WHILE Americans plan for their holiday spending, some can expect a $285 stimulus check in the weeks surrounding the New Year. Those eligible can expect to receive the one-time "surprise stimulus" payments via postal mail between now and January 21. 1Eligible Maine residents will receive the one-time 'surprise stimulus' of $285 Eligible Maine residents will receive the payments, and can check their eligibility status on the Maine Revenue Service website. In November, Governor Janet Mills signed legislation enacting the Maine Disaster Relief Program, granting $149.8 million for one-time payments to those Maine residents who worked during the pandemic. The funds intend to provide relief and assistance to those impacted by Covid. As a result, a check worth at least $285 will be sent to more than 500,000 eligible workers. The checks started going out in November and will continue through December 31, arriving just in time for the holiday season and the start of the new year. These surprise checks are a follow-up to the last national $1,400 checks sent out in March as part of President Joe Biden's American Rescue Plan. Those who have not received...

However, capital gains taxes may put a damper on their windfall.  Home sales profits are considered capital gains, taxed at federal rates of 0%, 15% or 20% in 2021, depending on income. The IRS offers a write-off for homeowners, allowing single filers to exclude up to $250,000 of profit and married couples filing together can subtract up to $500,000. ZURICH (AP) — New Zealand’s path to the World Cup in Qatar will also start there when the Oceania qualifying tournament that was drawn on Monday is played in the host nation in March. The Oceania games will be closely watched by the United States and Mexico which could yet land in a World Cup playoff next June against the best team from the Pacific region. Qatar was confirmed on Monday by FIFA as the neutral host for the Oceania qualifiers which have been persistently delayed by travel and quarantine restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The March 14-30 schedule for the Pacific region teams “presents the first — and indeed last — opportunity for the preliminary competition to take place,” FIFA said. New Zealand, which previously played at the 2010 and 1982 World Cups, has the region’s most established player in Burnley forward Chris Wood and is strongly favored to win the Oceania tournament. Oceania has no direct entry to the 32-team World Cup. Its qualifying tournament winner earns a playoff game in Qatar on June 13 or 14...

PARENTS are being warned they may have to pay back all the child tax credit cash to the IRS depending on when their child's birthday falls.               more   COLUMBUS, Ohio – Legislation to allow all businesses to qualify as “essential” and have an equal opportunity to remain open during a future public health emergency has passed the Ohio Senate. Unanimous Senate passage on November 16 of Amended House Bill 215 – or the Business Fairness Act – seeks to prevent the wholesale closure of businesses such as smaller Ohio retailers considered “non-essential” under Ohio Health Department’s orders at the onslaught of COVID-19 20 months ago. “House Bill 215 is a fundamental and necessary piece of legislation that seeks to bolster Ohio’s economic recovery, specifically for small businesses, which we all know are the backbone of the state’s economy,” said Ohio State Senator George Lang (R-West Chester) in prepared remarks shared with The Ohio Star. “Specifically, HB 215 permits any business that was required to close or minimize their operations due to State health order to remain open so long as they can demonstrate their ability to meet safety protocols required of businesses that were deemed (in March 2020) essential and were allowed to stay open during...

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — The Netherlands qualified for next year’s World Cup on its second attempt Tuesday by beating Norway 2-0 in an empty De Kuip stadium. Turkey qualified for the playoffs by beating Montenegro 2-1 in Podgorica. Steven Bergwijn finally broke the stalemate in a cagey match in the 84th minute, running onto a pass by Arnaut Danjuma and smashing a powerful shot past Orjan Nyland. In stoppage time, the Tottenham winger surged forward and laid off a pass for Memphis Depay to seal the victory with a shot from a tight angle. LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Aleksandar Mitrovic scored in the 90th minute as Serbia stunned Portugal with a 2-1 win on Sunday to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Qatar, and leave Cristiano Ronaldo in danger of missing out on the tournament after four straight appearances. Mitrovic came off the bench to score the winner with a header after the Portugal defense failed to clear a cross into the area. The 36-year-old Ronaldo complained with his teammates and, after the final whistle, looked desolate as he sat on the field while teammates and opposing players came to console him. Ronaldo is the men’s all-time record-scorer in international soccer with 115 goals. A draw would have been enough for the hosts, with Portugal trying to qualify for the World Cup for the sixth straight time. Instant reaction to Pac-12 developments on and off the field … 1. Sunday in Seattle It has been 713 days since Jimmy Lake was named the head coach of the University of Washington football program. Today could very well be his last. Lake’s one-week suspension for striking a player ends today, so either the administration must reinstate him to the post or announce a permanent separation. All indications are that he will be fired before sunset. (If we had to guess: two or three hours before sunset.) There is no way Lake can return to the job — no way he can credibly lead the program, no way he can properly represent the university — after the self-inflicted damage prior to the suspension. Lake’s fall has been stunningly swift: — Nobody questioned Washington’s decision to elevate him when Chris Petersen announced his resignation on Dec. 2, 2019. At the time, Lake was arguably the hottest coaching candidate in the country. A coordinator coveted by Nick Saban. A  recruiting machine who turned out one NFL defensive back after another. A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Saturday: WORLD CUP QUALIFYING GROUP D Defending champion France can book its place for Qatar if it beats last-placed Kazakhstan at home. Les Bleus will be missing the injured Paul Pogba in midfield so Aurelien Tchouameni or Adrien Rabiot could be handed a start alongside N’Golo Kante at Parc des Princes, where Rabiot used to play for Paris Saint-Germain. Tchouameni has impressed for Monaco and slotted in effortlessly at international level since making his debut two months ago. But Rabiot’s form has been patchy for a below-par Juventus this season. However, France is heavy favorite to win the group. In the other game, Bosnia and Herzegovina hosts Finland with an afternoon kickoff in Zenica. SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil is the first South American team to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar — with several matches in hand and more than a year before the tournament begins in Qatar. Lucas Paquetá scored Brazil’s only goal in the 72nd minute in a 1-0 win over Colombia, putting the Seleção 18 points ahead of fourth-place Chile, which can add only 15 points from its five remaining matches. Sixth-place Uruguay can still total Brazil’s 34 points, but it will face Chile in the last round of qualifying, which makes it mathematically impossible for both of them to overtake the leader. The top four teams in South America earn direct entry to the World Cup. Also on Thursday, third-place Ecuador beat last-place Venezuela 1-0 with a goal by Piero Hincapié and Chile had a key 1-0 victory at Paraguay thanks to an own goal by Antony Silva after a corner kick. Peru and Bolivia will face off later Thursday. Uruguay will host Argentina on Friday. Brazil has 11 wins in 12 matches — its match...

MORE than half a million Americans will start getting a one-time check of $285 from this Monday, November 15. The people receiving the checks live in the state of Maine. 1More than 500,000 Americans will be getting a disaster relief payment It's part of budget deal passed by the Maine State Legislature to help people who worked during the pandemic in 2020. Governor Janet Mills said 524,754 working Maine people will receive a disaster relief payment of $285. Mrs Mills said it's a one-time payment and a thank you to those who worked during the pandemic. Under the Disaster Relief Payment Program, the State Tax Assessor was required to identify each eligible Maine citizen, and then determine the payment amount, up to a maximum of $300. The number came from dividing the amount of the funds available by the total number of eligible Maine citizens, including the estimated number of unidentified eligible Maine citizens. The allocated funding of $149.8million divided by the 524,754 individuals would result in a payment amount of $285.46. Most read in moneyPRETTY PENNY Lincoln Penny...
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The Kenyan soccer federation was disbanded by the government on Thursday just hours before the national team was due to play in a World Cup qualifier. The move was announced by sports minister Amina Mohamed, who said a preliminary investigation into the soccer federation by her department had shown it was unable to properly account for money given to it by the government. Mohamed said police and anti-corruption authorities in Kenya should now carry out further investigations and decide if there should be criminal prosecutions. The decision to remove all elected officials at the federation and replace them with a caretaker committee will not affect Kenya’s international matches, the sports ministry said. But that may still happen if world body FIFA becomes involved. FIFA does not allow governments to interfere in the running of national federations and Kenya risks being banned from international soccer. Kenya was due to play Uganda in a World Cup qualifier later Thursday, although Kenya has already been eliminated and cannot qualify for next year’s tournament in Qatar. Kenya also failed to...

CRISTIANO RONALDO could ask to leave Manchester United if they don't qualify for next season's Champions League, according to reports. United sit two places and five points outside the top four and if their fortunes don't transform, they could lose their talisman at the end of the season. 1Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Man Utd at the end of the season if they do not qualify for the Champions LeagueCredit: EPA Ronaldo has saved the day with dramatic late goals on several occasions this season since his summer switch from Juventus. But the superstar's heroics alone have not been enough to stop the Reds from losing six of their last 12 with the pressure mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And if they finish outside the top four and fail to win the Champions League, United could be playing in either of the Europa competitions next season, or worse, no European football at all. If United are absent from Uefa's flagship tournament, Ronaldo, 36, could look to quit Old Trafford, according to the Express. Ronnie has scored nine goals in 12 games...
Travis Scott Astroworld show: Survivors recall scenes of chaos at the concert Progressive coalition retools ahead of 2022 After November's World Cup qualifiers, there will be just two final windows in January and March 2022 that will determine which three lucky nations from the CONCACAF region (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) will head to Qatar for the World Cup next November. The U.S. men's national team would prefer to enter those final sets of matches with a little breathing room so that a repeat of 2018 does not occur. That's when the USMNT managed to lose at home to Costa Rica and fell on the road to already-eliminated Trinidad & Tobago on the final day. Those two results ultimately eliminated the Americans from the 2018 World Cup in Russia. After qualifying for the previous seven FIFA World Cups, it felt like a foregone conclusion the U.S. would always make it to the big dance. But the humbling lesson that 2018 taught fans and players alike is that the slightest misstep in qualifying could bring about devastating consequences,...

Only Germany and Denmark have claimed places in Europe’s 13-team quota in the 32-nation World Cup lineup before the qualifiers resume Thursday. Eight more will be known by Tuesday. A look at what to watch out for: SUPER SUNDAY Sunday’s match list is a rebuttal to those who say qualification has too little drama or jeopardy. Three groups are set to be decided when the top two teams meet in a last-game showdown. Winners will go to Qatar and losers head for the playoffs in March, needing to get past two more opponents to qualify. The action Sunday starts at 14:00 GMT with a rematch from the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals: Croatia hosts Russia in Split. Russia has a two-point lead in the group going into Thursday’s games when it hosts Cyprus and Croatia visits Malta. At 19:45 GMT, 2010 World Cup winner Spain and...

A law that gives Coloradans the right to kill intruders in their homes will face a new test before the state’s Supreme Court in a case that stems from a fatal shooting in an apartment building’s basement. Colorado Springs renter Patrick Rau, 29, was charged with second-degree murder after he shot and killed a man who was sleeping in the basement of the building where Rau lived — a former single-family home that had been divided into seven apartments. Colorado’s courts have so far cleared him of wrongdoing, finding he was protected by the state’s “Make My Day” law, which says residents can shoot and kill intruders in their homes if they believe the person intends to use physical force. The Colorado Supreme Court is considering the case Monday after an appeal from prosecutors who argue that the law should not apply to Rau’s case because he was in a common area of the building — the basement wasn’t part of his actual home, they say. The law specifically excludes yards, driveways, porches and detached garages. Rau’s attorney, Timothy...

NEARLY half a million stimulus check payments have just been sent out by the IRS. The payments stem from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan and are IRS unemployment tax refunds.  2Almost half a million payments were sent out by the IRSCredit: Getty The 430,000 payments total more than $510million to taxpayers. The payments are being sent out because many Americans filed their 2020 taxes before the stimulus law was passed back in March. Because of this, the IRS began looking through completed returns for people who were overpaid. “Earlier this year, the IRS began its review of tax returns filed prior to the enactment of ARPA to identify the excludable unemployment compensation,” said the IRS in a statement. “To date, the IRS has issued over 11.7 million refunds totaling $14.4 billion.” The refunds average around $1,189 per person and another batch of corrections are being planned to release before the end of 2021. However, there is still a mathematical chance that India could advance to the last four. How can India qualify for the T20 World Cup semi-final? MUNICH (AP) — After two weeks without a coach and falling to a disastrous defeat, Bayern Munich is back to its usual winning ways. The German champion booked its place in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday as Robert Lewandowski scored a hat trick for a 5-2 victory over Benfica to extend Bayern’s perfect record of four wins from four in the group stage. That took Lewandowski to 81 career goals in his 100th Champions League game. The game marked the return of Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann after four games away — including the return 4-0 win over Benfica in Portugal — after he tested positive for the coronavirus. During Nagelsmann’s absence, Bayern’s previously reliable defense collapsed in a 5-0 German Cup loss at Borussia Mönchengladbach last week, the club’s worst result in more than 40 years. Against Benfica there were some signs of that sloppiness as poor marking early on allowed Benfica to score a goal narrowly ruled out for offside. It happened again when Bayern failed to deal with a free kick that led to Benfica defender...

With 2021 winding down, it’s time for millions of Americans to sign up for health insurance for 2022. And for Californians who can’t get coverage through Medicare, Medi-Cal or an employer’s health plan, the good news is that expanded federal subsidies will make next year’s policies more affordable for more people than they were a year ago. Monday marks the first day of open enrollment at Covered California, the insurance marketplace that the 2010 Affordable Care Act created for people who aren’t covered by a group health plan. You can sign up online, over the phone or through one of the dozens of offices in Southern California staffed by insurance “navigators.” If you’d like to work with a navigator, call that office before visiting — the pandemic has led many of them to limit in-person contact. Remember, under California law, adults are required to maintain health insurance coverage, with limited exceptions. That’s true regardless of whether you have access to a health plan at work. Failing to obtain coverage can result in a tax penalty of hundreds to thousands of...
