A 17-year-old student has been arrested after threatening to carry out a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida - the scene of the 2018 Parkland school shooting where 17 people were killed. Oliver Manik, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) in Broward County, was arrested after he made the threat in a social media group chat when students involved in the chat reported him to the authorities according to a school spokesperson. The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) quoted Manik as saying: 'I feel like school shooting tomorrow. When I sneeze, it's a signal go to the bathroom. Okay? And I hope y'all aren't snitches.' Students reported the threat to the BSO at 11am local time on Wednesday, and detectives located Manik on Thursday and promptly arrested him, according to BSO spokeswoman Claudinne Caro.   It comes less than two months after Nikolas Cruz, who massacred 14 students and three teachers at the high school with an AR15 in February 2018, pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder and attempted murder, and apologised to the victim's families.   Now...
The wife of notorious drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was sentenced to three years in prison for helping to run the Sinaloa Cartel. U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras sentenced Emma Coronel Aispuro, 32, to three years in prison followed by four years supervised release and fined her $1.5 million as part of her plea deal with federal prosecutors. Coronel pleaded guilty to conspiracy and money laundering charges, but prosecutors sought a four-year sentence and fine due to her clean record and show of remorse. CHINESE NATIONALS PLEAD GUILTY IN MONEY LAUNDERING SCHEME CONNECTED TO EL CHAPO'S CARTEL “We’re pleased with the result, and we’re pleased with the court recognizing her very minimal role,” said Jeffrey Lichtman, Coronel’s lawyer. A federal judge sentenced Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexico's most notorious drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, to three years in prison and 48 months of supervised release. Coronel pleaded guilty earlier this year to assisting her husband's cartel, the Sinaloa cartel, in its drug distribution process while her husband was imprisoned, according to court documents. "The defendant's actual role was a minimal one," prosecutor Anthony Nardozzi said. "The defendant acted primarily in support of her husband. The defendant acted upon his orders, which, in turn, furthered the interests of the criminal cartel. The defendant was not an organizer, leader, boss or other type of manager. Rather, she was a cog in a very large wheel of a criminal organization." The contract for January delivery fell as much as 7% to trade at $4.51 per million British thermal units (MMBtu). The weakness builds on Monday's drop, which saw the contract settle 11.37% lower at $4.85 per MMBtu. Over the last two sessions, futures are down more than 17%. "The weather outlook for the core heating demand months of the winter (December, January, February) suggests higher than normal temperatures in the major US demand centers," said David Givens, head of gas and power services for North America at Argus Media. "[Monday was] the first day that January is the prompt month and both commercial (producers, gas distributors) and non-commercial market participants (speculators, hedge funds, prop shops) are looking at fundamentals [which is] pushing prices down," he added....
CRISTIANO RONALDO ranked outside the top three in the Ballon d'Or list for the first time in 11 years. The Manchester United forward, 36, ended up sixth this year, with just 178 points in the votes. 3Cristiano Ronaldo missed out on a podium finish at the Ballon d'Or awards for the first time since 2010Credit: Getty 3The Portugal hero has five Ballons d'Or but none since 2017Credit: Getty - Contributor That left him 435 points behind his great rival and winner Lionel Messi, who collected his seventh crown. But although Kylian Mbappe looked pretty miffed to be down in ninth, no one was able to witness Ronaldo's reaction - because he snubbed the awards in Paris. Earlier this week, Pascal Ferre, the editor in chief of France Football - organisers of the prestigious award - claimed Ronaldo had revealed to him his only career goal was to win more Ballons d'Or than Messi. But Ronaldo hit back with a fiery statement on Instagram, saying Ferre 'lied' to 'promote his publication'. The 2021 result ends a phenomenal streak of nine successive podium finishes...
CHICAGO (AP) — Two brothers stand at the center of the case that prosecutors will lay before jurors during the trial of Jussie Smollett this week. The former “Empire” actor contends he was the victim of a racist and homophobic assault in downtown Chicago on a frigid night in January 2019. The siblings, who worked with him on the TV show, say he paid them $3,500 to pose as his attackers. A jury was sworn in Monday in the Chicago courtroom, though an unknown number of alternate jurors were still being selected late afternoon. Judge James Linn, who said he expects the trial to take about one week, was asking potential jurors if they have been the victim of a hate crime, if they have watched “Empire” or TMZ, a program and website about celebrities, or if they belong to any civil rights or pro-police organizations. Cameras are not allowed inside the courtroom and the proceedings are not being livestreamed, unlike in other recent high-profile trials. Jussie Smollett, who arrived at the courthouse with his mother and other family members,...
ROMAN ABRAMOVICH attended his first Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge for over THREE YEARS during the draw against Manchester United. The Russian billionaire's prolonged absence from West London has been due to visa complications. 1Roman Abramovich was at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Man Utd having not taken in a game at the stadium since 2018 (pictured)Credit: Reuters But the Chelsea owner is claimed to have been at Stamford Bridge for the 1-1 draw with Man Utd having missed the win over Juventus. Abramovich was in London last week continuing to support the charity work campaigning against antisemitism. However, the Blues chief did so as an Israeli citizen and therefore not on a visa. Abramovich did not attend the 4-0 thumping of Juve as he had to fly to Moscow for a charity event. And The Telegraph now claim the Russian WAS at Stamford Bridge for the frustrating 1-1 draw with United, despite not being picked up by TV cameras. Despite not attending any home matches since 2018 due to his visa application being delayed - leading to...
STANFORD – Stanford’s loss to No. 5 Notre Dame was a fitting end to an ugly month and the worst season in 15 years. The Cardinal finished 3-9, its worst record since going 1-11 in 2006 under Walt Harris, and lost its last seven games after upsetting Oregon. The last four losses, culminating with Saturday’s 45-14 drubbing by the Fighting Irish: were: 52-7 to Utah, 35-14 to Oregon State, and 44-11 against Cal. Composite score: 176-46. The lack of competitiveness in November appears to signal serious issues for a program that was a Pac-12 title contender for a decade but is now 11-19 in its last three seasons. “Too many mistakes, too many errors,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “That’s going to be our focus going into next year.” Here are three big reasons for Stanford’s regression, and whether there is hope that the results will be any different in 2022: SCHEDULE Stanford was the first team since USC in 2011 to play 12 opponents from the Power Five conferences. It was especially...
A former youth football coach in Massachusetts who preyed on minors and took video of himself sexually abusing them has been sentenced in federal court. Derek Sheehan, age 51, a former Norwell youth football coach in Plymouth County, was sentenced to 45 years in prison and five years of supervised release after pleading guilty over the summer to three counts of sexual exploitation of children. “Mr. Sheehan abused his status as a youth football coach to prey on vulnerable children. He manipulated and sexually exploited them for months, and for that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars,” acting US Attorney Nathaniel Mendell said. “There are few crimes deserving of a life sentence, and this is one of them. We do all we can to protect our children and ensure their safety, as this case shows.” Mendell said that in June 2018, one of Sheehan’s minor victims reported to police that the coach had sexually abused him, prompting an investigation by local law enforcement. On Aug. 17, 2018, a search of Sheehan’s Norwell home led to...

A 30-year-old woman who targeted grieving families in the Hudson Valley will spend more than a decade behind bars after being found guilty of burglarizing multiple homes in the region. In October, Bronx resident Latonia Stewart was found guilty of six counts of burglary and criminal possession of stolen property following a weeklong trial for a rash of New York and Connecticut burglaries in Westchester, Fairfield, and Putnam counties between the winter of 2017 and spring 2018. Prosecutors said that Stewart, known as "The Obit Bandit," would search through posted obituaries to find times when the families were out of the house before she burglarized the homes. This week, Stewart was sentenced to a term of 11 to 13 years in state prison. She had faced up to 15 years in prison on each count, for a total of 90 years in prison. Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah said that between December 2017 and May 2018, Stewart burglarized the homes of six Westchester residents in Cortlandt, Greenburgh, Ossining, Rye Brook, Scarsdale, and Tarrytown who were out of the...
A Brazilian girl gang who ran a Deliveroo-style service to ferry drugs round London have been jailed for more than 40 years. The all-female group of drug couriers wore uniforms in an attempt to blend in and even wore co-ordinated pink rucksacks with a 'team' number written on, and a different coloured wallet inside with the driver's name on. The five women admitted a string of drugs charges at a series of hearings held at Southwark Crown Court earlier this year with four of the members being locked up last month along with the male gang leader for a total of 37 and a half years. The final member - the gang's bookkeeper Larissy Nascimento Dos Reis - has now been jailed for two years and three months, bringing to a close the Met's specialist investigation.  Dos Reis kept the books for the gang whose members - Nayara Robeiro, 33, Andressa Santos, 24, and Nayene Fernandez-Silva, 24, - rode mopeds to make deliveries across the capital.  Judge Gregory Perrins described it as a 'professional and highly organised' criminal organisation which supplied...

In fact, this was the second time authorities tried to boot the prolific mortgage dodger from the property since the September 14 decision. Shortly after the judgement, Hanspal's tenant Parmjit Puar submitted an emergency notion to the court begging for a 30-day moratorium because he had "no place to go".               more   Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers (D) released a statement Friday boasting how there he has now granted a total of 307 pardons. Evers announced 29 new pardons saying that it is a “powerful message.” Evers reopened the Governor’s Pardon Advisory Board in 2019, following it being inactive for nine years. Madison’s Fox47 noted Evers has issued more pardons in his first three years as governor than the previous two Wisconsin governors did in their total 16 years in office. In his statement, Evers promised he will “work to continue this important process.” Twenty of the 29 latest pardons are pardoning drug-related offenses, including running a drug trafficking place and possessing or selling marijuana and other controlled substances. According to the statement from Evers, “individuals convicted of a Wisconsin felony may apply for a pardon if they completed their sentence at least five years ago and have no pending criminal charges. Individuals currently required to register on the sex offender registry are ineligible for a pardon.” “A pardon can be a powerful message for individuals who have worked hard to...
UPDATE: A Sussex County junkie who killed a father, son and gas station attendant in a horrific crash on Route 23 in Wayne two years ago will be sentenced to a minimum 25½ years in state prison after pleading guilty Friday to three counts of aggravated manslaughter, authorities said. Jason Vanderee, 29, told a state judge in Paterson that he’d used heroin and fentanyl in combination with other drugs when he blacked out behind the wheel on Feb. 19, 2019. Jon Warbeck, a former Carlstadt firefighter from Fair Lawn and his 17-year-old son, Luke, of Lincoln Park, had stopped for gas at the Delta station on northbound Route 23 around 8:45 a.m. that day. The attendant had just closed the gas cap of their Chevy Camaro convertible when a speeding Honda Pilot with an overdosed Vanderee behind the wheel literally flew into them and the attendant, Lovedeep Fatra, 23, of Pequannock. All three were killed instantly. Security video shows that, based on the speed and point of impact, they couldn't have suffered. In the footage, the airborne Honda Pilot is seen shearing...

A New Jersey gym owner who punched a police officer during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was sentenced Wednesday to more than three years in prison, a likely benchmark for dozens of other rioters who engaged in violence that day. Scott Fairlamb, 44, was the first person to be sentenced for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the Capitol riot. His 41-month prison term is the longest among 32 riot-related sentences handed down so far. Fairlamb's punishment likely will guide other judges who sentence rioters who clashed with police at the Capitol. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth said it was significant that his sentencing of Fairlamb was the first for assaulting an officer, with more guilty pleas likely in the coming months. Lamberth said Fairlamb's actions struck at "the heart of our democracy." He had pleaded guilty, avoiding a trial. "Had you gone to trial, I don't think there's any jury that could have acquitted you or would have acquitted you," the judge said. Fairlamb, a boxing coach and former mixed martial arts fighter, apologized and expressed...
The cost of living in the Bay Area jumped during October, a forbidding new burden for the region’s feeble rebound from coronavirus-linked economic jolts, with food and fuel costs leading the charge to higher prices. The annual inflation rate reached 3.8% in October in the Bay Area compared to the same month the year before. Coupled with the 3.8% Bay Area inflation rate reported in April of this year, the current inflation levels are the highest since late 2018 when inflation was 4.5% in the region, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The cost of food items such as meat, along with unleaded gasoline prices, as well as electricity and natural gas provided by utilities, drove the increase in the region’s consumer price index, this news organization’s analysis of the report shows. Among the dramatic annualized price increases in the Bay Area during October: — Regular unleaded gasoline skyrocketed by a head-spinning 40.2% — Used vehicle costs zoomed 25.6% — Natural gas piped into the home hopped 21.7% higher — Meat, poultry, fish and egg prices soared 13.6% —...
Fans have rushed to social media to praise Paul Judd as 'better loooking than ever' after he won People's Sexiest Man Alive title this week - and pictures prove he's barely aged since hitting our screen three decades ago.  The actor became a household name as Cher's unlikely heart-throb in 1995 hit Clueless, playing Alicia Silverstone's awkward ex-stepbrother Josh Lucas, aged just 26. And this week the Hollywood star, 52, won People's Sexiest Man Alive title, reigniting the much debated topic of how he manages to look so young. The father-of-two has barely aged since making his screen debut as a fresh-faced 22-year-old in a 1991 Nintendo advert, before starring in 1992 drama series Sisters, where he played a supporting role as aspiring filmmaker Kirby Quimby. Showing off an almost line-free face as he appears on the cover of People magazine with the hashtag #crushforlife, Paul looks almost identical to when he hit our screens three decades ago.  And while Tom Cruise, 59, sparked filler rumours when he appeared at a baseball game in San Francisco recently looking fuller-faced, Paul Rudd's...
BANGKOK (AP) — An American journalist jailed in Myanmar for more than five months has been hit with two more criminal charges in addition to the three he already faces, his lawyer said Tuesday. One of the new charges filed against Danny Fenster is under the Counter-Terrorism Act. The law criminalizes contacts with officially designated “terrorist” groups and carries a prison term of three to seven years. It covers “acts of exhortation, persuasion, propaganda and recruitment of any person to participate in any terrorist group or activities of terrorism.” The other charge under Section 124(A) of the Penal Code is usually referred to as treason, and carries a penalty of seven to 20 years’ imprisonment. Myanmar’s military seized power on Feb. 1, ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. It has repeatedly used lethal force against protesters but has been unable to quell popular resistance to its takeover. More than 1,200 civilians are estimated to have been killed and there have been widespread arrests. Fenster was detained at Yangon International Airport on May 24 as he was about...
A black labrador has given birth to an extremely rare mix of pure yellow, chocolate and black puppies in the same litter in a breeding programme that was 15 years in the making. Owners Tina Davis, 62, and her husband Martin Davis, 63, began breeding with a female chocolate Lab in 2006. In the following years, the couple from Horsham, West Sussex bred a mixture of yellow, chocolate and black Labs and decided to strategically mix dog DNA to produce a litter of all three. They have used Wylanbria Kennels as their stud farm, whose owner Diana Stevens, 47, helped them breed a line of studs with whom their bitches could successfully produce a mixed litter.  The ten adorable pups - two yellow, three chocolate and five black - were born on October 18 and have already been matched with permanent loving homes.   Retired hotelier Tina said: 'We've always loved dogs, and when a friend decided to go abroad...

Married couples who meet online are six times more likely to divorce within the first three years than those who meet their partners through more traditional routes. Research has found that 12 per cent of couples who met over the internet did not make their leather – third – anniversary, compared to just two per cent who found love via family or friends. The report, by the Marriage Foundation, suggests that those who meet online are at higher risk of divorce because they could be 'relative strangers' when they tie the knot. Getty Derrick Rose goes for a basket against the Chicago Bulls. The New York Knicks rolled with Elfrid Payton at starting point guard for most of last season, something that didn’t bode well for them in the playoffs. In the offseason, they set out to make an upgrade there, and that’s exactly what they did. Kemba Walker is now the starting point guard with Derrick Rose backing him up, so the position can provide much more offense now. In fact, they are already set to surpass last year’s point guard position in a very important area. Through five games, where the Knicks sit 4-1, Walker and Rose have combined for 30 three pointers. To put that in perspective, the starting point guard for the Knicks hit 29 total last season. This is definitely a new Knicks team we’re looking at this year.New Point Guard, New Team Point Godsend: Kemba Walker and Derrick Rose are shooting a combined 30/53 (56.6%) from 3PT over the first five games. PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Tomorrow is a day Pittsburgh will never forget, marking three years since 11 lives were lost in the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in United States history. On Oct. 27, 2018, a normal Saturday in Squirrel Hill became an unimaginable nightmare when a gunman opened fire inside the Tree of Life Synagogue, killing 11 people and injuring several others. Now, three years later, we will pause to remember and reflect in spirit and action. (Photo Credit: KDKA) An official commemoration ceremony will take place on Wednesday in Schenley Park. Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald are expected to be in attendance. Last year, ceremonies to commemorate the lives lost in the attack were held virtually, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Look Back At Oct. 27, 2018 Pittsburgh’s darkest day began as a rainy and dreary October morning like any other in the fall — but the world’s eyes would soon turn to Squirrel Hill, as unthinkable hatred shattered one of the city’s most peaceful neighborhoods. Getty Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis looks on following a preseason bout with the Utah Jazz. Kristaps Porzingis’ ability (or lack thereof) to provide adequate support for Luka Doncic and Tim Hardaway Jr. continues to be a hot topic for Dallas Mavericks fans. He hasn’t done himself any favors, either, by putting up 14.5 points per contest on just 33.3% shooting and 23.1% from deep through two games. The big question — and one that has been floating around for three-plus years now — is whether the Mavs can get where they want to go while doling out massive sums to the former All-Star. According to one hoops scribe, the answer to that question may just be a big, fat no. On Tuesday, Bleacher Report put out a roundtable list of early hot takes for every team in the Association (with the small sample size qualifier). Where Dallas is concerned, Andy Bailey opined that Porzingis “won’t finish the season as a Maverick.”An Awkward Fit? The owners of The Station nightclub in Rhode Island - where 100 people died in an inferno caused by a rock band's pyrotechnics back in 2003 - are finally telling their side of the story for the first time after nearly 20 years of silence. Jeffrey and Michael Derderian claim that 'sound foam' installed in the West Warwick club was actually 'cheap packing foam' that helped the deadly fire spread, burning the building to the ground in just three minutes, the brothers said in their first public interview on the incident with 48 Hours. 'We wanted the full story to come out, not just some of it, and that for people who want to, come to their own conclusion on what happened that night,' Jeffrey Derderian told 48 Hours' Jim Axelrod, a three-minute snippet of which was released on Thursday.  'We understand the enormity of what happened. People suffered enormously,' Jeffrey told the Boston Globe in a separate interview prior to the premiere of their upcoming 48 Hours segment.  'We don't want sympathy, but it never leaves us.'
