The NAACP website states that the organization's mission is to "ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens." Certainly a noble endeavor, but it has to be asked -- what sacrifice are Derrick Johnson and the NAACP making in all this? I guess he did take the time to craft the two-page letter. That took some effort. But this is nothing more than grandstanding and a cheap attempt to stay relevant by an organization whose influence has been fading for years. It's very easy to request that others reduce their economic opportunities in highly lucrative careers that have relatively short life spans. All of the sacrifice — and almost none of the benefits (if there are any ) — in this instance would be for the players who are learning that being a willing pawn means that others make the moves for you on this chessboard. Real activism should go farther than hashtagging and sitting out games. Now they are being asked not to play for certain teams in major markets. Hey, guys, don't you just...

Organizing an entire home can feel really intimidating. It’s easy to look at all of the spaces, both big and small, that need to be cleaned and put back together, and feel too overwhelmed to do much of anything. To make things feel a bit more manageable, start by stocking up on the right home organization tools. The perfect pieces will help you make the most of your space, give everything a home, and look aesthetically pleasing as well. You should aim to pick out versatile options, like baskets that could easily be used in the kitchen pantry or the bathroom cabinets. Try to keep things pretty uniform and basic as well. You certainly don’t need every product to match, but it’s nice to have a cohesive look, especially in one area. Picking out the right organization tools is just the beginning---once you have them, you have to actually get the work done, which can feel stressful enough that you end up stopping right in the middle. Kate Pawlowski, co-founder of Done & Done Home, recommends warding off that overwhelmed...
(CNN)The Human Rights Campaign has terminated its president Alphonso David following an investigation last month over his actions while assisting former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo who was responding to an allegation of sexual harassment, according to a statement from the HRC.In a response on social media, David said the termination was unjust. "As a Black, gay man who has spent his whole life fighting for civil and human rights, they cannot shut me up. Expect a legal challenge," he wrote. The dispute followed the resignation last month of the three-term governor following an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James. In its aftermath, attention was focused on allies who helped shape Cuomo's response to the allegations, which included alleged instances of retaliation against at least one accuser. James released her report on August 3, concluding that Cuomo "sexually harassed multiple women and violated state law." Cuomo announced his resignation on August 10. He denied the sexual harassment allegations, saying he never touched anyone inappropriately but acknowledged that some of his behavior made others uncomfortable.Read MoreIn her report, James noted...
Share Although there are many heroes in Marvel Studios, there are also organizations that aim to conquer the world. The movie of Shang-chi will introduce us to a new hero played by Simu liu, but also Marvel studios you are fixing the mistakes they made in the past. Since they will show us the real Mandarin what is a man called Wenwu (Tony Leung) and it has nothing to do with what we saw in iron Man 3 (2013). It will also be very important the ten rings, an organization that they have also mentioned before but now explain the truth in great detail. But the ten rings will not only be present in Shang-chi, given that Marvel studios has plans to continue using this evil organization as has already happened with HYDRA. This makes a lot of sense since there are super powerful heroes who need cosmic rivals to make the fight interesting, while there are many others whose skills are not up to par and need more human rivals to show off. Washington (CNN)A swastika was found carved into an elevator at the State Department on Monday, leading Secretary of State Antony Blinken to condemn the hateful carving and describe it as a reminder that anti-Semitism is still alive."As this painfully reminds us, anti-Semitism isn't a relic of the past," Blinken wrote in a memo to all State Department employees that was reviewed by CNN. "It's still a force in the world, including close to home. And it's abhorrent. It has no place in the United States, at the State Department or anywhere else. And we must be relentless in standing up and rejecting it." Axios was first to report the incident.Blinken said that the swastika -- which was the centerpiece of the Nazi flag and is synonymous with anti-Semitism -- has been removed from the elevator and the incident will be investigated by Diplomatic Security, the federal law enforcement branch of the State Department. Blinken spoke to the fact that anti-Semitism is often connected with other forms of hatred and said none of them should be part of the US culture...

But setting aside the strong possibility that Vance may file more charges in the case, a criminal indictment of Trump’s company hits close to the man the brand is built on. The Trump Organization is Trump, and Trump is the Trump Organization. And this indictment could have severe repercussions for the firm and Trump himself. The Trump Organization is something of a one-note brand—nearly every aspect of the company’s identity is tied to the former president. The company’s entire strategy is to appeal to consumers by evoking the ethos of wealth, status, and luxury that Trump has tried to equate with himself. But the company is also, legally speaking, his alter ego. With the...
Former President Donald Trump was spotted outside Trump Tower in Manhattan Tuesday with one of his longest-serving advisors amid a drumbeat of reports that prosecutors are preparing to bring charges against executives of the company he helped build. It was supposed to be the celebration of a grand career as the American Civil Liberties Union presented a prestigious award to longtime lawyer David Goldberger. He had argued one of its most famous cases, defending the free speech rights of Nazis in the 1970s to march in Skokie, Illinois, home to many Holocaust survivors. Goldberger, now 79, adored the ACLU. But at his celebratory luncheon in 2017, he listened to one speaker after another and felt a growing unease. A law professor argued that the free speech rights of the far-right were not worthy of defense by the ACLU and that Black people experienced offensive speech far more viscerally than white allies. In the hallway outside, an ACLU official argued it was perfectly legitimate for his lawyers to decline to defend hate speech. Goldberger, a Jew who defended the free speech of those whose views he found repugnant, felt profoundly discouraged. “I got the sense it was more important for ACLU staff to identify with clients and progressive causes than to stand on principle,” he said in a recent...

More than a hundred women have made public this Wednesday a manifesto in which they call on women from all over the country to join this initiative to raise a new feminist political organization, “thought by and for women”. Under the motto “Feminists to Congress”, The promoters of this initiative that are considered “abandoned to their fate by all the parties” aspire to turn their exhaustion “into a firm and determined proposal” for the creation of “a political organization that puts the Feminist Agenda at the center”. The idea is to form together with all the women who want to participate what will be the basis of the party, combining the skills and knowledge of all of them to achieve a solid proposal, yes, always with the feminist perspective as a starting point. In this sense, the signatories indicate that the main “historical vindications of feminism” are “unequivocally abolitionist”, such as: “gender, femicides, prostitution, pornography, labor and reproductive exploitation, the sale of babies, obstetric violence, religious misogyny, or the biological and social erasure of women. “ Among the...

Harakat Sawa’d Misr (HASM), an Egypt-based active terrorist group formed in 2015, had claimed responsibility for assassinating an Egyptian National Security Agency officer and an attack on an embassy in Cairo, according to the State Department. HASM was also responsible for killing at least 20 people with a car bomb that exploded near a hospital in Cairo, according to the State Department. The group also claimed an attempted assassination of Egypt’s former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa. #US Places HASM Leaders on #Terror List https://t.co/wIpTD10VfH — Asharq Al-Awsat English (@aawsat_eng) January 16, 2021 Some HASM leaders have been tied to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. A Senior HASM official, Al-Samahi, has previously been involved in attack planning, target selection and managing the group’s finances. Designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) makes it more difficult for a group to access resources needed to plan and perform acts of terror, according to the State Department. The designation is meant to “expose and isolate” the group...
When the San Francisco Giants announced they signed left-hander Alex Wood to a one-year, $3 million deal Thursday, it came as little surprise to anyone who’s followed Farhan Zaidi’s tenure closely. The Giants’ president of baseball operations has spent the last two-plus seasons searching for diamonds in the rough, bounce back candidates and players with strong track records looking to reestablish their value at the major league level. Wood, a 2017 All-Star who finished ninth in National League Cy Young voting that season, has an impressive pedigree and emerged as an inexpensive option in free agency due to recent injury issues. Zaidi’s projection that Wood will start every fifth day for the Giants is a modest gamble, but it’s no bigger of a risk than the recent ones the Giants have taken with other left-handers in Drew Pomeranz and Drew Smyly. Signing Wood was a fairly obvious move for the Giants because the team didn’t have another left-hander slated to open the season in the starting rotation, Wood has a relationship with Zaidi dating back to their...

Getty Chris Spielman in a 1991 game with the Lions. Historically, the terms “bright” and Detroit Lions haven’t often combined in the same football sentence, but in one of the weirdest calendar years in history, it might only be fitting if that finally began to play out. Tuesday, the Lions revealed a pre-holiday surprise to their fans by bringing former linebacker and Fox television analyst Chris Spielman back home to work in the front office. Spielman won’t be the general manager though, but he will assist team president Rod Wood on football matters. The addition is a huge one for a team which badly needed a sound football voice to assist them in a huge transition period. By getting Spielman into the mix, score another early point for Detroit owner Sheila Ford Hamp. The Lions’ much maligned ownership group has long marched to their own beat often to their detriment, but in bringing home a Lions legend and a person who is also considered a bright football mind, the new owner may have made the best and biggest...

For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis, the election, and more, subscribe to the Mother Jones Daily newsletter.Cliff Zhonggang Li, who heads an organization called the National Committee of Asian American Republicans, has switched his political allegiances right before the election, endorsing Joe Biden in an October 30 press release. “When the President openly calls Proud Boys, categorized by the FBI as an extremist group, to stand by, it reminds us of the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, when the Dictator called on his supporters to oppress all different political voices as unpatriotic,” Li wrote in the release. This stance, Li, says, has drawn an immediate backlash: A cease and desist letter from the Republican National Committee demanding that Li stop using a logo that resembles its own, and an article in the right-leaning RedState that quotes a former RNC member who says Li is a Chinese agent.  Li said the allegations about his ties to the Chinese government are completely false, a smear retaliating for his backing Biden. “This is the dirty politics in its...
A new survey finds that the National Basketball Association is now seen more like a political organization pushing the Black Lives Matter agenda, with most saying they no longer think of the league as a sport. The survey, conducted by Reality Check Insights and discussed recently in an interview with Outkick, finds that fans think of the NBA as a political organization that sometimes plays basketball. “People are not even thinking about the NBA as a sport anymore,” Ben Leff, CEO of Reality Check Insights told Outkick. “They’re literally evaluating it as an overt political thing.” The survey tends to show that the NBA made a huge mistake by going all-in for the Black Lives Matter political organization instead of merely pushing the generic message that racism is a bad thing. Leff added that the NBA has a serious problem getting fans back to see it as a sport that supports certain political ideals instead of an all-out political organization, not to mention trying to regain its white audience. “That might not even matter at this point,” Leff continued. “One...
