RENTON, Wash. (AP) — In the middle of the locker room after their first win since Halloween, Pete Carroll shouted “We ain’t dead yet, boys!” Technically, that’s correct. The Seattle Seahawks aren’t dead in the sense of still having a small percentage chance of reaching the postseason, even though it seems highly unlikely. But what Seattle showed on Sunday in its 30-23 win over San Francisco should be recognized. Having lost six of seven and sitting at 3-8 entering the week, the Seahawks could have easily punted on the season. Instead, Carroll and his veteran leaders such as Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner found the right words to get the Seahawks to buy in, for at least one more week and keep alive those small percentage chances of finding their way back into playoff contention. And they played aggressively and in some ways without caution for the first time since before Wilson was hurt back in early October. It was a victory that was sometimes ugly, sometimes mistake-filled, but wildly entertaining. “It’s the guys that keep...
The Houston Rockets make sports history across four major North American sports after recent six-game win streak.  The 1-16 Houston Rockets were the worst team in the NBA. Now, the 7-16 Rockets are the third-worst team in the Western Conference — and they just made major sports history for their recent spate of wins. INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson and Odell Beckham Jr. caught touchdown passes from Matthew Stafford, and the Los Angeles Rams snapped their three-game losing streak with a 37-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.Stafford passed for 295 yards while Sony Michel rushed for 121 yards and a score for the Rams (8-4), who rebounded from a winless November with a solid all-around effort against a struggling opponent. Kupp had his 100th reception of a remarkable season among his eight catches for 129 yards.Stafford also snapped back into form, playing turnover-free football after giving the ball away six times during the three-game skid that threatened to derail the Rams' playoff plans.Los Angeles still has never lost four straight in coach Sean McVay's half-decade in charge.Rookie Trevor Lawrence passed for 145 yards for the Jaguars (2-10), who have lost four straight.Jacksonville turned the ball over twice and struggled to get anything going offensively against LA's star-studded defense, managing just 197 total yards. Wizards extend losing streak in San Antonio to 22 games originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington   The Washington Wizards lost to the Spurs 116-99 in San Antonio on Monday night. Here are five observations from what went down… The streak continues The Wizards have not won a game in San Antonio since before Deni Avdija was born and after yet another loss, their 22nd straight in a span of 22 years, that streak will live on. Washington led the Spurs by six points at halftime, only to be outdone by 12 points in the third quarter and then 11 points in the fourth. This seemed like it could be the year. The Wizards, now 13-8, have been a much better team so far this season than the Spurs, who improved to 6-13 with Monday’s win. As teams from different conferences, they only play in San Antonio once a season, so the Wizards will have to try again next year. It was another rough shooting night from three for the Wizards. They made just 9-for-31 from long range, good...
ATLANTA (AP) — Even with Georgia undefeated in 2021 and unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the eighth consecutive week, Nick Saban and Alabama still cast a shadow over the Bulldogs’ season. Alabama looms as the imposing barrier between the Bulldogs and their Southeastern Conference championship quest. Georgia has lost six consecutive games against No. 4 Alabama entering Saturday’s SEC championship game in Atlanta. That stretch includes three games played in Atlanta — SEC championship games in 2018 and 2012 and the national championship game following the 2017 season. Georgia coach Kirby Smart insists the losing streak against Alabama has nothing to do with this year’s team. Smart, the former Crimson Tide defensive coordinator, is 0-3 against his former boss, Alabama coach Nick Saban, in his six years at Georgia. “Well, I hadn’t been a part of all those, but obviously, this year is this year, and every year is independent of the previous,” Smart said Sunday. “I don’t think there’s any overlap between the two. I know people want to make it that, make it...

Connor’s 14 goals ties him for fifth in the NHL. Paul Stastny and Andrew Copp also scored for Winnipeg, which salvaged the final game of its three-game road trip. Wheeler had two assists and Connor Hellebuyck had 34 saves. Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm scored for Calgary, which lost in regulation for the first time in eight games. Markstrom had 24 saves. The Jets had a chance to take the lead with the score tied at 2 and under five minutes remaining in the second period. Milan Lucic was assessed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct for a heavy hit along the end boards that temporarily shook up Jets defenseman Dylan DeMelo. As Cairo Santos sent a 28-yard field goal through the uprights while the seconds wound down Thursday afternoon, he saved the Chicago Bears from a bad week turning into an even bigger embarrassment. The Bears didn’t need to give the Detroit Lions their first win of the season on Thanksgiving at Ford Field. Not after Bears rookie Justin Fields injured his ribs and was forced to sit out. Not after a report emerged that Bears ownership told coach Matt Nagy it was going to fire him after the Thanksgiving game. Not after Nagy’s bosses left him to refute the report to the media himself. Santos’ field goal in the final seconds lifted the Bears to a 16-14 victory over the Lions that snapped a five-game losing streak and ended a nightmare of a week. SEATTLE (AP) — The third week of October is when it could have all fallen apart at Washington State. There were easy built-in reasons and explanations if the Cougars had crumbled at that point of the season. Instead, their resolve became their strength. The Cougars were not going to let the situation surrounding former head coach Nick Rolovich be the definition of their season. Because of that resiliency, Washington State finds itself still with a chance at winning the Pac-12 North Division going into Friday’s Apple Cup showdown with Washington. The Cougars are already bowl eligible and will play in a bowl game for the sixth straight season, not counting the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season. But if the Cougars can snap a seven-game losing streak to Washington and Oregon State beats Oregon on Saturday, Washington State (6-5, 5-3 Pac-12) would be the North Division representative in the Pac-12 championship game opposite Utah. Ultimately that scenario becoming reality begins with the Cougars taking care of their own business against the Huskies. But even the possibility is unexpected considering where...

Getty Vikings coach Mike Zimmer took an aggressive approach to the team's offense on Sunday that led to a 27-20 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Sofi Stadium. Entering Sunday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers on a two-game losing skid, Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told his team how fed up he was with losing. “I like to win,” Zimmer said in a Nov. 15 postgame press conference. “The players know that I hate to lose. I talked to them about it this week, how much I hate it.” He channeled those frustrations and told his team on Sunday they would be the aggressors. “I thought (the Chargers) would go for it on fourth down a lot more than they did today. I just told the team we are going to be aggressive,” Zimmer said. “If we get beat because we run a fake punt and we don’t get it, then we just have to suck it up and stop them on defense.” The Vikings did just that, converting twice on fourth down, including a four-yard...

The dubious dishonor of having the longest losing streak in college football belongs to UNLV football, which hasn’t won a game since 2019. MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With the NFL trade deadline now in the rearview mirror perhaps the Dolphins can get the focus on the game a little bit more. We know Tua Tagovailoa is the quarterback for the rest of the season, as long as he is healthy, and the Houston Texans, ironically enough, are a very beatable team coming into Hard Rock Stadium for week 9. TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona’s close calls are mounting. The Wildcats had a strong first half against Washington two weeks ago, a big finish against Southern California last weekend. There’s just one thing missing: a win. While the Wildcats have been playing better in recent weeks, they keep finding ways to get in their own way, stretching a school-record losing streak to 20 straight games. “Not where we want to be at this point in the season, but we are building it,” Arizona coach Jedd Fisch said. “You can see we are putting some good games together.” The Wildcats’ next chance to end the nation’s longest losing streak will be Saturday afternoon, when the Wildcats (0-8, 0-5 Pac-12) host California. The Wildcats rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit, but couldn’t make it all the way back, losing 41-34. “You see what they’re doing offensively, they’re difficult to defend,” Cal coach Justin Wilcox said. “They’ve got speed at receiver and...
Iowa State’s win over Texas last year was one in a line of hard-earned pelts collected during the Cyclones’ dream season and helped pave the way to their first appearance in the Big 12 championship game. Iowa State (5-3, 3-2 Big 12) almost certainly needs to win out and get lots of help from other teams to fulfill preseason predictions of a return to the conference title game. Texas (4-4, 2-3) is on a three-game losing streak under first-year coach Steve Sarkisian and trying to avoid its longest since Mack Brown’s 2010 team dropped four in a row. “When you think about big picture, there’s never been a great triumph without a struggle,” Sarkisian said. “At some point, to triumph and do something special, you have to struggle. And clearly we’re in the midst of the struggle. The only way...

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Domantas Sabonis had 24 points and 13 rebounds, and Myles Turner added 19 points to lead the Indiana Pacers past struggling San Antonio 131-118 Monday night. It was a welcome change for the Pacers, who snapped a four-game losing streak and won for just the second time in eight games under new coach Rick Carlisle. Dejounte Murray finished with 16 points and Derrick White had 13 to lead San Antonio. The Spurs have lost four of their last five with the only win coming Saturday at defending NBA champion Milwaukee. But after the opening minutes in Indianapolis, the Spurs never had a chance. Indiana opened the game by going 8 of 10 from 3-point range and taking a 43-31 lead after one quarter. Then, unlike their previous games, the Pacers continued accelerating. By halftime, the Pacers extended the margin to 78-56 and had five players in double figures. San Antonio couldn’t get closer than 18 until the final minutes in its most lopsided loss this season. The 49ers desperately snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday with a 30-22, comeback win against the Chicago Bears, who needed more than rookie quarterback Justin Fields’ magic on a Halloween Sunday at Soldier Field. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo ran for two touchdowns and Deebo Samuel came away with his fourth 100-yard game this season, totaling six catches for 171 yards. “Huge team win,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We kept talking about whatever it took to win is what we had to do. We didn’t care whether it was 2-0 or ended like that. Was just real proud of the guys.” Staff reporter Can Inman contributed to this report. The 49ers came back to beat the Chicago Bears 33-22 Sunday at Soldier Field, ending a four-game losing streak behind a strong second-half performance. Here’s what Kyle Shanahan, Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers said about the victory. KYLE SHANAHAN I felt the whole offense was in a rhythm, which makes me in a rhythm when I’m calling plays. The guys made a ton of plays out there. And then we were able to make some key ones on third down. I thought it was a little frustrating at the beginning ’cause we felt like we were moving and we kept getting in between that 30 and 40 and couldn’t keep it going and finally we did that more in the second half, which was great. On zero punts: “We were just messing with Mitch because he had a baby yesterday and we flew him out here to punt. At least he held, though.” On Mitchell’s touchdown: “That was really cool. I think you could see on one play kind of what our...

Chuba Hubbard ran for a touchdown shortly after Darnold left the game in the fourth quarter and cornerback Stephon Gilmore picked off Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan on the first play after the two-minute warning to keep the Panthers up nine points. The Falcons rallied for a field goal, but a failed onside kick sealed a 19-13 Panthers win. Gilmore was playing his first game since being acquired in a trade with the Patriots earlier this season. He had a pass interference penalty earlier in the game, but the pick is a better representation of why the Panthers brought him to Carolina. Ryan was 20-of-27 for 146 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions overall. He also took two sacks and gashed his left hand when a Panthers...
STANFORD – Stanford started the month of October full of optimism and promise after a thrilling overtime win over then-No. 3 Oregon. After a series of demoralizing defeats, the Cardinal (3-5, 2-4) ends the month at the bottom of the Pac-12 North and will need to pull off at least one upset just to get to bowl eligibility. Washington scored the go-ahead 20-yard touchdown and added a 2-point conversion with 21 seconds left to win 20-13 at Stanford Stadium on Saturday night. It was the second straight game that Stanford allowed the winning touchdown late, following Washington State’s score with 1:30 remaining in a 34-31 game two weeks ago. “(We) have a locker room full of guys that are not happy right now, and they shouldn’t be,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “This team is better than it’s playing and it’s up to me to find out why we’re not and what we can do to get there because we can play much better than we played tonight. I’m tired of saying that. We’re going to find...

CHICAGO (AP) — William Nylander scored in overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Wednesday. The Leafs snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, and extended the Blackhawks’ record to 0-6-1 since the start of the season. John Tavares and David Kampf also scored for Toronto, and Jack Campbell stopped 25 shots. Chicago got 36 saves from Kevin Lankinen, and goals from Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat. Nylander broke in on a 2-on-0 and snapped a wrist shot past Lankinen in in OT. The Maple Leafs outplayed Chicago as the game went on, but the Blackhawks ended one streak early, taking the lead for the first time this season when Dach beat Campbell with a power-play wrist shot over the glove side 5:44 in. The Blackhawks had been tied or trailed for more than six games at that point, the longest such streak in the NHL since 1979-80. Alex DeBrincat scored at even-strength for a 2-0 Chicago lead at 11:48 of the first, accepting Seth Jones’ long pass following Toronto defenseman...
It took some prompting but Washington State coach Kyle Smith finally acknowledged that being picked to finish eighth in the Pac-12 was a disappointment. After all, the Cougars figure to be improved from the team that surprised doubters by finishing 14-13 last year, the program’s first winning season in nine years. “We’ll find out. That’s why we play the games,” Smith said at Pac-12 media day. “We don’t invest too much in (the polls), but we do feel like we were competitive last year.” “Hopefully, eighth will be a little chip on our shoulder,” Smith added. “We’ve had some success. … We have some things to build on. We just got to be consistent and keep building.” Smith noted the Pac-12 is on an upswing, sending numerous teams deep into the NCAA Tournament last spring. The Cougars are clearly also improving. Last season, they beat five teams that earned berths to the NCAA Tournament, including UCLA, which made the Final Four, Oregon State and Oregon. Smith was joined at media day by newcomer Tyrell Roberts, a transfer from Division II...
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona played its worst game under first-year coach Jedd Fisch a week ago, a 34-0 loss to Colorado that left the Wildcats searching for answers. Their bid to end a school-record 18-game losing streak doesn’t get any easier this week. Not only do the Wildcats have to face Washington on Friday night, they’ll do it after losing two starting quarterbacks to season-ending injuries in consecutive weeks. “I think what happens is when you get injuries or when you start thinking like, how do we get out of the rut, you start saying to yourself, is there something more I should do outside of my job?” Fisch said “And our big message is, do your job and trust the process and recognize that we can all build this thing together.” Few things have come together for Arizona so far this season. The Wildcats (0-6, 0-3 Pac-12) had some good moments against BYU and No. 10 Oregon, but struggled in nearly every phase in the loss to Colorado. Compounding matters, quarterback Gunner Cruz suffered a season-ending...
Getty Michael Brockers during a Lions game against the Ravens in 2021. Detroit Lions defensive lineman Michael Brockers has seen a lot of football in the league as a veteran player, so he knows what has to happen if the team wants to dig out of their current hole. Every single person on the roster has a hand according to Brockers, and if the Lions band together in order to clean things up, they can pull themselves up after a tough 0-6 start to the season, which is good for the worst record in the NFL. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Join Heavy on Lions! According to Brockers, all it takes for a turnaround is more accountability across the roster. Speaking to the media on Monday, October 18 in an interview posted to DetroitLions.com, Brockers highlighted the fact that he believes everybody simply needs to step up and be accountable. “Us being one of the younger teams in the league right now, we just need...

In the end, the Jaguars came out on top. The Jaguars won 23-20 on a last-second field goal, snapping their 20-game losing streak, which had been the second-longest in NFL history. It was not a well-played or well-coached game, but it was the Dolphins who made the big mistakes in the end. Brian Flores made several questionable decisions and wasted two timeouts with two bad challenges late in the game, and Tua Tagovailoa threw one of the ugliest interceptions you’ll ever see. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed 25 of 41 passes for 319 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. Steven Krajewski threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and UConn snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 21-15 win over Yale on Saturday. The battered and bruised Colorado Buffaloes got a break at just the right time. Stumbling since a season-opening rout of Northern Colorado, the Buffaloes got a bye week to heal up and shake off a four-game losing streak. When they look across the field on Saturday, they’ll see a team with some of the same problems, only over a much longer period. “This team is getting better from the start of their season to where they are now, in a lot of ways,” Colorado coach Karl Dorrell said. “They mirror the issues we have dealt with having a lot of new players playing.” Colorado (1-4, 0-2 Pac-12) has yet to beat an FBS team and has lost its last three games by at least 21 points each. Arizona’s losing run goes back much farther. The Wildcats (0-5, 0-2) are on a school-record 17-game losing streak — longest in the nation — that dates to a 35-30 win at Colorado on Oct. 5, 2019. Arizona has played better in recent weeks, keeping No. 9 Oregon and UCLA close until the fourth...
