MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A Golden Valley man will spend nearly a decade in prison for fatally head-butting a Medtronic scientist at a downtown Minneapolis bar in 2019. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says Erik Kravchuk, 30, was found guilty in September of unintentional second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter for the death of 42-year-old Aleksandre Sambelashvili. He was sentenced to just more than eight years, which is about four years less than the recommended sentencing guidelines. Aleksandre Sambelashvili (credit: CBS) Their deadly encounter happened on the early morning of July 28, 2019, during a private gathering. Surveillance footage from the bar shows Kravchuk suddenly attacking Sambelashvili, who then falls to the floor, hits his head and is knocked out. Sambelashvili, a father of two from Minnetonka, died about a month later from a brain injury. Medtronic officials said in a statement in 2019 that “many patients with cardiac problems have been restored to better health and lived longer lives” due to Sambelashvili’s work with the company.   More On WCCO.com: School Closings & Delays Minnesota Weather: Schools Close As...

A kundalini yoga guru who was accused of running a 'cult within a cult' is the subject of an upcoming HBO Max docuseries exploring the origins of the practice and its rise in popularity in western wellness circles.   Guru Jagat, the founder of the celebrity-loved Ra Ma Institute, died of a pulmonary embolism following ankle surgery on August 1 at age 41, leaving behind both devoted followers and fierce critics who were suspicious of her sudden death.   Breath of Fire, an upcoming four-part series about Jagat's role in bringing kundalini to a new generation, is based on Vanity Fair's recent profile of the controversial yoga leader, a white woman whose real name was Katie Griggs.   When Vanity Fair journalist Haley Phelan interviewed Jagat for the story in April, just months before her death, the kundalini star brushed away any allegations of wrongdoing while former members claimed she was running an abusive cult.  'I’m a controversial figure,' Jagat said at the time. 'This goes with the territory. I’m not, like, love-and-light Suzie. I’m very direct and I talk about s**t people...

Andrzej Sikora has admitted giving Jennifer and James Crumbley shelter from 'death threats' in the wake of the massacre allegedly carried out by their son Ethan in Oxford, Michigan, last Thursday.  But he says he had no idea the pair had stayed at his Detroit studio overnight, and only discovered the Crumbleys stay after their arrest at 1:30am Saturday.  Jennifer, a realtor, has a longstanding professional connection with Sikora, who has completed work on at least one building at her behest.  Sikora's attorney, Clarence Dass, told DailyMail.com that the Polish-born painter hadn't knowingly shielded the Crumbleys from the law. Dass said the couple told his client on Friday that they were 'just staying for a few hours to avoid death threats.' She also vowed to use her 'prosecutorial discretion to its fullest, including filing charges that are supported by probable cause.'  'Everyone involved in the handling and use of firearms on the set had a duty to behave in a manner such that the safety of others was protected, and it appears that certain actions and inactions contributed to this outcome,' Carmack-Altwies said....
The bizarre and unsettling YouTube channel of the 'homeless drifter' who allegedly stabbed a 14-year-old boy to death in Palm Beach Gardens last month has come to light, and shows the suspect's paranoia and severe mental health problems. Semmie Williams, 39, is accused of fatally stabbing Ryan Rogers when the two crossed paths on November 15. Around 7:30 pm that evening, surveillance video captured footage of a man believed to be Williams walking towards the I-95 overpass on Central Boulevard, where Ryan's body was later found. On Thursday morning, police announced charges against Williams after they revealed law enforcement in Miami took him into custody in connection to Ryan’s death.  On Williams' YouTube channel, which bears his name and image, he raves about being stalked, abused and harassed by members of the public as well as police, while oftentimes accusing passerbys in his clips of being racists, cult members or undercover police, according to Fox News. MSNBC anchor Joy Reid said Friday on her show “The ReidOut” that the Republican Party was a death cult “waving the pro-life flag.” Reid said, “Republicans love to say they’re pro-life, but the more accurate term is they’re pro-birth. Because once that baby is born, they stop caring. Depending on the color of your skin, they may not see you as fully human. If they did care about children after they are born, they would be supporting universal health care, social services, food for kids whose family can’t afford it, fully funding education, and gun reform, so kids don’t have to do mass shooter drills. They would support the Build Back Better agenda, which invests in housing and the environment and acts as the biggest expansion on affordable health care in a decade. Not one Republican voted for that bill.” Reid added, “Pro-life, really? The more appropriate slogan, in my humble opinion, is anti-choice, as this same party passes regressive policies that harm women, children, and families by taking choices away from them. Or maybe it is pro-death as this...
“Welcome to the new Gilead,” Joy Reid, declared, kicking off about segment on Mississippi’s controversial abortion law and the pro-life movement. The MSNBC host had previously claimed the religious right is “dreaming of a theocracy” à la the country of Gilead, which practices systematic rape and torture in the book and HBO series, The Handmaid’s Tale. “Women are not welcome here,” said Reid on Friday night. “Correction: women who do not exist solely as vessels for a fetus are not welcome here.” Reid addressed this week’s oral arguments over Mississippi’s abortion law before the U.S. Supreme Court. The law bans most abortions in the state after 15 weeks, which is about eight weeks sooner than the threshold allowed under Roe v. Wade. The consensus among the legal observers is that Roe will be substantially weakened, if not outright overturned when the court announces its decision in June. Reid said if Republicans were actually pro-life, they’d support robust social programs, gun control, and President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda: Republicans love to say that they’re pro-life. But the more accurate term...

Dr. Anthony Fauci criticized Fox News host Lara Logan Thursday for her comments comparing him to an infamous Nazi war criminal earlier this week, calling the conservative journalist's comparison 'slanderous' and 'disgusting.' Speaking to MSNBC host Chris Haye Thursday night, Fauci called on Fox to take disciplinary action against the journalist - who faced backlash Monday after she compared the chief White House medical adviser to Josef Mengele, a Nazi doctor whose hideous experiments on Jewish concentration camp victims during World War II earned him the chilling moniker 'Angel of Death.'  ‘It’s an insult to all of the people who suffered and died under the Nazi regime in the concentration camps,’ Fauci, 80, fumed on Hayes' primetime political commentary program All In.  Dr. Anthony Fauci criticized Fox News host Lara Logan Thursday for her comments comparing him to an infamous Nazi war criminal earlier this week, calling the conservative journalist's comparison 'slanderous' and 'disgusting.' The Murdoch family removed Glenn Beck from the network after the host's conspiracy theories became dangerously unhinged. Tucker Carlson, however, has received broad protection even as the show promotes conspiracies about masks, vaccines, and health experts themselves. As approximately zero of us have noticed, government pandemic expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has been strikingly absent from Fox News in the last half-year or so. While the Fox News evening lineup continues to do their level best to stoke death threats against him, comparing him to infamous Nazi torturers and propagating bizarre conspiracy theories about him, the man the Murdoch family is blithely putting in the crosshairs of delusional Trumpian mobs is rarely—if ever—himself appearing on the network's supposed "news" programs. Politico brings us a mini-scoop of sorts: It isn't because Fox News hasn't been asking him. Politico reports that Fox programs have been "trying to book Fauci for months but he's been turning them down." Most of the rest of Politico's piece is analysis, and we can skip that part because we can provide it ourselves. Is Dr. Anthony Fauci right...

It has been five years since California voters approved Proposition 66, a measure that ostensibly was going to speed up the time between handing down a death sentence and an execution. But as a practical matter, nothing has really changed. In fact, it has been 15 years since California last executed someone, leaving us with a Death Row population of nearly 700 people, none of whom face execution in the foreseeable future. So much for the fix that death penalty advocates promised. Here’s a better one: End the death penalty in California once and for all. Of course, there are stronger reasons for getting rid of capital punishment than the slowness of the legal process. The moral arguments align against killing even convicted murderers, and a legal system as imperfect as ours has proved to be should never be used to determine whether someone lives or dies. In fact, the California Committee on Revision of the Penal Code finalized a report last month calling for abolition primarily because “the death penalty as created and enforced in California has not and...

Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter. This story is a collaboration between Public Health Watch and the Investigative Reporting Workshop. In April 2008, Jonathan Agin’s 27-month-old daughter, Alexis, was diagnosed with DIPG, a rare brain tumor. Agin, then a civil defense lawyer in Washington, DC, was dislodged from his comfortable life and dragged into the surreal world of a young cancer victim’s parent: The sleepless nights in the din of a hospital, the grueling clinical trials. “I always had hope,” Agin said in a recent interview, though he knew most DIPG patients survive no more than two years after diagnosis. Alexis lived for 33 months after her tumor was found. Toward the end of her life, she was unable to walk or speak. She died at 3:03 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2011. “My knowledge back then of children with cancer was watching St. Jude and Ronald McDonald House commercials,” Agin said. The image of a “smiling, bald-headed kid living happily ever after” was cruelly misleading, he learned, when it...
A 101-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard, the oldest person charged with complicity in the murder of thousands of detainees, claimed in court he was just a farmhand who worked nearby.  The centenarian, identified only as Josef S, appeared in court on Thursday charged with 'knowingly and willingly' assisting in murder of 3,518 people at the Sachsenhausen death camp in Oranienburg, north of Berlin, between 1942 and 1942.   He claimed in court he had worked 'on a large estate near the Pasewalk resettlement camp', where he trained as a locksmith and blacksmith and shod horses for a farmer.  The judges and claimants have been trying to eke out an admission from the defendant that he was indeed an SS guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. But the 101-year-old has stubbornly maintained he was always just a civilian, despite documents clearly showing a man with the same name and date and place of birth working at Sachsenhausen from October 1941 to February 1945.  Charges against him include aiding and abetting the 'execution by firing squad of Soviet prisoners of war in 1942' and...

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT  Graphic footage shows the moment a naked man was fatally stabbed just outside the lobby of an apartment building in Brooklyn on Friday, a grisly murder that comes as violent crime continues to skyrocket in the Big Apple. Vitor Bauza, 56, was charged on Saturday with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the gruesome murder of Ernest Diaz, 40. Diaz was found laying at 303 99th Street in Bay Ridge around 2:50 p.m. Friday, with multiple stabs to the chest and stomach, according to the NYPD. He was brought to Lutheran Hospital at NYU Langone shortly after his discovery, where he was pronounced dead.  Diaz reportedly lived with Bauza. A custodian who saw the pair in the lobby told the New York Post: 'Whoever did this really wanted him dead. He had stab wounds all over the place.' Neighbors said Diaz took the elevator from the fifth floor and stumbled out. Forty years ago, actress Natalie Wood drowned off the coast of Catalina Island. Authorities classified her death as an accident, concluding the 43-year-old star of “West Side Story,” who couldn’t swim, had been drinking the night before she was found floating face-down in the ocean waters. Her death has been a Hollywood mystery, the topic of tabloid speculation, TV specials and books that explored whether she was the victim of a homicide. The theory gained dramatic interest a decade ago. In 2011, 30 years after Wood’s death, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials reopened the investigation. Then, in 2013, county coroner’s officials changed Wood’s cause of death from “accidental drowning” to “drowning and other undetermined factors.” The new coroner’s report cited fresh bruises on the actress’ arms and knee, along with a scratch on her neck and a scrape on her forehead, as evidence that she might have been assaulted before she drowned. The new report also noted “conflicting statements” about when Wood disappeared and whether she had argued with her husband, actor Robert Wagner, who — along with Christopher...

Fox Nation host Lara Logan has ignited a controversy by comparing Dr Anthony Fauci to the notorious Nazi Josef Mengele, who conducted hideous experiments on inmates at Auschwitz during World War II to earn his moniker as the 'Angel of Death.' Logan was taking part in a discussion on Fox News Primetime of the Biden administration's response to the new super-mutated Omicron variant of COVID-19 on Monday when she launched into a tirade against the president's chief medical adviser.  'This is what people say to me, that he doesn't represent science to them. He represents Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor who did experiments on Jews during the Second World War and in the concentration camps,' Logan opined.  'And I am talking about people all across the world are saying this because the response from COVID, what it has done to countries everywhere, what it has done to civil liberties, the suicide rates, the poverty – it has obliterated economies – the level of suffering that has been created because of this disease is now being seen in the cold light of...
Lara Logan, once a deeply respected and award-winning investigative reporter, told Fox News viewers on Monday night that “people all across the world” are telling her that America’s top infectious disease expert is just like Josef Mengele, the notorious Nazi doctor known as the “Angel of Death.” With the new super-mutated Omicron variant sparking concern around the globe over a possible new round of lockdowns and restrictions, conservatives and right-wing media have started pushing conspiracy theories about the new virus strain. A number of Fox News hosts and GOP politicians have suggested that Democrats are making up COVID-19 variants in an effort to “cheat” and steal the upcoming election. At the same time, while Dr. Anthony Fauci has sounded the alarm over the “troublesome” Omicron’s potential resistance to immune protection, the chief White House medical adviser said he doesn’t anticipate any additional travel restrictions as he doesn’t sense a “high degree of severity” with the virus. During an appearance on Fox News Primetime on Monday, Logan—who hosts a program on Fox Nation, the network’s online streaming service—complained that the coverage...

YouTube Ed Asner as Sid Weinberg in "Cobra Kai" season 3. When “The Karate Kid” first came out in 1984, it was not known for its big name stars. Pat Morita, who played the iconic Mr. Miyagi, might have been the most famous of the cast, but even he only appeared in a few supporting roles on television, and really made his big breakthrough through the “Karate Kid” franchise. “Cobra Kai” has taken a similar approach, bringing back big-name stars from the original franchise – namely Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, and Martin Kove – but letting the content speak for itself, rather than letting celebrity names hog all the spotlight. However, there has been one noteworthy actor who appeared multiple times in the show. Ed Asner, who died in 2021, was a big-time Hollywood name for decades before his appearance in “Cobra Kai,” and even appeared in some roles you might recognize. Here’s what you need to know about the legendary actor.Asner’s Acting Career Is Extensive and Stretches Back Six Decades VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty ImagesEd Asner...

NOT many people expected a film about a 10-year-old boy who battles two bumbling burglars to become a massive success and holiday staple, but a lot of it is due to the incredible cast. Released in 1990, Home Alone went on to bank $285.8million in the US and Canada, and another $190.9million in other countries against a budget of $18million, making for a huge profit. 10Released in 1990, Home Alone was a massive success and continues to be a holiday stapleCredit: Alamy 10The film has since spawned four sequels, however, it's the original that people continue viewing The classic film also launched a then unknown child actor, Macaulay Culkin, into one of the biggest stars in the world and helped his costars land even more roles. Cal expected to be heading into next Saturday’s regular-season finale against USC with bowl eligibility on the line. There was potentially a lot out there for the Golden Bears, including their first winning Pac-12 record in 12 years and the chance to sweep their three in-state conference rivals for the first time since 1958. UCLA blotted out those dreams on Saturday night with a 42-14 rout at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. What’s left is an 8 p.m. game Saturday matching two 4-7 teams that expected more from their seasons. Quarterback Chase Garbers, who was pressured into his least-successful game of the season, promised the Bears will have plenty of motivation fo  the Trojans. “USC’s up there for most-hated teams we play, right up there with Stanford and obviously UCLA,” he said. “There’s a lot to play for.” Senior defensive back Daniel Scott agreed. “We’ve had a lot of ups and downs and challenges this year, but we’re a pretty resilient team,” Scott said. “We’ve got to come with a little bit of...
The Queen has suffered another 'annus horribilis' in 2021, according to a new documentary, but experts believe her struggles over the last year could actually strengthen the monarchy. The monarch, 95, has been blighted with tragedies over the last 12 months - with husband Prince Philip dying in April, and her son Prince Andrews facing questions over his controversial friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges. Along with health complications, the royal has also faced family fallouts, with grandson Prince Harry moving to Montecito, California, with his wife Meghan Markle, and the reportedly fraught relationship between the prince and his older brother William. Charles Anson, the Queen's press secretary between 1990 and 1997, made the claims in new documentary 2021: The Queen's Horrible Year, which aired last night on Channel 5.    The Queen, pictured with a walking stick here in October 2021 attending a Service of Thanksgiving to mark the Centenary of the Royal British Legion at Westminster Abbey in London, has had a tough 2021 Despite a fraught year, multiple...
