In an apparent snub to the British network, its competitor ITV will host the special Christmas service amid the ongoing controversy over the airing of the documentary "The Princes and the Press." While the palace confirmed to Fox News ITV will broadcast the service, a spokesperson didn't provide further comment in regards to the ongoing drama. Children Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and three-year-old Prince Louis, could even attend — making it perfect festive viewing. But the couple decided to shun Auntie after it pressed ahead with a two-part documentary claiming Wills had briefed against brother Harry and his wife Meghan. Wills did not see Monday night’s first part as he was giving out the environmental Tusk Awards at London’s South Bank. Last night a TV source said of the royal snub to the Beeb: “This is a real coup for ITV. It is a brand new format — the royals have never hosted a televised TV...
One reason “A Christmas Carol” has become an enduring holiday classic is that Charles Dickens’ 1843 ghost story about crotchety miser Ebenezer Scrooge being spooked into model citizenship is ultimately a story about the importance of kindness and camaraderie, friends and family. So it seems appropriate that the version BroadwaySF is bringing to the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco brings together a number of familiar local actors along with the more usual assortment of New York actors. Adapted by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” writer Jack Thorne and originally directed and conceived by Matthew Warchus, this “Carol” originated at London’s Old Vic, where it’s currently playing for a fourth season. It went on to become a 2019 Broadway hit, winning five Tony Awards for original score and scenic, costume, lighting and sound design. The San Francisco production stars OBIE Award winner Francois Battiste as Scrooge, while a parallel touring production is visiting Spokane, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Los Angeles. In a typical holiday season you might find a half-dozen local theaters doing “A Christmas Carol,” all using completely...
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Guthrie Theater brought back a holiday tradition this week after keeping its stage dark during the COVID-19 pandemic, but for the opening night audience, the show was delayed just a little bit longer. A video posted on Twitter has gone viral overnight, showing a woman standing and screaming at other people in the audience. The tweet, posted by a user named Jake, has been seen more than 24,000 times as of 10 a.m. Saturday. First play at the Guthrie in over 600 days. Still hasn’t been kicked out. pic.twitter.com/II4d2XJKjs — Jake (@ekajmw) November 13, 2021 In the video, the woman is seen yelling at other people standing near her to “get out of my country.” According to another audience member’s report, the incident happened “right as the lights were dimming to start the show and then we all heard yelling and it went crazy for like 40 minutes after that.” We weren’t exactly sure how it started (maybe staff asking her to wear her mask), but it was right as the lights were dimming to...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minneapolis’ flagship theater has announced its plan for reopening. After canceling the remainder of its 2019-2020 season in March of last year and laying off nearly 80% of its staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Guthrie Theater said it will reopen to the public July 8 and stage seven productions from October 2021 to August 2022. Among the planned plays is “A Christmas Carol,” a show the Guthrie has put on annually for more than four decades, a limited-run production in October and five yet to be announced plays that will run from January to August 2022. “After a year marked by the profound loss of lives and livelihoods due to the pandemic, it brings me great hope to share our reopening plans with the community and know that we will be gathering at the theater again soon,” Artistic Director Joseph Haj said in a statement. Tickets for “A Christmas Carol” will go on sale in September, with previews starting Nov. 8, the theater said. The five-show run starting in January will be part of a...

At a virtual meeting on Tuesday evening, Guthrie leaders looked back at 2019-20, summarized where things stand now and looked ahead to reopening, but without specifying a timeline. Artistic Director Joseph Haj took us back with these words: “On March 11, 2020, the Guthrie announced the most financially ambitious season in our history. Then, two days later, on Friday the 13th of March, with ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘The Bacchae’ on stage, the world premiere of Kate Hamill’s ‘Emma’ in rehearsal, our coproduction of Karen Zacharias’ ‘Destiny of Desire’ playing at Cincinnati Playhouse and preparing to come to us, our creative teams deep in the design process for ‘Cabaret’ and [Lynn Nottage’s] ‘Sweat,’ and Mark Rylance in residence with a workshop of the Guthrie’s commission of ‘Steel,’ the theater closed in response to the COVID-19 crisis.” Eventually, eight productions were canceled, and more than 270 performances. A PPP loan kept people employed for a time. In mid-May, the Guthrie announced that it would cut its staff by 79 percent. Actors, directors, designers and others involved with various Guthrie projects were also...

Conservative think tank patron Sir John Redwood has again revisited a Christmas Brexit tradition with his annual carol, which this year has taken a topical coronavirus twist. The cheeky annual satirisation of global events questions whether Father Christmas is covid compliant, a riff on the loss of freedom and steep rise in bureaucracy Westerners have had to shoulder this year in the wake of the Chinese virus. The UK’s Bow Group hosts the political Christmas carol annually — the tradition is now in its 9th year — with Conservative member of Parliament John Redwood. The storytelling would normally take place at the group’s Christmas dinner, but this year was delivered remotely. Bow Group Chairman Ben Harris-Quinney told Breitbart London: “Sir John always makes his carol relevant to the events of the day, and most of the last decade has dealt with the saga of Brexit. As one of Britain’s most prominent Brexiteers his stories have often been better at predicting the events of the coming year than most modern journalists. “It has gone on to be feature on the BBC...
The coronavirus/omnibus spending bill was dead to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of its burial wasn’t signed by the president…old coronavirus/omnibus spending bill was as dead as a doornail. No. These aren’t the opening lines of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, writing about the death of Ebenezer Scrooge’s late business partner, Jacob Marley. But it’s pretty close. And certainly, what unfolded this Christmas on Capitol Hill surrounding a COVID aid package was just as Dickensian. Lawmakers from both sides thought they had clearance from the president to forge ahead with the COVID/spending plan. The president’s envoy to Capitol Hill, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, clearly thought they had the green light. It was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who weeks ago declared they would link whatever COVID agreement they concocted to a $1.4 trillion plan to fund the entire federal government through next September. Roughly 100 people gathered for a second caroling event organized by actor Kirk Cameron to protest against California’s coronavirus restrictions. "Let your voice be heard at this peaceful protest praising the Prince of Peace," Cameron wrote on social media. Somewhere between 75 and 100 people attended the event, most of whom were not wearing masks, which was held outside The Oaks mall in Southern California. It was the second event to be held by the actor this month. Leadership at the mall, however, slammed the event as "irresponsible.” "The event occurring at The Oaks at this moment is a non-sanctioned event," mall officials said. "We continue to share our community's concerns over these irresponsible, yet constitutionally protected, events and have law enforcement on property. We reached out to the organizer to ask that the event be moved," they said. Earlier this month, hundreds of people were seen singing Christmas carols as part of Cameron's “peaceful protest” against the restrictions. “If you’re not in the Christmas spirit yet, join us. ... It was supposed to be a very Merry Middleton Christmas in a bubble of ten. As the brains behind Party Pieces, it’s little surprise that Carole Middleton likes to play hostess every Christmas, decorating her Berkshire manor house with baubles and ribbons, baking mince pies and keeping the mulled wine flowing. But last night, as for so many families across the country, Christmas had to be cancelled. The original plan had been for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with children George, Charlotte and Louis, to travel to the Middletons’ Grade II listed home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, for the festivities. MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Like many of our family traditions this year, those at the Guthrie Theater have had to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But instead of cancelling their rendition of “A Christmas Carol” this year, the downtown Minneapolis theater will virtually retell the classic play that it has staged annually for the last 45 years. “We just thought: We’re not going to skip a year, we just can’t,” said Joseph Haj, the theater’s artistic director. “We had to find a way to do something.” Haj didn’t just want to tape an older version of the play. Instead, he opted to make a film of Charles Dickens’ Christmas ghost story. For the first time since March, when the outbreak began, actors were again in the theater, which was turned into a soundstage. The actors were brought in one at a time to work with a film crew, which was dressed in full protective gear. The story was divided into four chapters for the film, with each chapter focusing on a single character. The...

Microsoft tweeted a fake commercial for a pretend holiday album called Microsoft Holiday Hits, a not-real, four-CD album that claims it features “60 festive favorites.” I want to reiterate that this is not a real album — but the company actually went to the effort to record tidbits of Microsoft-themed versions of classic Christmas carols anyway for the lols. I dearly love puns, dad humor, and terrible jokes, but even I groaned at some of what Microsoft did here. Here are the lyrics to one eye-rolling carol: Joy to the Word / spellcheck is done It fixed all of my stuff Or how about this classic? I look forward to hearing your collective sighs of despair over the Internet: Please Mute Ye Merry Gentlemen / You’re talking far too loud We’re trying to have a meeting / You’re yelling in a crowd But by far the worst offender is “Bingle Bells,” which is somehow actually stuck in my head: Bingle Bells, Bingle Bells / Bing goes all the way Oh what fun it is to surf the World Wide Web...
(CNN)Covid cases spiking. Mass evictions looming. Restaurants shuttering. Families isolating. It's hard to imagine a bleaker backdrop to the Christmas season than this set of cascading crises disrupting so many of our holiday traditions. The sharp economic downturn in the United States, combined with widespread uncertainty for many workers, has tightened budgets, while the pandemic has scuttled the usual array of parties and gatherings that clutter calendars every December. Even the promise of a stretch of days away from work, typically a welcome relief for families scattered by long days apart while at work or school, seems more oppressive than usual for people who have already been huddled together for months, locked in a routine of relentless sameness.Nicole HemmerThis may well be the most crisis-bound Christmas of most people's lives. And yet, if cultural history is any guide, no holiday is more prepared to meet our muddle of frustration and worry. Christmas, a potent blend of secular and religious traditions, has long been a tangle of contradictions and a repository for some of our deepest cultural concerns. That's been the case...

Even dogs can get into the spirit of the season. Over the decades, Christmas carols have all been covered in a variety of styles. Songs like “White Christmas” have been adapted to rock 'n' roll, country, hip hop, classical and even techno. Now, “White Christmas” can add one more style to that list: dog. The worldwide legions of Ebenezer Scrooge fans think they know their idol merely as the perennial anti-hero of their favorite holiday classic, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” He’s that, for sure. But a deeper investigation by this news organization has uncovered raw, revealing data, exposing factoids about Scrooge that will haunt your dreams — or at least make you sound like a giant, jovial nerd at holiday parties.
