More than four-in-five voters think Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is handling the Channel migrant crisis badly, with more than three-quarters of Conservative Party supporters thinking the same. The YouGov poll commissioned by The Times and released on Tuesday revealed that 82 per cent of Britons think that the government is handling the migrant crisis “badly”. Even amongst Conservative voters, who may have been assumed to have some residual loyalty to the Tory Prime Minister, 77 per cent think that the Johnson administration is handling the crisis poorly. The English Channel has seen more than 25,000 illegals land on Britain’s shores since the beginning of this year, triple on last year. The research was undertaken between the 24th and 25th of November, immediately after 27 migrants drowned in the English Channel off the coast of France while trying to illegally travel to Britain. In terms of what is to blame for the rising numbers of illegals trying to get to the UK, however, the most popular belief, at 25 per cent, was “the French government’s handling of the issue”, with...
LESBOS, Greece (AP) — When Pope Francis visited the Greek island of Lesbos in 2016, he was so moved by the stories he heard from families fleeing war in Iraq and Syria that he wept and brought a dozen refugees home with him. Speaking to reporters on the way home that day, he held up a drawing handed to him by a child from the island’s sprawling refugee camp. “Look at this one,” he said, revealing a bird neatly decorated in colored pencil, the word “peace” scrolled in English underneath it. “That’s what children want: Peace.” Francis is returning to Lesbos this week for the first time since that defining day of his papacy, making a repeat visit to the island where hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants have passed through on their journey to Europe. But he will find attitudes toward migrants here have only hardened in the intervening five years, as they have elsewhere in Europe, with tensions flaring on the border between European Union country Poland and Belarus and more deadly crossings —...
Nigel Farage has accused the British government of being “utterly rudderless” in the face of a growing migrant crisis in the English Channel and said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson doesn’t have “a clue” how to manage post-Brexit Britain. The Brexit leader, who has hinted at a possible political comeback over the Conservative government’s failures to stop illegal boat migration, said that the issue  — which he has long highlighted — runs the risk of turning into a “national crisis” and that the government is “utterly rudderless” in dealing with it. “I think it is possible that by the spring or summer of next year this [the Channel crossings by migrants] will become a national emergency,” Farage told the Sunday Express. “I think the numbers that will come will dwarf what you are currently seeing. I’ve not been wrong on a single prediction on this. “You can put 20,000 police on the beaches in France but if the pull factors remain as strong here, namely four-star accommodation, three square meals a day, healthcare, dental care, spending money and the massive illegal...
LAST week we were given the starkest possible reminder of how dangerous it is to try and cross the Channel in a small, unseaworthy boat. The criminal gangs forcing people into flimsy dinghies don’t care for the lives of those in the boats, they only care for the cash lining their pockets. 4The criminal gangs forcing people into flimsy dinghies don’t care for the lives of those in the boatsCredit: Reuters 4I have also been consistent in warning that there is no silver bullet that will provide all the answers overnightCredit: PA They are gambling with human lives — as we saw so tragically when 27 people lost their lives in the water on Wednesday. That horrific event only served to underline the need for effective and co-ordinated action on both sides of the Channel, and with our European partners. The reaction of Sun on Sunday readers — and the wider British public — to this devastating loss of life was rightly to ask what the Government will do to prevent further tragedies. Our joint work with the French has...
Asylum claims in the United Kingdom have surged to their highest level in nearly 20 years amid the ongoing migrant crisis in the English Channel, government data has revealed. Statistics released by the Home Office on Thursday, have shown that the number of asylum claims being made in the UK has risen to the highest quarterly level since January to March of 2003, with 15,104 people claiming asylum between July and September. The total number of asylum applications made within the twelve-month period to September was 37,562. This also is the highest number of claims made within a twelve-month period since 2004. Two-thirds of new applicants within that period were migrants who crossed the Channel in small boats from France, The Times reported. Over 25,000 migrants have illegally crossed the Channel this year, around three times last year’s number, with one attempted voyage resulting in the deaths of at least 27 people on Wednesday, including one pregnant woman. The already fractious relationship between France and Britain spiralled further downward into anger and incomprehension Friday, with the two erstwhile European partners at loggerheads about how to stop migrants from embarking on dangerous crossings of the English Channel that killed at least 27 people in a sinking this week. Even as the British government insisted that the two countries "remain close friends and partners," their words, acts and disputes over migration, fishing and how to rebuild a working relationship in the wake of Britain’s exit from the EU increasingly suggested otherwise. President Emmanuel Macron scolded Prime Minister Boris Johnson for making public a letter that the British leader sent to the French leader on Thursday. Most notably, Johnson proposed that France take back migrants who illegally cross the Channel from French to British shores. Macron's spokesman quickly and summarily dismissed the idea, and the French president made his displeasure clear that Johnson posted the letter — addressed "Dear Emmanuel" — on Twitter. "I am surprised by methods when they are not serious," Macron said on a visit to Italy. "You...
Brexit leader Nigel Farage has slammed the Border Force, the Home Office, and Home Secretary Priti Patel as “not fit for purpose” after at least 27 migrants drowned off the coast of France attempting to reach the United Kingdom. While conservative grandee Ann Widdecombe has said that Britain must remove the “magnets” that draw illegals to come to Britain, including the illegal economy and the often rightly-proved assumption that to arrive in the UK is to remain, with little real danger of deportation. Overnight saw the estimated numbers of illegals dead from drowning in the English Channel downgraded from 31 to 27, but the International Organization for Migration has stated that the figure remains the highest number to have died in a single event in the English Channel since the body began keeping records in 2014. A blame game between British and French authorities has since ensued — and in some measure, has continued — over who is responsible for allowing the dangerous crossings to occur. Brexit leader Nigel Farage has been criticising the British government in the past for...
Dozens of illegal boat migrants have reportedly drowned in the English Channel after their small boat capsized while trying to reach Britain from France. A huge rescue mission was undertaken on Wednesday after a boat full of illegal migrants capsized off the coast of Calais, France, in what is believed to be the deadliest drowning in the history of the Channel migrant crisis. UPDATE 2000: French President Emmanuel Macron Makes Statement Addressing the tragedy in the English Channel, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday evening that “France will not let the Channel become a cemetery.” The French leader went on to call for an “emergency meeting of European ministers” to discuss the migrant crisis. Macron also demanded that there should be an “immediate strengthening of the resources” for the EU’s Frontex border agency. The French president concluded by vowing that “everything will be done to find and condemn those responsible” for the tragedy. UPDATE 1930: French Interior Minister Says 31 Dead in the Channel At a press conference from a hospital in Calais, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported that...
The Biden administration is finally expressing concern over a border crisis, but not the one affecting the U.S. Joe Biden recently stated that the migrant crisis at the Belarusian-Polish border is of “great concern” to his administration, at the same time he has continued to downplay the crisis at the U.S. southern border. “We’ve communicated our concern to Russia, we’ve communicated our concern to Belarus,”Biden told reporters earlier this month. “We think it’s a problem.” Kamala Harris echoed those concerns during a recent trip to Paris, saying that the government in Belarus is engaging in “very troubling activity.” Harris was named border czar in the early months of the administration, and was tasked with discovering the “root causes” of mass migration into the U.S. Just days after Harris’ comments, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said during Senate testimony that Harris isn’t actually the border czar, and struggled to explain her role in fixing America’s immigration system. It would seem that Biden and Harris have given more attention to the migrant crisis overseas than the one currently occurring at...
Approximately 25,000 illegal aliens have crossed the English Channel from France since the beginning of this year, around triple the number that arrived in 2020, when 8,404 made the journey. The estimations were revealed as the government appears to have gone into panic mode over the English Channel migrant crisis, with a government review looking into the record number of landings. Public perception of the government’s handling of the situation is not favourable to the Johnson administration, either, with the majority of all voters and three-quarters of those who backed Boris in the 2019 election thinking the Tories are “too soft” in dealing with the illegal migrant flows. The Times reported on Saturday that hundreds of more people had crossed the Channel on Friday in a bid to beat the coming bad weather, with small boats arriving on the shores of Dungeness, Folkestone, and Dover in the south-east English county of Kent. One eyewitness told the newspaper that he saw around 300 people arrive at Dungeness alone. The newspaper of record calculated that the latest arrivals, in their hundreds, will...
Ukraine has moved to reinforce its border with Alexander Lukashenko’s Belarus, in case it becomes the next victim of the “artificially created migrant crisis” afflicting Poland and Lithuania. “Last Sunday, the leaders of Ukraine’s security and defence agencies met in the city of Lutsk, not far from the border with Belarus, and invited ambassadors of Poland and Lithuania to join, because we need a collective response to the situation in Belarus,” said Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in comments in Brussels reported by Ukrinform on Monday. “[W]e have focused on the artificially created migrant crisis, but we cannot know what will happen tomorrow. Our three countries have to deal with the migrant crisis today, remembering that this is not the end of the story – Russia will do something new tomorrow,” Kuleba said. He noted that “So far we have not seen an influx of migrants to our country,” but stressed that this simply “proves once again that this migrant crisis is artificial, it is deliberately directed against Poland and Lithuania to provoke you, put pressure, and sow discord in...
Migrants queue to collect water during the distribution of humanitarian aid in a makeshift camp on the Belarusian-Polish border in the Grodno region, Belarus November 12, 2021.Leonid Scheglov | BelTA | Handout | via Reuters European foreign ministers met in Brussels on Monday to discuss possible sanctions against Belarus as the humanitarian crisis at its border deepens. Thousands of migrants, many from Syria, Yemen and Iraq, have been gathered at the border with EU member Poland in freezing temperatures for several weeks. Belarus has been accused of allowing the crisis to escalate in a bid to undermine EU security and in retaliation to the bloc's backing of the country's opposition, an allegation Minsk strenuously denies. Belarus' foreign ministry on Monday dismissed suggestions that it had engineered the migrant crisis as "absurd," claiming that border controls had been strengthened and state-owned airline Belavia was not carrying illegal migrants, according to Russian news agency RIA. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Sunday called on NATO to take "concrete steps" to mitigate the crisis, after dozens of migrants broke through border defenses to...
A KEY figure in Tony Blair’s former inner circle last night branded Labour’s 2004 “open door” immigration policy an act of “treachery” to Labour supporters. The Red Rose ally blamed the blow-back from angry voters for the 2010 election defeat, the Brexit vote and the collapse of Labour’s impregnable Red Wall. 3A key figure in Tony Blair’s former inner circle last night branded Labour’s 2004 'open door' immigration policy an act of 'treachery' to Labour supporters 3As mass immigration explodes into the dominating issue of British politics it threatens to eclipse even the sleaze row engulfing PM Boris JohnsonCredit: Getty They claimed Chancellor Gordon Brown triggered a “long tail” of catastrophic setbacks by embracing cheap labour as a key economic policy. DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria’s private Cham Wings Airlines on Saturday suspended flights between Damascus and the Belarus capital of Minsk because of the “critical circumstances” along the Belarus-Poland border where thousands of migrants have been trying to cross into the European Union. The company said most of its passengers to Minsk have been Syrian citizens and that it was difficult to differentiate between those traveling to Belarus as a final destination and others who are migrants. “Cham Wings Airlines decided to suspend its flights to Minsk Airport as of Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021,” the company said. Thousands of people from around the Middle East, many of them Iraqis and Syrians, have been trying to cross into the EU this year through a backdoor opened by non-EU member Belarus. In recent months, Belarus began offering easy tourist visas to Iraqis, Syrians and others from the Middle East and Africa. This meant they could now reach the edge of Europe on comfortable flights to Belarus, then try to sneak into Poland, Lithuania or Latvia, all EU members. Related Articles ...
The Poland-Belarus border crisis is escalating by the day—and while Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko’s tactic of weaponizing migrants has sparked outrage worldwide, some are also pointing fingers at the EU for its treatment of those migrants and its flawed border policy. “What Belarus is doing in terms of weaponizing migrants in this way is a terrible terrible thing, but I don’t know if the right response from Poland in terms of sending back migrants who have already crossed,” said The Daily Beast’s Noor Ibrahim. “That’s because we know what this dictatorship is. We know who Lukashenko is. And someone, at some point, has to step up. Because who are the people who are going to be falling through the cracks here? It’s these migrants.” The AFP’s Dave Clark argued that the ongoing crisis comes after years of the EU “shooting itself in the foot” when it comes to border policy. “It’s good that the European Union is standing up now. We’ve failed for a decade now to develop some kind of common border policy that could absorb what is...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said today Russia has nothing to do with the migrant crisis on the Belarus-Poland border. 'I want everyone to know. We have nothing to do with it,' he said in an interview with state broadcaster Vesti, after Poland and other Western critics accused Moscow of working with Minsk to send thousands of migrants to the EU border.  Putin said European leaders needed to talk to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko if they want to resolve the crisis, which has left hundreds of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, trapped on the border. 'As I understand it, Alexander Lukashenko and (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel are ready to talk to each other,' Putin said. 'I hope this will happen in the near future - this is most important.' Bruzgi, Belarus (CNN)Russia and Belarus flexed their military might for a third time this week near the Poland-Belarus border, where thousands of people are stranded in deplorable conditions, trapped at the center of an intensifying humanitarian and geopolitical crisis. Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko’s attempt to drive thousands of migrants into neighboring nations has drawn a rebuke from NATO as the border crisis raises the risk of a new European conflict. “The North Atlantic Council strongly condemns the continued instrumentalization of irregular migration artificially created by Belarus as part of hybrid actions targeted against Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia for political purposes,” the trans-Atlantic alliance said Friday in a joint statement. “These callous actions endanger the lives of vulnerable people.” Lukashenko’s regime has been arranging for thousands of people from Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries to fly to Belarus and then make their way by land to neighboring states, according to European officials, in an apparent bid to punish Western nations for supporting the Belarusian opposition. Those operations have led to a standoff between Belarusian and Polish border forces as both sides accuse the other of trying to provoke bloodshed between a NATO member and a Russian client state. “We will remain vigilant against the risk of further escalation and provocation by Belarus at its borders with Poland, Lithuania, and...
Outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to influence the Belarusian government to stop the migrant crisis unfolding along the Polish border. German Chancellor Merkel spoke to the Russian President on Wednesday on the phone about the migrant crisis along the Belarusian border. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that Chancellor Merkel told President Putin: “The instrumentalisation of migrants against the European Union by the Belarusian regime is inhumane and completely unacceptable.” Dr Merkel then asked Putin “to influence the regime in Minsk”, according to Kronen Zeitung. Nigel Farage has said that the scale of operations to pick up illegal aliens in the English Channel looks like a “vast, military operation”, going on to criticise the establishment press and television media for avoiding reporting on the migrant crisis. Officials confirmed to the BBC that in 48 hours, nearly 1,200 illegals arrived or were taken ashore, with 504 crossing in 16 boats on Tuesday and 695 arriving in 22 small vessels on Wednesday. The yearly total to date of those who have made the crossing illegally is now 22,344, almost three times that which crossed in the whole of 2020, when 8,404 migrants made the journey. Nearly 3,000 migrants have illegally entered British territory in the first ten days of November, according to The Telegraph, almost four times that which made the crossing in the whole of November 2020, when 791 landed, despite the onset of colder weather. The mounting figures come a week after the UK saw a new daily record of 853 illegals land on November 3rd. During his GB News nightly programme, Brexit leader Nigel Farage...
Belarusian tyrant Alexander Lukashenko has threatened to cut off gas to Europe after the EU said he would be slapped with new sanctions for 'weaponising' migrants at the Polish border.  Thousands of migrants have gathered at the Belarus-Poland border this week trying to force their way into the EU but have been blocked by 15,000 Polish soldiers.  As tensions mounted over the crisis, Vladimir Putin lent fresh support to Lukashenko today by sending two nuclear bombers to carry out drills in Belarusian airspace for the second day running.  European ministers on Wednesday stunned Brussels when they admitted they were considering a Trump-style wall to end the migrant crisis, as well as a raft of new sanctions to squeeze Lukashenko. Lukashenko turned the screw again today as he warned: 'If [the EU] impose additional sanctions on us ... we must respond.'  'We are warming Europe, and they are threatening us,' Lukashenko said, pointing out that Russia's Yamal-Europe passes through Belarus to Poland. The dictator asked: 'And what if we halt natural gas supplies?' The Yamal-Europe is one of three major Russian...
This is the moment Belarusian troops fired gunshots close to a terrified group of migrants at the Polish border, hours before the desperate refugees made fresh attempts to break through barbed wire fences and into the EU. Video captured by Polish guards shows people, including women and children, lined up along a border fence on the Belarusian side before the sound of a soldier cocking and firing his rifle is heard.  Amid screams from the migrants, two more soldiers can be seen kicking and hitting them before one drops to his knee and raises his gun at them. A Polish soldier can be heard calling to his squad-mate: 'Come, we have to step back!' Poland released the footage to rubbish claims by Belarus that it was Polish soldiers who had fired the shots, as Minsk tries to discredit its rivals in Warsaw as part of a 'hybrid attack' on the EU using migrants as a weapon. Amid a rush of migrant crossings overnight Belarus released footage of what it claimed was four Kurdish migrants beaten bloody by guards - though...
SHOCKING pictures show two Russian nuclear bombers patrolling the skies over Belarus amid a bitter border dispute. The government of Bulgaria has announced that it will be sending 350 troops to the border with Turkey, as the number of mostly Afghan migrants crossing illegally has tripled this year. Bulgaria boosted the number of troops at the border on Monday, with  Defence Minister Georgi Panayotov stating that they would help support police already patrolling the land border the country shares with Turkey. “From today, Monday, soldiers at the Bulgarian-Turkish border will support the border police. 350 people have been sent along with about 40 units of equipment,” Panayotov said according to a Kathimerini report. Between January and September of this year, Bulgarian authorities claim to have arrested at least 6,500 migrants, most of them Afghan nationals, who crossed into the EU country illegally. The figure is three times the number recorded in 2020. The surge of troops comes after Bulgaria had already committed between 400 and 750 troops to help guard the border with both Turkey and Greece in August of this year. Mexican cartels are taking advantage of the migrant crisis along the southwestern border to move fentanyl and methamphetamine-laced pills to all parts of the United States. Seizures of fentanyl have nearly doubled in 2021. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Mexican cartels perfected the mass production of fentanyl and fentanyl-laced pills using precursor chemicals typically sourced from China. The cartels move fentanyl and counterfeit opioid pills through a network of associates from the border to cities across the U.S. The manufacture and trafficking of fentanyl and related products are highly profitable. The pills appear nearly identical to Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin, Adderall, Xanax, and other controlled medicines. The pills, according to DEA, are more lethal than ever. In one laboratory test in September, 4 in 10 knockoffs contained a potentially lethal doses of fentanyl. As the Border Patrol focuses on caring and feeding thousands of migrants daily, the cartels are taking advantage of enforcement gaps. A redirection of CBP personnel from ports of entry to assist the Border Patrol has likely benefited the cartels as well. With reduced inspection capabilities...

White House press secretary Jen Psaki argued that President Joe Biden did take a border trip - pointing to a 2008 campaign drive-by - while also saying the president doesn't need a 'photo-op' to understand the migrant crisis during Friday's briefing.  Psaki was being prodded by Fox News Channel's Peter Doocy about a claim Biden made at Thursday night's CNN town hall - that he had 'been there before' and that he knew it 'well.'   'Well, Peter, as you may have seen, there's been reporting that he did drive through the border when he was on the campaign trail in 2008,' Psaki said. MISSION, Texas – The crisis at the southern border, which has seen hundreds of thousands of migrants encountered at the border in recent months and has overwhelmed Border Patrol agents while causing a massive political headache for the Biden administration, shows little sign of slowing down -- amid concerns that there are further migrant groups on their way. In a night time tour of the border near Mission, Texas, Fox News saw groups of migrants coming across, seeking entry into the U.S. Predominantly groups of migrant families, they were pointed in the direction of nearby processing areas. Border Patrol agents told Fox News that migrant family units, who were unlikely to be removed under Title 42 public health protections (only 19% of family units were removed under Title 42 in August) and instead would likely be processed and released into the interior -- potentially at a nearby bus...
THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) – Greece will increase the number of border guards on the country’s border with Turkey, fearing a spike in illegal migration linked to the crisis in Afghanistan, officials said Monday. An additional 250 officers will join the 1,500-strong border force over several months, with the number rising from around 1,000 early last year. About 800 extra border guard personnel will also be hired to staff airports and regions close to the Greek-Turkish border. The increase was spurred in part by the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, according to authorities. Greece has toughened its migration policy and border policing over the last two years, extending a wall along its land border with Turkey and installing a high-tech surveillance network to try and deter asylum-seekers from making the crossing. ‘Over 95 Per Cent’ of ‘Afghans’ in Greece ‘Arrive Without Documents’: Ambassador https://t.co/t48aAUL2yL — Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) September 27, 2021 Greece has denied mounting allegations by human rights groups that migrants caught after crossing into Greece are being summarily deported without being allowed to claim asylum. A group of Republican governors convened at the southern border on Wednesday to demand President Joe Biden more directly address the migration crisis – including by finishing the wall. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who was flanked by nine other GOP state leaders, said the president has refused to meet with them over this issue and lamented he has still not visited the border the U.S. shares with Mexico. 'This is one of, if not the most urgent matter that we're facing,' Abbott said. A group of 25 GOP governors sent a letter to Biden 16 days ago demanding a meeting with the president, but have not yet heard back from the White House. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said during the press conference on Wednesday: 'The situation here is certainly outrageous… It's a tragedy. And I can tell you the border situation is just as out of control in Arizona.' Abbott, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts all spoke at the press briefing in Texas. Also present were Governors Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, Mike...
Failure by the Biden administration to adequately address the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border could result in far greater numbers of people trying to enter the U.S., an anti-corruption activist in Guatemala is warning, according to a report. "You will have 1 million people at the border," activist Manfredo Marroquin, who met with Vice President Kamala Harris when she visited Central America earlier this year, told the Los Angeles Times in a story published Wednesday. To get a sense of what that would mean, the recent incident that strained local resources in Del Rio, Texas, after large groups of people gathered under a bridge, involved about 15,000 migrants. Marroquin argued that the "root causes" of migration, which Harris has pledged to tackle in her role as the Biden administration’s manager of the U.S. response to the migrant crisis, have only worsened since Harris’ June visit, according to the report. MEXICO SAYS IT CAN'T HELP US WITH MIGRANTS FOREVER, MUST GET TO ROOT OF PROBLEM IN CENTRAL AMERICA He called for greater engagement by the U.S. to address the problem, the...
It's the latest disastrous episode in a growing crisis that has seen well over 1 million migrants flood into the country since January in expectation of lenient treatment from the Biden administration. Rather than getting tough on illegal immigration, the administration has responded by releasing tens of thousands of migrants directly into the U.S., many presumably without court dates. The federal government's ineptitude has resulted in state and local entities stepping up to defend the border themselves. Yet, despite obvious evidence to the contrary, Obama claimed that America is in good hands under his former vice president's leadership. "As big-hearted as he is, nobody understands that better than Joe Biden," he argued. "And the question is now: Are we gonna get serious about dealing with this problem in a systemic way, as opposed to these one-offs where we're constantly reacting to emergencies? And I think that that's something that every American should wanna put an end to."
Former President Barack Obama said the migrant crisis playing out on the southern border is “heartbreaking” and declared the immigration system to be “dysfunctional” during an interview with ABC News that aired Tuesday. Over 14,000 migrants, mostly Haitians, crossed the border earlier in September and set up camp under the International Bridge in Del Rio, Texas, amid a continued surge in crossings under President Joe Biden’s administration. Biden faced backlash after the administration began deporting some of the migrants, though later it was determined that many have been allowed to remain in the U.S. for the time being. Obama spoke to “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts about the former vice president’s response and he suggested the country is now at a crossroads on whether real change will be enacted. “As big-hearted as he is, nobody understands that better than Joe Biden,” Obama said. “And the question is now: Are we gonna get serious about dealing with this problem in a systemic way, as opposed to these one-offs where we’re constantly reacting to emergencies? And I think that that’s something...
Former President Obama called for comprehensive immigration reform to fix a "dysfunctional" system as the Biden administration grapples with what he called a "heartbreaking" migrant crisis at the southern border.  Obama, during an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" that aired Tuesday, said reform to the U.S. immigration system is "something that is long overdue." He added that immigration is a "tough" issue because Americans want to be compassionate but that the U.S. having open borders is  an "unsustainable" idea. Obama's comments come after more than 14,000 Haitian migrants camped under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after a surge in border crossings.  Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas admitted Sunday that the vast majority of Haitian migrants who crossed the southern U.S. border in recent weeks have already been released into the United States and it is possible that more will follow them. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday” that the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, which most recently created a magnet for Haitian migrants, was “nothing new.” Anchor Chris Wallace said, “Hasn’t this administration created a magnet? Haven’t you given Haitians and a million more immigrants will you have an encounter with since Joe Biden came into office? Haven’t you given them a reason to believe there’s a reasonable chance if they come into this country, they will end up being released into the country and have months or perhaps years to stay here?” Mayorkas said, “Chris, this is nothing new. We’ve seen this type of irregular migration many, many times throughout the years. I don’t know if  Governor Abbott said the same thing in 2019 when there were more than a million people encountered at the southern border.” Wallace said, “It has gotten worse. The statistics of your own department show that the flood of people coming illegally across the border has gotten worse under the Biden demonstration.” Mayorkas said, “I wouldn’t call it...

Angela Merkel is stepping down as German Chancellor today after 16 years in power, ending a term that has redefined not just the country but also the political make-up of Europe and the continent's relations with the rest of the world.  The 67-year-old former scientist will be remembered as Germany's first female Chancellor and its second-longest serving, having survived four American Presidents and five British Prime Ministers - her first being George W Bush and Tony Blair. Her departure marks the end of an era for Germany which saw the country establish itself as the de-facto leader of Europe, cement its status as an economic super-power, and wield considerable influence on the global stage. During that time, Merkel has steered Germany through the 2007 recession and subsequent Greek debt crisis, the 2016 Berlin terror attack, Brexit, Trump's presidency and Covid - winning widespread praise for her pragmatism and competence, despite the EU hamstringing her vaccine drive. But her legacy also bears the stain of the 2015 migrant crisis - during which she threw open Europe's doors to millions of refugees...
DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — Amistad — Spanish for friendship — binds the sister cities of Del Rio, Texas, and Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. Each year, the border communities that sit across the Rio Grande from one another come together to celebrate that bond during the Fiesta de la Amistad. Leaders from both sides of the border meet at the festival and share abrazos, or hugs, to commemorate their common history and an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico to build the Amistad Dam and Reservoir in the 1960s. The relationship shows in many ways, with workers and families typically going back-and-forth between Acuña and Del Rio daily. But that traffic was disrupted for more than a week by the shutdown of the bridge that connects them and serves as a conduit for commerce, culture and community. Officials closed the crossing on Sept. 17 after an encampment made up of mostly Haitian migrants formed around the span. The camp was completely cleared of migrants on Friday, and U.S. authorities announced the bridge would partially reopen to passenger traffic late Saturday afternoon...
Vice President Kamala Harris is facing new doubts about the Biden administration's immigration policies as Haitian migrants flood the southern border. Harris publicly spoke about the situation in Del Rio, Texas, where an estimated 15,000 migrants, mostly Haitian nationals, have been camped out under the international bridge between Texas and Mexico, during a Tuesday event in Washington, D.C. HAITIAN MIGRANTS REVOLT IN CUSTODY AND SEIZE CONTROL OF PRIVATELY CONTRACTED BUS "What I saw depicted about those individuals on horseback treating human beings the way they were, was horrible," Harris said when asked about images and videos showing Customs and Border Protection agents rounding up migrants on horseback. "I fully support what is happening right now, which is a thorough investigation into exactly what is going on there, but human beings should never be treated that way, and I'm deeply troubled about it." Harris said she planned to speak with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about the investigation and border situation Tuesday, but that conversation appears not to have happened by press time. (CNN)Four people have died on Poland's border with Belarus in recent days, amid accusations that the Belarusian government is funneling migrants to the European Union's eastern border in retaliation over western sanctions. Three people were found dead on the Polish side of the border after suffering from hypothermia, Polish authorities said. A fourth person was found dead in Belarus, one meter from the border, Belarusian state agency Belta reported.A growing number of migrants have been illegally crossing Poland's border from Belarus in recent weeks. In August alone, 3,000 people -- many from Afghanistan and Iraq -- attempted to enter Poland illegally, according to the Polish interior ministry. In a press conference Monday, Poland's Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Mariusz Kamiński said one of the victims found Sunday was an Iraqi citizen who died near the Lithuanian border in Frącki, Poland.Kamiński said the Iraqi citizen and the two other victims found in Poland were forced to the Polish border by Belarusian border guards, before Polish border authorities told them their crossing was illegal and there was no way through.Belarus floods the...
President Biden on Tuesday pledged to get the situation at the border "under control" as his administration faces a fresh border crisis in Del Rio, where more than 10,000 migrants have descended in recent days. "We will get it under control," Biden said in response to a question about the border, after speaking at the United Nations General Assembly. MAYORKAS VISITS BORDER, ISSUES STERN WARNING TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS: ‘YOUR JOURNEY WILL NOT SUCCEED’  He was then asked if his administration has it under control or will get it under control. "We will get it under control," he repeated. Biden’s administration has been facing a surge in migration that has overwhelmed officials and capacity since taking office. In August there were more than 208,000 migrant encounters, the second month in a row where encounters have been above 200,000. While the administration has been repeating its claim that the border is not open, and noting that a significant number of encounters result in a Title 42 expulsion, it has been facing accusations from Republicans of encouraging mass migration by rolling back Trump-era...
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) appeared on Fox News Monday afternoon to discuss the ongoing crisis at the southern border. There has been a surge in the number of migrants seeking entry into the United States in 2021, and recently at least 10,000 Haitian migrants are camping out under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas. The situation has generated a fair share of chaotic, if not cruel, scenes, with one video showing a border patrol agent on horseback hectoring Haitians who’d crossed the Rio Grande, “This is why your country’s shit!” Jordan called on the President Joe Biden and his de facto border czar Vice President Kamala Harris to address the situation. “The American people are fed up with this,” he told Sandra Smith. “They’d like leadership from the White House, from President Biden, from Vice President Harris. But they’re certainly not seeing it. And it’s because the White House is not willing to embrace the policies that work.” Jordan then claimed the Biden administration is allowing the crisis to happen on purpose. “The only conclusion any rational person can reach...
