The omicron variant of the coronavirus has been reported in the U.S., including in Maryland on Friday, but Dr. Anthony Fauci said that although this latest variant is obviously of some concern, it’s “nothing to panic about” right now. That’s because “we don’t know everything about it,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden. Among the unknowns are whether the omicron variant makes people sicker and whether it can evade vaccines and boosters. Fauci, who spoke to WTOP on Friday, said more information might initially come from South Africa, where omicron was first identified. Scientists in South Africa recently reported that preliminary findings suggested omicron may cause increased reinfections among people who’ve already had COVID-19. Scientists have also observed that omicron appears to have a good degree of capability of transmission, and is possibly more transmissible than the delta variant. “So what we need to do is just keep just keep following the situation, getting as much information and data as we can,” Fauci told...
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki gave an update on Friday to a question Fox News’ Peter Doocy had the previous day and said she looked forward to seeing his network report on it – saying this as Fox News was airing the White House press briefing. On Thursday, Doocy asked about what the Biden administration has been doing in response to the most recent mass thefts in California. “Big cities are dealing with smash-and-grab robberies,” said Doocy. “A record number of police officers have been shot and killed this year.  What is President Biden going to do about all this lawlessness?” Psaki responded: Well, Peter, I would say that, one, the president proposed additional funding in his budget over the funding that had been proposed by the prior president to increase and support local police departments, to make sure we keep cops on the beat, and we ensure that local communities are working in partnership to crack down on crime and any dangers they see in their community.  So, that’s one of the steps. We’ve also worked with a range...
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The MTA hosted its 10th annual blood drive Friday for employees and Metro-North commuters. “We’re in an official blood emergency right now,” Elizabeth Hernandez of the New York Blood Center told CBS2’s Leah Mishkin. READ MORE: Students Ride With Santa On NJ Transit's Holiday TrainThe blood supply usually drops around the holidays because of travel, bad weather and also flu season. Hernandez says if you add in the pandemic, you hit the drastic blood shortage they’re currently facing. Right now, she says they have a just one or two day supply of blood on the shelves. That should be at five to seven days. “Specifically if you’re O negative, please come to Grand Central Terminal and donate blood today,” Hernandez said Friday. Hernandez says in order to supply the 200 hospitals in the Tri-State Area daily, they need to collect about 2,000 blood donations a day. ”If we don’t have blood drives, we can’t supply the hospitals,” she said. The pandemic has created barriers. “Twenty five percent of our blood collections was within the academic world, and...

Dr. Marty Makary took aim at President Joe Biden on Thursday for painting Americans who hadn’t received booster shots as “the “villain.” “The problem is not that we are under-boosted,” the Johns Hopkins surgeon said in a segment with Fox News’ John Roberts and Sandra Smith. “If you look at the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] website right now, the risk of hospitalization in somebody who’s fully vaccinated with no booster is one in 26,000. That is very low,” Makary said. “Our problem right now is not that 19-year-olds with natural immunity have only gotten two doses of the vaccine and ‘need a booster,’ yet that’s exactly where the president went with this sort of circling the wagon around the idea that the villain is the unboosted, fully vaccinated American,” he continued. Biden said in a Thursday speech that he was seeking to expand a nationwide campaign promoting Covid-19 vaccination booster shots with “more outreach” as he complained that more than 100 million Americans had opted not to seek booster shots. “Go get your booster now,” Biden said, returning...
Sweet ride, bro, but you need to be alive to enjoy it. Facebook is a menace. COVID-19 is a menace. Conservatism is a cesspool. Together, those three ingredients have created a toxic stew of malevolent death and devastation. We can talk about all those things in the abstract, look at the numbers and statistics, and catch the occasional whiff of seditionist right-wing rhetoric. But I hadn’t really fully understood just how horrifying that combination of right-wing extremism, Facebook, and a killer virus was until I became a regular at the Herman Cain Awards subreddit. This series will document some of those stories, so we are aware of what the other side is doing to our country. Today’s cautionary tale is a Texas man who dreamed of that mid-life crisis car. People said they wouldn’t take a vaccine that Trump was pushing without proper scientific validation. I mean, this was the guy who wanted us to inject bleach into ourselves while shining a UV light up our butts.  After proper scientific validation, with proof that the vaccines were safe, most thinking people who...

VIDEO4:2904:29It's a 'fool's journey' to try to time the market, says Ray DalioSquawk Box Bridgewater Associates' Ray Dalio stood by his belief that cash is not the place to be despite the volatility in the markets triggered by the new omicron Covid variant. "Cash is not a safe investment, is not a safe place because it will be taxed by inflation," the founder of the world's biggest hedge fund said Tuesday on CNBC's "Squawk Box." During turbulent times, it's also important to be in a safe, well-balanced portfolio, the billionaire investor said. "You can reduce your risk without reducing your returns. You will not market-time this. Even if you were a great market timer, the things that are happening can change the world, so it changes what could be priced into the market," Dalio said. Joe Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to the team’s second win over the Pittsburgh Steelers this season, and he made clear he and the team have bigger goals than just knocking down a divisional rival. The Bengals moved to 7-4 with the win. He was asked after the game if there was any significance about beating the Steelers twice in a season. Burrow was 20-for-24 with 190 passing yards, a touchdown, a rushing touchdown and an interception. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers. (Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports) The Pittsburgh Steelers need to evaluate their options with Ben Roethlisberger while they still have a playoff spot to protect. As painful as it may be for a fanbase that has grown accustomed to seeing No. 7 behind center week in and week out, Roethlisberger is actively costing the Steelers games with his poor play and limited offensive output. Sure, his veteran stature and knowledge of the offense has held mend some fences with new offensive coordinator Matt Canada, but at this point, we know what the Steelers are with Big Ben behind center, and it’s not promising. Roethlisberger’s lack of mobility and arm strength all came to a head in a bad first half against the Cincinnati Bengals, which ended in a pick-6 right to former Steeler Mike Hilton. It’s great news for travel to the US as today the White House announced that fully-vaccinated Brits will be able to visit from November 8. President Biden said last month that a ban on British holidaymakers would be scrapped, but until now there had been no confirmed date. 2Brits will be able to visit the US from November 8Credit: Getty Under the new rules, fully-vaccinated passengers will be allowed to enter the country although they’ll still need to show a negative Covid test certificate, issued within 72 hours of travel.  The move marks the end of a near 600 day bar on international leisure travel to the US and was welcomed by airlines and tour operators. Research shows, the US border closure has resulted in the loss of more than 300,000 travel and tourism job in the last year. It’s not just the airlines who have suffered as a result of the ban either, the US economy has taken a hefty hit. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), UK arrivals represent eight per cent of all...

Google tracks your location as part of its drive to gather as much data as possible from its users to help it target advertisements. The company says it uses the data to “improve its location-based services”. What it means in practice is that opening the Google Maps app or using Google search on any platform logs your approximate location with a time stamp.  If you agree to let it record your location over time, Google Maps will display that history for you in a “timeline” that maps...

Americans are paying more these days for products like food and gasoline, thanks to rising inflation. Of course, this rising inflation will also impact the cost of buying a new home. "With inflation rising so aggressively and the fact that people's salaries and weekly income are not rising at the same rate, we end up with less discretionary money to spend each month," said George Ratiu, manager of economic research at Realtor.com. At the same time, home prices have also been rising. The consumer price index, which measures the cost of goods and services, shows that shelter rose 0.5% in October. It takes into account rent and owners' equivalent rent, which is what owners would pay to rent their home. Separately, home prices were up 19.8% year-over-year in August, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices. More from Invest in...

After a rough loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, it’s more than clear that the New Orleans Saints need to get Philip Rivers to town as soon as possible.  With Jameis Winston out for the season due to his torn ACL, the New Orleans Saints and Sean Payton have had to start Trevor Siemian at quarterback. Things have gone about as poorly as expected with him running the show. While Siemian has starter experience and can spin it at times, he’s simply nowhere near the level the Saints need him to be if they want to make noise the rest of the campaign. With that said, Philip Rivers had previously said he’d listen to New Orleans if they came calling. So, why haven’t they picked up the phone?Philip Rivers joining the Saints needs to happen as soon as possibleIn the 40-29 loss to the Eagles, Siemian ended up throwing for 214 yards and three touchdowns, though his final one came in garbage time. Guess you two can take a break for a couple months In the run-up to the November elections a couple of weeks ago, right-wing operatives, news organizations, and politicians could not stop talking about the crisis of race and education and how American history is taught in our nation’s schools. The easily digestible catchphrase for it all was critical race theory, or CRT. Even though CRT was not, is not, and has never been taught in schools below the college or post-graduate level, the boogeyman of something with the term “critical” in it was a lot more catchy than the more descriptive articulation of what conservatives were whining about—race and stuff. The best part of it all is that none of the coverage actually discussed American history and race, which might actually be something worth teaching children. In a remarkably unsurprising turn of events, not unlike the week where “caravans” of migrants were threatening to invade our southern borders, the mentions and acute terror of CRT being taught in mythic elementary schools has...vanished. In the end, CRT was and will always be a conservative talking...
In 2016, the British data firm Cambridge Analytic (which supported Donald Trump during that year's presidential election) used Steve Bannon as its director of U.S. operations — and Cambridge had a billionaire backer in Rebekah Mercer. But now, according to the Daily Beast's Roger Sollenberger, Mercer is distancing herself from the far-right MAGA Republican. "The nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center alleges that the Trump campaign and a pro-Trump super PAC run by Bannon illegally coordinated through Cambridge to pump out millions of dollars in political ads for Trump," Sollenberger reports in an article published on November 16. "Brendan Fischer, director of reform at CLC, said the evidence generated in the closed investigation specifically strengthens their case against Bannon, who was named in the foreign national probe but was never questioned." Bannon and Mercer were allies in 2016. But now, according to Fischer, Mercer appears to be throwing Bannon under the bus. "Federal election filings show the Trump campaign paid Cambridge Analytica $5.9 million in the 2016 cycle, and MAN1 reported paying another $5 million to the firm after the super...
The term “scraping the bottom of the barrel” doesn’t quite do justice to the new crop of MAGA talk show hosts that think Alex Jones is too tame. One of them is Stew Peters. He went from being a failed rapper, to a failed bounty hunter, to now a full-time COVID conspiracy theorist. And yes, being full-blown MAGA, there’s the obligatory police report documenting domestic violence as well. Perhaps Trump will push him to run for Senate?  In the meantime, he hosts his own podcast that features a who’s who of Trumpian rejects: George Papadopoulos, Lin Wood, Michelle Malkin, Sidney Powell, and Karen Fann—the state senate president responsible for the disastrous Arizona audit. I don’t usually care what he’s doing, but this came across my feed. It’s as hilarious as it is sad. If there’s ever been an example of the cult-like cognitive dissonance of the MAGA crowd, this is it.  Some Q-nut told Stew Peters that he has been “magnetized” by being around people who have had the vaccine, claiming vaccinated people somehow “shed” vaccine components outside their bodies. (Obviously, this has been debunked.) As...

For the first time in a long time, Mike Francesa made a live appearance on WFAN Monday afternoon. The Mike and the Mad Dog legend called in to celebrate the retiring Steve Somers, but Francesa gave listeners a throwback rant when he lost it as WFAN’s iconic overnight host repeatedly struggled to accept a compliment. Somers is a WFAN original, joining the station as their overnight host for its trailblazing launch back in 1987. Less than a month after announcing he plans to retire soon, the 74-year-old radio host said goodbye Friday night, and again Monday afternoon with a more than hour-long special during the midday timeslot. After being welcomed to the show, Francesa had to quickly cut Somers off from commemorating Mike and the Mad Dog. “Steve, don’t talk about Dog and myself. New York (CNN Business)Bummer for bargain hunters: It may be harder to snag designer clothes at TJ Maxx, Burlington and Ross. These discount chains thrive when there is a glut of clothing in the market. The problem right now: There's very little unsold clothing sitting around.Supply chains are choked off and brands don't have as much, if any, extra stuff to dump.
