. Billie Holiday stars Andra Day, and premieres February 26th on Hulu. Clarice Do we really need another show about a brilliant but troubled detective/agent who pursues terrible serial killers...
Marlow: Well, the holidays are officially upon us. And while I’m dreading whatever virtual New Year’s celebration I’ll be strong-armed into attending, there will at least be some at-home screening options to tide us over—and with so many options, where do you start? Kevin: Wow, fine, I'll rescind my invite to watch the ball drop over Zoom. Marlow: For you KFal, anything. One film I would not recommend seeing is Wonder Woman 1984, an overstuffed disaster of a sequel that also has the downside of being interminably long (151 minutes). While I think people were particularly unkind toward it owing to it being a live streaming event on HBO Max, where people could tweet running commentary (unlike a theatrical release), it’s a total mess—nothing is explained other than things we already know, the depiction of the Middle East is maddeningly retrograde, they spend two seconds on Themyscira (a highlight of the first film), Kristen Wiig is wildly miscast, and her transformation into Thundercat Cheetah had me chuckling in disbelief. What a missed opportunity. Kevin: I still can’t believe we got...

Kick back and watch your favorite classic Christmas movies — along with some brand-new options.  Here’s a guide to what to watch on Christmas Day. “Wonder Woman 1984,” HBO Max The anticipated sequel to 2017 big-screen hit “Wonder Woman” is landing on HBO Max (and select theaters) on Christmas Day.
