In this photo illustration, a hand holding a medical syringe with words that say omicron covid-19 variant in the background.Rafael Henrique | LightRocket | Getty Images White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that 226 cases of the highly mutated omicron Covid-19 variant have been detected across 20 countries so far, but U.S. officials haven't yet confirmed a case in the states. The variant, which first emerged in South Africa about a week ago, has more than 30 mutations to the spike protein alone. That's the key part of the virus that allows it to bind to human cells and infect the body and makes scientists worry that it will be far more infectious than the highly contagious delta variant that's caused a surge in cases across globe in recent months. "This mutational profile is very different from other variants of interest and concern, and although some mutations are also found in delta, this is not delta," Fauci told reporters on a White House Covid-19 task force briefing. "These mutations have been associated with increase transmissibility and...

Forensic analysts have alerted D.C.'s Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS) that there is a new synthetic opioid circulating in the illicit drug supply in the city as it continues to grapple with a flood of fatal overdoses. Scientists at DFS found the synthetic drugs during a routine study of used syringes in September and October, The Washington Post reported. The opioids — called protonitazene and isotonitazene — were found to be several times more potent than fentanyl. While the drugs are not new compounds, the scientist who discovered the first known sample of protonitazene in D.C., Alexandra Evans, told WTOP that it's the first time the opioid has appeared in the District's drug supply. The discovery of the new drugs, known as "nitazenes," has raised alarms, because they could be less vulnerable to some of the primary resources used to prevent overdoses, such as fentanyl testing strips and the overdose antidote Narcan.  According to the CDC, fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Scientists say that nitazene is even more powerful. “What we know about it is that it's more potent than fentanyl. So we are a bit...

CHICAGO (AP) — Two brothers stand at the center of the case that prosecutors will lay before jurors during the trial of Jussie Smollett this week. The former “Empire” actor contends he was the victim of a racist and homophobic assault in downtown Chicago on a frigid night in January 2019. The siblings, who worked with him on the TV show, say he paid them $3,500 to pose as his attackers. A jury was sworn in Monday in the Chicago courtroom, though an unknown number of alternate jurors were still being selected late afternoon. Judge James Linn, who said he expects the trial to take about one week, was asking potential jurors if they have been the victim of a hate crime, if they have watched “Empire” or TMZ, a program and website about celebrities, or if they belong to any civil rights or pro-police organizations. Cameras are not allowed inside the courtroom and the proceedings are not being livestreamed, unlike in other recent high-profile trials. WORCESTER (CBS) — Julia Enright was found guilty of second-degree murder on Monday. She was on trial for the death of her former boyfriend Brandon Chicklis. Chicklis was killed in 2018. Enright had taken the witness stand in her own defense on November 19. According to Enright, she stabbed Chicklis in self-defense as he sexually assaulted her in the treehouse on her family’s property in Ashburnham. She said she ran away and called her boyfriend who she said helped her hide Chicklis’ body in New Hampshire, which was discovered a month later. The prosecutor’s cross-examination showed her in a darker light. She read aloud from her journal. “I just have an insatiable curiosity to kill a person.” She referenced a dominatrix business she had, grave-robbing, and collecting animal bones and organs, which she said was nothing more than her fixation at the time on the controversial musician Marilyn Manson.

A body matching the description of a Wisconsin mother missing since September has been located in Minnesota, according to a private investigation firm. Ashley Miller Carlson, a 33-year-old mother of four who was living in Burnett County, Wisconsin, was last seen on Sept. 23 near the Lake Lena community on the Mille Lacs Band’s Reservation, about 25 miles east of Hinckley in eastern Minnesota's Pine County. Applied Professional Services, a private investigation firm hired by the family, announced Saturday the likely remains of the missing mother were found in a wooded area not far from where Miller Carlson vanished. CAIRO (AP) — A court Monday found a leading Egyptian human rights activist guilty of insulting a judicial election commission in a tweet he posted last year following a national vote. The misdemeanor court in the capital of Cairo fined Hossam Bahgat, director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal rights, 10,000 Egyptian pounds (around $640), his group said. In July, Bahgat was ordered to stand trial on charges he insulted Egypt’s election authority, spread false news alleging electoral fraud, and used social media to commit crimes. His indictment was based on a 2020 tweet in which he blamed the election authority’s chairman for allegedly mishandling the parliamentary vote held that year. The U.S. State Department condemned Bahgat’s trial and detention at the time. The Egyptian government has in recent years waged a wide-scale crackdown on dissent, jailing thousands of people, mainly Islamists, but also secular activists involved in the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Since 2016, Bahgat has been banned from traveling abroad and has had his personal assets frozen in...
