There were also small protests against the pope on the island of Cyprus, where he stopped earlier in the trip. At 95, film-maker and comedian Mel Brooks has won every award in showbiz, including Emmys, Grammys, Tonys, an Oscar and a Bafta Fellowship. But as he reveals in his autobiography, out later this week, he grew up in the heart of New York’s garment industry and says: ‘Movies saved my life. They rescued my soul.’ Here, he tells how he owes his success to superstars including Peter Sellers and Liza Minnelli . . .  One night, at about two in the morning, I was awakened by pebbles being tossed against my bedroom window. I opened it to see what was going on. When I did, I got hit with a few. There, down on the street, was Dustin Hoffman. Before I could say: ‘What the hell are you doing?’ he shouted: ‘Come down! We have to talk.’ He wasn’t famous yet. He actually lived on my block in Greenwich Village, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. This was 1967, and I’d just signed Dustin to play a demented, Nazi-loving playwright in a musical comedy I planned to call Springtime For Hitler....

Apparently, the mother-in-law even stopped the daughter-in-law from...

Rittenhouse was acquitted of multiple counts, including felony murder, last week after a jury agreed that he had in fact acted in self-defense when he fatally shot two men and wounded a third during the Black Lives Matter Riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin last summer. What else? In a tweet posted Monday morning, the DuPage Democratic Party condemned Lemanski's tweets as "incredibly insensitive." Black Lives Matter protesters demonstrating on the steps of Kenosha's courthouse threatened on Tuesday to 'shut down' the city if Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted, as the National Guard were put on standby to deal with any potential unrest. An activist with a megaphone, wearing a BLM hoodie, urged on his fellow protesters, chanting: 'If Kenosha don't get it, shut it down'. He then began chanting: 'Seven shots in the back' - a reference to Jacob Blake, a black man who was shot seven times by a white officer in Kenosha on August 23, 2020. Blake's shooting sparked the Kenosha riots, during which Rittenhouse on August 25, 2020 shot and killed two white BLM demonstrators and injured a third. The jury in Rittenhouse's case began their deliberations on Tuesday after an intense two-week trial. Rittenhouse is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and other counts for killing Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and wounding Gaige Grosskreutz.  Ahead of the verdict, the governor of Wisconsin, Tony Evers, ordered 500 members of the National Guard to be put on standby, 60 miles away, in...

Chris Christie said 'of course' former President Donald Trump could have done more to prevent and end the January 6 Capitol attack.   Christie sat down for an interview on Axios on HBO, which aired Sunday, and talked about his falling out with Trump, who he had been friends with for 20 years.  'Well he said the election was stolen and it wasn't,' Christie said. 'Then January 6 happened as well.'          Christie said he was 'desperate' to reach Trump on the day of the attack and corresponded with Kellyanne Conway to strategize on how to get Trump to denounce the violence. When he was eight years old, Wilbur Smith saw his father kill three man-eating lions. The animals attacked their safari camp at night and, woken by the screams of a guide, Herbert Smith grabbed a torch and his heavy rifle. On the way out of his tent, Herbert lunged headfirst into the tent pole and smashed his nose open. Wilbur saw the gush of blood, and at the same moment realised his father was wearing only a pyjama top, and was naked from the waist down. Then the lion charged. Herbert trained the torch beam on it with his left hand, raised the rifle with his right and shot from the waist, as if he was holding a pistol. He hit the lion in the chest. Seconds later, he brought down the two lionesses. He sold more than 120 million books worldwide, translated into 30 languages, before...

WATCH: “Afghanistan is hell on earth for those living there,” Graham told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” “To the veterans who fought in Afghanistan: tomorrow is Veterans’ Day. I mourn with you. We betrayed our allies in Afghanistan. The Biden administration withdrew all our forces in a dishonorable way,” Graham continued. (RELATED: Sen. As Daily Kos has continued to cover, Republicans have been more than happy to scapegoat trans Americans and stir faux outrage about trans youth having even the most basic dignities and opportunities, especially while at school. We’ve seen, for example, Republicans push discriminatory sports bills that aim to keep trans youth from participating on teams that align with their gender identity, as well as bills trying to bar trans youth from receiving safe, age-appropriate, gender-affirming medical care. Some of these bills have fizzled in committee, while some have been signed into law by Republican governors. Either way, however, we know trans youth report disproportionate levels of bullying, discrimination, and harassment when compared to cisgender peers. A recent incident comes to us from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area,  where a 14-year-old trans girl, Willow Andring, says she was called names and attacked at her school because of her gender identity. According to Willow’s mom, her daughter suffered a concussion from the attack. Heather Andring, Willow’s mother, told local outlet Pittsburgh Action 4 News she was “shocked and sad and sort of in disbelief”...

Nancy Pelosi demanded Tuesday for an investigation from Congress and police into Paul Gosar's now-deleted tweet of a doctored anime video showing him killing fellow representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. 'Threats of violence against Members of Congress and the President of the United States must not be tolerated,' the House Speaker tweeted. She called on Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to 'join in condemning this horrific video and call on the Ethics Committee and law enforcement to investigate.' On Monday evening, Gosar's sister told MSNBC that the video shows the Arizona representative is in a 'mental decline'. Jennifer Gosar said she spoke with her other brother, Tim, about their brother's mental state and how it's 'getting worse.' 'He has not been held accountable in any way, shape or form,' Ms. Gosar said as she called on not only Republicans, but also Democrats to do something about her brother's actions in Congress. She said that Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Attorney General Merrick Garland should all act to get Goar censured, expelled or have his seat forfeited. 'Does he need to...

When Dr Sandra Lee started an Instagram account in 2014 to showcase her work as a dermatologist, people were only mildly interested in how she administered Botox and tackled skin cancer. But after she posted a clip of a blackhead being squeezed, something almost all of us have done in the privacy of our own homes, people got very, very excited. As Dr Lee began posting other grotesque but strangely satisfying videos of extractions of squishy blackheads, removing whiteheads as hard as pebbles and excising inflamed cysts the size of small volcanoes, her career as a social media star, well, erupted. Seven years on, using the catchy nickname of Dr Pimple Popper, the 50-year-old has rock star status in the world of dermatology, with fans including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian — both self-confessed ‘popaholics’. Dr Sandra Lee (pictured), who boasts over 7.3 million YouTube subscribers and 4.4 million followers on Instagram, reflected on her career as a social media star  Dr Lee’s videos on her YouTube channel have been viewed an astonishing 1.8 billion times in total — she...

ABC Sasha Farber and Emma Slater Some fans of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” professional dancers Emma Slater and Sasha Farber are speculating that the married couple has decided to go their separate ways. The speculation comes straight in the middle of season 30 of the reality ballroom dance competition, which they are both still competing on. Farber is partnered with Olympic gymnast Suni Lee while Slater is partnered with country singer Jimmie Allen. Fans have pointed to the fact that neither Farber nor Slater have posted about one another on Instagram in months, and the fact that they have not been seen together in public. The latter does not hold much weight during the season, however, as the two are not allowed to live with one another during the season due to strict health and safety protocols for the couples. It’s also possible that that’s the reason they have not been interacting or posting photos of each other on social media. The last time Farber appears in a post Slater’s Instagram, for the record, was on May...

An unusual comet dubbed a 'giant space volcano' has blown its top, sending so-called 'cryomagma' hurtling into outer space, according to astronomers. Known as 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, it is one of the most bizarre objects in the solar system and orbits the sun just beyond Jupiter at 26,000 miles per hour.                       by Kendall Tietz  The New Hampshire School Boards Association chapter is the latest state-level organization to withdraw its membership from the National School Boards Association. The New Hampshire School Boards Association (NHSBA) sent out a letter to its members on Thursday that informed them of its plans “to withdraw its membership from the National School Boards Association, effective immediately.” The group cited the National School Boards Association’s (NSBA) actions that “have made our continued membership untenable.” “NHSBA is finalizing its formal letter to the National School Boards Association relative to our withdrawal,” the email continued. “We will share that letter with membership as soon as possible.” New Hampshire joins four other states, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania that have withdrawn their membership from the NSBA over its Sept. 29 letter that asked President Joe Biden’s administration to use statutes such as the PATRIOT Act to stop threats and violence in public schools toward school board members over actions that could be “the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.” On Oct 4.,...

I've been fat-shamed and shamed for speaking out against aspects of beliefs within the community and more. However, I've pushed through and...

(CNN)At a rally over the weekend, former Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe did something his party has repeatedly bashed Donald Trump and Republicans for doing: He suggested a past election had been unfairly decided because of ballot shenanigans. With 2018 Georgia gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams by his side, McAuliffe said this:"She would be the governor of Georgia today had the governor of Georgia not disenfranchised 1.4 million Georgia voters before the election. That's what happened to Stacey Abrams. They took the votes away."Which is not, in fact, what happened. Let's go back and revisit what we know about that 2018 race.Read MoreAt the heart of the controversy surrounding it was the fact that Brian Kemp refused to resign as secretary of state -- who oversees Georgia's elections -- while he was an active candidate for governor. Kemp repeatedly refused to do so. "While outside agitators disparage this office and falsely attack us, we have kept our head down and remained focused on ensuring secure, accessible, and fair elections for all voters," he said in a statement in October 2018.Democrats also noted...

CNN host Jake Tapper grilled White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Friday over White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain endorsing a tweet by a former senior Obama economic adviser stating that current economic problems are “high class problems.” Jason Furman, who served as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama, tweeted on Wednesday, “Most of the economic problems we’re facing (inflation, supply chains, etc.) are high class problems. We wouldn’t have had them if the unemployment rate was still 10 percent. Chris Piasick Fight disinformation. Get a daily recap of the facts that matter. Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter. It would be hard to deny today that the male chauvinist pig is still alive and kicking, running amok in his own filth. The election of Donald Trump and his “grab ’em by the pussy” regime mixed misogyny, mockery, and race privilege with delight. Andrew Cuomo’s domineering behavior in politics echoed his sexually belittling actions in private. Both were proud of being jerks, personally and professionally, and both got called “male chauvinist pigs.” Calling someone a male chauvinist pig offers sweet revenge, a chance to dehumanize those who dehumanized you. But the insult contains more than a laugh. The three jabs in quick succession—male, chauvinist, pig—are part of feminist attempts to place men’s sexism within a broader American political milieu. The phrase is also a prime example of how men respond to being called sexist: They think it’s funny. Named after the (probably apocryphal) French soldier Nicolas Chauvin, who kept trumpeting Napoleon’s greatness no matter the ill treatment doled out...

(CNN)California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law Thursday making the state the first to prohibit "stealthing," or removing a condom during intercourse without a partner's verbal consent. The new law makes the removal of a condom without consent a sexual assault, and affirms that the practice "causes long-term physical and emotional harms to its victims," according to State Assemb. Cristina Garcia, a Democrat and author of the bill. Garcia, a longtime proponent of the law, said reports of stealthing were increasing among women and gay men. She said she hopes other states follow with similar legislation making clear that "stealthing is not just immoral but illegal."Garcia also authored Assembly Bill 1171, which Newsom also signed, to eliminate the "spousal rape exception" and "ensure that 'spousal rape' is treated and punished, as seriously as the rape of a non-spouse," according to the assemblywoman."Rape is rape," Garcia said. "And a marriage license is not an excuse for committing one of society's most violent and sadistic crimes."Read MoreIn a statement, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said, "This bill will ensure...

I really mean it. They're getting the living hell kicked out of them—sometimes physically.' Biden did not reveal whether his call had helped get his friend's significant other to be seen by a doctor, or any other details about the story.   He then got back to touting his vaccine mandates,...
Fox News host Greg Gutfeld made it clear Wednesday that he was not impressed with people making excuses for the protesters who chased Democratic Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema into a bathroom. Gutfeld discussed the incident – where Sinema was verbally accosted in a ladies’ room by protesters trying to pressure her into voting for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package — on “The Five.” He said that those defending the protestors were essentially suggesting that Sinema had “asked for it.” (RELATED: ‘Let Me Respond To Your Lie’: Greg Gutfeld And Geraldo Rivera Trade Barbs In Heated Exchange) WATCH: Cohost Dana Perino brought up the subject and noted that even President Joe Biden had responded to the incident by saying, “It’s part of the process.” “Kirsten Powers at CNN had this tweet,” Perino continued, reading the tweet aloud. “‘Which is worse – your grandparents being deported or being followed into a bathroom because you refused to stop and listen to people desperate for your help? This is not a trick question.'” “When people called her on this, [Powers] said ‘If...

The former Facebook product manager for civic misinformation told lawmakers that Facebook's algorithm could steer young users from something relatively innocuous like healthy recipes to content promoting anorexia in a short period of time. Though she stopped short of accusing top executives of intentionally creating harmful products, she said that ultimately, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had to be responsible for the impact of his business. Haugen, who unmasked herself Sunday as the source behind leaked documents at the core of a revealing Wall Street Journal series about Facebook, testified before the Senate Commerce subcommittee on consumer protection. Haugen told "60 Minutes" in an interview aired this weekend that the problems she saw at Facebook were worse than anywhere...
