(CNN)On October 5, 2013, Adnan Januzaj made his mark in a big way. In what was his first league start for Manchester United, the slight youngster scored two goals in a dramatic comeback against Sunderland -- his second a stunning left-foot volley. It was a special performance that got fans excited and hopeful that the club had unearthed yet another major talent in the game. For the player himself, it kick-started a promising breakthrough season for the then 18-year-old; Januzaj scored four league goals in 27 appearances in a side struggling for identity in the post-Alex Ferguson era. His good form, trickiness and eye for the spectacular were rewarded with a bumper five-year deal but things quickly began to change. Read MoreUnited sacked David Moyes -- someone Januzaj rates highly as both a coach and person -- in 2014 and new manager Louis Van Gaal started using the youngster more sparingly. Loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland did little to boost his reputation at the club, and he eventually was sold to Real Sociedad by then United manager Jose...
RALF RANGNICK'S 1998 TV interview set him on his way to becoming Manchester United manager. Then 40 and managing relegation-favourites SSV Ulm 1846 at the top of the Bundesliga 2, the German was using a back four and zonal marking. And his explanation of how he wanted to play football, including 'extremely pronounced pressing', helped shape coaches' thinking in Germany and now around the world for years to come. Chicago Bears quarterback Andy Dalton will start his second straight game in place of Justin Fields on Sunday as the Bears host the Arizona Cardinals at Soldier Field. As Fields recovers from broken ribs, Dalton will try to push the Bears to a second straight win against a much more difficult opponent than the winless Detroit Lions team he beat last week. As kickoff approaches, here’s our snapshot look at the game. Chicago Bears (4-7) vs. Arizona Cardinals (9-2) Kickoff: Noon Sunday at Soldier Field. TV and radio: FOX-32, WBBM-AM 780, WCFS-FM 105.9, WRTO-AM 1200 (Spanish). The line: Cardinals by 7½. Over/under: 43½. Sign up now to get Brad Biggs’ 10 thoughts first 1. Player in the spotlight The Cardinals declared quarterback Kyler Murray questionable to play Sunday in what would be his first game since Oct. 28 because of a left ankle injury. Coach Kliff Kingsbury called Murray a game-day decision — one that could drastically affect what the Bears are facing. In eight games before his injury, Murray threw...
SANTA CLARA — A year go, Brandon Aiyuk caught 60 passes for 748 yards and five touchdowns while playing in 12 games in his rookie year. Heading into Sunday’s road game against the Seattle Seahawks, Aiyuk has 32 receptions for 432 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. A sophomore slump? Not according to coach Kyle Shanahan. “I don’t think it’s close,”  Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “He’s a much better player right now. He’s better in the run game, better in the pass game. Much more consistent. I think he’s getting better each week going on four or five weeks in a row. Stats can sometimes tell you the answers but by no means do they tell you all of the answers. There’s plenty of time stats will fool you, but we’ve got a lot more confidence in him now than we did last year.” Or for that matter, earlier this year, when Aiyuk was running behind Trent Sherfield and was being chided on a weekly basis by Shanahan to improve his practice consistency. That’s all...
As Tiger Woods continues to recover and work his way back from a horrific car crash, the sports icon admits a full-time return to the PGA Tour will not happen. Woods recently spoke to Golf Digest’s Henni Koyack, giving his first in-depth interview since suffering traumatic leg injuries in the February car crash. “I think something that is realistic is playing the Tour one day – never full time, ever again – but pick and choose, just like Mr. (Ben) Hogan did. Pick and choose a few events a year and you play around that,” Woods told Golf Digest. “You practice around that, and you gear yourself up for that. I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it, and I accept it.” The 45-year-old appears content with that reality, noting that he’s returned from devastating injuries in the past and no longer feels that same desire to prove he’s still one of the sport’s elite players. “I don’t have to compete...
10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears went on an 18-play drive that lasted the final 8 minutes, 30 seconds of Thursday’s game at Ford Field to set up Cairo Santos’ walk-off 28-yard field goal to defeat the Detroit Lions 16-14 and end a five-game losing streak. 1. Matt Nagy got a reprieve as the Bears encountered a team that consistently does more head-scratching and unpredictably dumb football stuff than they do. The Bears were able to take advantage — even if it required every second of all 60 minutes — and extend the misery of the Lions, who fell to 0-10-1 and have not won since a Dec. 6, 2020, trip to Soldier Field last season. The Lions are 0-14-1 since that afternoon, which was their first game after firing general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia on Thanksgiving weekend. The Lions opted to reboot their franchise over the holiday a year ago, and while it looked earlier this week like there was a possibility the Bears would begin a similar process, now it appears that plan...
The Chicago Bears will try to move past a strange couple of days and focus on topping the Detroit Lions on Thursday at Ford Field. We’ve got updates all day for the Week 12 game. Injury updates Bears inside linebacker Roquan Smith left the game on the Lions’ first drive of the second quarter, briefly went in the injury tent and then remained on the sideline with his helmet off. The Bears announced he was out with a hamstring injury. Outside linebacker Sam Kamara has been ruled out with a concussion. Lions running back D’Andre Swift also went down in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and is out for the rest of the game. Halftime: Bears 13, Lions 7 Andy Dalton threw for 220 yards and a touchdown and Cairo Santos made two field goals to help the Bears to a 13-7 halftime lead against the Lions at Ford Field. Dalton completed 16 of 26 passes and led a two-play, 69-yard touchdown drive. Dalton completed a 52-yard pass to Darnell Mooney and...
Zach Wilson finally exited the recovery chamber and is ecstatic to return after missing four weeks with a sprained PCL. “It’s awesome. I’m excited,” Wilson said. “That rush, that feeling you get just to be back on the field. It’s exciting. I’m happy to be back with the guys.” Wilson isn’t worried about the rust or the mental hurdles that injuries can cause. “I feel 100% confident in my ability to go out there and play football how I need to play football,” Wilson said. Being sidelined will only improve his ability to read and attack defenses, the rookie QB said Wednesday. When the No. 2 pick played, he held the ball the longest among starting quarterbacks at 3.10 seconds on average, according to Next Gen Stats. The main reason why: He was trying to make plays and push the ball down the field. That’s why his intended air yards per attempt was 8.8, sixth highest in the NFL. He rarely took checkdowns, something Josh Johnson, Mike White and Joe Flacco did a better...
Playing on Thanksgiving is nothing new for the Chicago Bears, who have done it 36 times — tied for the third most in the NFL. Known as the Decatur and then Chicago Staleys for its first two Thanksgiving games, the team competed on the November holiday annually for 19 consecutive years from 1920-38. The venue that has hosted the Bears most on Thanksgiving — 11 times — is Wrigley Field. As the Bears travel to Michigan for its 19th Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions, here’s a look back at the team’s record on the holiday from the past century. Memorable Thanksgiving game moments for the Bears Nov. 26, 1925: The Bears and Chicago Cardinals play to a scoreless tie at Wrigley Field before 36,000 people — then the largest crowd in professional football history. It’s also the first professional football game for Red Grange, whose signing from the University of Illinois days earlier is credited with helping legitimize the NFL. The teams face each other on Thanksgiving in 1926 — with the game resulting...
By the time Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy and his players spoke to the media Monday at Halas Hall, they had only about 72 hours to prepare for Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions. The quick turnaround demanded they move on quickly from Sunday’s brutal 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Here are three things we heard from Nagy and players as they regrouped. 1. The Bears are evaluating Justin Fields’ pain and movement as they decide whether he can play Thursday. Nagy didn’t provide an update on the injured ribs Fields suffered in the third quarter Sunday, though multiple reports — including an Instagram video of Fields — said initial tests showed his ribs are bruised but not broken. Nagy said Fields needs to undergo more tests. Fields also reportedly had his spleen checked out, but Nagy said the injury is only to Fields’ ribs. As they consider which quarterback will start in Detroit, Nagy said the Bears will have to evaluate Fields’ pain level and weigh that against the desire to further Fields’ growth...
10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears found a new way to give another game away in the final minute — this time to a former undrafted quarterback making his first NFL start. Tyler Huntley was able to leave Soldier Field as the hero after the Baltimore Ravens claimed a 16-13 victory Sunday afternoon. 1. Flash back to the middle of October 2019: The Bears were in a rut and had just lost at home to the New Orleans Saints. The final score was 36-25, but the game wasn’t nearly that close as the offense scored two touchdowns in garbage time to turn a rout-in-the-making into an 11-point loss. Mitch Trubisky was forced to attempt 54 passes that afternoon, and when all was said and done, Matt Nagy was forced to answer for why the team handed the ball off only five times and the offense had a total of seven rushing attempts when adding in quarterback runs. The seven attempts set a franchise record for fewest carries in a game. I reference this head-scratcher because this was...

During the first year of our marriage, I left Peter O’Toole.  God knows, I had cause: when he drank, he’d sometimes disappear for days at a time.  At home, he’d criticise me constantly, usually for not having been a virgin bride. With my confidence in shreds, I’d finally fled to friends with our baby daughter, Kate.  Several weeks later, O’Toole turned up one day to drive me to the theatre where I was rehearsing. It was odd to be sitting so close to him again.  Reluctantly, I acknowledged to myself that I loved him as passionately as ever. Parting for good was inconceivable. Wary and faintly disbelieving, I posed with him for magazine and newspaper features.  He’d just been offered the lead role in David Lean’s film, Lawrence Of Arabia, and was soon to depart for the Middle East to live with the Bedouin, learn some Arabic and get fit.  His alcohol consumption reduced drastically; it would...
Baker Mayfield’s wife Emily may have just called out the Cleveland Browns over Instagram. Though the Cleveland Browns got a win on Sunday, starting quarterback Baker Mayfield is under fire just a bit for his bad play of late. It is well-documented that Mayfield is really beat up this season. He is not close to 100 percent, but it has impacted is play in recent weeks. Given that Cleveland had Super Bowl aspirations to start the year, much of the team’s disappointing play falls on their quarterback. The Browns are still alive for a playoff berth, but this team is not poised for a deep postseason run in the slightest. CRISTIANO RONALDO was consoled by his Serbian replica Nemanja Radonjic after the underdog's shock victory over Portugal on Sunday. Ronaldo, 36, held back tears following Serbia's last-gasp 2-1 win in the World Cup qualifier which saw Portugal crash into the play-offs. 1Cristiano was comforted by his Serbian duplicate after Portugal's shock loss to the European minnows in the World Cup qualifier But as the Manchester United star sat in a heap, Serbian winger Radonjic, dubbed 'SR7' for his similarities on the pitch to Ronaldo, ran over to give him a helping hand. The heart-warming moment was captured on camera and posted to Radonjic's Instagram account with the caption: "Hand to the greatest, " accompanied by the goat emoji. Radonjic, 25, earned the 'SR7' moniker while playing for Marseille last season where he scored five goals and provided one assist. Speaking on his comparison to the five-time Ballon d'Or, Radonjic previously said: "I saw that my team-mates compared me to Ronaldo on Instagram. The 49ers surprised the Rams and the NFL with a 31-10 thumping of Los Angeles on Monday Night Football. Jimmie Ward made two early interceptions — including a pick-six — to put the 49ers ahead early. From there, Deebo Samuel did it all, scoring on a run and a catch as the Niners took advantage of a bad night from Matthew Stafford and moved within a half-game of a playoff spot. Here’s what they said after the win: Kyle Shanahan On the goal of 40 runs: I said 40 today ’cause 40 tells the whole team and the defense has to play that way. The whole team has to play that way and the special teams have to play that way, and you have to do good on third down. You got to get turnovers. You can’t turn it back so you steal some possessions that allow you to do it.” On win streak over rams: “Each game is different. They’ve all played out similarly though. We had a good week. There is no place like road for the 2021 Philadelphia Eagles. The Philadelphia Eagles may have a rabid fanbase to cheer them on at the Linc, but the 2021 team is so much better playing away from the City of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia improved to 4-6 on the year after crushing the Denver Broncos 30-13 at Mile High. Interestingly, all four of the Eagles’ wins this season have come on the road. They are 4-2 away from home this year with wins over the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers, the Detroit Lions and now the Broncos. Though none are exactly world beaters, Philadelphia can win on the road. The Eagles only have three more road games the rest of the season. Since 7-10 is not going to yield a top-seven record in the NFC, the Eagles have no choice but to petition to the NFL to play their remaining seven games on the road this season. Keim’s comments sounded similar to the comments that Cowboys officials made last week before ultimately deciding not to play quarterback Dak Prescott. “I know Kyler can play, he extremely tough, and I don’t think there are any questions in our organization internally about his mental makeup or his willingness to play through anything,” Keim said, via the Cardinals’ website. “We have to be smart whether he is going to play or not and think about the...

Syracuse has been living on the edge for most of the season and, in retrospect, that’s been good for the team’s psyche. “We know that we’re able to play with and compete against everybody,” senior defensive lineman Cody Roscoe said. “Every game is going to be a dogfight. Ozzie Albies had what appeared to be an easy out and potential double play but he dropped the ball and everyone was ruled safe. Did the Braves get screwed? Game 2 was not going well for the Atlanta Braves in almost every capacity. The Astros jumped on them early and they couldn’t get much of anything going thereafter. Looking to try and keep the bleeding at bay in the bottom of the sixth, there was a groundball to Dansby Swanson that appeared like it could result in a double play if they made the turn quickly with Ozzie Albies covering second base. I think the fact this game so often has the winner winning the SEC East now, it’s such a critical game for anybody’s aspirations for SEC Championships and beyond.” “And I think there has been so much history. I remember when I was there. I didn’t know much about Florida-Georgia history, but I knew every time we played Georgia,...
The Jets suffered an embarrassing loss to the Patriots, 54-13, coming off of a bye week. Now the Jets are 1-5 as nothing went right for Gang Green. It was the worst possible outcome for the Jets. The defense failed to show up. The offense struggled again and their rookie quarterback, Zach Wilson got hurt. Robert Saleh’s defense gave up a season-high in points and yards with 551. Inexcusable for a team coming off of a bye against a bottom third offense, statistically. That falls on Saleh. “From a defensive standpoint obviously we all think we’re a lot better than that,” Saleh said. “Again, I want to tell you unforced errors, but obviously there’s got to be a better way we got to coach it. There’s messages that have to be a lot better. Clearly something wasn’t connecting today starting with coaching.” Here are three takeaways. JETS DEFENSE COULDN’T STOP MAC The game plan was to limit Jones in the play action game by stopping the run, take away the short passing attack and force...
Turn Your Instant Pot Into an Air Fryer and Dehydrator With This Lid Texas Tech fires head coach Matt Wells © Provided by People AppleTV+ Julianna Margulies is defending her decision to portray an LGBTQ character in The Morning Show. During an appearance on CBS Mornings Monday, the three-time Emmy Award winner, 55, discussed her character — who shares an onscreen romance with Reese Witherspoon — and chimed in on the argument that cisgender, heterosexual actors should not play roles on the LGBTQ spectrum. "I can understand that. My response also would be: We're all making assumptions as to who I am and what my past is, and what all of our pasts are," she said. "I understand 100 percent that I can't play a different race, but I am an actress, and I am supposed to embody another character. Whatever their sexuality is doesn't matter to me, the same way watching a gay person play a straight person. The 49ers opened their first drive on Sunday night against the Colts with a short bootleg pass from Jimmy Garoppolo to Deebo Samuel in an apparent effort to prove they wouldn’t cave to the rainy conditions in Santa Clara. But the rest of their script for the opening possession showed that they could succeed by embracing the elements. The Niners ran six times on the eight-play drive, including five rushes by rookie running back Elijah Mitchell for 57 yards and a touchdown. Kicker Joey Slye missed the extra point wide right before making a field goal on the Niners’ second drive. At kickoff, the temperature was 64 degrees but rain was pouring at Levi’s Stadium, as it had for about 24 hours across the Bay Area. The forecast called for 100 percent chance of rain through the evening. Slye made all 14 of his pregame practice attempts, but Colts kicker Michael Badgley missed seven pregame kicks, according to NBC’s broadcast team. That second San Francisco possession came just a single play after Mitchell’s 14-yard touchdown...

However, hearing his signature voice in James Patterson and Duane Swierczynski’s Audible Original drama The Guilty contributes to a highly immersive audio experience. The actor voices the reclusive, wildly successful writer Osmund Box, performing alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Aldis Hodge, Corey Stoll, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Julie White, Stephanie DeRosa, Danny Burstein and Peter Gallagher. “There were so many elements there that appealed to me. James Patterson for one thing — the fact that Audible had invited him to experiment with audio drama, something that I’ve been doing my whole career, off and on,” Lithgow tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The extraordinary theatrical setting of this piece, and this larger-than-life character.” The setting he’s referring to is Broadway. It’s opening night of Box’s new play, but it soon becomes a murder scene, and New York City homicide detectives...

Metcalf‘s catch. There wasn’t much reason to question what happened during the play. Metcalf made a clear catch and clearly fumbled. Then receiver Freddie Swain recovered the ball and ran to the middle of the field for Seattle to get a spike off to give the club an opportunity for a game-tying field goal. But when the officials halted the game to review Metcalf’s catch, it allowed for an easy spike procedure with three seconds on the clock when play resumed. After the game, Tomlin was still clearly peeved at the way things transpired. “I hated it. I just — I hated it,” Tomlin...

Two and a half years ago, The Lehman Trilogy played in New York City’s cavernous Park Avenue Armory—and from where this critic was sitting it was lost, airless, and pretty unintelligible. Somewhere, over on my left, a stage consisting of a fancy glass cube fashioned into a variously partitioned office revolved in jerky fashion, as the story of the evolution of the famous banking family unfolded. Necks were craned, hopes the stage would draw closer were dashed. And this went on for over three and a half hours. Now The Lehman Trilogy has opened on a conventional Broadway stage—praise be, no craned necks—and it feels a very different, much better show. The designer Es Devlin’s glass cube is now directly in front of us, and so are the actors. Now staged on a conventional scale, it’s an intimate, engrossing piece of theater, beautifully acted, designed, and lit. From being an epic oddity it’s become an epic meal, even as it sanitizes some history and bizarrely neglects to tell the rest. Original company members Simon Russell Beale and Adam Godley...
25 drum solos, fills, breaks and intros that everyone should know 11 Social Security Mistakes That Can Cost You a Fortune © Provided by NBC Sports Replay Video SETTINGS OFF HD HQ SD LO Skip Ad The Boston Celtics entered last season with high expectations: A top-four finish in the East and a trip to the Conference Finals was a realistic prediction. Reality was much uglier. Kemba Walker was never quite healthy, missing 29 games and only looking like his vintage self for stretches. The team defense — once a point of pride for Brad Stevens teams — was pedestrian. COVID hit the team hard, with star Jayson Tatum missing time and then needing an inhaler the rest of the season to breathe right during games. The results were a .500 team that ended up in the play-in, made the playoffs but were summarily bounced by the Nets in the first round. All of that has some looking past the 2021-22 Celtics. But are those people sleeping on a team ready for a bounce-back season? Is this version of...
Heres the biggest news you missed this weekend Rain-sodden Sydney ends lockdown after 106 days © Provided by NBC Sports Replay Video SETTINGS OFF HD HQ SD LO Skip Ad The 49ers have finally found the end zone. Deebo Samuel ran for a 13-yard touchdown with just under two minutes left to play in the third quarter of Sunday’s game and the 49ers now trail the Cardinals 10-7. Samuel’s score ended a six-play, 59-yard drive that saw Trey Lance hook up with Brandon Aiyuk for a 26-yard gain. Cardinals edge rusher Chandler Jones was flagged of unnecessary roughness on the play, so it ended up being an even bigger gain for the offense. The Cardinals have punted twice and run six plays in the second half, so they’ll need to find a way to get back on track offensively to ensure they remain undefeated on the season. The poor play of Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has ESPN star Stephen A. Smith sounding really angry We can almost always count on Stephen A. Smith to react when something goes awry with one of his favorite players or teams, especially when a New York-based team has a shameful outing. So when the Yankees’ pulled their starting pitcher Gerrit Cole in the third inning, Smith did not disappoint. The ESPN star fired off a tweet to express his frustration with Cole’s play and benching: Damn! Damn! Damn! This dude @GerritCole45 signs for 9-years, $324-million….and can’t make it out the damn 3rd-inning for the @Yankees. WTH!!!!!!!
