Congress returns to Washington this week after Thanksgiving break with two deadlines looming - they must pass a new spending bill by Friday to avert a government shutdown and pass fresh debt ceiling legislation by December 15.  And while President Joe Biden's $1.75 trillion Build Back Better bill passed the House before the break, now the Senate must pick it up. The most urgent matter is the funding bill, with House leaders expected to introduce a stopgap measure that would fund the government through late January, according to Punchbowl News.  The House of Representatives returns Tuesday and a stop-gap spending bill is expected to be introduced on the floor that day, with a potential vote Wednesday. This it the terrifying moment machine gun shooting erupted on the streets of Chicago in a bloody Thanksgiving weekend of gun violence.  Three people were killed and another 40 were shot over the holiday weekend in the latest surge in violent crime.  Footage posted online shows a man, who does not appear to have a gun, running through the streets of Chicago as machine gun fire erupts nearby.   Hours earlier a man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed in southern Chicago after he was shot several times in the back of his legs. It is not yet know if two incidents were connected.  A 50-year-old man was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery on the city's Far South Side and a 22-year-old was struck in the leg by gunfire in the 5500 block of West Belmont Avenue on Sunday morning.   Meanwhile video showed a vehicle overturned at the intersection of Huron and Wells after the two people inside were shot during a car chase.  So far this year in Chicago, shooting incidents have seen a nine per cent...
DEAR MISS MANNERS: I spent two days cooking a flawless Thanksgiving dinner for immediate family (due to COVID restrictions). It was just us, my partner’s daughter and her family (husband, toddler and mother-in-law). That’s it. The guests were assigned to either bring a pie and/or some wine. That was their only contribution. After the meal was over, my partner’s daughter got up from the table and opened a large backpack, which I had assumed was for the toddler’s things. Nope. It was full of food containers. She asked if I wanted any leftovers, to which I said, “Yes, of course.” She then proceeded to take all the best cuts of the turkey, all the trimmings and side dishes, the stuffing that was in the bird (the best part) and even 90% of the leftover desserts — a pie she brought, a pecan pie I provided and a cake her mother-in-law made. She left us one piece of pecan and two small pieces of pumpkin. Related Articles Miss Manners: I thought my offer was polite. His response startled me....

A five-year-old girl was shot dead on Thanksgiving after her three-year-old cousin celebrating the holiday in her Georgia household hit a gun sitting on a chair, causing it to fire and shoot her in the chest, months after her mother passed away. Khalis Eberhart was raced to Grady Memorial Hospital in South Fulton after her father, Nathaniel, rushed to paramedics with the little girl cradled in his arms after she was shot at their apartment around 7 pm. The gun belonged to the child's Uncle, the father of the child that caused the gun to go off, South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows told 11Alive.  The family told news outlets that the accidental Thanksgiving shooting was 'shocking and traumatic.' During a week of confusion and tumult, reports and rumors, the Chicago Bears needed something to lean on. Anything, really. Burdened by their five-game losing streak and then left to sift through the growing uncertainty regarding coach Matt Nagy’s job security, players and coaches had to push to retain their focus and the concentration of those around them. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton was happy to do his part. On Wednesday night, at Nagy’s behest, Dalton spoke to the team at their hotel as a way of helping to recenter the group. A day later, he threw for 317 yards, drilled a 17-yard second-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Jimmy Graham and led an 18-play, game-winning field-goal drive that allowed the Bears to edge the last-place Detroit Lions 16-14 on the final snap at Ford Field. Dalton’s Thanksgiving eve pep talk? “I just spoke from the heart,” he said. “It’s what it all boils down to. I just felt like there was something in talking about what we needed in this moment.” Added receiver Darnell Mooney on...

TIGHTSQUEEZE, Virginia — As the great philosopher-poet Bret Michaels taught us, every rose has its thorn. Every night has its dawn. Every Cowboy sings his sad, sad song. The highs in life are not possible without the lows. Love is not possible without the sting of pain. And joy is impossible without hardship. So, this year, let’s all give thanks for the presidency of Joe Biden. It has been nearly a half-century since we last saw gas lines and families worried over whether they could afford to heat their homes or put food on the table for Thanksgiving. Every few times in a century, it is important for Americans to have a crash course in economics — lest we forget to appreciate how truly lucky we are to live in America, this land of bounty and endless opportunity. We are sure due for another class in stagflation. Not since the great Georgia peanut economist Jimmy Carter was in the White House have we talked this much about inflation. New polling shows a staggering 77% of Americans agree that inflation is upon us and threatening...

President Joe Biden, like many Americans, got some of his Christmas shopping out of the way on Friday, picking up Pokeman cards for the grandkids and some kids books for Baby Beau. Biden spent more than an hour wandering around the cobblestone sidewalks of downtown Nantucket, popping into stores and stopping to talk with the locals. 'He was really nice. We had a conversation,' said one of the staff of Craftmasters of Nantucket, where Biden bought a leather passport holder to give as a Christmas gift. The store sells leather goods. 'He's a very fine gentleman.' At the Sunken Ship, Biden bought Pokeman cards for his grandkids, paying with $100 bill for the $19.99 pack, according to employees inside. At Nantucket Bookworks, where the Biden family has shopped for over 35 years, the first couple purchased some hard cover children's books for Baby Beau, the son of Hunter Biden who is named after President Biden's late son Beau. Baby Beau is almost two years old.  And Jill Biden bought several of the Christmas oranaments for sale, a tradition for the...
Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. Turkey, stuffing, pie, four-day weekend… What’s not to love? But what makes Thanksgiving especially enjoyable are all the neurotic and narcissistic whiners who use the holiday to pretend they’re not Nazis. Nobody stole your land, you godless crybaby. Nobody slaughtered you or anyone you know, you squealing little gerbil. Why don’t you cry some more, bitch, while I add another dollop of whipped cream onto this fat slice of sweet potato pie. Yes, it’s these whiners who remind me of just how good life is in America. Imagine a country where life is so good that the only thing a bunch of overprivileged, simpering little bitches have to bitch about is shit that happened 150 years ago to people they don’t know and are not related to. That sounds like a pretty great country to me. Imagine a country so great that the only thing these professional, all-about-me moaners can find to moan about (when they’re not manufacturing race hoaxes) is stuff that happened so long ago Joe Biden doesn’t remember it. (CNN)Thanksgiving weekend is theoretically all about family. Yet in terms of entertainment options -- to consume with them or as a means of escaping them -- the prevailing theme is heavily tilted toward nostalgia, with projects rooted in the 1960s, '70s and '90s.Music plays a sizable role in all this, not surprisingly, with director Peter Jackson's multi-part documentary "The Beatles: Get Back" making its debut on Disney+, a few days after a film devoted to another '60s act, the Beach Boys, hit theaters and on demand with the touching "Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road."There are also strong musical undercurrents to the movies "Licorice Pizza," an unorthodox look at Southern California's San Fernando Valley during the 1970s, from directing auteur Paul Thomas Anderson; and "House of Gucci," a salacious true-crime tale about the fight over the fashion empire that spans a period from the late '70s (disco dominate the soundtrack) to the mid-'90s.Finally, the weekend features a pair of made-for-TV movie reboots and revivals, with the CW's "The Waltons' Homecoming" -- based on the 1970s TV show set in the 1930s...

Playing on Thanksgiving is nothing new for the Chicago Bears, who have done it 37 times — the third most in the NFL. Known as the Decatur and then Chicago Staleys for its first two Thanksgiving games, the team competed on the November holiday annually for 19 consecutive years from 1920-38. The venue that has hosted the Bears most on Thanksgiving — 11 times — is Wrigley Field. Here’s a look back at the team’s record on the holiday from the past century. Memorable Thanksgiving game moments for the Bears Nov. 26, 1925: The Bears and Chicago Cardinals play to a scoreless tie at Wrigley Field before 36,000 people — then the largest crowd in professional football history. In what was a penalty-ridden NFL game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, a pass interference called on Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown kept the Raiders drive alive in overtime with the scores knotted up. The penalty allowed Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr to set his team up within manageable field goal range to claim a famous victory, and Carlson duly converted his fifth field goal of the game. On Thursday, just before the afternoon bells rang, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson gave a bus full of unsuspecting tourists in Los Angeles the surprise of their trip when he pulled up alongside their parked vehicle.  And in true The Rock fashion, he showed off his engaging and personable personality by saying hello like he was just any other guy being nice and courteous.

Thousands in Southern California are without power on Thanksgiving for the second year running as the region's largest utility cut off service amid risks of strong winds causing wildfires.  Edison International of Southern California halted power service to 63,835 homes and businesses across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. The shutoff began around 10:36 a.m. local time Thursday, Thanksgiving. Edison is shutting down power to avoid having live wires spark blazes and possible wildfires as a wind storm hit the area.  When all is said and done, more than 200,000 accounts could lose service between the Los Angeles and San Diego areas.    Wildfires sparked by live power lines, like this one pictured from 2019, are the reasons for the shutdowns Edison crews (pictured in a stock image) will have to check the power lines after the winds before power can be restored Voluntarily switching off power lines ahead of strong winds has become somewhat of a new normal in the region after a series of deadly wildfires was sparked by their equipment. Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons was called for roughing the passer, after Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr fell into him. Dallas Cowboys fans had to be dealing with heartburn on Thursday night, and it had nothing to do with Thanksgiving dinner. Rather, it had to do with the calls by officials during their Thanksgiving game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Dallas fans were no doubt furious about one penalty in particular. In the second half, Cowboys rookie linebacker Micah Parsons was called for a roughing the passer penalty. But upon further replay, the flag was thrown after Raiders quarterback Derek Carr…fell right into Parson’s hand and knee. Take a look for yourselves in the video below. “Forcible” contact is obviously subjective but I would put this in the “glancing” category rather than “forcible”. https://t.co/Vq2yzm60NK — Terry McAulay (@SNFRules) November 26, 2021 Micah Parsons called for questionable roughing the passer penalty vs. Raiders That penalty turned out to be costly for Dallas, as it turned an 11-yard reception by Hunter Renfrow into a 26-yard gain with the penalty. Michigan has requested federal military medical assistance to deal with the worst COVID-19 surge in the country, as Minnesota is asking its National Guard to support the struggling medical staff in its hard-hit care homes. Both states are seeing rapidly-rising COVID cases and hospitalizations, as the cold weather forces people indoors. Michigan is the current epicenter of the fourth wave, with cases up 88 per cent in the last two weeks, according to The New York Times's COVID tracking. Hospitalizations in Michigan have risen 48 per cent in the last 14 days, and deaths 64 per cent. Of 3,114 ICU beds in the state, 85 per cent - or 2,651 - are occupied, according to the state health department. A Nantucket man reportedly gave President Joe Biden’s motorcade the middle finger as Biden made a stop on Thanksgiving during his stay at billionaire David Rubinstein’s compound. Biden and first lady Jill greeted the U.S. Coast Guard members before retiring to their vacation home on Rubenstein’s island. Biden gave “challenge coins” to Coast Guard members as a way to commemorate their service. The President said to Coast Guard members: I’m not joking when I say I’m thankful for these guys – I’m thankful for them, and everybody, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I’ve watched them in the South China Sea, I’ve watched them in Afghanistan, Iraq. I’ve watched them in South America … Wherever they are.” However, there was “one gentleman standing on his porch giving the middle finger to the presidential motorcade as we neared the coast guard station,” according to White House pool reporter Zolan Kanno-Youngs. The Nantucket man’s gesture is symbolic of how many Americans feel about the President and represents a rising discontent with Biden. The Atlantic published an essay on the eve of Thanksgiving, calling on readers to utilize family Thanksgiving get-togethers to “deprogram” and sow doubt in conservative relatives, suggesting that one may even succeed in changing their mind or perhaps “need to report [them] to the FBI!” In an essay penned by Daily Beast contributing editor Molly Jong-Fast titled “Deprogram your relatives this Thanksgiving,” the left-wing pundit called the national celebration “terrible” and “no one’s idea of a great time,” though insisted using the time to “deprogram” relatives could make it worthwhile. This Thanksgiving, it’s time to deprogram your relatives @MollyJongFast writes in Wait, What. “Maybe you’ll even change a heart or a mind … Or maybe you’ll need to report a relative to the FBI! Democrats thought it prudent to pass a $1.7 trillion Build Back Better Act while Americans grapple with rising food costs ahead of Thanksgiving. President Joe Biden tasked his legislative majority with passing three major bills: the $1.9 trillion coronavirus bill, the American Rescue Plan, the $1.2 trillion so-called bipartisan infrastructure bill, or the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the $1.7 trillion reconciliation bill, or the Build Back Better Act. Together these three bills represent trillions of dollars in social welfare programs. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) passed the American Rescue Plan in March, and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November, leaving the Congress to pass the Build Back Better Act. Pelosi and Schumer plan to use budgetary reconciliation to pass the legislation. Reconciliation amends budget spending and allows for Congress to pass the bill using only a simple majority in the Senate, although the bill must solely focus on spending and taxation. President Donald Trump used reconciliation to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017; however, his GOP-led...

Pekoske warned travelers to "just be patient" navigating travel, especially because some people have...
