There are only so many times you can bring up the past. That’s the case for Georgia this week, as they prepare for Alabama and the SEC Championship on Saturday. We can go back to the previous years and try to figure out whether past games will have any bearing on future performances, but make no mistake, these Dawgs are looking to finish what they’ve started. We all remember the 2018 national championship game when Georgia had backed up Alabama to a second and forever, only to see Tua Tagovailoa hit a bomb down the left sideline for a touchdown, and just like that, the Dawgs’ season was finished. BACARY SAGNA has declared money played no part in his move to Manchester City as he stated he didn't feel wanted at Arsenal. It was Arsenal's first trophy in nine years since beating Manchester United in the same competition. Former French right-back Sagna knew going into the clash against the Tigers it would be his last game as he revealed contract talks to extend his stay didn't go well. He opted to link up with the Citizens, where he won the League Cup during his three-year stay. Rumours swirled that his move to City was for financial reasons, with the player...
The week before Thanksgiving, John Harbaugh saw Calais Campbell sitting down for an end-of-day meal in the Ravens’ cafeteria. Harbaugh does not spend a lot of time thinking about Campbell. Why would he? In a world framed by worry and uncertainty, Campbell is the weathered oak tree at the heart of the Ravens defense — tall, strong and true no matter what swirls around him. After 14 years leading an NFL team, Harbaugh knows what a blessing it is to have a great player who grounds the entire operation. On this occasion, he felt compelled to tell Campbell so. “Hey man,” he said to the smiling giant with the raspy voice, “I really appreciate you.” Campbell has played as long as Harbaugh has coached, and he does not take such moments of acknowledgment for granted. When he was a young defender for the Arizona Cardinals, he observed the seriousness of Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson, intent on maximizing every day he had left in the NFL. He spent time after practice with defensive end Bertrand “B-train” Berry,...

In one of the least surprising storylines of the NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are still really bad. And while the team is struggling on the field, their mascot struggled above it. Sunday afternoon, during the Jaguars’ 21-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, team mascot Jaxson de Ville attempted to spark the crowd by bungee jumping over the stadium. The mascot opened the stunt with an impressive backflip off one of the stadium light stands, but instead of swinging over the crowd on his way down to the field, de Ville got stuck, and briefly dangled helplessly. It’s a stunt de Ville has completed successfully in the past, but Sunday afternoon the mascot needed to be safely lowered into the upper deck of the stadium after taking the initial plunge off the light stand. @JaxsonDeVille @Jaguars What an entrance ???????? pic.twitter.com/5FwA0Qiaq8 — Jackson(ville)???? INCOMING Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick was deemed the perfect man for the job because he is the OPPOSITE of sacked boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And a deal was closing in as swiftly as Wednesday night, before the six-month managerial contract was agreed on Thursday along with a further two years as a consultant. 'TIS the season to be jolly... and raucous, if you're a footballer. After missing out on Christmas parties last year because of the coronavirus, you can expect plenty of shenanigans when football clubs allow their players to celebrate the festive period. 10Liverpool's Christmas parties of the past often involved fancy dressCredit: PA:Empics Sport Leeds star Kalvin Phillips was unlucky enough to get injured after a nasty fall in a London nightclub during Leeds' Xmas shindig. But that's tame, considering there's been arrests, fights and even fancy dress mishaps, like one former England legend dressing up as a Ku Klux Clan member. And don't forget one captain organising dwarf-tossing for his team mates. MANCHESTER CITY, 2004 Notorious Joey Barton made front page news for an incident at a Manchester nightclub, when he played for City. Dressed in fancy dress as Jimmy Saville, which would now be a massive no-no, he got into an altercation with youth player Jamie Tandy. But rather than walk away, Barton launched into the offensive and stubbed a cigar out in the eye of the youngster....
According to popular lore, when the American humorist Mark Twain was asked about rumors that he was gravely ill, he replied, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” The quote itself is somewhat exaggerated, but the gist remains the same. Matt Nagy didn’t go quite that far Tuesday afternoon, but he did use the word “inaccurate” to describe a report that the Chicago Bears have informed him they will fire him after Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The fact the Bears let the Patch.com report by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Konkol sit out in the open all morning meant no one felt compelled to rally to Nagy’s defense, whether the report is true or they don’t want to get into the business of commenting on every report that comes along. It was a weird day at Halas Hall, but that’s the way it goes sometimes when a team is mired in a five-game losing streak that includes blown leads in the final minute of the last two games. Special teams coordinator...
The Chicago Bears are in damage control, still reeling amid a five-game losing streak and facing a demanding turnaround for Thursday’s game at Ford Field against the Detroit Lions. On Tuesday morning, a Patch.com report from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Konkol asserted that Matt Nagy had already been informed of his imminent firing, positioned to coach his final game with the team on Thanksgiving before a change is made. The team has yet to address the report. But with the Bears in preparation mode at Halas Hall, players and coaches are speaking to reporters. Here is what we know so far. 10:57 a.m.: Chris Tabor addresses media members Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor was the first to meet with reporters Tuesday morning and did not know about the report of Nagy’s potential exit. “Reports are just reports to me,” Tabor said. “I have a job to do. So I’m going to stick to that job. That’s not coachspeak. And I’m not trying to get fired up about the question. But we’re going to do our job.”...
The Chicago Bears are coming out of their bye week on a four-game losing streak with a 3-6 record. But plenty of football is still to be played with eight games remaining this season. Our team of Bears writers weighs in on four timely topics heading into the Week 11 game Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens at Soldier Field. 1. The most impressive part of Justin Fields’ development to date has been _______________. Brad Biggs: His ability to protect the football. Yes, he has eight interceptions and has lost two fumbles in nine games (seven starts). But not all of the interceptions have been his fault, and with the exception of the five-turnover meltdown last month at Tampa Bay, he has been excellent in this regard. This is one of the first steps for a young quarterback, and Fields is without question ahead of the curve. You knew he would emerge as a dual threat at the position, and he has showcased the ability to escape the pocket to extend plays and attack defenses with his running...

If Elizabeth Holmes testifies in her own criminal trial, videotaped depositions may be a clue of how she'll fare on the stand. Twelve days after she was indicted on fraud charges, Holmes, the CEO and founder of Theranos, sat for a nearly four hour deposition in which she hardly answered any questions. But in the depositions, which were part of a lawsuit and an SEC investigation into the company, Holmes did say she was the ultimate decision-maker at Theranos, a theme her legal defense team is trying to downplay in her criminal trial. The June 27, 2018 videotaped deposition, obtained by CNBC, was in connection with a late stage investor lawsuit against Holmes, her blood-testing firm Theranos and company president Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani. "I'm going to follow my counsel's instruction," Holmes repeatedly told attorney Reed Kathrein, who represented the investors who sued Theranos, in Berkeley, Calif. "She was one of the calmest witnesses I've ever had," Kathrein told CNBC in an interview earlier this week. "Of course, she didn't answer any questions, but I've never seen someone keep the composure,...

The Braves won the 2021 World Series on Tuesday night after beating the Houston Astros in Game 6. BERGAMO, Italy (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo again came to Manchester United’s rescue with two goals — including a stoppage-time effort — to salvage a 2-2 draw at Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday. Ronaldo had scored a late winner against Atalanta at Old Trafford two weeks ago when United overturned a 2-0 halftime deficit to win 3-2. And the Portuguese forward scored at the end of each half to help his team to what could prove to be a precious point in Bergamo. It was Ronaldo’s fifth goal in as many Champions League matches since his return to United. Josip Iličić had given Atalanta the lead in the 12th minute with an effort that David de Gea was unable to keep out and Duván Zapata restored the home team’s lead early in the second half. United remained atop Group F. It is level on points with Villarreal after the Spanish squad beat Young Boys 2-0 in the other group match. Atalanta is two points further back. Atalanta’s injury crisis was showing signs of easing but it was still without...

San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller knew Bob Melvin would be a difficult get to fill their manager vacancy. Still, the A’s manager of 10-plus seasons was at the top of their list. Preller’s first attempt to land an interview with Melvin met resistance. Oakland A’s president of baseball operations Billy Beane wouldn’t hear it. “First thing he told me was, ‘No chance, go to hell,'” Preller said to reporters on Monday. Ordinarily, the Padres’ pursuit ends there. But with a grim financial outlook, this will be no ordinary offseason for the Oakland A’s. Beane changed course, allowed the interview and, within days, Melvin signed a three-year deal to manage the talented, underperforming Padres. “I’m probably as surprised to be here as you all are,” Melvin said to reporters at his introductory press conference in San Diego. Surprise it was, but Melvin’s reasons for choosing San Diego tell us all we need to know about why he had to leave Oakland: The Padres have everything the A’s do not. First, the job itself is...

Indigenous peoples advocacy groups are ramping up accusations of racism over the Braves' name and 'tomahawk chop' chant as the World Series moves to Atlanta this weekend after Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred defended both by citing support from southeastern Native American communities. 'The name ''Braves,'' the tomahawk adorning the team's uniform, and the ''tomahawk chop'' that the team exhorts its fans to perform at home games are meant to depict and caricature not just one tribal community but all Native people, and that is certainly how baseball fans and Native people everywhere interpret them,' National Congress of American Indians President Fawn Sharp said in a statement on Wednesday. 'In our discussions with the Atlanta Braves, we have repeatedly and unequivocally made our position clear -- Native people are not mascots, and degrading rituals like the 'tomahawk chop' that dehumanize and harm us have no place in American society,' Scott added. The Braves are among the last holdouts using Native American branding in professional sports after both the Washington Football Team (nee: Redskins) and the Cleveland Guardians (nee: Indians)...

Tanya Snyder, the co-CEO of the Washington Football Team and the wife of club owner Dan Snyder, is reportedly denying that her franchise leaked the infamous Jon Gruden emails that led to his resignation as Las Vegas Raiders head coach earlier this month.  Tanya made her remarks to other team owners at the league meetings in New York this week, four sources told the Washington Post. A spokesman for Dan Snyder did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation, and NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy declined to comment. McCarthy has continued to deny that the leaked emails came from the NFL. Gruden's racist, homophobic, and misogynistic messages were included among 650,000 emails in the NFL's 10-month probe into hostile workplace and sexual harassment allegations against the Washington Football Team (WFT). As a result of the investigation that ended in July, the club was fined $10 million and Dan agreed to cede day-to-day control of the franchise to Tanya. There were few positives to take away from the Chicago Bears’ 38-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7, and that’s reflected in this week’s Bears mailbag. Will the Bears be sellers at the trade deadline? — @rickcwik16 The 3 p.m. Tuesday trade deadline is quickly approaching, and over the last five years or so we have seen an uptick in deals. But the NFL remains far behind the other major sports in terms of in-season player movement. It would be great if the Bears could add draft capital for 2022. Currently, they are without their first- and fourth-round picks as part of the trade with the New York Giants to draft quarterback Justin Fields. They are also without their seventh-round pick, which they packaged with wide receiver Anthony Miller in a trade with the Houston Texans. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Pac-12 won’t catch anyone by surprise anymore. Not with the way conference teams shined on the national stage yet again. Coaches and players throughout the Pac-12 knew well before last spring’s NCAA Tournament that they had one of the most talented conferences in the country. Then, Stanford edged Arizona by a single point in the NCAA championship game, 54-53. The Pac-12 plans to represent in March again, with No. 3 Stanford leading the way in the program’s title defense and Oregon also in the AP Top 25 at No. 10. Three others are in the poll, too. Stanford captured its first championship since 1992 and third ever last season, a remarkable finish to a season in which the Cardinal spent nearly 10 weeks away from campus given restrictions in Santa Clara County banning sporting events and practices because of COVID-19. “Last year feels a little bit like a blur,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “But we got through a lot, and congratulations to the Pac-12 to have two teams in the championship game and six...

Here’s one of the questions he fielded: “Has Dan Snyder been held accountable adequately in your opinion and is there more to be done there?” Said Goodell, in part: “I do think he’s been held accountable . . . and I think we did an unprecedented fine. Dan Snyder has not been involved with the organization for now almost four months.” Snyder is a multibillionaire, who now owns 100 percent of a franchise that (thanks to the ongoing gambling explosion) will in not much time be worth in the neighborhood of $10 billion. And while the fine itself may be “unprecedented,” Saints coach Sean Payton lost an amount in the general neighborhood of $10 million when he...

There were few positives to take away from the Chicago Bears’ 38-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7, and that’s reflected in this week’s Bears mailbag. Brad Biggs takes a swing at questions about Ryan Pace’s and Matt Nagy’s job security, Justin Fields’ body language — and the rarely seen white-on-white uniform combination. That deal netted them the Texans’ fifth-round pick, so the Bears...

An Alabama teen was fatally shot while in his room playing on his iPad The story of sugar: Black suffering, white windfall Cam Newton remains unsigned as the NFL season trucks ahead through Week 6. Newton has been a free agent since the Patriots surprisingly released him on eve of the 2021 NFL season. Despite his boatload of starting experience — 139 career regular-season starts — and his MVP campaign in 2015, teams haven't shown a legitimate interest in signing him. MORE: Why the Patriots cut Cam Newton, explained That includes the Cowboys, which on the surface, makes sense. After all, Dallas has one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now. Dak Prescott is among the league's MVP candidates and has led the team to a 4-1 record while throwing 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions. However, behind him, the team has little proven experience. In fact, their backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, has attempted just three passes in regular-season action. So, if Prescott were to go down again, the Cowboys may be left scrambling as they look to find...

The NFL has denied leaking Jon Gruden's offensive emails that led to him resigning as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. The 58-year-old quit after emails he sent before being re-hired in 2018 were found to contain racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. The emails were discovered in an NFL workplace misconduct investigation into the Washington Football Team (WFT), while Gruden was working as a pundit for ESPN.  According to two sources close to the investigation, cited by AOL, a large number of people could have accessed the materials that were given to the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times last week. Both sources, however, dispelled one notion that has been suggested: That someone at the NFL Player's Association or executive director DeMaurice Smith had a hand in leaking the emails to reporters. With the league's denial, questions have now turned to who was behind the leak, and whether the violation of a confidential investigative process could lead to future legal ramifications for the NFL.  Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden speaks on his headset during the first half...

The fleet-footed goal machine of his days in the Bundesliga with Leipzig has appeared at times a mirage. Instead, Chelsea fans have seen a striker whose efforts to stay onside have been close to painful, with his confidence in front of goal equally wafer-thin. Despite making 60 appearances for a Blues side that won the Champions League and finished fourth in the Prem, the 25-year-old has scored just 14 goals and the capture of Romelu Lukaku put his future in SW6 under scrutiny. But Tuchel...

After all, they were (and still are) the only unbeaten team in the NFL. But they’re not the best team in the NFL. The best team plays in Buffalo. The best team, after somehow losing to the Steelers in Week One, has become the Bills. They’ve dominated every game since Week One, with a pair of shutouts and an average victory margin of more than 28 points. Yes, at one point last night it looked as if the Chiefs would make a late run. Down 31-20 in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs intercepted a Josh Allen pass. A questionable roughing the passer call on Frank Clark erased the turnover. The Bills then drove the length of the field to...
Maneater hitmaker turns 75, plus more celebs with milestone birthdays in October 2021 Cities where downsizing will save you the most This seems to be a flawed Baltimore Ravens team. But they usually figure it out.  John Harbaugh's consistency is remarkable. The Ravens have a Patriots-lite level of success over the past decade-plus. That consistent excellence hasn't always been on display this season.  The Ravens lost the opener at the Raiders, collapsing at the end. They did get a great win over the Chiefs, but needed a Kansas City fumble in the final minutes. Then they had a miracle win at the Lions, of all teams, on Justin Tucker's record-breaking 66-yard field goal.  Is this a great Ravens team? A good one? We should find out more on Monday night when they face the Indianapolis Colts. The Ravens are 6.5-point favorites at BetMGM, which indicates a level of respect for them. It's not like they've played well enough to be a near-touchdown favorite against most teams.  Baltimore has dealt with injuries, particularly at running back. They're still figuring out...

Researchers have discovered that when two people are listening to the same story -- whether it be the reading of a book or watching a Netflix series -- their hearts beat to the same rhythm. The discovery comes from a September paper in Cell Report called 'Conscious processing of narrative stimuli synchronizes heart rate between individuals.'  It claims that even if you're not in the same room with someone, if you're hearing the same story at the same time as another person, your hearts beat in sync. Lucas Parra, a professor of biomedical engineering at City College of New York and a senior author of the study, said that people's hearts connect through similar stories.   'The fluctuations of our heart rates are not random,' said Parra. 'It's the story that drives the heart. There's an explicit link between people's heart rates and a narrative.'  Researcher Lucas Parra and his team have discovered that when two people are listening to the same story -- whether it be the reading of a book or watching a Netflix series -- their hearts beat...

Lawyers representing the NFL, the Los Angeles Rams and team owner Stan Kroenke filed an appeal to move their January 2022 trial out of St. Louis. The trial stems from a lawsuit regarding the Rams' relocation in 2016. The appeal was filed on Oct. 1. It cites "prejudicial effects of extensive pretrial publicity" as a cause for the venue change. The filing was first reported by Conduct Detrimental, a website that covers sports law. Beneath all of that legalese lies a pivotal fight for the NFL. St. Louis officials are seeking financial damages they claim they suffered when the Rams moved to Los Angeles in 2016. The move left St. Louis with debt on the team's former stadium, which built with public funds. A judge in August already denied a Rams request for change...
