During a week of confusion and tumult, reports and rumors, the Chicago Bears needed something to lean on. Anything, really. Burdened by their five-game losing streak and then left to sift through the growing uncertainty regarding coach Matt Nagy’s job security, players and coaches had to push to retain their focus and the concentration of those around them. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton was happy to do his part. On Wednesday night, at Nagy’s behest, Dalton spoke to the team at their hotel as a way of helping to recenter the group. A day later, he threw for 317 yards, drilled a 17-yard second-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Jimmy Graham and led an 18-play, game-winning field-goal drive that allowed the Bears to edge the last-place Detroit Lions 16-14 on the final snap at Ford Field. Dalton’s Thanksgiving eve pep talk? “I just spoke from the heart,” he said. “It’s what it all boils down to. I just felt like there was something in talking about what we needed in this moment.” Added receiver Darnell Mooney on...

Getty O.J. Simpson during a 2017 parole hearing in Nevada. It might seem like hyperbole to say the Detroit Lions are setting back the game of football with their offensive play calls in 2021, but with a national television audience on Thanksgiving, the rest of the world got to understand how that could potentially be the case. The Lions struggled badly against the Chicago Bears to the tune of just 14 points and an ugly 239 yards of total offense. Worse yet, the Lions continue to look sloppy and fail at executing the fundamentals, and everyone who was sitting around for the game was a captive audience for the mess. Playing on Thanksgiving is nothing new for the Chicago Bears, who have done it 37 times — the third most in the NFL. Known as the Decatur and then Chicago Staleys for its first two Thanksgiving games, the team competed on the November holiday annually for 19 consecutive years from 1920-38. The venue that has hosted the Bears most on Thanksgiving — 11 times — is Wrigley Field. Here’s a look back at the team’s record on the holiday from the past century. Memorable Thanksgiving game moments for the Bears Nov. 26, 1925: The Bears and Chicago Cardinals play to a scoreless tie at Wrigley Field before 36,000 people — then the largest crowd in professional football history. Marred by a three-game losing streak, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr ignored fans calling for him to be benched and turned to words of wisdom from his disgraced ex-coach Jon Gruden. Carr desperately needed a strong performance against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, and he delivered, leading the Raiders to an overtime victory on the big stage. After the win, Carr told reporters he leaned on advice from his former coach. “Gruden used to tell me, ‘don’t ever take your arm out of a game,’ so when we call these things, let’s rip em,” Carr said, referring to the need to stay aggressive with their vertical game. Gruden and the Raiders parted ways last month, after leaked emails showed the head coach using racist, sexist and homophobic language between 2011 and 2018. Rich Bisaccia took over as head coach of the Raiders after Gruden’s unceremonious exit. But Carr listened to the old advice of his former coach on Thursday, the quarterback stayed aggressive and relied on his arm during a shootout with Cowboys star Dak Prescott, converting 24...
(CNN)Daniel Carlson kicked a 29-yard field goal in overtime to condemn the Dallas Cowboys to a heartbreaking home 36-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thanksgiving. In what was a penalty-ridden NFL game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, a pass interference called on Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown kept the Raiders drive alive in overtime with the scores knotted up. The penalty allowed Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr to set his team up within manageable field goal range to claim a famous victory, and Carlson duly converted his fifth field goal of the game. The win ends a three-game losing streak for the Raiders and is their first Thanksgiving victory since 1968. It is a crushing defeat for the Cowboys who have Super Bowl aspirations this season. A series of harrowing stories of brutal murders, shocking disappearances, and other violent crimes have marred the holiday season in the US over the last few years. 10Christopher McDonnel, 28, was one of three suspects involved in a shooting spree last yearCredit: AP 10One man was shot dead at a 7-Eleven, and three others were hurtCredit: Google Last year's festive season was no exception, with a heavily-tattooed trio carrying out a terrifying 11-hour, two-state Thanksgiving Day rampage across Nevada and Arizona which targeted random passers-by. Shawn McDonnell, 31, his brother Christopher McDonnel, 28, and his wife Kayleigh Lewis, 26, were each charged with dozens of crimes related to the shootings last November which left one 22-year-old man dead and four others injured. TWO-STATE RAMPAGE The indiscriminate spree began on November 26 in at a 7-Eleven in southern Nevada where Kevin Mendiola Jr. was fatally struck. His...

RG3’s Historic Day Among Greatest NFL Thanksgiving Day Moments originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington   Thanksgiving and the NFL have been a holiday tradition since the early days of the NFL. The league first began hosting Thanksgiving Day games each year in 1920 only halting during the early 1940s due to World War II. The Detroit Lions have hosted a game on Thanksgiving Day every year since 1934 and the Dallas Cowboys joined them in the tradition in 1966. The NFL added a primetime game to the Thanksgiving day slate in 2006, giving fans three games to watch throughout the day. This year the Lions will face the Chicago Bears on Turkey Day for the second time in three years, the Cowboys will welcome the Las Vegas Raiders in the late afternoon window and the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints will battle in primetime on NBC and Peacock. Thanksgiving Day football games have also been full of memorable moments throughout the years. Before Thursday’s games, here’s a look at some of the most epic performances from the NFL’s...
DETROIT (CBS) — Head Coach Matt Nagy will be at the helm in the Bears’ Thanksgiving Day matinee against the winless Detroit Lions. Before the team headed to Michigan, Bears Chairman George McCaskey reportedly told the coaches and players there is no truth to the report claiming Nagy would be fired after the Thursday game. Nagy said he doesn’t expect to talk to Pace or team ownership again until after Thursday’s game, and would not reveal the last time he spoke to them. READ MORE: Getting...
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff should be available for the Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears barring a setback. The Lions faced off with the Browns last weekend with Tim Boyle at the helm because Jared Goff had an oblique injury. Goff went into this week as a game-time decision but with the Thanksgiving meeting with the Bears approaches, there seems to be some clarity about his availability.Lions plan to start Jared Goff vs. BearsIan Rapoport reported that “the Lions are planning to start QB Jared Goff (oblique) tomorrow…barring any setback overnight.” Detroit is still seeking their first win of the season but they’ve played most opponents close. Boyle came close to pulling off a miracle against the Browns, losing 13-10, despite throwing for just 77 yards. He threw two interceptions as well. Goff hasn’t had much more success in the winning department but he can definitely sling it more capably than Boyle. He’s averaging 234.3 yards per game with a rating of 84.0. He has eight touchdowns and six interceptions. The Lions may be one strong performance from...
And the meek shall inherit the first draft pick. Or not. When the Jets visit the Texans on Sunday, there are no playoff implications — or even dreams. Both teams are 2-8, deservedly so. Yet the winner might eliminate itself from competition for the top overall spot in next April’s draft. Consider that Detroit and Jacksonville also are tail-enders with a solid shot at the NFL’s worst record, and either the Jets or Texans will move ahead of the other, barring a tie. Regardless, neither rookie coach, New York’s Robert Saleh nor Houston’s David Culley, is looking past the weak opposition this weekend. Because, of course, their clubs are equally feeble. “We’re 2-8. We played well enough to win, but we didn’t play as well as we need to play moving forward to win,” Culley says. “We’re not looking down on anybody. “It happens to be the Jets; the next team is the most important. You always want the win. You get the win, the thing is to get the win. That’s all we’re thinking about right now.” Houston...
(CBS DFW) — It’s been a rough month for the Las Vegas Raiders (5-5) and Dallas Cowboys (7-3). The Raiders started November atop the AFC West, having overcome a scandal-induced coaching change to win five games on the season. They haven’t won since. The Cowboys walloped the Atlanta Falcons a couple weeks ago. But bookending that impressive win are a complete collapse against the Denver Broncos and a partial collapse against the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s unclear which Dallas team will show up on Thanksgiving against the Raiders. The high-scoring Cowboys offense failed to find the end zone in Week 11, settling for three field goals. That wasn’t enough. They lost 19-9 and gave back a game to the Philadelphia Eagles in the division standings. Dak Prescott had a rough afternoon, going 28-43 for 216 yards and two interceptions. He was sacked five times and spent much of the game under duress. Tight end Dalton Schultz caught six passes for 53 yards; Michael Gallup hauled in five passes for 44 yards. Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard combined for 82 yards...
