President Joe Biden tried to put a positive spin on the dismal November jobs report released on Friday by the Department of Labor that included taking a shot at the media. During a speech at the White House on Friday, he talked about the supply chain crisis and said that the situation is improving and even criticized the media for reporting on and showing images of empty store shelves. “On Monday, I convened a group of CEOs some of the largest retailers and grocery stores as well as leading companies that works with small businesses across the country, and they reported that their investments are up, shelves are well-stocked, and they’re ready to meet consumer demand for the holidays,” said Biden. “Now I said that yesterday and then I saw a couple of your stations put on — you found some empty shelves. They’re old empty shelves, but it doesn’t matter. But go back and take a look at some of those shelves again, okay?” he continued. “But the point is that the vast majority of the shelves are filled and the CEOs of not only the suppliers but the CEOs of UPS and FedEx, which are on track to deliver more...
Police in Los Angeles have announced 14 arrests in connection with 11 recent smash-and-grab robberies at stores where nearly $340,000 worth of merchandise was stolen, but all the suspects have been released. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said that most of the accused robbers suspected of ransacking businesses between November 18 and 28 bailed out or met no-bail criteria, and one is a juvenile. At a joint news conference on Thursday announcing the arrests, both Moore and Mayor Eric Garcetti called for an end to a no-bail policy for some defendants aimed at reducing overcrowding at Los Angeles County jails during the coronavirus pandemic. Garcetti said with the pandemic easing, it's time to make room again in lockups for criminals who commit violent acts and put store employees in danger.  LAPD's top cop said at least $338,000 in goods were stolen over ten days from stores and malls across the city that incurred $40,000 in property damage. Investigators are searching for multiple outstanding suspects, he said. The brazen heists were part of a rash of organized retail crime in...
(CNN)Democrats in the Senate have for the third time tried to use a technical procedure to try to include immigration provisions in President Joe Biden's Build Back Better Act, putting everything on the line for what could be the last attempt to try to pass some sort of overhaul of the nation's immigration laws before the new year. The Senate parliamentarian considered arguments from Democratic and Republican aides Wednesday morning on whether immigration provisions could be included in a massive tax and spending bill that would expand the nation's social safety net.The process the parliamentarian is taking is known as a "Byrd bath" -- named after former Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who came up with the rule to stop either side from abusing the reconciliation process. The process would decide whether Democrats would succeed in passing a form of legalization for undocumented immigrants, a priority for the Biden administration. Elizabeth MacDonough's role as the Senate parliamentarian means she advises the chamber on how its rules, protocols and precedents should be applied as Democrats and the White House figure...
CHICAGO (AP) — Defender Aaron Long and forward Jordan Morris are back on the U.S. national team for the first time since major injuries, joined by 12 players who could make their international debuts against Bosnia and Herzegovina in an exhibition on Dec. 18 at Carson, California. Morris, 27, tore his left ACL on Feb. 20 while on loan from Seattle to Swansea, three years after tearing his right ACL. He returned to the field for the Sounders on Nov. 2. Long, 29, tore his right Achilles tendon while playing for the New York Red Bulls on May 15. He trained with the U.S. team last month but was not on the roster. Defender Bryan Reynolds, not used by Roma manager Jose Mourinho in recent months, is the only player on the roster from a major European club. Goalkeeper Matt Turner, defender Walker Zimmerman, midfielders Kellyn Acosta and Cristian Roldan, and forwards Ricardo Pepi and Gyasi Zardes are among the national team regulars on the roster. Europe-based regulars will return next month for the resumption of World Cup qualifying. Among...
No Ohio State. No Michigan State. No Penn State, Wisconsin, or even Northwestern. Even Nebraska has made it to Indianapolis during the first 10 years of the Big Ten Championship Game. In year 11, the Michigan Wolverines finally make their inaugural appearance as they face West Division Champ, Iowa. Iowa hasn’t appeared in the game since 2015 when they lost a low scoring slugfest to the eventual champ, Michigan State. Both Michigan and Iowa had their own unique path to their division crown. Michigan lost to their in-state rival Michigan State on Halloween weekend and needed help from Ohio State and Purdue to eliminate the Spartans from the title race. Then to end the season, UM consummated their East crown with their first victory over OSU since 2011. MONTREAL (AP) — Cale Makar scored to put Colorado ahead to stay late in the second period, Valeri Nichushkin had a goal and an assist, and the Avalanche beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on Thursday night. Andre Borkovsky and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for the Avalanche, who bounced back from an ugly 8-3 loss at Toronto a night earlier. “I think our team is really understanding of what we have to do on both sides of the puck in hockey games,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “And I think last night was a real example. In Toronto, we came out and they were more determined, they checked harder than we checked.” Goalie Jonas Johansson made 19 saves for Colorado, playing on back-to-back nights because starter Darcy Kuemper is out with an upper-body injury. “I was really proud of him,” Bednar said. “As a young goalie, generally we wouldn’t play our guy back-to-back but in this case he hasn’t played a lot of hockey and I wanted to see what he was made of tonight because last night was a tough...
White House chief of staff Ron Klain , known for his prodigious tweeting, took to the platform on Friday to promote a worse-than-expected jobs report. Klain fired off seven tweets and retweets shortly after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the jobs numbers. The economy added just 210,000 new jobs in November, much fewer than the half-million that economists had predicted. “America is back at work,” Klain said, highlighting a chart that shows how, despite the gloomy headline number, the labor force participation rate ticked up to its highest level since March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was taking hold. The jobs numbers and labor force participation rate are based on different surveys that are both updated in the monthly employment reports. America is back at work. https://t.co/msPBhjTEng— Ronald Klain (@WHCOS) December 3, 2021 While the jobs numbers from the establishment survey disappointed, the unemployment rate, taken from the separate survey of households, declined by 0.4 percentage points to 4.2%. This remains above the 3.5% rate it was at prior to the pandemic but is about...
Here’s a collection curated by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists of what’s arriving on TV, streaming services and music platforms this week. MOVIES — Fresh off his Oscar nomination Riz Ahmed teams up with “Beast” director Michael Pearce for “Encounter,” an alien invasion/family drama hitting Amazon Prime Video on Friday, Dec. 10. Ahmed plays an ex-Marine with a host of troubles that only compound when he suspects his ex-wife, with whom he shares two sons, may have been infected by the extra-terrestrials. What starts as a straightforward science fiction adventure takes on its own life as a family drama — a choice some might disagree with. And if “Encounter” isn’t for you, Ahmed’s best actor-nominated performance in “Sound of Metal” is also still available on Prime. — Sandra Bullock struck viewership gold with “Bird Box” on Netflix and now is back with another very different project, “The Unforgivable,” about a woman trying to reenter society after serving her time in prison for a violent crime. Bullock plays the ex-convict, who finds that people aren’t quite ready to forgive her...
Former President Donald Trump is reportedly still on a warpath to avenge his exile from social media platforms. Although Trump appears to have failed in his attempt to create a far-right, MAGA-fueled social media platform of his own, the former president may have found a right-wing business partner to help advance his agenda. According to The Daily Beast, Trump is holding private discussions with the Canadian-based right-wing video sharing platform, Rumble. Email and server records reportedly suggest that Rumble and Trump's nearly defunct platform Truth social already have shared infrastructure. Per The Beast: "In recent months, Rumble and the twice-impeached former president’s social media venture have been in talks about a potential business partnership, according to two people familiar with the matter. One of these sources, who has spoken to Trump about the prospect, said the former president has repeatedly inquired about how much Rumble could pay him—and has bragged that whatever Rumble offers, his partnership would be worth “double that,” given his massive fanbase of conservatives and Republican voters." The timing of both companies going public also raises...
London (CNN)Earlier this week, we wrote to you from Barbados during Prince Charles' whirlwind tour as the Caribbean island took its first steps as a republic. We were one of several media outlets invited to join the heir to the throne's flight to Bridgetown to cover the celebrations marking the Queen's removal as head of state. For the journey, the Prince of Wales flew on RAF Voyager -- an Airbus A330 owned by the UK for use on official overseas visits by members of the royal family and government ministers. Charles most recently hopped on board with wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall for their four-day trip to Jordan and Egypt. The UK owns several Voyager planes, which are normally used for air-to-air refueling and strategic air transport. However, one plane in the fleet was converted in 2016 for VIP transportation -- and this was our ride. Sometimes jokingly referred to as "Heir Force One," last year it received a £900,000 (nearly $1.2 million) makeover -- to repaint the plane from military gray to the colors of the Union flag (red, white...
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio sheriff's deputy who shot Casey Goodson Jr. in the back five times was charged with murder Thursday, as Goodson's family also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit and the now-retired deputy publicly shared details of what happened from his perspective for the first time. The December 2020 shooting of Goodson, who was Black, by longtime deputy Jason Meade, who is white, led to protests in Columbus and many lingering questions, in part because the killing wasn't recorded on body or dash camera footage.Meade's lawyer says the deputy fired when Goodson pointed a gun at him. Goodson's family has said he was holding a sandwich, not a gun, but noted he also had a license to carry a firearm. The case remains under criminal investigation by the U.S. attorney's office with help from the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.Goodson's mother, Tamala Payne, said she was "overwhelmed with joy" at word of the indictment Thursday."It's been a year of sadness, it's been a year of grief, it's been a year of pain," Payne said at a late-morning news conference,...

CNN's left-wing media correspondent Brian Stelter was lambasted Thursday over his handling of the ongoing scandal plaguing his network.  Before CNN announced that it was suspending Chris Cuomo over his involvement in his brother's scandals, Stelter went to bat for the embattled anchor when critics blasted him for not addressing the controversy on Monday's installment of "Cuomo Prime Time."  "For what it's worth, when Chris Cuomo addressed his actions on the air back in August, he said ‘this will be my final word on it,’ and he hasn't addressed the matter on TV since," Stelter tweeted that evening. Cuomo did briefly address the scandal on his SiriusXM radio show Wednesday.  FLASHBACK: CNN'S BRIAN STELTER CLAIMED CHRIS CUOMO UPHELD JOURNALISTIC ‘BOUNDARIES’ DURING COLBERT INTERVIEW The "Ruthless" podcast panned the "insane" tweet and took aim at Stelter as a so-called "media reporter."  "It's like a classic comms response of like ‘Asked and answered,'" co-host Michael Duncan reacted on Thursday. LIONEL MESSI is now a record seven-time Ballon d'Or king, a four-time Champions League winner and is now hoping to fire Paris Saint-Germain to glory. The 34-year-old Argentine, who also fired his nation to Copa America success in the summer, is quite rightly heralded by many as the greatest player of all time. 13 Lionel Messi is now a seven-time Ballon d'Or winnerCredit: EPA 13 Having graced Barcelona's Camp Nou for over 15 years and now the Parc des Princes, many great players have purred over getting to take to the field alongside the icon. PSG strike partner and ex-Barca teammate Neymar referred to it as playing with his 'idol', while Xavi gushed: "It is clear that Messi is on a level above all others. Those who do not see that are blind." But while those two were fantastic in their own right for Barcelona, not everybody that has had the pleasure of playing with Messi can say the same. Barca bosses even started to be criticised for 'wasting' some of Messi's peak with poor decision making. There are several...
SEPTEMBER 29: U.S. President Donald Trump participates in the first presidential debate against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden MSNBC’s Chris Hayes went in on former President Donald Trump after it recently came to light that the twice-impeached, one-term president appeared at rallies, meetings with Gold Star families, a party for a Supreme Court nominee, and even the first debate with then-candidate Joe Biden—all while knowing full well he had tested positive for COVID-19.  The timeline as laid out by Hayes shows dereliction of duty even more repugnant than usual for Trump.  According to a memoir by Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, titled, The Chief’s Chief, before Trump tested negative for COVID-19 on Sept. 26, 2020, he tested positive—nearly a week before he publicly disclosed his condition.  But instead of quarantining out of an abundance of caution, the White House chose to dismiss Trump’s positive result and allow the president to attend an event honoring his Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett—with her children in tow—along with several other GOP members—all without masks, indoors and zero social distancing. This event was later acknowledged as a super-spreader event. ...
For those of you who haven’t heard, Martin Scorsese has announced that he’s set to produce and direct a biopic about the Grateful Dead with Jonah Hill playing Jerry Garcia, the band’s iconic pater familias. The news has sparked quite a buzz in the Grateful Dead world with excitement over the prospect of the famously iconoclastic band coming to the big screen mixed with some healthy skepticism about the ability of Hollywood to pull off a movie about the Dead and Garcia with any degree of authenticity. Garcia died of a heart attack at age 53 in a San Geronimo Valley drug treatment center in 1995, tragically ending the Grateful Dead’s 40-year career. Since then, he’s become a kind of sainted figure, so you can be sure that any movie about him will be the subject of intense discussion and debate among the band’s legions of devoted Deadheads. “I love Scorsese and I love how he shoots and uses music (both in his docs and story films), but I’m still very afraid of what he’ll do to the Grateful Dead...

SANTA CLARA — Once the 49ers’ busses arrive Sunday morning at the Seattle Seahawks’ stadium, Emmanuel Moseley will head through two sets of double doors and veer right. He’ll enter a musty locker room where the defense’s quarters are as cramped as a galley kitchen. When he laces up his red and black cleats, they will give him inspiration, and they will serve as a reminder about the ongoing COVID pandemic, one that took the life of his childhood friend, LaKiya Rouse, last fall. She was just 26. “It definitely shocked me, because it hit home,” Moseley said Thursday, “but COVID was hitting so many homes around the world.” Rouse’s portrait is custom painted onto Moseley’s cleats as part of the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” campaign this week. He promised that tribute last year to her family, which includes her sister, MaKala, Moseley’s best friend back in Greensboro, North Carolina. “When I was home recently, I made a surprise visit to them and let them know again I was going to do it. (CNN)In an interview with ABC that aired Thursday, Alec Baldwin shed light on what happened in the moments prior to the fatal shooting on the set of the film "Rust" that claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The actor explained to ABC's George Stephanopoulos that the scene being rehearsed in the church at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico was going to show him cocking the gun, and he and Hutchins were going over how she wanted to position his hand. "And I cock the gun, I go, "Can you see that? Can you see that? Can you see that?" and she says... and then I let go of the hammer of the gun, and the gun goes off. I let go of the hammer of the gun, the gun goes off," Baldwin recalled. He said he was aiming the gun just off to the side of the camera, as Hutchins was instructing him to, in her direction. "I'm holding the gun where she told me to hold it, which ended up being aimed right below her armpit, was what...

New York (CNN Business)The US jobs recovery has picked up steam again in the final months of the year, bringing some good news in the face of persistently rising prices and a new Covid variant.Economists polled by Refinitiv expect another sizable jobs gain in Friday's November employment report — 550,000 positions. If that holds true, it would be the biggest monthly gain since July, when more than a million jobs were added. But even so, America's labor market is still not back to its pre-pandemic strength. If the forecasts are right, the nation would still be down more than 3.5 million jobs compared to February 2020.On Wednesday, ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson said the recent strong numbers show "good potential for the rest of the year." ADP's own private payrolls report showed 534,000 jobs added in November.Read MoreMeanwhile, weekly claims for unemployment benefits fell last month below their pre-pandemic numbers for the first time since the recovery started, dropping below 200,000 to a level not seen since since 1969. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden looked out over an audience of government scientists and framed his latest plan for fighting COVID-19 as an opportunity to at last put an end to divisiveness over the virus, calling the politicization of the issue a “sad, sad commentary.” And then he tacked on a political dig. Some people “on the other team,” he said Thursday, were threatening to hold up government spending and endangering the nation’s credit out of pique over vaccination requirements. “Go figure,” he added. It was a quick aside in a Biden speech that otherwise struck a largely bipartisan tone. But it served as fresh evidence that after taking it on the chin for months, Biden and his allies are increasingly willing to hit back, casting Republicans as the true obstacle to the nation’s recovery from the pandemic. The president’s efforts to confront the coronavirus have long attracted a litany of fiery statements, legal challenges and more than a few barbs from his predecessor. But Biden was elected on the promise of depoliticizing the virus response and following...

Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports Tony Pollard has proven to be a potential star with the Cowboys but, if Dallas sticks with Ezekiel Elliott, where could they trade the young RB? It certainly appears that the Dallas Cowboys are heading towards a crossroads with their running back room. Ezekiel Elliott remains under contract for quite a while and, frankly, it’s not going to be anytime soon that they can get out of that deal with the way it’s structured. But meanwhile, Tony Pollard has emerged as a dynamic, dangerous playmaker. Considering that Pollard is younger, has less mileage on the tires, and is seemingly just better right now — although, admittedly, Elliott has unwisely been playing through injury for the past few weeks — it would make sense if the Cowboys pivoted to Pollard as the lead back. But if Jerry Jones and the organization wants to remain committed to Elliott, then they would be almost foolish to let a player with Pollard’s talent and intrigue waste away as a backup when he could offer...

After the Cowboys offense took a bit to wake up, Michael Gallup capped off a beautiful drive with a TD that even Randy Moss had to show love to. Michael Gallup hasn’t been back in the Dallas Cowboys lineup but for a few weeks after missing almost half of the season with an injury. And it’s been clear that the third man in the vaunted wide receiver trio has been working his way back into form. On Thursday Night Football against the Saints in Week 13, it certainly seemed as if Gallup was getting back to his usual self. After his fellow wideout start, Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb, help put the Cowboys on the Saints’ 1-yard line, Dak Prescott looked to Gallup for a goal-line fade to try and get the six points. MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) — Jerome Baker is enjoying new challenges on a defense that has sparked a 4-game win streak. The Dolphins inside linebacker has added playing along the defensive line to his bag of tricks, but says the team isn’t asking him to do anything more than what’s already required. He’s just doing something different. “That’s funny because it’s different. It is truly different. Linebacker, you have a little time to think and react to things. SANTA CLARA (KPIX 5) – Collegiate soccer’s NCAA tournament ends at Santa Clara University starting Friday night, presenting a unique opportunity for the Broncos’ who are trying to become the first back-to-back champion in over a decade. “It would be a good trivia question because it would be two national championships in the same calendar year which has also never happened,” said head coach Jerry Smith. A repeat trip to the College Cup didn’t seem possible after the Broncos won just three of their first nine games to start 2021, but came on strong at the end, winning 12 of their last 13. They face conference rival BYU for a chance to play in Sunday’s final. SANTA CLARA (CBS SF/AP) — Elijah Mitchell has been one of the NFL’s biggest surprises this season. Whether it’s going from overlooked sixth-round project out of Louisiana-Lafayette into one of the league’s productive backs as a rookie, or his knack on nearly every run for the San Francisco 49ers to churn out a couple of extra yards, Mitchell exceeds expectations. READ MORE: Smash-And-Grab Thieves Hit San Jose Eastridge Mall Jewelry Store; 5 Sought“He competes for every single yard,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “One of the biggest things for me as a play-caller is when I see with my own eyes that it’s going to be second-and-10 and I start to look down and think about what I’m calling next. Then people in the box tell me it’s second-and-6. I don’t totally believe him because I saw that he was going down and I don’t realize that he fell forward and got 4 yards. When it’s like that, which he does all the time now, you keep going, it helps you keep doing it.” Mitchell has been consistently doing that all...
SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — What’s in a name? In Scotch Plains, a lot, when it comes to a public golf course. A club was renamed this week, just in time for a 100th anniversary gala on Friday night celebrating its African-American history, CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reported Thursday. READ MORE: CBS2 Visits Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst In N.J., Where Afghan Refugees Are Assimilating To Life In The U.S.At first glance, it looks like your average golf course. But dig a little deeper, beyond the green, and you’ll see it’s definitely not. “The socials they had here. That’s what the place looked like,” Preserve Shady Rest Committee member Thurman Simmons said. It was the very first African-American-owned and operated golf club in the United States. The clubhouse is an old farmhouse from the 1700s. In 1921, a group of prominent Black investors bought the property and started Shady Rest Golf and Country Club, a place that became a hotbed for sports and entertainment during a time when African-Americans were not welcome everywhere. “Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, W.E.B. A majority of Los Angeles County voters back two new state laws designed to spur housing construction, including one that significantly changes traditional single-family zoning, a new poll finds. The poll, by the Los Angeles Business Council Institute, done in cooperation with the Los Angeles Times, provides one of the first tests of public reaction to the new laws, which could bring about a dramatic change to California’s development landscape. The laws, Senate Bills 9 and 10, take effect Jan. 1. They were a culmination of a years-long debate in Sacramento over local zoning restrictions that can drag down housing production. The fight stirred intense opposition among homeowner groups, especially in Los Angeles, where opponents said the proposals threatened to destroy single-family neighborhoods. So far, the poll indicates, a majority of voters have not adopted that dire view. Countywide, 55% of voters support Senate Bill 9, which lets property owners construct duplexes, and in some cases fourplexes, in most single-family-home neighborhoods statewide. By contrast, 27% were against the law while 18% were undecided. Senate Bill 10, which lets local...
CINCINNATI (AP) — For the first time in years, the Cincinnati Bengals are positioned to make some noise in December. The Bengals (7-4), with offensive playmakers and a defense that coalesced in back-to-back blowout wins, find themselves in the thick of a wide-open AFC playoff race. Except for the 8-3 Baltimore Ravens, every AFC team has at least four losses, with 12 at .500 or better. Cincinnati, playing four of its last six games at home, is confident. “We haven’t had that feeling in a long time here,” Bengals safety Jessie Bates said. “I think we’re ready for it.” The Los Angeles Chargers (6-5), which visit Cincinnati on Sunday, are in that playoff mix despite losing four of the past six games. Their 28-13 loss to the Denver Broncos was full of costly mistakes. They haven’t managed to win two straight games since October. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw two touchdown passes last Sunday, but also had two interceptions, one returned 70 yards for a touchdown and the other was in the end zone. The inconsistency has been hard for...
VIDEO5:2105:21Suzy Welch: Company execs acknowledge Covid may never go awaySquawk Box CEOs across the economy were optimistic in their 2022 outlook before the omicron variant of Covid emerged. Are they still now? A recent survey from the Business Roundtable revealed confidence about the outlook into next year, but that was conducted before the first cases of omicron were reported. On Wednesday, as the first omicron case in the U.S. was revealed in California — a second case from a Minnesota resident who recent travelled to New York City was revealed on Thursday — CNBC Contributor Suzy Welch led a CNBC Leadership Exchange virtual roundtable with CEOs across various sectors of the economy to gauge their confidence now as Covid dominates the market. The message from CEOs: Expect volatility to rule again in 2022. "Almost a year ago, we're all saying goodbye to 2020 ... like good riddance," Welch said. "The sort of the year ahead was going to give us back our visibility into the future, give us back some kind of feeling that the earth was not moving under...
It's a matter of when—and not if—a Tucson police officer who fatally shot a man in a motorized wheelchair will be fired, police officials have said. Ryan Remington, an officer with the Arizona police department for four years, was working a security detail Monday night at a Walmart when he fired nine times at Richard Lee Richards, killing the 61-year-old man suspected of shoplifting and brandishing a knife, according to the Associated Press. Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus announced at a news conference on Tuesday that the officer would be fired. "To be clear, I am deeply disturbed by officer Remingtons' actions. His use of deadly force in this incident is a clear violation of department policy and directly contradicts multiple aspects of our use of force training,” Magnus said. “As a result, the department moved earlier today to terminate officer Remington." Remington, however, can count on the police union to defend his reprehensible actions caught on police body-camera footage. Police have said a Walmart employee told Remington that Richards had taken a toolbox from the Walmart without paying, so the employee and Remington followed Richards...
There are 10 working days between Congress’ just-concluded Thanksgiving recess and winter recess. In that short window, lawmakers are now attempting to follow through with all their promises made throughout the year. Democrats in particular have a long list of priorities they want to accomplish. With an election year on the horizon it’s in their best interest to get things done as quickly as possible. For now, the House and the Senate are only scheduled to be in session through December 10 before packing it up for the rest of the year. But, like many congressional deadlines, the timeline is likely to slip later into the month. Here’s Congress’ list of priorities to finish up before their winter break. Funding the government and raising the debt ceiling The most immediate issue Congress faces is avoiding a government shutdown at the end of the week. The government is set to run out of funding on December 3. A lapse in government funding can lead to furloughs of federal employees and temporarily shutting down some “non-essential” government services. Article continues after advertisement...
Sharks winger Timo Meier avoided what could have been a serious injury Thursday night as his leg collided with that of New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech midway through the third period. Meier, though, stayed in the game and made a key play to help the Sharks pick up another victory away from home. Erik Karlsson scored at the 39-second mark of overtime off an assist from Meier to give the Sharks a 2-1 victory over the Islanders in their first visit to UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. Karlsson and Meier went in on a 2-on-1 into the Islanders’ zone. Karlsson made an initial saucer pass to Meier, who had the puck go off his stick and into behind the Islanders net. But he fed it back to Karlsson, who beat Ilya Sorokin for his fifth goal of the season as the Sharks improved to 3-0-0 on this five-game road trip. Meier also assisted on Nick Bonino’s first-period goal and now has nine points in his last five games. “It was scary actually, seeing Timo...

Getty Joel Embiid #21 of the Philadelphia 76ers. Al Horford’s redemption tour took a personal pitstop on Wednesday, December 2nd when he and the Boston Celtics welcomed the Philadelphia 76ers into town. In many ways, Horford’s abbreviated stint in Philly was the starting point to the “washed” narrative that the veteran big man is currently dispelling. The Sixers inked Horford to a lucrative four-year, $109 million deal back in 2019 with the idea that he’d serve as the perfect complement to Joel Embiid along their frontcourt. Instead, the marriage was doomed almost from the jump. The duo struggled to co-exist, leading to Horford being sent to the bench and ultimately shipped to Oklahoma City. On Wednesday night, Horford reminded Philadelphia of the versatile skill set that originally piqued their interest a few years back. The former No. 3 overall pick was his usual steady self, finishing with 10 points (4-of-6 shooting), eight rebounds and five blocks. His — as well as Robert Williams’ — well-rounded efforts rattled Embiid and Philly’s offense, allowing the Cs to squeak by with...
Getty Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch of the San Francisco 49ers The San Francisco 49ers are playing an unfortunate game of musical chairs at the safety position. On Wednesday, November 30, the Niners signed safety Doug Middleton to round out their practice squad, releasing safety Kai Nacua to make room. However, just a day later San Francisco designated Middleton to the injured reserve list (IR) and resigned Nacua, who has been on and off the team’s active roster over the past two seasons. The Niners initially inked Nacua in November 2020. He appeared in five regular season games for San Francisco last season and has made one appearance this year after reaching an agreement to remain with the team in February. Bella Hadid talked about feeling “empowered in lingerie” now compared to before as she explained why she came back to Victoria’s Secret after the company’s rebranding. “What magnetized me to coming back was them coming to me and really proving to me that, behind the scenes, Victoria’s Secret has changed so drastically,” the 25-year-old Victoria’s Secret model explained to Marie Claire in a piece published Thursday. (SLIDESHOW: These Women On Instagram Hate Wearing Clothes) “There was a type of way that, I think, a lot of us women who used to work with Victoria’s Secret felt,” she added. “And now, six of the seven [VS] board members are all female. Six weeks later, Alec Baldwin claims he still has no idea how he ended up shooting and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his ill-fated Western Rust. The actor spoke out for the first time this week—outside of a heated run-in with paparazzi in Vermont—in an exclusive primetime special with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that aired Thursday night. And in the tearful interview, he denied actually pulling the trigger in the deadly shooting and at the same time described the incident as the “worst thing” that has ever happened to him. He said he is taking solace in the fact that he believes he was not “responsible” for Hutchins’ death and that he might have killed himself had he really felt her death was his fault. Baldwin said he was doing the interview to clear up “misconceptions” around the shooting and that he really felt like he couldn’t “wait” until all of the official law enforcement reports are released months from now. His biggest concern, he said, is that he doesn’t want to “come across like I’m...
