The 49ers’ three-game winning streak came crashing down Sunday in Seattle as penalties doomed them to a 30-23 loss to the Seahawks. A fumble recovery at their own 2-yard line with just over four minutes remaining gave the Niners a chance at a tying the game or attempting to win it, but after marching more than 90 yards, Jimmy Garoppolo’s fourth-and-goal pass attempt was batted down with 15 seconds left to seal the game. Here’s what the 49ers had to say after the loss: Kyle Shanahan On Trenton Cannon’s head injury: Concussions are very concerning, but all the stuff you’re really worried about, he’s cleared. On his team’s performance: We’re all very disappointed, very frustrated, you know. We felt we had a lot of self-inflicted stuff that I always see as caused by their team so I’m not taking anything away from them. But we we had that opportunity at the beginning of the game to kind of … just really felt like we were ready to go and, you know, giving them...
DENVER (CBS4) – Thousands of kids are in foster care every year in our state, and foster parents open their hearts, giving them a safe place to call home. Christie and Maggie Duffy, are an incredible example. “We started fostering about four months after we got married,” Christie Duffy said. “And up until today, we have had 43 kids in and out of our doors.” READ MORE: Firefighters Responding To The West Ranch Fire In Jefferson County (credit: CBS) Right now, the Duffy house has 10 kids under their roof. Two are foster children, and eight are kids they have ended up adopting through the system. “I think they’re getting to the point where they’re like ‘oh boy, we have a really big family,’” the couple said, laughing. Fostering was something the two were always interested in. They had friends in California who did it, and the Duffy’s say it was an incredible experience to witness. Plus, the two wanted to give parenting a try before they decided to have kids of their own, or adopt. “We were always...
China's military is on pace to become a 'peer competitor' to the United States' armed forces as the country moves to amass nuclear weapons at 'breakneck' speed,  Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned on Saturday. However he also downplayed the possibility of a new Cold War and emphasized diplomacy and deterrence as the US strategy to compete with the growing economic powerhouse.  Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California, the Pentagon chief devoted much of his nearly hour-long appearance to discussing 'an increasingly assertive and autocratic' China's efforts to upend US dominance in the global order. Part of that threat includes a goal to amass a thousand nuclear warheads in its arsenal by the end of the decade, Austin said.  'We’ve seen two decades of breakneck modernization by the People’s Liberation Army,' he said, referencing the Chinese military. 'And China’s military is on pace to become a peer competitor to the United States in Asia - and, eventually, around the world.'  In addition to building up its nuclear arsenal Austin said China is making rapid advancements in outer space...
Why do I always feel such nausea when I wake up? A few months ago I started to wake up feeling sick, and this lasted about an hour before passing. More recently, I've been suffering the same nausea intermittently during the day.  My GP ordered blood tests, but these came back normal. The GP is now stumped. Any ideas? I can't emphasise enough that any new and persistent symptom, particularly if you're over 50, should always be explored thoroughly by a doctor. For most people, nausea is a transient symptom lasting only a few days. It is not usual to feel nauseated every morning and regularly through the day. Blood tests give us a general overview of health and can sometimes point to serious causes, but they do not provide a complete picture. Regular nausea could be caused by acid reflux, gastritis, migraine, anxiety or, much more rarely, pancreatic cancer. None of these would necessarily be flagged up in a routine blood test. DR ELLIE CANNON: I can't emphasise enough that any new and persistent symptom, particularly if you're over...

LAS VEGAS — The Pac-12 will announce its postseason award winners and the all-conference team on Tuesday, following voting that will take place over the weekend. Our selections will be published in this space on Monday. But before we offer a list of 40-something names, here’s a more select group: The Hotline’s picks for the 10 best players in the Pac-12 this season, regardless of position, statistics, team success, draft stock, games played, etc. The best of the best, in our opinion. 1. Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd: Fitting that he made the biggest play in the championship game (a Pick Six that gave Utah a 14-0 lead) because Lloyd made big plays — small ones, too — throughout the season. Always around the ball. Always a physical presence. Played the position as well as anyone has played it in years in this conference. 2. USC receiver Drake London: Was the best player in the Pac-12, and perhaps the country, while healthy. But he missed the final four games and has been downgraded on our list as a result — all...

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger knew what was coming. Call it the byproduct of nearly two decades spent in the familiar rhythms of an NFL season. So before the question was even finished about the importance of Sunday’s visit by AFC North-leading Baltimore, the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback plunged into the answer. READ MORE: Charging Documents Say Evelyn Player Died Defending Herself, Police Found Suspect Through DNA“(Is this) a must-win? Is that what you were gonna ask?” Roethlisberger said this week. “It is. Everything moving forward has to be that way. That’s the hole we’ve kind of put ourselves in, that every game has to be the most important game of the year.” None, perhaps, more important than this. The four-game winning streak that thrust the Steelers (5-5-1) back into the mix is now a distant memory. Three mostly listless weeks that include a tie with still winless Detroit and getting crushed in Cincinnati will do that. “There’s a number of times where we’re falling short and to acknowledge that is huge,” defensive end Cam Heyward said. “But to learn...
“Try and anticipate the needs of Mr. Epstein, Ms. Maxwell and their guests.” “Do not discuss personal problems with guests.” “Unobtrusive is the key.” “SMILE!” “NEVER disclose Mr. Epstein or Ms. Maxwell’s activities or whereabouts to anyone.” “Remember that you see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing, except to answer a question directed at you. Respect their privacy.” So read the “household manual” for late sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion. Its ominous commands were exposed on Thursday during the criminal trial of Epstein’s alleged accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell—who stands accused of grooming and abusing girls as young as 14 for him in the 1990s and early 2000s. On Thursday, Epstein’s former butler Juan Alessi testified that Maxwell handed him the booklet in the last year of his employment and that “it was very degrading to me.” Alessi called the employee document “unbelievable,” and said it contained instructions for staff on how to address Epstein and Maxwell (never with their hands in their pockets, never while chewing gum) and what they must wear—“Dark blue trousers with white golf shirts to be...

"Honduran asylum seeker Sandra Sanchez and her baby Yanela were separated for 18 days by the previous administration. "Photographs of Yanela crying as she and her mother were taken into custody at the U.S.-Mexico border on June 12, 2018 were widely published during the Trump administration’s 'zero-tolerance' immigration policy. Sandra Sanchez said that she and Yanela were initially held by U.S. immigration authorities for 18 days in three separate Texas detention facilities before being released pending an immigration court date." While it had always been clear that the previous administration’s family separation policy at the southern border would result in enduring trauma, the first-ever qualitative analysis of the mental health effects of the “zero tolerance” policy has confirmed it in black and white. This new study, released by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), has found that children who were kidnapped from their parents by the previous administration continued to meet criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) a year after reunification. One child, an 8-year-old boy, continued to meet criteria for PTSD, as well as separation anxiety disorder, two years after reunification.  The study findings, published in the peer-reviewed PLOS...
Many graduates of Camden's Woodrow Wilson High School are stunned by the fact their alma mater will soon be going by a different name. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden was referring to former President Donald Trump's tweets when he called Trump 'xenophobic' on the heels of Trump implementing the travel ban last year with China.  'What the president was critical of was the way that the former president put out, I believe, a xenophobic tweet and what he called the coronavirus and who he directed it at,' Psaki said at Monday's press briefing. 'The president has not been critical of travel restrictions, we have put those in place ourselves in the spring,' she added.   Psaki was responding to Fox News' Peter Doocy, who also asked her why the president was spotted maskless while out shopping in Nantucket this weekend.   'The president is somebody who follows the recommendations and the advice of the CDC,' Psaki said. 'I don't know what the circumstances were at that particular moment.' Doocy first pounced on comments Biden made in the past, which could make him look like a hypocrite for his decision this weekend to bar entry to most travelers from eight African countries,...

After defeating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, the New York Giants trolled their division rivals by playing a specific television theme song. The Philadelphia Eagles had the opportunity to gain ground on the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. All they had to do was beat the New York Giants, who were coming off a dud performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Instead, it was the Eagles who laid an egg, as they lost to the Giants 13-7 on Sunday. How could things get more humiliating for the Eagles, you ask? Well, the Giants played the theme song of the hit television show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as Eagles fans left MetLife Stadium. Red letter boxes are as iconic as red phone boxes in the UK. During the Victorian period, architect John Benfold created the “pillar” letterbox, in a hexagonal pattern and in green. Since 1866, this street furniture has been established throughout the country but also in the Commonwealth states, i.e. the former colonies of the United Kingdom: Ireland, India, Cyprus, Malta, Hong Kong, New Zealand or Gibraltar and Sri Lanka. But since 1874, Benfold Letterbox Begins to see red. The letterboxes are gradually repainted in the same color Double Talkers Londoners, with only one hundred and fifty of these green pillars remaining today, are scattered around the world. According to some, the boxes were repainted in red to make them more visible and encourage their use. For others, this color will allow city dwellers to stop attacking them as they walk. I was torn between dating a hipster guy from the inner west or a surfy guy from the beaches. It was all very dramatic, and in retrospect, silly.  I didn’t like either of them that much, I just liked the drama. Another co-worker interjected with the question. “I’m surprised you get so much attention considering your size?” ...

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — All Notre Dame can do for now is prepare for the regular-season finale against struggling Stanford and wait. The fifth-ranked Fighting Irish have found their groove in November and will be good position for a New Year’s Six bowl and a possible spot in the playoff with a win against the Cardinal on Saturday night. Notre Dame (10-1, CFP No. 6 ) is currently on the outside of the playoff picture but with a win against Stanford (3-8) and some help around the country the next two weeks, the Irish could have a chance at the playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons. “You’re always trying to build your football team to be there at the end,” coach Brian Kelly said. “I don’t know that we spend any time talking about it at one time, but you’re always trying to build your football team so when you get to November, you become a playoff football team. That’s really it. We don’t talk about it, but we’re always going to work every day...
THE dress code “smart casual” always flummoxes me. But if there’s an outfit that encapsulates the description perfectly then it has to be a velvet-look suit. 1This velvet suit finally solved my smart/casual dilemmaCredit: Dan Williams This one, in deep red with ruched sleeves, could be dressed up for a winter wedding with a silk shirt underneath, or dressed down – as shown here – with a plain polo neck sweater or even a smart, long-sleeved T-shirt. Either way, velvet looks classy and gives the impression of making an effort, but also keeps you warm and comfortable if the venue’s a bit chilly. After all, how many times have we turned up somewhere in a slinky frock and ended up having to keep our coats on because someone forgot to switch on the heating? This suit has a loose, rather than tailored, style and the trousers have good length for anyone who, like me, is taller than average.
