(CNN)After last year's "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Musical" -- a dual threat as both a critical disaster and a ratings flop -- NBC returned to more fertile territory with its latest holiday presentation, "Annie Live!" Incorporating a live audience, the show more closely approximated the energy of a theatrical experience, with its main flaw stemming from trying too hard to please.Having a crowd actually watch the show helped overcome one of the raps on this format over the last decade, mounting some memorable shows but struggling to capture the unique qualities of an in-person setting. On the downside, the audience (one suspects with a degree of coaching) sounded a bit too appreciative and enthusiastic, applauding during numbers and carrying on as if this "Annie" was frankly a better show than it is or was. It's also worth noting the first priority remains presenting these musicals as a TV show, allowing cameras to swoop in and around the performers to provide an up-close view. By that measure, even the best seat in the house was occasionally obstructed so the folks at home...
Getty Three key NFL studs are playing a major role in the 2022 New York Jets draft position. Sometimes in life, it isn’t about being right, it’s about being lucky. In 2019, the New York Jets decided to trade away arguably their best player in safety Jamal Adams right before training camp in a blockbuster deal to the Seattle Seahawks. They received a pair of future first-rounders, in 2021 and 2022 respectively, and a third-rounder in 2021. In any world that is a fantastic haul, especially when you consider the devalued position of the safety position as it correlates to success in the NFL. Although not even the Jets could have known at the time how good this deal really was. ALL the latest Jets news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Jets newsletter here! Join Heavy on Jets! Over the last several months, we have been dedicating some time and energy in the Daily Kos/Civiqs survey to trying to figure out why President Joe Biden's approval ratings are nearly 10 points underwater. The first of these Civiqs surveys tested the popularity of many policies Biden had already implemented by August, such as the vaccine rollout and passing pandemic relief. The survey found that 10 of the 12 policies were quite popular and polled above water. So enacting popular policies doesn't necessarily ensure a president will be popular these days. The second survey in October tried to pinpoint which issues voters were most dissatisfied with and found that economic issues such as gas prices, the cost of household goods, and the price of health care were among the biggest sticking points. A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll added some notable data points to the picture: Biden is 16 points underwater on his handling of the economy: 39% approve/55% disapprove. Just 29% of Americans described the nation's economy in positive terms (excellent/good) while 70% viewed it negatively (not so good/poor). Only 35% of...

A devastating new ad from the Lincoln Project outlines the stark difference between former President Donald Trump's multiple failed attempts to pass an infrastructure bill during his term and President Joe Biden's newly-minted success in carrying the legislation over the finish line. In the one-minute video, the Lincoln Project compiled clips of Trump's empty promises on infrastructure. Repeatedly, the former president promised to deliver a package to improve America's infrastructure, but that promise never came to fruition. Since he was elected back in 2016, Trump and his administration promised to deliver a $1 trillion infrastructure package, but to no avail. Although the proposed bill gained bipartisan support back in 2019, the former president was still unable to get the proposal passed due to cost concerns raised by his own political party. Per ABC News: "Trump and Democratic congressional leaders temporarily agreed to work toward a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, 'would be big and bold.' But that disintegrated as House Republicans raised concerns about cost, Trump declared a new...

more   In the high-profile trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, accused of intentional homicide after killing two and wounding one during an August 25, 2020 riot in Kenosha, Judge Bruce Schroeder began Monday by dismissing a weapons charge against the 18-year-old defendant. Count six of the complaint, possession of a dangerous weapon by a minor, was dropped before closing arguments began. That was a lesser charge in the complaint – a misdemeanor punishable by up to nine months in prison. The law in Wisconsin, as interpreted by Schroeder, does not prevent a minor from openly carrying a rifle in Wisconsin. That law only applies to handguns and shorter-barreled weapons. “Count six is no longer part of your consideration,” Schroeder told the jury after dismissing the charge. “That was the firearm charge. So that won’t be something you’ll need to address. You’ll need to address only the first five counts.” Before the closing arguments began, five charges against Rittenhouse remained. Those charges included one count of first degree reckless homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, one count of first-degree intentional...
On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “The Story,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) stated that consideration of shutting down the Line 5 pipeline is “a very complicated issue.” And that there have been pipeline spills and strikes and that there are other ways energy can be delivered. Host Martha MacCallum asked, “What is your stance on even the consideration or the study of potentially not keeping that Line 5 running and functioning in the new plan that was scheduled for it?” Dingell responded, “So, like all things that we talk about, they’re very complicated. … It’s a very complicated issue. We also don’t want to see any kind of oil pipeline spill into the Great Lakes, which is 20% of the freshwater in the world. There have been several pipeline strikes. There are alternatives about how that energy will be delivered. It’s complicated, not talking points.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett

The U.S. on Monday lifted a pandemic travel ban on visitors from 33 countries and airline executives have said bookings for international trips have jumped. Deliveries of wide-body jets, which are often used for international flights, have been suspended for much of the past year after Boeing disclosed a series of manufacturing flaws and took extra time to inspect its jets. American Airlines and United Airlines are among the carriers with outstanding orders of the Dreamliner. Both carriers are aiming to expand international flying next year, eager to make up for lost ground from two years of weak demand for foreign travel due to the pandemic and a host of travel restrictions. LONDON (AP) — Matej Vydra pounced late to stun sloppy Chelsea and give Burnley a 1-1 draw in the English Premier League on Saturday. Czech Republic forward Vydra came off the bench to convert the Clarets’ only chance at Stamford Bridge, canceling out Kai Havertz’s 33rd-minute effort that had seemingly put the league leader on course for a fifth-straight top-flight win. Chelsea had controlled the match for 75 minutes only for a short lapse in concentration and intensity to cost them two points. Thomas Tuchel’s team will still see out the weekend atop the Premier League, but Liverpool will have the chance to cut the lead to one point with a victory at West Ham on Sunday. Chelsea tore into Burnley without delay from the start. Callum Hudson-Odoi saw a low drive parried by Nick Pope and could only blaze the rebound wide. Reece James had a shot blocked, then Andreas Christensen headed wide from one corner and Antonio Rudiger over the bar from another. Burnley could hardly cope with that opening nine-minute onslaught but somehow held out without conceding...

NANTUCKET (CBS) — A hospital in Nantucket experienced a baby boom during the Nor’easter. The Nantucket Cottage Hospital said they delivered five newborns as the storm blew through the area, including three that were unplanned. Beverly Turney, Nurse Manager at NCH for the Labor, Delivery Recovery and Postpartum Department, said there may been a correlation between the weather conditions and the amount of babies delivered. “It used to be an old wives’ tale that storms cause babies to be delivered, but over the years we’ve seen that when barometric pressure drops, waters break prematurely and babies are delivered,” said Turney. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nantucket Cottage Hospital (@ackhospital) According to Turney, there were no deliveries the previous week. This milestone is just the start, as the U.S. has vowed to donate over 1 billion COVID-19 vaccines to various countries around the world. “President [Joe] Biden has pledged that the U.S. will be the world’s arsenal of vaccines, and USAID continues to play a pivotal role in fulfilling the ambitious goal of vaccinating 70 percent of the eligible global population by next year,” Power said. “USAID, in coordination with the White House, other U.S. Government departments and agencies, and COVAX, the global vaccine access initiative, is helping get safe and effective shots in arms around the world.” Power noted the “work is far from over” and touted the plan to bring more vaccines to low-and lower-middle-income countries. “These vaccines will help save lives, protect livelihoods, and heal economies currently battered by this pandemic. But they are not the only tool...

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt testified at a trial Friday, describing how his enthusiastic pursuit of big contributions from a Rudy Giuliani associate he met at a Trump hotel during his 2018 run for governor ended with a $10,000 check he had to reject. Adam Laxalt, 43, now a 2022 candidate for U.S. Senate, was repeatedly shown text messages he exchanged with Florida businessman Lev Parnas as he followed up with what he thought was a well connected man who could possibly raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for his campaign. Parnas and Andrey Kukushkin are facing charges that they conspired to use over $100,000 of a $1 million investment from a Russian financier to fund politicians they thought could advance their business interests, including in an energy company and in the fledgling legal marijuana industry in the West. Laxalt is considered a prize witness in the prosecution of Parnas and Kukushkin at a trial where prosecutors expect they might rest late Monday or early Tuesday, less than a week after they began. An ally...
A TikTok star's story about a suspicious Uber Eats delivery driver who showed up at her home at one in the morning has earned over nine million views. Bobbie Prestes, 25, says that over the summer, she had a rare conversation with an Uber Eats driver who dropped off her order while she and her husband were sitting outside. She didn't think much of it until this week, when the same delivery person showed up with a bag of Taco Bell after midnight — even though they didn't order any food. What's more, the driver clearly remembered them and made some odd comments about their pool — so now Bobbie and her husband have installed security cameras and are demanding an explanation from Uber Eats. Viral: Bobbie Prestes, 25, shared her story on TikTok and has earned nine million views. She said she struck up a rare conversation with an Uber Eats driver in August Odd: This week, the same driver showed up at 1 a.m. with food from Taco Bell that they didn't order and made some suspicious comments about...
Tarek El Moussa and Heather Rae Young obtain marriage license Investing myths you shouldnt fall for © Provided by Sports Illustrated As he repeatedly kneeled down, a lot of money changed hands. 1. The line in Thursday’s Eagles-Bucs game was 7 or 6.5 points depending on where and when you bet the game. The final score was 28–22 thanks to 1) Philly converting a two-point conversion after scoring with 5:54 remaining and 2) the Bucs running out the clock at the end of the game. However, this is not the "Bad Beat" I’m referring to in the headline above. The one I’m going to explain is way worse. The over/under on Brady’s total rushing yards for the game was 1.5. With 2:27 left, the GOAT ran a QB sneak for three yards to the Eagles' 6-yard line for a first down. Philly had no timeouts at that point, so the Bucs ran the clock down to the two-minute warning and then Brady took three knees. The NFL counts kneel-downs as rush attempts, so this is what ended up happening. I...

Yep. It’s true, AT&T is behind One America News, the “news” network that is crazier than Fox News. Court documents revealed by Reuters show how much AT&T is responsible for OAN. Just how responsible? Without AT&T, the conspiracy-spreading outlet that trafficks in election conspiracy and horse de-wormer miracle cures would not exist. OAN is an important arm of the Donald J. Trump misinformation campaign and has been since he was president. It’s a conspiracy outlet that has been pushing dangerous lies for months — dangerous for democracy and dangerous to humans drawn in by promises of miracle cures and Covid misinformation. And we have AT&T to thank for that. Enjoy the cartoon, and please join me over on Patreon — where you can support my work, download prints and find exclusive videos! Getty DeSean Jackson and Robert Woods before the Rams took on the Buccaneers in their September 26 game. DeSean Jackson and Robert Woods of the Los Angeles Rams have played in 165 and 121 NFL games, respectively. The wide receivers have additionally scored a combined 90 touchdowns. But the New York Giants and their fans probably recall two touchdowns they delivered…or would rather forget. Both Ram targets are heading back to the place where they delivered two personal highlights that became revered in NFL lore, and is likely a sore subject for the G-Men to this day. Here’s a trip down memory lane.‘D-Jax’s’ Walk-Off Punt Return The date: December 19, 2010. The game was tied 31-31 with less than 1:30 left in the game. The Philadelphia Eagles, though, were once down 31-10 before storming back. Yet, all signs indicated this game would head for overtime this late in the game. The Giants decided to punt the ball away. History followed afterward. Never before has an NFL game witnessed a punt return become the...
A dog crate where a 13-year-old New Mexico was forced to sleep and where he died in 2018 has been put on display by prosecutors, as his brother is sentenced over his torture and killing. Jeremiah Valencia was beaten within an inch of his life by his mother's boyfriend, Thomas Ferguson, who killed himself in Santa Fe County jail in 2018 while awaiting trial. But prosecutors said on Tuesday that it was the boy's brother Jordan Nuñez, 23, delivered the final blow that killed him at the family home in Nambé, north of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Prosecutors also showed a sledgehammer which was used to beat Valencia.  'Jeremiah became the target of those two men,' said District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, according to the Albequerque Journal. 'Basically, anything that could be used to hurt a 13-year-old boy was used on Jeremiah.' Jordan Nuñez, 23 (pictured) faces 14 to 24 years for his role in the 2017 killing after he pled guilty last March to recklessly permitting child abuse resulting in death and two counts of tampering with evidence Although...
