U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Friday that the U.S. and other nations had suspended talks with Iran about returning to a nuclear deal because the regime did not seem “serious” about negotiations. The Times of Israel reported: United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that this week’s round of negotiations between world powers and Iran in Vienna was halted because Tehran does not seem to be serious about reaching an agreement with the US that would see a joint return to compliance with the nuclear agreement. “What we’ve seen in the last couple of days is that Iran right now does not seem to be serious about doing what’s necessary to return to compliance, which is why we ended this round of talks in Vienna,” Blinken told Reuters. The secretary of state said the US would now consult with its allies, including Israel, on how best to move forward. “And we will see if Iran has any interest in engaging seriously, but the window is very, very tight.” The Iran deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan...
Software It looks like Microsoft has launched a new campaign to force Windows 10 and 11 users to use their browser. It uses a new method, very aggressive from my point of view. When a user enters the Google Chrome installation page, they get a pop-up message that Microsoft Edge is the best browser or Google Chrome is a bit old and they should try something new. Here are three examples of such messages: “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with Microsoft’s extra confidence” “This browser is 2008! Do you know what’s new? Microsoft Edge. ” No one said, “I hate saving money.” Microsoft Edge is the best online shopping browser “ Microsoft Edge is a low-cost browser (less than 6%) even if Windows 10 and 11 are already installed. During an interview aired on Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins stated that he agrees with President Joe Biden ruling out shutdowns over the Omicron variant and that “it’s not clear that that much gets accomplished” with shutdowns, while there are “lots of consequences there for businesses, for schools.” Collins said that “we’re doing it about right, right now” with our response to the Omicron variant. He continued, “Shutdowns are obviously draconian measures, and it’s not clear that that much gets accomplished by those sorts of steps in communities and there’s obviously lots of consequences there for businesses, for schools. So, I think the president’s right to sort of take those off the table right now, but also to emphasize the things we can do.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett

Spiers, who has a son, said that she resents the notion "that adoption is a simple solution, and I resent it on behalf of Maria, who found the choice she made traumatizing and still feels that pain, 44 years later. Even when an adoption works out well, as it did in my case, it is still fraught." The U.S. Supreme Court is deciding whether to uphold a Mississippi law that prohibits most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A decision to uphold the law would run contrary to the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion case. Former U.S. congresswoman Katie Hill recently tweeted that being pregnant has bolstered her belief that women who do not wish to be pregnant should be able to get an abortion. "I didn’t think it was possible to become more pro-choice than I already was, but after 7 months of pregnancy all I can think about is how wrong it would be to make someone do this who doesn’t want to," Hill tweeted.
Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) refused to answer several questions during a CNN interview with congressional correspondent Lauren Fox on Thursday. Partial transcript as follows: FOX: You have met directly with the president perhaps more than any other senator in the Democratic Party, maybe aside from Joe Manchin. What lessons have you learned? What kind of negotiator is the president? And is it hard for you to tell the president, “No, I can’t do that”? SINEMA: President Biden served in the Senate for a long time so he knows how negotiations work. And he also during this process called me repeatedly and asked me to continue working with Senator Rob Portman and others in the G10 to find this bipartisan agreement and showed a real commitment to wanting this bipartisan achievement, which we’ve — which we’ve accomplished. And I think the big challenge in front of us is for us to all work together in an accountable and transparent way to actually implement this law. In the eyes of the legal system, animals are property.  If a person shoots a dog, the court will ask: whose dog?  Was the owner scared, or sad?  What is the market value of the dog?  And if a person shoots a cow, or pig, or chicken, a court will rarely have any questions whatsoever. Given how the law—and society—views animals, it is difficult for lawyers to go to court and vindicate their rights.  So, animal lawyers invoke whatever laws and legal mechanisms can advance the interests of animals. The primary, federal statute protecting animals is Animal Welfare Act.  But this statute does not protect the vast majority of animals who need protection: the 9 billion animals per year that Americans raise and slaughter for food; or birds, mice, and rats that researchers use for experiments.  And even where the Animal Welfare Act does protect animals, the protections are minimal. Sometimes state laws increase these minimal protections.  But, by definition, state laws vary by state.  Some laws protect specific animals: the Endangered Species Act protects endangered animals and their...
(CBS Pittsburgh) — The AFC North remains one of the NFL’s messier divisions going into Week 13. The Baltimore Ravens, coming off a not-so-pretty win over the Cleveland Browns, lead the way with an 8-3 record. The Cincinnati Bengals, who demolished the Pittsburgh Steelers, follow the Ravens at 7-4. The Steelers sit at 5-5-1, trailed only by the 6-6 Browns. While every team is .500 or better, no team has really distinguished themselves. Even the Ravens, who hold the AFC’s best record, have failed to impress. Six of their eight wins have come by a touchdown or less. The Steelers, their opponent this week, have lately seemed like they shouldn’t even be part of the playoff conversation. “You look at the Steelers, and you wonder if that tie is that going to come back to haunt them or to help them, if they really go on a great run,” according to NFL On CBS analyst James Lofton. “But, as I look at it, it just seems like the Browns and the Steelers, the quarterbacks are just limping toward the finish...

CHICAGO (CBS) — If you live in Chicago and care about city services, take note of an important deadline coming up. Wednesday is the day the City Council is supposed to vote on a new ward map – but no one has seen it yet. As CBS 2 Political Investigator Dana Kozlov reported Tuesday night, many Chicago communities are hoping the new map gives them more unity – rather than leaving their neighborhoods split between oddly-shaped wards each under the jurisdiction of a different alderman. READ MORE: Jussie Smollett Trial: Lead Detective In Investigation Explains On Witness Stand How Smollett Went From Victim To SuspectAt Ainslie Street and Central Park in Albany Park, walking from the 35th Ward to the 33rd Ward or the 39th Ward involves a distance of a matter of feet. Three wards splitting up one neighborhood equals fragmented representation in City Hall for residents. A new map could change that. But here is the problem – no one knows what the new ward map will look like. Less than 24 hours before aldermen are mandated by...

1/3 We have been disheartened to learn that some individuals and businesses have been using our Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey brand to celebrate the Kyle Rittenhouse case verdict, despite the profound loss of life from those events. — Heaven Hill Brands (@Heaven Hill Brands) 1637523138 The company added: "There is no link between our Rittenhouse Rye brand, which was started post-prohibition to commemorate Rittenhouse Square, and this case. Serbia erupted in chaos as anti-government protesters blocked bridges and roadways, causing police to get involved in the protest. Hundreds of protesters appeared at the capital Belgrade, the northern city of Novi Sad, among other locations to protest. They blocked roadways and bridges protesting the laws on property expropriation and referendum. Police officers intervened and started making arrests as helicopters flew overhead. However, protesters warned that this will not be the last protest. Environmental groups and civil society organizations are angry over the lowered referendum threshold and allowance for the quick seizure of private property. The change in laws could help the Rio Tinto company launch a lithium mine in western Serbia that would destroy farmland and pollute the waters, despite the public’s disapproval. Environmental issues in Serbia have been ignored by those in power, forcing civilians to begin protesting for their rights to a healthy environment. Adding a new mine to Serbia would only increase pollution, putting even more people in danger. If the Serbian people are not listened to, they have already promised to continue protesting for...
PICKING out the perfect ring and setting up your partner’s dream engagement can be stressful – and one man’s experience has certainly been thanks to his future mother-in-law. Assuming that no one accepts Donald Trump’s offer for a "ratings bonanza" debate on what he calls the Big Lie — and what opponents call his Big Lie — we are stuck with a whole lot of pontification about Joe Biden. Virtually every day, I see a headline along the lines of Democrats Say Biden Needs to Talk More About X. Here’s one in the Washington Post: "Democratic Allies Press the White House to Focus More — And Say More — on Inflation Worries." And another in Politico: "Democrats Want Biden to Start Swinging at Republicans. Allies Aren’t Sure He Can." But when reporters (who double as frustrated political strategists) write so many stories quoting Democrats, they are often choosing to broadcast the advice or at least give it a broader platform. And presidents with a strong standing don’t attract so many free political pointers — or such widespread skepticism in their first year that they’ll actually run for reelection. WILL TRUMP RUN AGAIN? AGAINST BIDEN? THE SHADOW-BOXING BEGINS So this wave of here’s-what-Biden-should-do pieces is a flashing neon light...
Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) said in a statement Monday that Republicans should oppose any funding bill that fails to address President Joe Biden’s crises, such as inflation, open borders, and the soaring debt. “The border crisis, the inflation crisis, the supply chain crisis and the government debt crisis—each of the crises facing our nation today can be traced back to specific policies pursued by Democrats. We can’t give Biden a green light to continue on this destructive path,” Banks, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), said as the House will likely vote by the end of the week. The Hoosier conservative contended that voting for a continuing resolution (CR) to extend government funding would only continue to further the Biden agenda. “Republicans should stand up for working American families and oppose any funding bills that don’t include measures to reverse these man-made crises,” Banks remarked “A vote on the continuing resolution is a vote for the Biden agenda.” Congress faces increasing government deadlines ahead of the new year. Biden’s Democrat-led majority must pass a government funding bill, a...
Some health experts are sure that the South African Omicron variant is already in the United States, it just has not been detected yet. Dr Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told CBS News' Face the Nation that the variant likely found its way into the U.S. before flights from seven south African nations were paused. The restriction was instituted on Monday by President Biden in an effort to prevent the potentially vaccine evasive, highly infectious, variant from finding its way stateside. Omicron was first detected in South Africa last week, and has since been found in more than a dozen countries, including the UK and Canada. Dr Scott Gottlieb (pictured) believes that the Omicron COVID-19 variant is already in the U.S. and it just has not been sequenced yet Gottlieb says that since so many people are flying into America and then testing positive for the virus, it is extremely likely at least one person brought the variant with them. Another expert, Dr Chris Thompson of Loyola Chicago, agrees. The U.S. halted travel from...

She then began to explain just what about his behavior was so bad. "The first thing was that when my mom was about to start preparing the turkey for roasting, he stuck his hand inside it and pulled out the little bag with the giblets. She asked what he was doing. Nintendo and Illumination announced exactly two months ago that Chris Brad would be starring as Mario in the upcoming Mario movie. During these eight weeks, the conversation surrounding this choice focused on the popular plumber accent. Does it get the traditional Mario accent or does it do something else? In a new interview TooFabMario’s co-producer Chris Meledantri defended Brad’s cast and called for Mario’s voice for uniqueness. “I can tell you that the voice he makes is unique for us and for Mario,” Melodontry told AFP. TooFab. “Yes, I can not wait until people hear it. “ TooFab He asked the producer about his decision to cast non-Italian Brad as an Italian plumber. Meledandri replied that he was Italian-American and understood the feelings of the people about this choice. Luigi’s character, presented by the Italian Charlie Tag, was a headliner to the Italian look of the famous plumber duo, he said. However, according to Melodontry, one can expect the Mario movie to address the Italian accent or its lack thereof. “We talk about it in the film,” he...
President Joe Biden released a statement following the conclusion of the Ahmaud Arbery case, praising the guilty verdicts while adding they were "not enough." Three white Georgia men all face life in prison after being found guilty on Wednesday of chasing down and murdering Arbery, a 25-year-old black man. In his statement, Biden noted the racial element of the case and lamented that no verdict would bring Arbery back. THREE GEORGIA MEN FOUND GUILTY OF MURDERING AHMAUD ARBERY "Ahmaud Arbery’s killing — witnessed by the world on video — is a devastating reminder of how far we have to go in the fight for racial justice in this country," Biden said. "Mr. Arbery should be here today, celebrating the holidays with his mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, and his father, Marcus Arbery. Nothing can bring Mr. Arbery back to his family and to his community, but the verdict ensures that those who committed this horrible crime will be punished." The defendants' lawyers argued self-defense, while prosecutors claimed Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor William "Roddie"...

Payments to a law firm representing former President Donald Trump made by the Republican National Committee are raising a few eyebrows among Republicans who worry about the party's priorities in the face of upcoming elections, CNN reports. "This is not normal," said a former top RNC official. The payments to Fischetti and Malgieri LLP totaled $121,670 were first reported by the Federal Election Commission this Monday. The firm was hired by the Trump Organization amid the Manhattan District Attorney's investigation into Trump's finances. According to a spokesperson for the RNC, the committee "approved paying for certain legal expenses that relate to politically motivated legal proceedings waged against President Trump," and defended the payments as "entirely appropriate" as the party "continue[s] assisting in fighting back against the Democrats' never ending witch hunt and attacks on [Trump]." But some RNC members and donors say the party is forgetting its own neutrality rules. "Some of these same officials who spoke to CNN also questioned why the party would foot the legal bills of a self-professed billionaire who was sitting on a $102...
California’s new legislation will require public schools and colleges to provide free menstrual products, offering major support for low-income women. Like so many laws and policies, those that negatively impact healthcare disproportionately impact low-income families.  Consider, for example, laws and policies that disregard the COVID-19 pandemic.  As Justice Sotomayor’s dissent in FDA v. ACOG recognized, “COVID–19’s mortality rate is three times higher for Black and Hispanic individuals than non-Hispanic White individuals,” largely because “minority and low-income populations are more likely to live in intergenerational housing.” Likewise, when states like Texas pass major restrictions on abortion, it of course impacts what the law (for now) considers a fundamental right for all women.  But wealthy women can still take time off of work and travel to other states for medical care, whereas low-income women, predominantly women of color, are subject to the full force of the law.  This is particularly true when the law restricts abortion-related telemedicine. The flip-side is that small, legal changes that promote healthcare can be majorly beneficial for lower-income populations.  One important example is California’s new...
Tucker Carlson said the liberal media will not probe the motives behind the Waukesha parade massacre because it will prove their woke bail and prison reforms are responsible after it was revealed the suspect was recently released on a $1,000 bail after a domestic dispute.  Liberals are calling to abolishing federal prisons - which would release criminals such as sex traffickers and murderers - and quashing ‘excessive bail’ just a day after Darrell Brooks, 39, drove his red SUV into a Christmas parade, which injured 62 and killed six.      'The media and local authorities have decided to speak for [Brooks],' Carlson said on Tuesday.  'And the main thing they want you to know is that these killings had absolutely nothing to do with the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict just two days before. Nothing whatsoever. The timing is just one of those amazing coincidences.' Carlson commended the media by saying: 'This has to do with the [Rittenhouse] verdict. That's the obvious conclusion. Is it true? Again, we have not confirmed it, but we can be absolutely certain that the national media will...
Matt Nagy has faced questions about his job security with the Chicago Bears before, but never quite like Tuesday morning at Halas Hall. As the Bears were in the middle of preparing for Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions, Patch.com reporter Mark Konkol, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2011 while at the Chicago Sun-Times, published a report that Nagy had been informed the game would be his last as Bears coach. After nearly three hours of silence from his Bears bosses, Nagy entered the Halas Hall media room at 12:01 p.m. and refuted the report himself. He said he had not yet spoken to Bears Chairman George McCaskey, President and CEO Ted Phillips or general manager Ryan Pace this week and hadn’t been told he would be fired. “That (report) is not accurate,” Nagy said. “I have great communication with ownership, with George and Ted and Ryan, but I have not had any discussions.” Nagy’s denial during a 10-minute news conference was just one piece of a strange day in Lake Forest as the Bears...
Eating turkey may be a Thanksgiving tradition, but there is no longstanding tradition behind the cruel and unsustainable way most turkeys are raised today. The modern industrial factory farming system churning out millions of birds for tables across the country—and more than 9 billion chickens, pigs, and cattle annually—is a world away from the farms that produced animals for food just a few generations ago. The consequences of this industrial agriculture take-over have been devastating for animals, the environment, communities, and human health. The vast majority of Thanksgiving turkeys are raised indoors in crowded sheds with tens of thousands of other birds.  They’re unable to carry out natural behaviors and often struggle to hold up their weight due to more than 60 years of selective breeding that favors unnaturally oversized bodies. As a result, today’s turkeys are twice as big as traditional turkeys from past decades. The average weight of a modern bird is 31 pounds, more than twice the weight of the turkeys raised in the 1960s. Factory farm turkeys reach these weights in just a few months—an alarmingly...

Zach Wilson has inched closer to returning after missing four weeks with a sprained PCL. Wilson went through his second week of practice with another pregame warmup on Sunday. Robert Saleh felt good about the No. 2 overall pick’s progress and will make a decision on his return this week. “Zack had a really good workout yesterday,” Saleh said Monday. “He’s being evaluated today. We’ll get him through another one tomorrow and be able to evaluate him from there. And then we’ll be able to make a decision Wednesday morning.” The Jets have played with three different quarterbacks in Wilson’s absence, with each signal caller flashing moments of competency. Mike White threw for 405 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions against the Bengals in an upset win Week 8. White played well enough that Saleh left the door open that he could continue starting even if Wilson was healthy. Then he struggled immensely against the Bills in Week 10, tossing four interceptions in a blowout loss. Josh Johnson threw for 317 yards with three...
