It was a clear, sunny, blue-sky day the day I learned I had breast cancer. The brutally unexpected so often seems to happen on such days. For a few months over the past summer, I had an intermittent sharp pain under my left breast, as if the wire from a bra was cutting in. Sometimes it woke me at night, sometimes it disappeared for days. But there was no lump or general tenderness.  When I mentioned the pain to anyone, they would say: ‘Well at least it’s not breast cancer because you don’t get a pain with breast cancer.’ But then I read about how Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding, who sadly died of breast cancer in September, experienced a pain which she attributed to a guitar strap rubbing her breast. It made me think that I should get my pain investigated – but not right then. At some point. In the future. It was a clear, sunny, blue-sky day the day I learned I had breast cancer. Princess Aiko of Japan is set to hit the world stage next month as she becomes a working member of the country's imperial family.  But the 19-year-old, who is the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, will have to do without a new tiara and set of jewels when she comes of age next month due to the Covid pandemic.  The little-known teenager was bullied throughout her school years and battled health issues which meant she missed months of her education. However once she turns 20 on December 1, the princess will be thrust into the spotlight as she undertakes official engagements and attends galas fit for royalty.   Yet instead of a new jewellery collection to celebrate this milestone, like ones given to her cousins, Mako Komuro, formerly Princess Mako, and Princess Kako of Akishino, when they came of age, Aiko will be gifted a second-hand piece. The second-year university student, who studies Japanese literature at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, is set to be given her aunt Sayako Kuroda's tiara, according to Royal Central, due to a lack of budget because...

If President Biden's Build Back Better agenda passes the Senate in its current form, the US would have the highest top income tax in the developed world.  The average top tax rate would reach 57.4 percent, and the top rate would breach 50 percent in all 50 states.  The top marginal tax rate at the federal level would be 51.4 percent. Most states also deduct an income tax, the average being 6.0 percent, which would bring the top rate to 57.4 percent.  The top marginal tax rate on income at the federal level is currently 37 percent, scheduled to raise to 39.6 percent in 2026. The marginal rate only applies to those making above the top threshold of half a million dollars per year.   The new top rate would surge the US to the front of the pack of the 38-member Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development - ahead of Japan at 55.9 percent, France at 55.4 percent, Austria at 55.0 percent and Greece at 54.0 percent, according to the Tax Foundation.  The US' current top income tax rate, 42.9 percent,...
Will Smith's new YouTube series Best Shape of My Life is full of laughable, uplifting, and vulnerable moments.  But perhaps the most remarkable piece of Monday's two premiere episodes was his climb to the top of the highest building in the world, Dubai's Burj Khalifa. The structure stands at 2,722ft and is 160 floors. In episode two, My Secret Shame, the 53-year-old made it his mission to reach the peak after a disappointing start to his weight loss and book-writing journey. Ministers claimed the ‘end of coal’ was in sight last night after unveiling a major new agreement to phase it out – but they failed to win any movement from big polluters like China. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said 190 world leaders and bodies had agreed to stop using coal power and would end funding for new plants. And the UK, USA, Poland, Vietnam, Egypt, Chile and Morocco were among more than 40 countries who signed up to a separate commitment to end investment in coal power plants at home and abroad. Mr Kwarteng said it represented a ‘milestone moment’ and that coal had ‘no part to play’ in future power generation. China has refused to commit to reducing its reliance on coal power after President Xi snubbed the Cop26 meeting in Glasgow The new commitments did not include major polluters like China, India, Russia and Brazil, pictured an open-pit coal mine in Ordos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China But, crucially, the new commitments did not include major polluters like China, India, Russia and Brazil. A dad is going viral on TikTok for changing his daughter's Disney books to remove all 'gender stereotypes' in the hopes of encouraging his child not to 'settle' for society's sexist standards. The Minnesota-based father, who is known only as @dcaspers online, put his graphic editing skills to use by transforming a series of Disney story books to alter the plotlines, documenting the entire process in a host of now-viral videos.  Explaining that he wanted to 'teach his daughter not to settle for the stereotypes' found in the books, the dad took it upon himself to change the endings of the princess-focused stories, in many cases writing solo scripts for the characters, which see them leaving their princes in favor of pursuing their dreams.   The doting dad recorded the entire process and posted it on TikTok, which quickly garnered him millions of views and thousands of comments - while sparking furious debate among users, some of whom have accused him of 'ruining' the classic fairytales with his 'woke' adaptations.  TikTok user @dcaspers going viral for changing his daughter's Disney books. It's one of the great disappearing acts of all time. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has not been seen since the day he quit office in disgrace nearly two months ago. He owns no known property and has been living at no fixed abode since leaving the executive mansion in Albany on August 23.  But in the eight long weeks since he moved out from 138 Eagle Street, the man who was everywhere when he was appearing in televised Covid press conferences for 96 days in a row has seemingly vanished from the face of the earth. His only public utterance was when he posted three pictures of himself with a few days' growth of beard on a boat with his three-year-old Siberian husky Captain on Instagram last month.  Disgraced New York governor Andrew Cuomo has not been seen in public since he left the executive mansion in Albany on August 23. Emily Ratajkowski has shared her anguish over her decision to accuse Robin Thicke of groping her in her new book, saying her 'beliefs and politics evolved' to the point where she couldn't remain silent any longer.  Ratajkowski was 21 years old when she danced topless in the video for the song, a massive hit that spent 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. Earlier this month, the model accused singer Robin Thicke, 44, of 'groping' her bare breasts as they shot the suggestive clip in 2013. On Thursday, she took to Instagram to offer a further explanation of why she made the claim.  She said she included an essay about her experiences on set in her new book, My Body, because 'it says so much about the evolution of my beliefs and politics.'  'I had a hard time writing that essay for a bunch of different reasons,' Emily began in a lengthy post shared during an Instagram Q&A on Thursday Earlier this month, the 30-year-old model accused singer Robin Thicke of 'groping' her bare breasts as they shot the suggestive music video...
Previously unseen footage shows the 'real-life Tarzan' experiencing civilisation for the first time after surviving in the Vietnamese wilderness for four decades. Ho Van Lang died aged 52 in September following his reintegration into mainstream society after surviving 41 years in the jungle with his father who fled in 1972 when US carpet bombing during the Vietnam War killed half his family. The pair re-established contact with Vietnamese society in 2013 and believed the Vietnam War was still raging on when they entered a village and sought medical help for Lang's father Ho Van Thanh. After 2013, Lang began living a relatively modern lifestyle, but some friends and observers believe the stresses and poor diet of the 'civilised' world had a detrimental effect on his health.  Now, remarkable footage has emerged showing a shocked Lang's first impression of the ocean and his puzzled reaction when taking to the skies for the first ever time.  Video of Ho Van Lang's first encounters with everyday interactions have gone viral on social media after it was shared by his friend and filmmaker Alvaro Cerezo. ...

MANCHESTER UNITED lost 4-2 at Leicester City on Saturday, a result which signalled the end of their 29-game unbeaten run away from home. As Tom McDermott explains though, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has far more pressing problems, including trying to save his own job. 3Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked a beaten man at the end of the Leicester matchCredit: AFP How do you want to look at it, because whatever way you analyse United’s recent form, it isn’t good. Just the two wins in seven games, conceding 11 along the way? Or, one clean sheet in 19? The last three Premier League fixtures alone, against Aston Villa (home), Everton (home) and Leicester City (away), have seen Solskjaer’s side take just ONE point. It’s simply not good enough. As we approach Solskjaer’s third year in charge, the team have a formation but no style of play. Defensively, they’re predictable, and any average is able to cut through them and cause problems. The “off the record” word from the club following the result at the weekend was that they will continue...

Linda’s son was shy, even as a baby. He didn’t play well with others. Not that he was mean; he just didn’t know how. At age 13, he started a gaming profile to play fantasy games. Hearing him interact with other players over the headset made Linda happy. Middle school was hard for him. The family had moved. It was a new school. He was depressed. He was in and out of therapy because he hated it. All he wanted was to feel normal, but the therapy made him feel like he was “not human.” Linda, played by Ann Dowd in the new film Mass, is sharing what she remembers about her son because Gail, played by Martha Plimpton has asked her to. “Why do I want to know about your son?” Gail says. “Because he killed mine.” Written and directed by Fran Kranz, Mass is a volcanic, unflinching depiction of four parents navigating the unthinkable. Years before, Linda and Richard’s (Reed Birney) son opened fire on his classmates at his high school, before going to the library and taking...

Previously unseen German accounts of the First World War's Christmas Day truce have come to light over 100 years on. British historian Anthony Richards has pored over hundreds of German diaries from the First World War to shed new light on the temporary ceasefire in 1914. The fascinating accounts include one by a soldier who described the truce as a 'miracle' and called the British Tommies his 'brothers'. Another wrote of how the two warring sides treated each other as human beings, exchanged gifts and sang 'beautiful' Christmas carols. But the truce did not sit easy with some of the German officers who were concerned about the affect befriending the enemy would have on the men. One officer wrote how he was torn between rejoicing at the moment of mutual peace and being appalled at the fraternisation with the enemy. The variety of accounts, which are both amusing and poignant, feature in Mr Richards' new book, The True Story of the Christmas Truce. Prince William is urging humanity 'not to give up' in the face of 'terrifying' and 'exponential' climate change. The future British king says he understands why people feel 'so despondent, so fearful and so powerless' in the face of a such a rapidly approaching 'tipping point'. But in the foreword to a new book accompanying his landmark £50million Earthshot Prize, the royal sounds a rare note of optimism. Recalling his very personal moment of clarity following a trip to Namibia in 2018 that led him to set up the initiative, he says: 'I was hit by a wave of global pessimism.  'The headlines were dominated by a sense that world leaders were not moving fast enough. There was widespread finger pointing and political and geographical division. To those of us following at home, it wasn't an inspiring sight. 'I understood why the mood was full of despair, of course. The challenge facing our planet is immense. We were about to enter what scientists say is the most consequential decade in history.' The Vinland Map, which shows a section of North America's coastline southwest of Greenland, is famed for being the earlies imagery of the New World, but a new analysist reveals it 'is awash in 20th-century ink.' Researchers at Yale University found the map believed to have been made in the 15th-century has a titanium compound used in inks first produced in the 1920s. 'The Vinland Map is a fake,' Raymond Clemens, curator of early books and manuscripts at Yale's Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, which houses the map, said in a statement. 'There is no reasonable doubt here. This new analysis should put the matter to rest.' Even more, the study found that the map maker intentionally created a fake. The 20th-century trickster used the modern ink to write out instructions for putting the map together as it would appear on a genuine 15th-century manuscript, which was done so over a Latin inscription. The team believes the inscription is a bookbinder's note guiding the assembly of the Speculum Historiale — an authentic medieval volume and the likely source of...
Almost 300 birds died and 30 were injured in less than 24 hours after hitting the World Trade Center's glass towers in New York City.  Hundreds of songbirds died after flying into several of the World Trade Center towers, leaving piles of carcasses lying on the sidewalk.  The collisions were blamed on the skyscrapers' lights being left on and their reflective glass, which confuses the birds into flying into them.  Melissa Breyer, a volunteer bird collision monitor for New York City Audubon, counted 291 dead birds on Tuesday morning within 65 minutes of walking around WTC Three and Four.  I did this for 65 minutes straight doing one loop around @4WTC and @3NYWTC ¿ most of these before sunrise. The oldest living World War II veteran celebrated his 112th birthday with a celebration outside his home organized by the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.  On Sunday, a small crowd reunited in front of Army veteran Lawrence Brooks' house to commemorate his latest trip around the sun and his service to the country.   Surrounded by golden, white and black balloons, Brooks stood outside his porch and listened to the cheers and 'Happy Birthday' wishes, as he energetically waved to the crowd.  Although he is blind in his right eye and suffers from low blood-pressure, his hearing is in perfect conditions and he is otherwise healthy, the New York Post reported.   The museum has made celebrating Brooks' birthday an annual tradition, beginning with his 105th birthday in 2014. 'We absolutely love Mr. Brooks,' museum vice president Peter Crean told NOLA.com in 2019.  'We've told him, 'As long as you keep having birthdays, we are going to keep having birthday parties for you here.' NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – New Bedford is known as “The Whaling City” for its time as one of the most important whaling ports in the world. In fact, Herman Melville is said to have gotten the inspiration for Moby Dick here. But there’s another giant whale in town and he is the real deal. He’s Kobo, which stands for “King of the Blue Ocean,” and you can find him at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Kobo isn’t just any old whale. He’s the biggest blue whale on the planet. Getting his 66-foot skeleton inside the museum was no small feat. (WBZ-TV) It all started back in 1998. Researchers think Kobo was around 5 years old when he got hit by two different tankers. The second unknowingly dragged his body from Nova Scotia, all the way into Narragansett Bay. “The guy driving the pilot boat is the one who noticed this whale wrapped around the bow of the ship and phone calls start, radio calls start,” Bob Rocha, the museum’s associate curator, told WBZ-TV. “They finally decide to pull this thing...

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly pushing proposals that would mandate university students be fully vaccinated as a requirement to attend lectures. In the latest measure from the British government to coerce younger people to take the coronavirus vaccine, Boris Johnson is reportedly seeking to require universities to ban students who are not fully vaccinated, with a possible exemption for those who cannot take vaccines for health purposes, The Times reported on Monday. Mr Johnson has been pushing for vaccine passports in nightclubs and other public venues, as well as requiring the Premier League to check the vaccination status of football fans. The moves are widely seen as an effort to convince younger people — who have taken up vaccinations much slower than other age cohorts — that their only path to freedom will be to take the jab. Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Monday, Children’s Minister Vicky Ford refused to rule out the plan to require vaccination for attending university lectures but said: “We obviously don’t want to go back to the situation where we had everyone not...

Titmus wasn't an underdog by any means — she beat Ledecky in world championships in 2019 and was viewed by some as the favorite to win on Sunday. But given the age difference (20 to 24) and experience gap, it still felt like somewhat of an upset: a rising star knocking off the most dominant swimmer in the world. Afterward, Titmus credited Ledecky, saying she wouldn't be atop the podium without Ledecky first setting a new standard. "I wouldn't be here without her," Titmus said, telling reporters she thanked Ledecky after the race. "She's...

Acclaimed filmmaker Luchino Visconti scoured Europe in 1970 to find the ‘perfect beauty’ to play the lead in his upcoming film Death In Venice. The successful candidate would have to have the ravishing looks an audience could believe would be sufficient to drive Dirk Bogarde’s character, an ailing and ageing composer, to distraction. But Visconti wasn’t looking for a woman, he was looking for an adolescent boy. He found what he was looking for, casting a 15-year-old Swede, Björn Andrésen, to play a sailor-suited Polish boy named Tadzio. A year later, in London, for the film’s world premiere in front of the Queen and Princess Anne, Visconti proclaimed Andrésen to be ‘the world’s most beautiful boy’, a stunning accolade echoed by some film critics who hailed his blond-locked, almost unearthly beauty as on a par with Michelangelo’s David. He became an overnight superstar — the world’s most fawned-over face — only for his fame to become a ‘living nightmare’ that scarred him for life. Visconti’s ‘most beautiful boy’ remark may have been primarily a marketing stunt but it became a...
