A five-year-old in Minnesota was fatally shot by accident on Thanksgiving Day by a teen recording a video with a group of 'four or five kids' during a family gathering. Brooklyn Park Police Department officers were called to a home at about 10.20p.m. Thursday on the 8000 block of Florida Avenue, Minneapolis, where they attempted to render first aid on the child, who died at the scene.   'This is a very unfortunate accident that requires a very detailed investigation, which is ongoing right now,' Brooklyn Park Police Deputy Chief Mark Bruley said.  Police say a 13-year-old boy was handling a loaded gun and that 'several other juveniles were also present as they were attempting to make a social media video'. 'A preliminary investigation found that at some point about four to five youths had located a rifle at the home, started using the rifle out in the garage to do some type of social media type video,' Bruley told WCCO-TV, a local CBS affiliate.  At some point, the gun went off, hitting the five-year-old.  The teenager, who claims to have...
(AP) — Back in the spring, Pauline Criel and her cousins talked about reuniting for Thanksgiving at her home near Detroit after many painful months of seclusion because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the virus had a different plan. Michigan is now the nation’s hot spot. Hospitals there are teeming with patients, and schools are scaling back in-person learning. A resurgent virus has pushed new infections in the U.S. to 95,000 daily, hospitals in Minnesota, Colorado and Arizona are also under pressure, and health officials are pleading with unvaccinated people not to travel. A new scoop at Rolling Stone adds to what we know about coordination between Jan. 6 "rally" organizers and the Trump White House—and it might be a very big deal. Hunter Walker reports that "March for Trump" planners purchased and used so-called "burner phones" to communicate with those close to Trump just days before Jan. 6; those contacted include Eric Trump, Laura Trump, Katrina Pierson, and, significantly, Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. Organizers Kylie Kremer, Amy Kremer, and an unknown third person received the phones, and they were specifically purchased "to communicate with high-level people," according to an anonymous March for Trump team member: "Any conversation [Kylie] had with the White House or Trump family took place on those phones." The link between the Trump White House and organizers of the Jan. 6 rally that led to a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol in the precise minutes lawmakers were assembled to formally recognize Donald Trump's election loss is one of the most significant points of inquiry for the House select committee investigating the attempted coup. We already know, as fact,...

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Monday sought to clarify remarks he made over the weekend that it was "too soon" for families to consider gathering in person to celebrate Christmas. Appearing on CNN, Fauci claimed the comments he made on CBS's "Face the Nation" were "taken completely out of context," and that he never intended to convey that people couldn't spend Christmas with their families.  "It is just too soon to tell," Fauci told CBS anchor Margaret Brennan on Sunday when she asked if people could gather. "We have to concentrate on continuing to get those numbers down and not try to jump ahead by weeks or months and say what we’re going to do at a particular time." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended people avoid traveling and stay home this holiday season to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, as hospitals across the country are strained. The Minnesota Department of Health is not recommending gathering, but does allow gathering indoors with one other household with a maximum of 10 people. Outdoor gatherings can allow for three households with a maximum of 15 people. Social distancing among households is still required. Robbinsdale resident Erin Brager and her husband are going to see his mom and sister for Christmas, downsizing from their five Christmas celebrations often with dozens of people. “Thanksgiving is really, OK you eat, you can eat wherever, right? White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx traveled to her vacation home to have a meal with her family around the Thanksgiving holiday despite warning Athe public not to participate in similar gatherings. Birx’s trip happened the day after Thanksgiving when she traveled to her Delaware vacation property along with members of her family from two other households. “To me this disqualifies her from any future government health position,” Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Georgetown Center for Global Health Science and Security, told the Baltimore Sun. “It’s a terrible message for someone in public health to be sending to the American people.” The trip was a vast departure from the doctor’s public messaging, where she called gathering “over the Thanksgiving time period” a mistake. "We know people may have made mistakes over the Thanksgiving time period," Birx said during an interview on CBS's Face the Nation in November. "If you're young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to 10 days later. But you need to assume that you're infected and not go near...

Americans are less likely to wear a mask indoors at private gatherings with non-household members than they are in public, a Gallup poll released Monday found. Many political figures, particularly Democrats such as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), have advised Americans to remain vigilant, even when gathering in the privacy of one’s home in the era of the Chinese coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for example, advised Americans to wear masks at Thanksgiving and has since urged Americans to wear masks at holiday gatherings that feature more than one household. While Gallup’s survey, released Monday, showed that a majority of Americans, 56 percent, wear masks while indoors with members of a different household, that is far less than the 89 percent who said they “always” or “usually” wear masks while inside a store or business. Nineteen percent said they “never” wear a mask when they are indoors with friends or family members who are not in their household, 12 percent said they “rarely” do, and 13 percent said they “sometimes” do. The survey was taken November...
The Queen revealed a new slimmed-down version of the royal family this week, which — no surprise — doesn’t include Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It also won’t be weighed down by a roster of minor royals or anyone like Prince Andrew, who has been mired in scandal. Prince William and Kate Middleton admitted today that they were still struggling over their plans for Christmas. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 38, told students in Cardiff that they didn't know who to spend the festive season with. 'It is so difficult, we are still trying to make plans,' William said. 'It's difficult to know what to do for the best.' The couple's comments come days after a royal expert claimed the Queen wants her children and grandchildren to 'enjoy Christmas with their other loved-ones' and 'not feel torn' as she prepares for a 'quiet' festive season at Windsor.  Lily Faulkner, 21, a second year Politics and International Studies student at Cardiff University said after her chat with the Cambridges: 'They were trying like the rest of us to make Christmas plans with their family and still weren't 100 per cent sure of what they were going to do or where they were going to be.' SAN FRACISCO (CBS SF) — The CDC urged people to not travel on Thanksgiving and now that warning has been extended into December as many contemplate what to do for Christmas. Some say they have ruled out holiday travel when at all possible but many feel it’s been hard to keep up with the guidelines that seem to change daily. Doug Mackenzie grew up on Alameda’s Christmas Tree Lane and now he’s carrying on the family tradition with his wife Tia. “Some people are not decorating as much but we want to decorate more we want to bring some happiness,” Tia said. The Mackenzie family has been closely following the local and federal guidelines and haven’t left Alameda County since the pandemic began. “We miss going on vacation, we miss seeing family but what are we supposed to do? Ya, what do we do?” Tia said. Across the street, Maddie and Hannah Kuhns were also getting ready for the crowds expected this year. “It’s a little bit different this year but I’m kind of excited to see people...
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo apologized Tuesday after attending a Thanksgiving meal that broke state COVID-19 rules limiting the number of people and households at private gatherings. In a written statement, Liccardo confirmed he and his wife were at his parents’ home Thanksgiving for an outdoor dinner on their patio where eight people from five different households were in attendance. The mayor said those in attendance had their masks on while they were not eating and said other family members stayed home out of caution. “I understand that the state regulations, issued on November 13th, limit the number of households at a private gathering to three. I apologize for my decision to gather contrary to state rules, by attending this Thanksgiving meal with my family,” the mayor said. Liccardo went on to say, “I understand my obligation as a public official to provide exemplary compliance with the public health orders, and certainly not to ignore them.  I commit to do better.” The mayor’s attendance at the dinner came after he tweeted before the Thanksgiving holiday,...
San Jose, Calif., Mayor Sam Liccardo (D) apologized in a statement Tuesday for Thanksgiving arrangements with his family that were “contrary to the rules" established by the state. In a longer statement, Liccardo said that he, his wife and his sister-in-law attended an outdoor dinner at his parents’ house the afternoon of Thanksgiving. He added that family members took precautions to ensure social distancing. “In summary, eight of us representing five households sat around three distanced tables in our own family groups on the back patio, and we wore masks when not eating,” he wrote. “I have a very large family—I am one of five children---and several of our family members who would have joined us for Thanksgiving in the past—including sisters, nephews, nieces and cousins—stayed home out of caution.” However, the mayor acknowledged that under state regulations for California issued in November, private gatherings were restricted to no more than three households. “I apologize for my decision to gather contrary to state rules by attending this Thanksgiving meal with my family,” he wrote. “I understand my obligation as a...
