SEPTEMBER 29: U.S. President Donald Trump participates in the first presidential debate against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden MSNBC’s Chris Hayes went in on former President Donald Trump after it recently came to light that the twice-impeached, one-term president appeared at rallies, meetings with Gold Star families, a party for a Supreme Court nominee, and even the first debate with then-candidate Joe Biden—all while knowing full well he had tested positive for COVID-19.  The timeline as laid out by Hayes shows dereliction of duty even more repugnant than usual for Trump.  According to a memoir by Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, titled, The Chief’s Chief, before Trump tested negative for COVID-19 on Sept. 26, 2020, he tested positive—nearly a week before he publicly disclosed his condition.  But instead of quarantining out of an abundance of caution, the White House chose to dismiss Trump’s positive result and allow the president to attend an event honoring his Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett—with her children in tow—along with several other GOP members—all without masks, indoors and zero social distancing. This event was later acknowledged as a super-spreader event. ...
More than half of Americans who lost their jobs in the pandemic and remain unemployed are not interested in returning to work, according to a new survey suggesting that the dire national labor shortage is likely to persist. The poll published on Thursday by the US Chamber of Commerce found that 53 percent of Americans who became unemployed during the pandemic say they are not active or only somewhat active in looking for work.  Fifty-six percent say they can get by for more than six months before it becomes essential to return to full time work, with 11 percent saying it will be more than a year before it is necessary to return to work, and 15 percent saying it will never be essential.  No detail was given on whether this cohort was comprised of retirees, or how they'll manage to survive without a job.   The poll is a troubling signal amid a worker shortage that is exacerbating supply chain issues and spurring inflation, with businesses across the country struggling to fill millions of open positions. As of September, the number...
The Pennsylvania SPCA is looking for the public's help identifying the person or persons responsible for fatally shooting two stray cats in South Philadelphia.  The bodies of the cats were discovered by a caretaker of a feral cat colony at Pier 80 on the Delaware waterfront, who notified the SPCA, the organization said in a Thursday release. "The colony caretakers were suspicious as both cats had been otherwise healthy and vaccinated against common environmental illnesses," the PSPCA said. The cats were discovered right next to another feral cat colony that had been the site of several arson attempts in 2017, according to the organization. The cats were taken to the PSPCA’s Philadelphia headquarters by an officer, where they underwent necropsies to confirm their cause of death and collect evidence, the organization said. Bullets were found in both cats, and are being sent for further processing through the Philadelphia Police Department. Information about the identity of the individual, or others involved, can be reported anonymously to the Pennsylvania SPCA’s cruelty hotline, 866-601-7722 or cruelty@pspca.org. “These acts of cruelty are especially monstrous,” Julie Klim, CEO...
Getty Eagles center Jason Kelce attempted to fire up his teammates with an emotional speech. All-Pro center Jason Kelce hurt his knee in Week 12 and was due to be re-evaluated. Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni promised an update on Wednesday, December 1. In the meantime, the team brought in a familiar face for a tryout. Luke Juriga was at the practice facility and could join the practice squad assuming he’s healthy. The undrafted center out of Western Michigan was on the Eagles’ training camp roster before getting waived with an injury designation on August 21. Juriga (6-foot-3, 298 pounds) was initially signed in 2020 and saw action in one game. He played 14 snaps at center in relief of Kelce. The Eagles are likely bringing him back as an insurance policy in case Kelce is out for an extended period. Or maybe they already know the results of Kelce’s MRI and plan to announce it. The Eagles have only one backup center on the active depth chart in Nate Herbig. And he may need to start...
The Braves re-signing Freddie Freeman has always been an obvious move for Atlanta and his reported contract demands make it perplexing a deal isn’t done. With more big-name free agents being taken off the market, one of the biggest names remaining is first baseman Freddie Freeman, who most recently helped the Atlanta Braves capture their first World Series win since 1995. And the belief has long been that the club would re-sign one of the unquestioned franchise leaders. Yet, with a work-stoppage and lockout looming at the turn of the calendar to December, no deal has gotten done between Atlanta and Freeman. As such, many fans are wondering why the Braves haven’t re-signed him. Now, that baffling fact is looking even more so in regards to what the first baseman is asking for in a new deal. As reported by MLB insider Jon Heyman, Freeman is looking for approximately a six-year contract worth a total of $180 million, which is well within reason for the 2020 NL MVP. Word is Freeman had been seeking about $180M for 6 years. Seems...

Manchester United are competing with Everton and Southampton for Anderlecht's Spanish star Sergio Gomez. The former Barcelona left-back has shone for Vincent Kompany's side this season, scoring five goals and setting up six more. 1Gomez has caught the attention of United with his scintillating displays for AnderlechtCredit: Rex Red Devils, Toffees and Saints scouts all watched the 21-year-old on Saturday - when he scored twice in Anderlecht's 3-1 win at Charleroi. Gomez has been the Brussels club's shining light this season, with Manchester City legend Kompany coming under fire after some poor results. The Spain Under-21 ace joined the Belgian giants from Borussia Dortmund in June. He is under contract until 2025. A locally-born product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, he helped Huesca win promotion to the Primera Liga in 2020. The three Premier League clubs will however have to contend with further interest in Gomez from Inter Milan, Ajax, Villarreal, Marseille, Rennes, Lille and Monaco. As the District closes a deadly year, D.C.’s top prosecutor says he’s ready to expand a violence-prevention program into four new neighborhoods. D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine explained that the funding is there for organizations who want to run a Cure the Streets site. The nationally recognized program, up and running in D.C. since 2017, employs former felons and community members who know their neighborhoods to disrupt and prevent crime there. The expansion would bring the city to 10 Cure the Streets sites. The program is funded through the D.C. Council and the attorney general’s office. “I understand that there’s a greater demand right now than there is supply of Cure sites. And so I’ll just hold off and ask people to be patient with us, as the program expands,” Racine said. Racine’s office identified the four sites as Congress Heights, Brightwood Park-Petworth, Ivy City and Historic Anacostia. “Among the neighborhoods we looked at, and to be sure we looked at at least another 15, those were the ones that were the most crying out for help,” Racine told WTOP....

NASCAR will close its season this week with a three-day celebration in Nashville that ends with the crowning of three new national series champions in Kyle Larson, Daniel Hemric and Ben Rhodes. NASCAR will do burnouts on Lower Broadway near popular honkytonks Doc Holliday’s Saloon and Bootleggers Inn. Its 2022 cars will be on display at Riverfront Park and drivers will participate in Q&A sessions before the finale Thursday night at the Music City Center. Then attention turns to the pivotal upcoming season. Among the issues facing NASCAR is its Next Gen car, set to debut in February following a yearlong delay during the pandemic. The series also wants to continue tweaking its sprawling, 38-week schedule, which now includes more short tracks, more road courses and a dirt race — but puts the season finale at Phoenix Raceway for a third consecutive year next season despite calls to rotate the championship event. NASCAR understands it must improve its at-track experience for fans and recognizes the urgent need to showcase its competitors and create interest in its current...

New York (CNN Business)So much for the house always winning. Casino stocks have had a brutal year. Penn National Gaming (PENN), which operates more than 40 US gambling locations, has plunged 40% this year. That makes Penn, which also owns a 36% stake in Dave Portnoy's Barstool Sports betting and entertainment company, one of the worst performing stocks in the S&P 500 so far this year. But Penn isn't the only gambling firm hurting in 2021: Shares of Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and Las Vegas Sands (LVS) are down more than 25% and 35% respectively. Several factors are hitting the industry hard, and on a global scale. Covid-19 concerns are continuing to impact travel, particularly in Macao, the former Portuguese territory that is now a special administrative region of China and has become Asia's gambling mecca. And now Beijing is cracking down on casino operators on Macao's Cotai Strip — continued bad news for Wynn and Sands, which each own properties there. With that being the case this morning, we are ready to take advantage. While the omicron variant has certainly added a headwind to the experiential side of Disney's operations (think parks,...
President Joe Biden ruled out fresh lockdowns as a response to a new variant of Covid-19 but told reporters at a Monday press conference that his administration was looking into the possibility of additional vaccine booster shots. “I’ll be putting forward a detailed strategy outlining how we’re going to fight Covid this winter,” Biden said, promising another press conference on Thursday. “Not with shutdowns or lockdowns, but with more widespread vaccinations, boosters, testing, and more.” To date, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration have approved booster shots developed by Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, adding a third dose to the two-shot series from Pfizer and Moderna and a second dose to the J&J regimen. But Biden said the federal response to Covid-19’s Omicron included looking at the possibility of adding new boosters in the future, saying the feds were working with all three companies “to develop contingency plans for vaccines or boosters.” “I expect the new normal to be everyone ends up getting vaccinated with a booster shot, so we’ve reduced the number of...

The family of a college junior who died after fighting in a fraternity’s amateur event is looking for answers after a preliminary investigation found that safety precautions were overlooked in connection to the incident. Nathan Valencia, a 20-year-old student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), died on Nov. 23 after participating in the Kappa Sigma fraternity’s annual “fight night,” which took place at an off-campus location, according to 13 Action News.               more   Florida’s lawmakers are considering expanding state-funded health insurance for children. The idea has gained traction among Republicans and Democrats, and two competing proposals would increase the amount of money beneficiaries can make. Currently, families making less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for the state’s program, KidCare. However, the same families do not qualify for Medicaid. State Rep. Robin Bartleman (D-FL-104) has filed legislation to increase the income threshold by 10 percent every year for the next five years. Households making less than 250 percent of the federal poverty would now be eligible for the state program. Her proposal would require families to pay a $40 per family premium. “What are you going to choose (to pay for) food, child care, which has gone up 200%, or health care?” Bartleman asked. Similarly, Florida Republicans Rep. Chip LaMarca (R-FL-93), Rep. Ardian Zika (R-FL-37), and Sen. Ed Hooper (R-FL-16) has filed legislation to increase the income threshold to 400 percent of the federal poverty level. However, the Republicans’ proposal would also require families to pay premiums...
It may not be sexy. But it’s efficient. It’s not forceful. It’s fluid. Judge Tua Tagovailoa by any standard you’d like to create and don’t be surprised when the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback clears the bar. Sunday’s 33-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, who came into the game with the second-best defense the Dolphins have faced this season, concluded the first 16 starts of Tagovailoa’s career. That means his rookie season tenure finally closes, and upon further review, not even the toughest critic can downplay what the Dolphins’ 2020 first-round pick has accomplished. The former Alabama standout has completed 351-of-524 passes (67%) for 3,515 yards, throwing for 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He’s also scored six rushing touchdowns. Overall, he’s produced a 90.5 passer rating during that stretch, and delivered a 9-7 record as a starter when leading the Dolphins offense during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In Ryan Tannehill’s last 16 starts with the Dolphins, which included wins in the 2016 season, he delivered a 10-6 record as Miami’s starter. That was seven-years...
EXPERTS are saying that the searches for extraterrestrial [ET] life are looking at the wrong signs.  When scientists engage in these searches, they often assume that biological life on other planets functions the same as Earth.  2It's possible that if ET life exists, it's completely different from what humans thinkCredit: Getty It’s this anthropocentrism, or “human-centered” point of view, that could be stopping us from eventually finding life outside our solar system. It’s the same as assuming that intelligent life on other planets would be similar to Earth because of humans. However, it’s possible that we haven’t interacted with aliens because their technology is much more advanced than ours. Earth is still a young planet compared to others so it could be likely like ET life has invented technology the same as we did. It’s possible that those inventions have exceeded us by a lot. Advanced ETs could have developed artificial intelligence or virtual worlds beyond our comprehension. SETI senior astronomer Seth Shostak believes that if aliens are intelligent enough to seek out Earth “will probably have gone beyond biological...
London (CNN Business)More than 20 months into the pandemic, the US job market has reached a milestone. What's happening: Weekly claims for unemployment benefits fell to 199,000 last week after seasonal adjustments, their lowest level since 1969. They hit a peak of 6.15 million in April 2020.So, does that mean employment conditions are back to normal? Not quite. "Although the plunge in [unemployment] claims was certainly welcome, it does not indicate a dramatic turn in the labor market," PNC chief economist Gus Faucher said in a note to clients. "Claims are highly volatile, especially around holidays."The reason claims are so low may also have to do with ongoing distortions in the labor market.Read More"Claims have been trending down as employers keep a tight hold on to their employees because of the labor shortages," observed Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at Bleakley Advisory Group.Remember: Demand for workers is high, but the number of people actively seeking work has slipped. Luke Fickell has led the Cincinnati Bearcats to an unbeaten record after the regular season and they’re celebrating in a pretty interesting way. Throughout the regular season, nobody has managed to find a way to beat the Cincinnati Bearcats. For the second straight season, Luke Fickell has managed to lead his Bearcats to an unblemished regular season record. Cincinnati now sits at 12-0 after a thorough thrashing of the  East Carolina Pirates on the road. And what does a 12-0 Cincinnati team do after finishing off their regular season with another dominant win? Apparently they celebrate by jumping up and clinging on to ceiling support beams in the visiting locker room. Fickell led the Bearcats on the field and it looks like he’s leading them in this unexampled, amusing, and boisterous celebration. LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA is bowl eligible and has secured its first winning season since 2016. The Bruins have one more goal going into their regular-season finale against California on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl — not having a letdown after a huge win over Southern California. The Bruins (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12) have dropped six of their last seven the week after facing the Trojans, including all three under Chip Kelly. With a chance to get to eight wins and secure a better bowl spot, Kelly is hoping his team still has plenty of motivation after a 62-33 victory over the Trojans last Saturday. “There has been no lull. They’ve got the same energy and juice,” Kelly said. “They’re hyped up for every game this year.” Cal (4-6, 3-4) also comes in off a huge rivalry game victory after keeping its bowl hopes alive with a 41-11 win at Stanford. The Golden Bears have won three of their last four after a 1-5 start to the season. Coach Justin Wilcox said the focus has been more on...
With the Alpine skiing World Cup returning to North America for the first time in two years, Mikaela Shiffrin can't wait to race in front of a home crowd again. This weekend's two races in Killington, Vermont, are the only women's World Cup events on American snow this season and for Shiffrin there is both a personal unbeaten streak and an all-time record on the line. She has won all four previous World Cup slalom races in Killington and the event had become a bit of annual signpost for Shiffrin before they were canceled last year because of the pandemic. "I don’t know how to quantify it, but it doesn’t feel like the season has officially started without Killington," Shiffrin said. "To have that first race or the beginning-of-the-season races in the U.S., that’s been a huge hallmark of every season that I’ve ever had." MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly keen on a move for Switzerland international Denis Zakaria in a bid to bolster their midfield. The 25-year-old is out of contract at Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the season and could be on his way to the Premier League. 1Zakaria is not expected to sign a new contract with Borussia MonchengladbachCredit: Getty But the Red Devils are set to face stiff competition when it comes to signing Zakaria. Barcelona, Juventus and Roma are all eager to sign the midfielder, according to journalist Nicolo Schira. Zakaria has rejected Gladbach's offers of a new contract and seems destined to move on. And Manchester United's current midfield pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay have been the subject of intense criticism this campaign. The 40-cap Swiss star is free to begin negotiations with clubs outside of Germany from January 1 regarding a pre-contract agreement. Although Gladbach could be tempted to...

MANCHESTER UNITED have been playing the long game with managerial prospect Maurico Pochettino. Pictures reveal the moment legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson wined and dined the Argentinian coach back in May 2016. 2Sir Alex Ferguson and Maurico Pochettino dined at Scotts in London's MayfairCredit: MagicmomentsUK Poch was at that time in charge at Tottenham and the Red Devils were just days away from sacking Louis van Gaal. The swanky Mayfair dinner did not result in the 49-year-old taking over at Old Trafford that month. Van Gaal was instead replaced by Jose Mourinho, who lasted in the United hot seat until December 2018. But the pictures hint at what has long been reported - that Fergie rates Pochettino highly and wants him in charge at the club. That wish could finally come true as United continue the hunt for a new manager after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
