Wind turbines and solar panels in Kayseri, Turkey.temizyurek | E+ | Getty Images The world is set to add nearly 290 gigawatts of renewable power capacity this year, according to the International Energy Agency, with the Paris-based organization expecting 2021 to "set a fresh all-time record for new installations." Published on Wednesday, the IEA's Renewables Market Report forecasts that the planet's renewable electricity capacity will jump to more than 4,800 GW by the year 2026, an increase of over 60% compared to levels in 2020. Capacity refers to the maximum amount of energy that installations can produce, not what they're necessarily generating. China is set to be the main driver of renewable capacity growth over the coming years, according to the IEA, with Europe, the U.S. and India following on behind. Looking at the bigger picture, the IEA said renewables were expected to account for "almost 95% of the increase in global power capacity through 2026." "We have revised up our forecast from a year earlier," the report said, "as stronger policy support and ambitious climate targets announced for COP26...
Customers wait in line to enter Frontier Fiesta on Feb. 17, 2021, in Houston. A winter storm caused rolling blackouts throughout Houston and the surrounding areas. by Delilah Alvarado This story was originally published at Prism. In February, severe winter storms sweeping across the U.S. caused an extreme power crisis in Texas. People across the state went without power for an average of two days, and some lost access to fresh water for even longer and had to boil the water that was available. Now as the temperature lowers and the winter months approach, Texans who are still feeling the effects of the last blackout are anxiously waiting to see if the weather could cause a repeat of February’s disaster. Efforts have been underway to reform the state’s power grid since the last major storm, but experts say the grid is still vulnerable and could create some future problems. The worst-case scenario considered—fossil fuel outages and very high demand for power—does not capture the amount of power lost in February, along with a lack of winterization for the gas sector, where half of the outages came from. The...
AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Regulators of Texas’ oil and gas industry that buckled during February’s deadly freeze moved Tuesday, Nov. 30 toward making some producers more prepared for cold weather, but not in time for this winter as the nation’s power grid monitor warned the state is still at risk of blackouts. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is guaranteeing the lights will stay on this winter. HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – It may be weeks until residents of the Trafalgar Towers condo building will have power back in their units, according to building contractors. “You’ve lived here for 17 years you must miss your home,” asked CBS4’s Austin Carter. Residents showed CBS4 cameras some of that damage. That fire cut power to the floor. And as a contractor was making some repairs on the main electrical box, the whole thing shorted. That knocked out the power to the entire building. Later, the city’s fire marshal and building inspectors came in and an emergency generator was supplied. BOSTON (CBS) — The New England Patriots have won another football game. That’s becoming a bit of a theme. From 2-4 and looking somewhat hopeless, to 8-4 and fighting for the No. 1 seed in the conference, things have changed significantly in New England over the past six weeks. As such, they’ve steadily climbed up power rankings across the internet, rising from the bottom third of the league. Here’s where they stand after their Week 12 win over the Titans, who had been the top seed in the AFC prior to that loss. NFL.com: 5th The Patriots moved up a spot to fifth, behind only the Chiefs (fourth) among AFC teams. That rise, though, comes with a caveat. “The Pats have announced themselves as a player in the AFC, but a challenging three-game stretch that includes two matchups against the Bills will give us a greater understanding of where this team stands,” Dan Hanzus wrote. The Ringer: 4th “It was striking that despite the turnover from the past few seasons, and despite taking Brady out of the equation, the Patriots...
Each week of the NFL season, The Baltimore Sun will rank all 32 NFL teams. The rankings will take into account not just weekly performance, but how well each team measures up as Super Bowl contenders, regardless of win-loss record. Here are the rankings after Week 12: The top contenders 1. Arizona Cardinals (9-2; No. 1 last week) 2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3; No. 2) 3. Green Bay Packers (9-3; No. 3) 4. The Buccaneers, Packers and Patriots earned the most impressive wins of the weekend, further establishing themselves as betting favorites to reach the Super Bowl. Tampa Bay rallied to beat the Colts, 38-31, with Leonard Fournette outshining fellow running back Jonathan Taylor by scoring four total touchdowns. Tom Brady led four second-half touchdown drives, including a game-winning eight-play, 75-yard march with 3:29 left,...
The Chinese government credited recent energy “policy measures,” including increased coal production, for the increased manufacturing activity boosting its economy. “In November, power shortages eased and prices of some raw materials dropped significantly,” said Zhao Qinghe, a senior statistician at China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), according to CNN. A manufacturing index that measures factory production increased to 50.1, marking the first time it surpassed 50 in three months and its first increase since March, NBS data showed, CNN reported. The increase suggests that China has overcome the power crunch caused by low energy supply and extreme weather. The Asian superpower’s government turned to coal production in October, ordering mines to churn out as much as possible. As a result, China set a record for coal production in November, according to CNN. (CBS4) – The Denver Broncos can pat themselves on the back just a little bit more heading toward Sunday’s matchup against the Kansas City Chefs. Three major website are moving up the Broncos in NFL power rankings after defeating the Los Angeles Charges during the Week 12 bout at home. The View was unanimously displeased with the revelations about Chris Cuomo’s conduct on behalf of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, though they debated whether the CNN anchor should be taken off the network over his brother’s scandals. Chris Cuomo is facing an internal review at CNN following the release of new exhibits and transcripts from the investigation into his brother. The evidence shows how Chris strategically assisted Andrew amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment, and the CNN host also used journalistic sources to dig up information on Andrew’s accusers. As The View dissected the news, Joy Behar started things off by predicting Chris Cuomo is “in a little bit of trouble” now. Jane Coaston, who was guest-hosting on Tuesday, took things up a notch as she told Behar “I think he’s in a lot of trouble.” “If you were reporting about this on someone else, you would be saying that person should be fired,” Coaston added. Behar responded that “I’m not going to be judge and jury of the guy,” but she took a very disapproving view of Cuomo’s...
A federal judge has struck down one of President Joe Biden’s four COVID vaccine mandates, ruling that it violates federal law to force healthcare providers to fire doctors and nurses who object to the vaccination. One mandate down, three to go. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a mandate that any healthcare provider receiving money from its programs must demand COVID-19 vaccinations of its employees, and fire any healthcare workers who do not get a vaccination. CMS is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is led by Secretary Xavier Becerra. But Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt led a coalition of states to file a legal challenge to this vaccine mandate. On Monday, Judge Matthew Schelp of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri agreed with Schmidt and his fellow state attorneys general that Biden’s mandate is illegal. The judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking that mandate immediately. Government mandates come in all shapes and sizes. The Constitution gives some matters to the federal government and assigns other matters...
Puddles the mascot of the Oregon Ducks. (Photo by Tom Hauck/Getty Images) Michigan is finally king of the Big Ten, but as we head into conference championship week, there is still much to be decided in the NCAA conference power rankings. It finally happened. Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan team beat the Ohio State Buckeyes. It was one of the wildest games of the weekend, but it was hardly THE wildest. Auburn blew a lead to Alabama to keep the Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff. They likely make it even with a loss to Georgia next week. Oh, speaking of next week, we’ve moved past rivalry week and now we’re moving on to Championship Week. All of the Power 5 conferences will have their championship games this weekend. There are some major surprises. The ACC Championship Game doesn’t have Clemson playing in it for the first time in seven years. Oklahoma didn’t make the Big 12 championship game, and now their head coaching vacancy might be the most appealing in the country. More on that later. For now, let’s get...

Kyler Murray could crash the party should he return full strength after an ankle injury that’s kept him out a month, but as of now, the NFC representative in the Super Bowl could be determined by a rematch between Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Brady survived three interceptions a year ago in Green Bay as the Buccaneers beat the Packers 31-26, winning the right to face (and beat) the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl LV. Rodgers was 33 of 48 for 346 yards but couldn’t overcome a 28-10 deficit early in the third quarter, getting Green Bay as close as 28-23. BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union on Wednesday is set to unveil a multibillion-euro plan aimed at bolstering the 27-nation bloc’s worldwide infrastructure and influence. The program is expected to mobilize up to 300 billion euros ($341 billion) in public and private funds by 2027. Although the European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, does not present the project as an attempt to counter China’s massive infrastructure initiative seeking to connect Asia with Africa and Europe, the German ambassador to the EU said the so-called Global Gateway “has the potential to turn the EU into a more effective geopolitical player.” “For many partner countries, the offer of a rules-and-values-based cooperation at eye level will be an attractive alternative to the Chinese Belt and Road initiative,” Michael Clauß said. China’s program aims to develop markets and new trade routes connecting China with the rest of the world by weaving a network of ports, bridges and power plants that will yield diplomatic clout and global power. Asked whether the 27-nation EU is trying to counter China’s influence with its plan, commission chief spokesman...

The governments of four countries in September reached an agreement to pipe gas from Egypt, through Jordan and Syria, to ease the power crisis in Lebanon. At the time, Egypt's Petroleum Minister Tarek El-Molla said the plan, which is backed by the U.S., would be put into action at the "earliest opportunity," Reuters reported. Hochstein said there is still work to be done before the pipeline is ready, but said he is confident that the plan, as well as an effort to interconnect Jordan and Lebanon's power grids, will succeed. "Every week that goes by, I am more optimistic that we're going to...
Hong Kong (CNN Business)China's economy is finally getting some good news: Its big factories are staging a recovery as a power crunch that held back production starts to ease because of a big jump in coal supply. A government survey of manufacturing activity increased to 50.1 in November from 49.2 in October, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday. It was the first reading above 50 — indicating expansion rather than contraction — in three months. It was also the first time since March that the index increased over the prior month.Beijing on Tuesday attributed the improvement to "recent policy measures" that have strengthened energy supply and stabilized soaring costs. "In November, power shortages eased and prices of some raw materials dropped significantly," said Zhao Qinghe, senior statistician for NBS, in a statement.               moreby Mackubin Owens   It has been clear for some time that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seeks to displace the United States not only as a regional but also as a global hegemonic power. Indeed, we are now in the midst of a new “cold war,” not unlike its predecessor that pitted the United States against the Soviet Union. In the service of its goals, Beijing has pursued a coherent grand strategy. Although China seems to be effectively executing its grand strategy, its success is not foreordained. But countering it must be the strategic priority of the United States. “Strategy” describes the employment of limited means to achieve the goals of national policy. In general, strategy provides a conceptual link between national ends and scarce resources, both the transformation of those resources into means during peacetime and the application of those means during war. In the words of Edward Mead Earle: strategy is the art of controlling and utilizing the resources of a nation—or a coalition of nations—including its armed forces, to the end that its vital interests...
MONTREAL (AP) — Conor Garland scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period, Thatcher Demko had 33 saves and the Vancouver Canucks held on to beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 on Monday night. Elias Pettersson had a power-play goal to help Vancouver snap a four-game losing streak. “There’s a lot of adversity around our group,” Canucks coach Travis Green said. “We’ve talked about before the game, things are going tough, we’re going through adversity. It shows a lot about the players as individuals, it shows a lot about the team and how you respond.” “We talked about character and times like this reveal a lot about players and teams.” After winning three of nine games against the Canadiens in last season’s North Division, the Canucks picked up their first regulation win in Montreal since 2007. “It felt great,” Pettersson said about getting a win at Bell Centre. “They didn’t start their season that well either so both teams were fighting for points.” Ryan Poehling scored for the fourth time in 10 games, and Jake Allen had 40 saves for the...
BEIJING (AP) — China’s manufacturing activity rebounded in November as orders improved and power shortages eased, a survey showed Tuesday. An industry group and the national statistics agency said a monthly purchasing managers’ index rose to 50.1 from October’s 49.2 on a 100-point scale. The index spent the previous two months below 50, which shows activity decreasing. A measure of production rose 3.6 points to 52, indicating activity was recovering from power rationing imposed in major manufacturing areas in September to meet official energy efficiency targets. “Industrial activity rebounded this month thanks to easing disruptions from power shortages,” said Sheana Yue of Capital Economics in a report. Yue noted the recovery faces uncertainty due to the spread of the coronavirus’s omicron variant. She said manufacturers also face supply shortages but that was offset at least partly by falling prices for materials. A measure of new export orders rose 1.9 points to 48.5 while new orders overall improved by 0.6 points to 49.4, according to the federation and the National Bureau of Statistics. (CNN)Tropical cyclones in Asia could have double the destructive power by the end of the century, according to new research, as scientists say the human-made climate crisis is already making them stronger. Using data from nearly four decades from 1979 to 2016, researchers found that the destructive power of tropical cyclones had dramatically increased, with stronger landfalling cyclones lasting longer and tracking further inland.18 weather and climate disasters this year have killed over 500 people and cost over $100 billion in USThe study, by researchers at the Shenzhen Institute of Meteorological Innovation and the Chinese University of Hong Kong and published in Frontiers in Earth Science, said that tropical cyclones now last between two and nine hours longer and traveled an average of 100 km (62 miles) further inland than they did four decades ago.The study looked at cyclones over east and southeast Asia and found the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi and the southern China region were hardest hit between 1979 and 2016.Researchers also found that by the end of the century, the average landfall wind speed over Asian inland...

Brad Marchand scored the tying goal on a power play in the third period and set up David Pastrnak’s go-ahead score, helping the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night. Anton Blidh also scored for Boston, and Linus Ullmark made 36 saves. The Bruins won for the fifth time in seven games. Tanner Pearson and Conor Garland scored for Vancouver. Former Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak made 39 saves and remains winless (0-4-1) in his first season with the Canucks. The 36-year-old Halak signed as a free agent with them after playing three seasons with Boston. "He can help you win in a lot of ways," Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said of Marchand, who also dished out some big hits that sparked the team. "We saw it offensively and we’ve seen it on the penalty kill here for years. The physical part was good." The Pittsburgh Steelers have been the league’s model franchise for better than 50 years. Now, though, it’s time to realize and correct some errors. It’s time the Pittsburgh Steelers accept reality. They’re done. Pittsburgh should have started looking to the future this past offseason. Despite starting 11-0 last year, the Steelers got poor quarterback play from Ben Roethlisberger and an offense hampered by his dwindling abilities. The end result was 12-4 and an embarrassing Wild Card loss to the Cleveland Browns. Now, after being blown out 41-10 to finish off a season sweep to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Steelers must give up their delusions. In March, Roethlisberger should have been released. The Steelers could have put out a flowery statement before aggressively trying to draft his replacement. As it happened, general manager Kevin Colbert could have moved up to select Justin Fields or Mac Jones. Instead, the Steelers took a running back in Najee Harris. Through 10 starts this year, Roethlisberger has thrown for 2,502 yards (6.6 YPA) with 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. There’s no threat of a deep...
CHICAGO (AP) — Timo Meier scored on a deflection and added an empty-net goal, James Reimer earned his 42nd career shutout, and the San Jose Sharks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-0 on Sunday night. The Sharks won for the third time in four starts, all with Reimer in goal. He was only occasionally challenged en route to his first shutout in 22 months, stopping 29 shots. The loss was the third in five games for Chicago, and dropped the Blackhawks to 6-3-0 since Derek King took over as head coach. Meier was between Chicago goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and a defenseman when he tipped the shot of Rudolfs Balcers past Fleury 13:39 into the second period, giving San Jose the lead. The goal capped a brief flurry of back-and-forth play in which Chicago defenseman Seth Jones narrowly missed converting on a 2-on-1 break. Aside from Jones’ misfire, the closest the Blackhawks came to scoring was on a shot by defenseman Jake McCabe. On the shot, Reimer stretched and gloved with 27 seconds left in the middle period. Meier added an...
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — FirstEnergy Corp. has applied to build five solar energy projects throughout its West Virginia service territory. by Cirien Saadeh This story was originally published at Prism. Lillian Hang works at the Hang Family Farm in Vermillion Township, Minnesota, alongside her children, siblings, and parents, growing a mix of vegetables and herbs local to the area and those the family brought with them 30 years ago when they moved to the U.S. from Southeast Asia. From carrots, onions, and potatoes to lemongrass, Thai basil, mustard greens, and bitter melons, the Hangs and other Hmong American farm families who’ve come to Minnesota as immigrants from Thailand, Laos, and other areas of Southeast Asia have helped reshape the state’s agriculture and contributed significantly to the growth of local farmers markets over the last 30 years. And they’re continuing to innovate, growing new crops that might not be expected to thrive in Minnesota’s notoriously frigid climate. “Mom and Dad are testing with sweet potatoes … Japanese sweet potatoes, the purple sweet potatoes, as well as these cream-colored sweet potatoes. For the longest time, people said, ‘You cannot grow those in Minnesota. It’s too cold,’” said Hang. But even...
RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia’s cities could gain political power under a new state policy that changes how prisoners are counted for redistricting political boundaries. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the policy counts inmates at their last known address instead of the prison’s location. The change could boost representation in cities such as Norfolk and Richmond. Declines are expected in the rural areas where many  prisons are located. The state’s congressional and legislative districts are redrawn every 10 years based off of U.S. Census numbers. Supporters of the new policy say counting inmates at their prison addresses diminishes the sway of communities where inmates are from. Opponents say the policy politically weakens rural areas as well as Republican voting strength in the state. Copyright © 2021 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. About 20 members of the far-right Proud Boys group marched on the streets of Long Island to protest against Small Business Saturday, irritating local elected officials and terrorizing shoppers.   The march happened in the Village of Rockville Centre, on the South Shore in Nassau County, as members of the group were taped walking down Sunrise Highway while waving giant American and Don't Tread on Me flags.  Most of them were also filmed making hand gestures for white power, while loud music was playing from the back of a yellow pickup truck that had a 'Law and Order' banner on display on its roof.  Wearing bandanas over their faces in order to remain unidentifiable, some members of the group even barged into local shops, shouting the militia group's slogans and handing out flyers promoting their 12 principles, including 'minimal government,' 'anti-racism,' 'anti-racial guilt,' 'venerate the housewife' and 'reinstate the spirit of Western chauvinism.'  Rockville Centre police monitored the march on the street, steering the crowd away from the demonstrators and controlling traffic. LONDON (AP) — Tens of thousands of people in Scotland and northern England remained without power Sunday after a storm brought sleet, subzero temperatures and disruptions across much of the U.K. Icy gusts caused power cuts around the border between Scotland and England, with Northern Powergrid saying it recorded 1,100 instances of damage requiring significant repairs. It said it was trying to restore service to 40,000 customers, while the SP Energy Networks said 21,000 customers remained without power Sunday. “The storm was well forecasted and despite being prepared, Storm Arwen resulted in damage of a scale and intensity not seen for 15 years,” said Rod Gardner, Northern Powergrid’s major incident manager. The power cuts came as forecasters issued ice warnings and said the coldest night of the season would hit parts of the U.K. later Sunday, with snowfall expected across the country and temperatures dropping to as low as -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of Scotland and northern England. Some train routes, including one between the cities of Edinburgh and Newcastle, were cancelled due to...
The Bottom Line: What is a LS 500? The LS 500 is a full size luxury sedan serving as the flagship model of Lexus, the luxury car and SUV division of Toyota. The 2021 Lexus LS 500h is available in a single trim level, and it’s powered by a 3.5L liter V6 gasoline engine paired with two electric motors. Combined system output is 354 horsepower. A unique transmission combines a traditional four speed automatic, and a CVT continuously variable automatic transmission, into a single unit.   The LS 500h, the “h” referring to hybrid, uses a multistage system that combines a naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle 3.5L liter V6 gasoline engine with two electric motors powered by a compact, lightweight, lithium-ion battery. For 2021 an even more dramatic power train improvement has been made to the hybrid drivetrain, as the system is now tuned to utilize a new battery strategy, and drive more power through the electric motors upon acceleration.   The multistage shift software has also been updated to take advantage of this electric power appearing earlier in the power...

In his column for the Daily Beast, political analyst David Rothkopf expressed dismay at the lack of indictments of those who helped plot the January 6th insurrection aimed at keeping Donald Trump in office, and explained that his frustration is shared by some in the DOJ who are working under Attorney General Merrick Garland. As Rothkopf notes, the clock is ticking as the midterm election looms and Republicans look to take over the House whereupon they will likely shut down the select committee investigating the Capitol riot. That, in turn, is all the more reason for the DOJ to expedite indictments that would compel associates of Trump to be more willing to offer up information that could make the House's work easier. Admitting that the criminal indictment of former White House advisor Steve Bannon is a start, the Beast columnist explained that Garland needs to pick up the pace. "A widely respected jurist, Garland was picked by [President Joe] Biden to depoliticize the DoJ and end the abuses of its power we saw under Trump appointees Jeff Sessions and Bill...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Stephen Fulton Jr. unified the WBO and WBC titles Saturday night with a majority decision over Brandon Figueroa in a matchup between undefeated super bantamweight world champions. The showdown was set up earlier this year with each fighter capturing a world title by defeating an undefeated opponent, as Fulton bested Angelo Leo in January to capture the WBO belt, and Figueroa stopped Luis Nery in May to earn his WBC title. The champions combined to throw over 1,700 punches over 12 rounds according to CompuBox. In the sixth round, each fighter landed power shots, with Figueroa connecting on 36 to Fulton’s 34. In a frantic 10th round, Figueroa looked to have Fulton hurt after numerous flurries of power punches. However, Fulton was able to recover in the final two rounds to win both the 11th and 12th on two judges’ cards. That final push helped Fulton hold on with the score of 116-112 from two judges overruling a 114-114 card. Both fighters believed they had done enough to win and were open to a rematch....
