San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler was the easy choice for NL Manager of the Year, but who challenged him the most? Kapler’s Giants fell short in the postseason, but they won 107 games for a reason. San Francisco was picked by some pundits to finish in the bottom half of the NL West before the season. GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — John Souttar scored in his first international game for three years to give Scotland a 2-0 win over Denmark in World Cup qualifying on Monday and secure a home draw in the playoffs. Denmark had already won Group F but Scotland spoiled the European Championship semifinalist’s perfect record as they aimed to win 10 games out of 10. Scotland put pressure on Denmark from the start and won a succession of set-pieces. John McGinn swung Scotland’s eighth corner deep to the far post, where Liam Cooper nodded it back for Souttar to head in. He hadn’t played for Scotland since a red card against Israel in October 2018. Denmark substitute Mikael Uhre miskicked an excellent chance straight at Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon in the 85th. A minute later, Scotland made Denmark pay as Ché Adams charged in behind the Danish defense on the counter and scored. Scotland will enter the playoffs in March along with 11 other teams who finished second in qualifying groups or else had a good record in the UEFA Nations...
SAO PAULO (AP) — Ending a turbulent weekend with a stunning victory, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday and gained momentum in his Formula One title fight with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, beat Verstappen despite starting from 10th position on the grid due to a penalty — the second Hamilton faced this weekend in Sao Paulo. The winner of a race gets 25 points. “Let’s keep pushing,” Hamilton said on team radio. He took a Brazil flag to celebrate his win, just as his idol Ayrton Senna did. Hamilton’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas, finished third and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was fourth with the Mexican clocking the fastest lap of the race. Verstappen led most of the race after the first turn, when he overtook polesitter Bottas. But Hamilton, who rose from 10th to third position in just six laps,...

NEW YORK (AP) — The Veterans Day Parade returned to New York’s Fifth Avenue on Thursday after being canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic last year. The 102nd annual parade featured marching units, vintage military vehicles and elected officials including Mayor Bill de Blasio. “It is a day to remember and to honor, but it should be the first day of what then becomes 365 days of honoring veterans through real actions,” the Democratic mayor said at a ceremony in Madison Square Park that kicked off the Veterans Day observance. De Blasio added, “If anywhere in this city, if anywhere in this country there is a homeless veteran, then we are not finished. We all have more to do. If anywhere there is a veteran suffering from a mental health challenge who is not getting the help he or she needs, we are not finished.” The parade was replaced by a socially distant pre-dawn car caravan in 2020. It was the first time in 19 months that the Ducks had played in front of fans at Matthew Knight Arena because of coronavirus restrictions. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Zia Cooke scored 17 points and top-ranked South Carolina never trailed in its 66-57 win over No. 5 North Carolina State on Tuesday night, earning an impressive road win in a marquee season-opening matchup of Final Four contenders. The Gamecocks scored the first six points and offered a composed response any time the Wolfpack tried to make a move. Cooke paced an offensive team effort that shot 49%, while preseason Associated Press All-American Aliyah Boston controlled the paint and helped shut down Elissa Cunane – N.C. State’s star and the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year. Boston finished with eight points, six rebounds and five blocks for South Carolina. Raina Perez and Jakia Brown-Turner were the only Wolfpack players to find any type of offensive rhythm, each finishing with 18 points. Cunane finished with eight points on 4-for-11 shooting with three rebounds despite failing to hit a basket until the third quarter — a major problem for an offense that relies on her as the interior presence surrounded by capable shooters. The House passed the first part of President Joe Biden’s big economic and infrastructure plans Friday in a 228 to 206 vote. That’s the $1.2 trillion bipartisan hard infrastructure bill negotiated in the Senate with Republicans—and Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, though mostly with Republicans. Now that it has passed, they are of course giving all the credit to the former guy. Which is what any Democrat gets for trying to be “bipartisan” with the crew of Republicans and which was totally predictable because it’s exactly what they did when the bill passed in the Senate back in August. The bill provides about $550 billion in new spending—the other half of the $1.2 trillion total is already authorized money lumped in. It’s heavy on current fossil fuel-dependent infrastructure like roads and bridges, but does add in broadband, water, and energy system investments. It will, according to the Congressional Budget Office, add $256 billion to the deficit over the next decade. This is a key number to keep in mind as the Senate deficit peacocks who wrote this bill screech about the deficit when it...
CHICAGO (AP) — Alex DeBrincat scored 37 seconds into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Sunday night in Derek King’s NHL coaching debut. DeBrincat finished a 2-on-1 break and give-and-go with Patrick Kane to lift the Blackhawks to just their second win. After scoring, DeBrincat scooped the puck from the back of the net, presumably for King, who was promoted from the Blackhawks top minor league club, Rockford of the AHL, to Chicago’s interim coach after Jeremy Colliton was fired on Saturday following a 1-9-2 start. Chicago’s Brandon Hagel and Nashville’s Alexandre Carrier scored 1:50 apart in the second period for the only goals in regulation. Kevin Lankinen stopped 20 shots for the Blackhawks. Juuse Saros finished with 30 saves as Nashville earned a point against Chicago for the 11th straight game (8-0-3).. BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Steven Alker had to qualify for his first PGA Tour Champions event three months ago and kept playing all the way to the Charles Schwab Cup final. Alker capped off his amazing run Sunday when he closed with a 4-under 68 for a two-shot victory in the TimberTech Championship, easily moving into the top 36 players who advance to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Locked in a duel with Jim Furyk on the back nine of The Old Course at Broken Sound, Alker holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole to take the lead, and then finished with a birdie he didn’t need to win by two over Furyk and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Alker won $305,000, pushing his total to $896,207 in just nine tournaments since he qualified for the Boeing Classic outside Seattle in late August for his Champions debut. That’s more than the Kiwi made in his entire career on the PGA Tour, which featured only three full seasons as he toiled on the Australasian and European tours and spent a...

CONCORD — It was a one-score game as the first half was nearing an end Friday night, seven points separating Clayton Valley from being even with De La Salle. If the Ugly Eagles had made a stop in those waning seconds, maybe it would have made a difference in the second half. But Luke Dermon would have none of that. The De La Salle quarterback threw a short touchdown pass to Bryant Meredith with six seconds on the clock to stretch the lead to 14. When the Spartans opened the scored half with two more touchdowns, that was the ballgame. De La Salle won 42-21 on its home field to close the regular season with five consecutive victories. The Spartans improved to 8-2, a resume that is expected to land them the No. 1 seed in the North Coast Section’s new eight-team Open Division/Division I bracket Sunday. Clayton Valley finished 7-3. The Ugly Eagles, who last week celebrated an East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division championship, will probably be seeded third in the Open/D1...
