With a final score of 20-19, the game was decided on a failed two-point conversion that would’ve given Baltimore the lead. The ensuing two-point conversion had a wide-open Mark Andrews, but the pass was just out of reach. Although they dropped to third, the Ravens are still leading the AFC North by one game. Buck O’Neil, who spent most of his life as a tireless advocate for the Negro Leagues, will finally be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022. More than seven decades have passed since John “Buck” O’Neil last played a game in organized baseball. Nearly 60 years have passed since he coached in the Majors. He died 15 years ago after spending his entire 94 years devoted to the game of baseball. O’Neil wasn’t the best baseball player. At a time when the door to the Majors was denied to men of his skin color, what counts as official Negro League statistics assign him a .258 average and nine home runs. O’Neil himself insisted that, in the haphazard way such statistics were kept, he was actually a .300 hitter. But, if the Negro Leagues are mentioned today, Buck’s smiling face is likely the first image that comes to mind. He was the consummate storyteller, recalling days when he played with Satchel Paige and against Josh Gibson. For most of his life, nobody listened. That...
San Francisco 49ers running back Trenton Cannon was involved in a scary incident on Sunday during a game against the Seattle Seahawks. On the opening kickoff, Cannon tried to make a tackle on Seahawks player DeeJay Dallas and was injured. He was taken off the field on a backboard and immediately placed into the back of an ambulance. The 49ers’ training staff immediately rushed onto the field after the play was over. Though cold and miserable Chicago weather certainly isn’t news to anyone, the freezing rain and gusty temperatures Sunday at Soldier Field had some Bears fans dreaming about a new stadium outside the city. In September, the Bears signed a $197.2 million purchase agreement for Arlington International Racecourse, a move that takes the team a step closer toward securing property for a new stadium in Arlington Heights and leaving their longtime home near downtown Chicago. Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals didn’t near any records, but fans sat through freezing rain and biting winds, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest recorded Bears game was in 2008, when temperatures hit 2 degrees. No plans have been officially announced for a new stadium, but many fans on Twitter talked about the possibility that it would come with a roof to block out the snow and rain that sometimes pummels players and fans at Soldier Field. The majority of NFL stadiums are open-air, but a number of newer stadiums are equipped with fixed or retractable roofs. “I hope...
Getty New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson made major strides during the Week 13 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. The New York Jets were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13 but there were some clear positives to focus on. Namely, rookie quarterback Zach Wilson looked extremely comfortable in Mike LaFleur’s system for the first time since Week 4. You could actually argue that the BYU product was better today, even if there weren’t as many spectacular throws. Wilson showed something else, something fans had not seen since preseason, poise and composure. ALL the latest Jets news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Jets newsletter here! Large sections of seats sat empty as the clock ticked down Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field, with fans fleeing not only the cold, rainy weather but also another miserable Chicago Bears loss. As Bears rookie Justin Fields sat out with broken ribs, veteran Andy Dalton threw four interceptions on the way to a 33-22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals scored three touchdowns and made a field goal on the drives following the interceptions, including touchdowns after picks on the Bears’ first two drives. The result was the Bears sixth loss in seven games and eighth overall. While the Cardinals welcomed back quarterback Kyler Murray and top wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from injuries, the 4-8 Bears were missing multiple stars, including Fields, who was not medically cleared to play after being limited in practice all week. Outside linebacker Khalil Mack is out for the season. Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks and wide receiver Allen Robinson missed their third straight games with injuries. Those absences made an upset of the now 10-2 Cardinals an unlikely dream. ...
The Detroit Lions finally found a victory when Jared Goff threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown as time expired, lifting the previously winless team to a 29-27 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Not only was the finish dramatic, it was stunning. Goff led the Lions on a decisive 75-yard possession without a timeout after Kirk Cousins threw a go-ahead, 3-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson with 1:50 left. The Vikings failed on a 2-point conversion for the third time; those missed opportunities proved costly. Goff threw two touchdown passes in the first half to put the Lions ahead by 14, their biggest lead this season. Then he turned over the ball twice in the second half to help the Vikings rally. He came through in the end, leading the long drive and delivering a sharp pass to St. Brown, who took advantage of the Vikings secondary playing too deep in the end zone. The Lions (1-10-1) ended a 15-game winless streak that lasted 364 days since winning last season in Chicago,...

The Green Bay Packers received a monumental boost on their bye week, with the Vikings and Bears losing. The Packers are going to win the NFC North, that much is obvious. They’re the only team above .500 in the division, and they’re only a game behind the Arizona Cardinals for top record in the conference. Yet, the purpose of this article is not just to state the obvious to Packers fans, but let them know the soonest possible date they could clinch the division. Green Bay has a four-game lead with five left to play. Having lost their only game against the Vikings so far, Minnesota has that matchup in hand for now. NFC North: How soon can Packers clinch?Four weeks from now, the Packers play host to the Vikings at Lambeau Field. It’s their second and final matchup against Minnesota this season, and it’s both teams’ second-to-last game of the year. If the Packers haven’t clinched by then, somehow, then surely that will be a last stand of sorts. But the soonest they can clinch is next week, actually....
The Chicago Bears are going nowhere fast and they should do Matt Nagy a favor by putting him out of his misery. The writing is on the wall for Chicago Bears’ head coach Matt Nagy, who will certainly be fired as soon as the season concludes. Chicago fell to the Arizona Cardinals 33-22 this afternoon to drop to 4-8 on the season, making a long-shot playoff berth even more unlikely than it was at the start of Week 13. There were reports prior to the Bears’ Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions that Nagy was going to be fired after that contest only for the organization to quickly refute them. Chicago has never fired a coach in-season, a tradition they would break by firing Nagy now, but it seems silly to prolong his tenure any further at this point. Why firing Matt Nagy now makes sense for the BearsThings could get ugly quick for Nagy with the Bears set to renew the NFL’s oldest rivalry on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers, who will be coming off a...

The more things look to be changing for the Cincinnati Bengals, the more things seem to be staying the same. Check on your local Cincinnati Bengals fan this week. All five of them are in agony after this sequence. After letting the Los Angeles Chargers score 24 unanswered points, the Bengals were finally able to drive the field and put the ball in the end zone. Seeing the opportunity to play a two-possession game and not a three-possession game, Zac Taylor sent Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ offense out for two points. This decision was not made quickly and ended up draining the play clock, forcing the Bengals to take a timeout to avoid a delay of game. Then things get very Bengals indeed as the offense gets back on the field after the timeout with only 15 seconds left on the play clock. They hurry to the line, Burrow spends way too long correcting the coverage and the Bengals end up taking a delay of game penalty anyways. This cost the Bengals a timeout, a shot at cutting the...

The Latest from Week 13 of the NFL (all times EST): ___ 11:50 a.m. Gardner Minshew is starting at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Jets in place of the injured Jalen Hurts. Hurts was limited in practice all week with a sprained ankle, but insisted he would be ready to play Sunday. Coach Nick Sirianni opted to instead play it safe and start Minshew, who has thrown two passes this season for the Eagles. Hurts was inactive for the game, so Reid Stinnett will serve as Minshew’s backup. Hurts was injured in Philadelphia’s 13-7 loss against the Giants last Sunday, when the second-year quarterback had his worst game as a pro with three interceptions. His ankle was stepped on in the second half, but he remained in the game. Hurts’ mobility is a major part of his game, so playing on a sprained ankle is an issue. He’s the Eagles’ leading rusher with 695 yards on 122 carries and has rushed for at least 50 yards in the Eagles’ past six games — the franchise’s first...

Getty DeMar DeRozan (left) and Zach LaVine of the Bulls. A few weeks ago, Alex Caruso was talking about the two players—DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine—who have emerged as clear All-Stars for the Chicago Bulls, each of whom could make a case for being in the NBA MVP conversation. And what Caruso foresaw even then has turned out to be one of the keys to the Bulls’ surge toward the top of the East, which took another step on Saturday with their win: their unselfishness. “Them being so low-maintenance and unselfish as the best players on the team, that’s hard to find in the NBA,” Caruso said on J.J. After moving past rumors about coach Matt Nagy’s job status, the Chicago Bears had a week of relative peace following their Thanksgiving win against the Detroit Lions. Now the 9-2 Arizona Cardinals come to town to try to disturb that calm. The Cardinals had extra time to prepare for the Bears coming off their bye week. They opened the season with seven straight victories before going 2-2 in their last four games, including 2-1 without quarterback Kyler Murray. Murray, who had a left ankle injury, could return Sunday after coach Kliff Kingsbury deemed him a game-day decision. The Bears, however, won’t have starting quarterback Justin Fields, who isn’t medically ready to return from broken ribs. Bears coach Matt Nagy named veteran Andy Dalton the starter for the second straight game. Dalton led the Bears to a 16-14 comeback victory over the Lions on Thanksgiving but will have a tougher test against one of the NFL’s top defenses. “We’ve got to be consistent with what we’re doing,” Dalton said. “To have that last drive (against...
    1. BE COMPETENT ON OFFENSE The Giants’ defense actually should generate a disruptive pass rush against a poor Dolphins offensive line. But the Giants can’t win this game if the offense doesn’t score touchdowns. That will be tough with Mike Glennon facing a blitz-happy Fins D. 2. SCORE ON DEFENSE Tua Tagovailoa’s Dolphins offense has 20 giveaways, tied for fourth-worst in the NFL. The Giants defense’s 19 takeaways are tied for seventh best. Pat Graham’s defense has forced at least one turnover in every game. Maybe Xavier McKinney can get another pick-six. 3. RUN THE BALL Devontae Booker should play more. Saquon Barkley has to play better. Freddie Kitchens needs to call effective runs. It’s the only way to protect the offensive line and the quarterback against a Dolphins team that’s won four straight.
    1. CONTAIN THE RUN Initially, I thought about writing “stop the run,” but the Jets have the 27th-ranked rushing defense. The Eagles are averaging 158 yards rushing, best in the NFL. They run a similar scheme as the Colts, who ran for 260 yards against the Jets on TNF in Week 9. The Jets are probably going to be without Sheldon Rankins, who’s dealing with a knee injury. But the Jets have to contain the rushing attack to have a shot to win two games in a row. 2. GET ZACH GOING EARLIER Wilson has thrown zero TDs in the first half with seven interceptions and is completing 49% of his passes. It’s mind-blogging that he’s struggling like this in the early portions of the game. In the second half, he has five total touchdowns and only three INTs. He’s a much different quarterback after the break and the Jets need that version to show up earlier. 3. CONTINUE TO RUN THE BALL Against the Texans, the Jets rushed for 157 yards with two TDs. That’s a...

Instant reaction to Pac-12 developments on and off the field … 1. What. A. Week. The 14th and final week of the regular season won’t end well for the Pac-12. For the fifth consecutive year, the conference will miss the College Football Playoff and all the trappings, cash and recruiting benefits that go with it. But make no mistake: This was a hugely successful week for the Pac-12 on multiple fronts — each of which increases the probability of future success. The headliner move, of course, was USC luring away Lincoln Riley. The stunning hire instantly transformed the trajectory of the Pac-12’s lone blue blood program and provided the entire conference with desperately-needed energy and star power. But there were important, albeit lower-profile, decisions made in Seattle, Pullman and Corvallis: — Washington hired Kalen DeBoer away from Fresno State, a low-wattage move compared to USC but a smart one nonetheless. In fact, two deeply trusted Hotline sources sent unsolicited text messages to us this week praising UW’s decision and predicting DeBoer would prove...
Jim Harbaugh has had to deal with so many expectations since becoming head coach at Michigan, and his reaction to clinching a playoff berth is pure joy.  No coach in college football has gone through as much criticism over his tenure as a head coach as Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. Ohio State failed to make the Big Ten Championship Game but, with Michigan and Iowa battling, someone still wanted the Buckeyes to be involved, clearly. Because Michigan thoroughly manhandled the Ohio State Buckeyes last week in The Game, it was the Wolverines that pushed through to the Big Ten Championship Game for a matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes were the West division champions and earned their spot but, as any college football fan will tell you, they aren’t exactly on the same planet in terms of notoriety when compared to Ohio State and Michigan. The Baylor Bears are Big 12 champions. Could they also find a way to sneak into the College Football Playoff? If things play out right, yes. Baylor looked like they would roll to the Big 12 title early against Oklahoma State. Instead, it came down to the wire as the Bears held on for dear life and the conference championship. How Baylor can make the College Football PlayoffThe Bears are part of a pack of two-loss teams with hopes of making it into a semifinal game. It’ll take a nearly-perfect scenario for them to make it. First, Georgia needs to blow out Alabama and eliminate them completely from contention,...
The Sharks had mixed feelings about where they stood after the first 20 games of the season. They were doing enough good things to earn 10 wins but were also aware that they couldn’t hover around a .500 points percentage for much longer and still hope to remain in the playoff hunt. Clearly, they knew the importance of the five-game road trip they were about to begin — and they’ve responded in kind. The Sharks have won three of four games this week and sat in a playoff position before the start of Saturday’s NHL games. The Sharks (13-10-1) finish the trip Sunday in Columbus against the Blue Jackets and have a chance to maintain this momentum before they begin a seven-game homestand next week. “We had a quarter-way through the season kind of team meeting to discuss where we’re at and where we needed to be going into the Christmas break if we’re going to give ourselves a chance to make a run in the second half,” Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. “Putting ourselves in...
The Ohio State Buckeyes still have a very slim hope of making the College Football Playoff if chaos reigns in conference championship games. When Michigan beat Ohio State, the Buckeyes had their College Football Playoff hopes essentially dashed. The likelihood of Ohio State making it into the Top 4 teams with two losses and no Big Ten title was exceedingly low. The one thing college football likes to deliver is chaos. And, as they say, chaos is a ladder. Ohio State playoff chances are slim but still possibleThere are seven teams ahead of Ohio State in the CFP rankings and only four spots in the playoff. The Buckeyes need just about everything to go their way. First, they need Georgia to utterly demolish Alabama. It wouldn’t be enough for the Crimson Tide to lose in the SEC Championship Game because they could get in as a two-loss non-conference title winner over Ohio State. Next, Ryan Day and Ohio State need to be big fans of Michigan on Saturday. The Wolverines need to assert their dominance over Iowa and establish themselves...

It led to three-game suspension by the league and $161,764 in lost pay and $158,823 in bonuses according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “I knew the card was fake already because he had already mentioned to me that he had gotten it. Draymond Green wasn’t very good the first time the Warriors and the Suns played this week. So Friday night at Chase Center, he was the best player on the court for Golden State in one of the Dubs’ most impressive wins of this exceptionally impressive season. By now you should know that the box score cannot possibly encapsulate everything that Green does to affect winning on the basketball court, and Friday night’s 118-96 win was the perfect example — though the box score numbers looked pretty good. Green showed, once again, why the Warriors dominated the Western Conference for half a decade and why they could again be the favorites after a two-year playoff hiatus. There are only so many times you can bring up the past. That’s the case for Georgia this week, as they prepare for Alabama and the SEC Championship on Saturday. We can go back to the previous years and try to figure out whether past games will have any bearing on future performances, but make no mistake, these Dawgs are looking to finish what they’ve started. We all remember the 2018 national championship game when Georgia had backed up Alabama to a second and forever, only to see Tua Tagovailoa hit a bomb down the left sideline for a touchdown, and just like that, the Dawgs’ season was finished. Here’s a look at how the Miami Dolphins (5-7) and New York Giants (4-7) match up in six key areas ahead of Sunday’s Week 13 game at Hard Rock Stadium (1 p.m., FOX): When the Dolphins run: The Dolphins are at least starting to utilize the run game enough where opponents have to respect it, which wasn’t previously the case. They had 33 and 39 rushing plays in the past two wins over the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, respectively. Their yards-per-carry averages in those two games: 3.5 and 2.8. So, that could still use some work, but combined with an efficient short passing game, it’s been good enough. Miami is still No. 31 in the NFL in rushing offense, with Myles Gaskin’s 482 rushing yards at 3.5 yards per carry leading the way. Maybe the addition of veteran former Pro Bowl back Phillip Lindsay starts to bring a spark. He already carried 12 times for 42 yards in his Dolphins’ debut off just one practice, one walkthrough and some additional work. The Giants are 26th...

(CNN)On October 5, 2013, Adnan Januzaj made his mark in a big way. In what was his first league start for Manchester United, the slight youngster scored two goals in a dramatic comeback against Sunderland -- his second a stunning left-foot volley. It was a special performance that got fans excited and hopeful that the club had unearthed yet another major talent in the game. For the player himself, it kick-started a promising breakthrough season for the then 18-year-old; Januzaj scored four league goals in 27 appearances in a side struggling for identity in the post-Alex Ferguson era. His good form, trickiness and eye for the spectacular were rewarded with a bumper five-year deal but things quickly began to change. Read MoreUnited sacked David Moyes -- someone Januzaj rates highly as both a coach and person -- in 2014 and new manager Louis Van Gaal started using the youngster more sparingly. Loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland did little to boost his reputation at the club, and he eventually was sold to Real Sociedad by then United manager Jose...

(East Rutherford) New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will miss the Miami Dolphins on Sunday due to a neck injury. Released December 1, 2021 at 1:38 pm. Tom Canavan Associated Press Head coach Joe Judge confirmed Jones’ absence on Friday after team doctors told him he had not been given the green light to receive his young quarterback punches. “I know it’s frustrating for him, but I think it’s best for him,” Judge Jones said. The judge declined to comment on the injury. The decision only affected Sunday’s game, but Jones could not say when he would receive the green light. Senior Mike Glenn will make his debut for the Giants (4-7). In the halfway point against the Dallas Cowboys on October 10, he was appointed to replace Jones, who suffered a concussion. He finished with 16 passes in 25 attempts for 196 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. This is his first start with the Giants. Late last season, Glenn started five games with the Jaguars in Jacksonville....
LAS VEGAS — The head of Pac-12 football operations on Friday offered a largely positive assessment of the conference’s officiating performance in 2021. “We have work to do, but this is not the same unit it was a few years ago,” said Merton Hanks, who is completing his second season as the senior associate commissioner for football operations. “We are not the same.” Hanks has not taken a deep dive into the officiating analytics — that process will unfold over the winter — but he offered two data points and several opinions on the state of officiating prior to the Pac-12 championship game at Allegiant Stadium. Hanks joined the conference in Sept. 2020 and spent the bulk of his first fall navigating the COVID disruptions. But this season unfolded smoothly, with no games affected by wildfire smoke and only one (Cal-USC) impacted by COVID. That allowed Hanks and his deputy, associate commissioner for football operations Shonna Brown, to focus on the traditional responsibilities, with officiating a key component. Although there were numerous instances of questionable calls and irate coaches, Pac-12...

BERKELEY — Cal will say goodbye to 28 seniors prior to Saturday night’s season finale against USC at Memorial Stadium. Fans probably haven’t seen the last of all of them. The Bears and Trojans bring identical records into their first season-ending matchup since 1918: 4-7 overall, 3-5 in Pac-12. Neither team will play in a bowl game. USC will return next season with a new coach when Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley takes the reins. Who comes back to Berkeley is a question focusing on players who still can utilize the extra season of eligibility the NCAA gave to all athletes impacted last year by the COVID-19 pandemic. Among those with the option are some significant players, starting with quarterback Chase Garbers, who will start for the 34th time in his career Saturday and has an 18-11 record when he plays more than half the game. Other seniors eligible to return include running back Christopher Brooks, wide receiver Nikko Remigio, safety Daniel Scott and outside linebacker Kuony Deng, who will miss his 10th straight game with...
AS the saying goes, you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper... and these No1's have provided us with some eccentric moments. In between the sticks for Manchester United, David De Gea conceded the most bizarre goal against Arsenal, when his own team mate Fred trod on his heel, leaving him on the deck as Emile Smith Rowe volleyed in from the edge of the area. 9David De Gea lays on the floor after being injured by his own player in Man Utd's game against ArsenalCredit: AP 9Earlier, De Gea was trod on by his own team mate Fred The controversial goal was allowed to stand with referee Martin Atkinson failing to blow the whistle before the ball crossed the line to stop play. By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Tom Brady, as you surely know, is 44 years old, still playing at an MVP level, hell-bent on winning another Super Bowl, with no desire at all to stop playing football. It’s fascinating, then, to consider a reflection from Brady that he shares in the upcoming episode of his documentary series, “Man In The Arena.” The fourth installment of the series goes deep on the Patriots’ 2007 season. That year, obviously, the Patriots made NFL history by going 16-0 in the regular season but fell short of completing the undefeated season by losing to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII. While the episode of the series won’t debut until next week, NESN’s Zack Cox got an early look at the episode, and he shared a fascinating quote from Brady that creates an alternate universe where football history is completely rewritten. Here’s what Brady said: “Had we won that game, I don’t know, I’m not a big hypothetical guy, but maybe the desire is a little bit different, if you’re looking at a silver...
