DETROIT (AP) — Cairo Santos made a 28-yard game-ending field goal to give the Chicago Bears a 16-14 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday. Much to coach Mike Zimmer’s consternation, the Minnesota Vikings have made quite the habit of these white-knuckle, high-stress finishes. All that experience must be paying off. They deftly followed the winning formula for beating the Green Bay Packers by making sure Aaron Rodgers was on the sideline at the end and not on the field. Greg Joseph made a 29-yard field goal as time expired to give the host Vikings a 34-31 victory over the Packers in a classic back-and-forth with their division rival and longtime nemesis. “You know how they say, ‘Sunday is fun day’? It’s not at all,” an exhausted Zimmer said after the game was decided on the final snap for a sixth time in 10 games. The Vikings (5-5) have won three and lost three of those. The only team in the NFL this year to hold a lead of seven or more points in every game, all but one of the Vikings’ games have been decided by one score. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Arkansas’ Cam Little kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime after LSU freshman quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was intercepted earlier in the extra period, and the Razorbacks beat the Tigers 16-13 on Saturday night. Nussmeier, who’s been a backup throughout this season, replaced Max Johnson after two fruitless possessions to start the game and completed 18 of 31 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. But the promise he showed in spurts was overshadowed by his two interceptions. Nussmeier’s second and most costly turnover came just two snaps after he appeared to have rescued LSU from a fruitless first overtime possession by completing a 24-yard pass to Malik Neighbors on third and 20. After that, Arkansas, which had struggled offensively for most of the game, needed just a field goal to win and set it up with three QB keepers by KJ Jefferson. Jefferson passed for 142 yards and one touchdown to running back Dominique Johnson, who slipped uncovered behind the LSU defense for a 43-yard touchdown while Jefferson was scrambling after spinning away...

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor fans had already swarmed the field and Oklahoma players had already gone to the locker room. Except the game wasn’t quite over and the 18th-ranked Bears weren’t done scoring, even with no doubt about the outcome Saturday against the fourth-ranked Sooners, whose nation-best 17-game winning streak came to an end in the 27-14 loss. Baylor coach Dave Aranda said he was thinking about potential tiebreakers and the point differential that could come into play for a spot in the Big 12 championship game in three weeks. So he called timeout, and Isaiah Hankins kicked a 32-yard field goal on the final play. That kick came after several minutes to clear the field, some heated discussions between Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley and the officials, and getting 11 of his players back out of the locker room. “At the end of the day, doing it with class is important to me, and at the end of the day, that’s why we decided to bring 11 guys out, even though deep down I damn sure didn’t want...

But they did stop Josh Allen from getting a half of a yard when he needed it most.  The Buffalo Bills gambled on fourth down and less than a yard in the final seconds. Instead of taking a field goal to tie it, the Bills went for the first down inside the 5-yard line. And when Allen took the snap for the quarterback sneak, he didn't seem to get great footing and the Titans defense stopped him cold.  The Titans, carried by Derrick Henry's three-touchdown night, escaped with a thrilling 34-31 win.   If the Titans go on to win the AFC South, or the Bills fail to get the No. 1 seed in the AFC by a game, that fourth-down decision and the failed execution will loom large.  Bills-Titans had a ton of scoring The game was a shootout from the start.  Derrick Henry busted a 76-yard run, recording the...

The Jaguars managed to beat the Dolphins 23-20 thanks to a last-second field goal from Matthew Wright that split the uprights. The path to that final play was not pretty for either team, however. The fourth quarter was filled with questionable decisions that came from both coaching staffs. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Breece Hall rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns and Brock Purdy was an efficient 22-of-25 for 208 yards and a score as Iowa State downed Kansas State 33-20 Saturday night. The Wildcats had won 15 of the last 16 games in Manhattan. The teams split the last four meetings in the series, with each team winning two home games. Prior to that, K-State had won 10 straight games in the series. K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson was 15-of-23 for 206 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Hall has now rushed for a touchdown in 18 straight games, a Big 12 record and the fifth longest streak in FBS since 1996. Hall rushed 75 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game, finding a hole on the right side of the offensive line and racing untouched until the 10-yard line, where he eluded a defender diving for his feet. After Greg Eisworth intercepted Thompson, Andrew Mevis hit a 44-yard field goal to give Iowa State a 10-0 lead. After K-State converted a second-and-23...
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Lucas Johnson threw TD passes to Jesse Matthews in both overtime periods as No. 24 San Diego State finally got going offensively after a rough regulation and beat San Jose State 19-13 Friday night. Neither team scored a touchdown in regulation before Johnson delivered a 14-yard pass on the opening possession of overtime for the Aztecs (6-0, 2-0 Mountain West). Tyler Nevens answered with a 1-yard run for the Spartans (3-4, 1-2). But Trenton Thompson intercepted Nick Nash to start the second overtime. That set the stage for Johnson and Matthews to end it with a 24-yard pass on third down to help San Diego State improve to 6-0 for the second time in 46 years. The game was an offensive slog with the teams combining for 14 punts, four field goals, one fumble, one missed field goal and a turnover on downs without scoring a touchdown in regulation. The game went to overtime when San Jose State let the clock run down and spiked the ball on third down to set up a 52-yard...
BOSTON (CBS) — Nick Folk continues to be among the steadiest and most reliable contributors to the Patriots. He’s now got another accolade to show for it. Folk was named AFC Special Teams Player of the week on Wednesday, for his four-field goal performance in Sunday’s 25-22 win over the Texans in Houston. READ MORE: Julian Edelman Speaks On Jon Gruden: 'It's Just Not Acceptable'For the veteran kicker, it’s the seventh Player of the Week award in his career, and his third with the Patriots. On Sunday, Folk missed a PAT early in the second quarter, but was perfect the rest of the way. He successfully booted a 52-yard field goal before halftime, then hit another 52-yarder midway through the third quarter. His 32-yard field goal late in the third quarter cut Houston’s lead to seven points, and Folk’s PAT tied the game in the fourth quarter. With 15 seconds left, Folk made his 21-yard chip shot to lift the Patriots to victory. READ MORE: Tom Brady Isn't Planning On Missing Thursday Night's Game Due To Thumb InjuryThe 52-yarders were...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mike Zimmer has seen enough game-deciding kicks in eight years as coach of the Minnesota Vikings, with outcomes more often than not favoring the other team, that he usually turns away. “I’m usually saying, if they’re kicking, ‘Miss this, blankety-blank,’ and if we’re kicking it it’s, ‘Make this, blankety-blank,'” Zimmer said with a slight smile. Greg Joseph made a 54-yard field goal as time expired to give the Vikings a 19-17 victory over the Lions on Sunday after new Detroit coach Dan Campbell successfully called for the go-ahead 2-point conversion try with 37 seconds left. “I’m proud of our guys the way they fought. Not particularly proud of the way we played, though,” said Zimmer, who watched the Vikings (2-3) lose a 10-point lead with less than three minutes left. Joseph made four field goals, including a career-best 55-yarder, as the Vikings casually played a field position game until the extra-safe...
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans looked to be on the way to their first win since the opener after building a nice lead with a solid first half Sunday against the New England Patriots. Instead, a second half filled with mistakes, penalties and a bizarre punt for no yards led to a fourth straight loss. Rookie Mac Jones threw a touchdown pass to tie it before Nick Folk’s 21-yard field goal with 15 seconds left lifted the Patriots to the 25-22 win. This loss comes after an embarrassing 40-0 rout at Buffalo that was the most lopsided defeat in franchise history. But this one feels even worse than that debacle because the Texans know this was a winnable game. “Man, this one hurts a lot,” running back David Johnson said. “We let one slide. We let one get away from us. We definitely had the win. We didn’t do enough at the end.” The game was tied at 22 before New England (2-3) used a 15-play, 85-yard drive capped by Folk’s fourth field goal of the...
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Trey Lance’s first half as the 49ers’ starting quarterback didn’t produce any points. It certainly did not lack for compelling drama, however. His first series ended with the first interception of his career. Two other drives ended with him getting stopped on fourth-down runs, including a hellacious collision at the goal line before he could get to the right pylon. That Lance survived the hit was impressive, but the Arizona Cardinals’ Isiah Simmons wasn’t as lucky and headed early to the locker room for evaluation of a concussion. That failure to breach the goal line kept the 49ers scoreless en route to a 10-0 halftime deficit. Lance had almost as many rushing yards (47, on nine carries) as passing yards (63, 5-of-11) through four possessions. His stat line and 25.9 passer rating wasn’t helped by three drops, two from Deebo Samuel and a third-down clank by Mohamed Sanu. Each of the first three drives ended in Cardinals’ territory, with coach Kyle Shanahan repeatedly opting not to debut new kicker Joey Slye...

In just four minutes in the fourth quarter and overtime on Sunday, he missed three. Starting with 2:12 left in the game with the score tied at...

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The Houston Texans are awful. Despite that reality, they were in position to win a football game against the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to poor ball security at the goal line, an ill-advised interception by a rookie QB, and numerous defensive breakdowns by New England, the Texans against all odds led the Patriots 22-9 just 81 seconds into the second half. All Houston had to do there was play decently — or even only a little bit bad — for the final 28 minutes to come out with their second victory of the year and their first victory against an opponent that has actually won a game this season. Alas, the Texans are the Texans. And so, they Texansed. Hard. It began, really, when the Texans’ coaching staff decided that being up 22-9 in the third quarter was a good time to play games with the punt team. On a fourth-and-2 at the Houston 36-yard line, punter Cameron Johnston ran up toward the line of scrimmage in a shotgun position, as if...

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM After Joseph's 49-yard attempt with 3:17 remaining strangely fell short, the Lions (0-5) went the other way for Austin Seibert's third field goal to pull within 16-9. Alexander Mattison, who ably filled in for the injured Dalvin Cook with 153 total yards and a second quarter touchdown catch, had the ball ripped away by Jalen Reeves-Maybin on a third-and-7 run from the Minnesota 21 right after the 2-minute warning with Detroit out of timeouts. Three plays later, D'Andre Swift had the Lions in the end zone with 7-yard run. Instead of settling for the tie, Campbell kept the offense on the...
CINCINNATI (AP) — Mason Crosby hit a 49-yard field goal in overtime after missing three straight attempts, lifting the Green Bay Packers to a wild 25-22 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The typically reliable Crosby missed potential winners with 2:12 and then 3 seconds left in regulation, and missed another attempt in overtime before finally winning it. Heading into the game he was 44 of 46 on field goal attempts since the start of the 2019 season. Crosby, who missed an extra-point earlier in the game and also made three field goals, came in having converted all six field-goal attempts and 11 PATs this year. The Bengals’ Evan McPherson also missed on shots that could have won the game, with 26 seconds left in regulation and again in overtime. The Bengals (3-2) tied the score late in the fourth period. Ja’Marr Chase made a nice catch on third-and-6 from the Packers 36 for 19 yards, and two plays later Joe Mixon bounced right for an 8-yard touchdown run. Burrow hit Tee Higgins in the back of the...

BOSTON (CBS) — That was long. It was difficult. And it was ugly. But when the clock hit zero on Sunday afternoon in Houston, the Patriots had themselves a victory. Despite falling behind 6-0, and 15-6, and 22-9, the Patriots played a nearly perfect final 25 minutes to escape Houston with a 25-22 win. Nick Folk kicked a chip shot from 21 yards out with 17 seconds left in the game to give the Patriots their first lead of the game. Mac Jones completed 23 of his 30 passes for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception. COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Seth Small made a 28-yard field goal as time expired and Texas A&M stunned top-ranked Alabama 41-38 on Saturday night to end the Crimson Tide’s winning streak at 19 games. The Crimson Tide (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) had scored 21 straight points — capped by a TD reception and 2-point conversion grab by Jameson Williams — to take a 38-31 lead with five minutes to go. Texas A&M (4-2, 1-2) tied it at 38 when Zach Calzada connected with Ainias Smith for a 25-yard touchdown strike with three minutes left. Calzada was hit as he threw the strike and had to be helped off the field but returned for the next drive after a visit to the medical tent. Calzada returned after the Aggies forced a punt to orchestrate the winning drive, highlighted by a 17-yard pass to Isaiah Spiller before Small finished it off to send fans streaming onto the field to celebrate. Calzada threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns, as the former backup played like a star to take down...
