The assembled crowd of 'regular folks' tried to topple our democracy rather than abide a Republican loss The Washington Post has a long piece looking at these regular folks who took a break from their regular folks' life to storm the U.S. Capitol, attack the police officers who defended it, and contribute to an attempt to overthrow the government. What it doesn't have is much in the way of actual explanations. That's a bit of a disappointment, considering that we know quite a bit about how the crowd was radicalized. Then again, if it were The New York Times we were talking about we'd have three reporters all tag-teaming us to show that each Biff and Mary Jane in the crowd were just trying to be "real Americans" who flew into Washington D.C. directly on the wings of an airborne diner and were only wandering through the haze of tear gas because somebody told them there was another diner just off the Senate cloakroom. We'll take what we can get. Still, though, the facts remain. While many of those who took...

By Robert Burns and Matthew Lee | Associated Press WASHINGTON — Friends, family and former colleagues gathered Friday at Washington National Cathedral to honor Colin L. Washington (CNN)Former President Donald Trump in March called the crowd that had gathered for his speech before the deadly US Capitol insurrection "loving" in an exclusive audio recording obtained by CNN. "I think it was the largest crowd I've ever spoken before. It went from that point -- which is almost at the White house -- to beyond the Washington monument. It was -- and wide. And it was a loving crowd, too, by the way," Trump said in the audio recording taken by Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker during an interview for their new book, "I Alone Can Fix It.""There was a lot of love. I've heard that from everybody. Many, many people have told me that was a loving crowd," the former President added. Trump's comments underscore the vast GOP effort to downplay the Capitol riot. In the months since January 6, the former President and Republican lawmakers in both chambers have offered false accounts of the attack that conflict with reams of video evidence, criminal charges filed against participants and law enforcement...

Nearly 2,000 people who live in Scotland tested positive for COVID-19 after gathering to watch football, or soccer, this month. Many of the cases are people who traveled outside of the country to watch games.  Public Health Scotland said it analyzed COVID-19 test results between June 11 and 28, the start of Euro 2020, the European football championship. They contact traced cases and tagged people who either attended a match in London or went to a pub or house to watch a match.  Nearly 1,470 cases were people between 20 and 39 years old and 90% of the cases were men, according to a Public Health Scotland report. Fox News host Tucker Carlson said Monday night that the National Security Agency (NSA) is spying on him and reading confidential texts and emails in order to try and take his show off the air. Carlson said that a whistleblower from inside the federal government informed Carlson that the NSA was monitoring his online communications. As many as 100 teens ran wild following Glen Rock High School’s graduation, stopping train service, damaging an event area and stealing a statue of the school mascot, authorities said. The panther statue “was returned to our campus after a gracious parent put out the call for a return,” Principal Michael Parent said. It was destroyed, however, the principal said in an email to the parents of school seniors. Parent called the rampage a “disgraceful act” that he said was “committed by our own students. "To say that I am heartbroken is an understatement,” he added. CLICK HERE for a video of the destruction. The trouble began following a “Grad Ball” staged by parents on school grounds after Thursday’s graduation. From 3 a.m. through daybreak Friday, officers “came across numerous large groups of juveniles, perhaps as many as 100, gathered at various locations throughout the borough,” Police Chief Dean Ackerman said. “At one point assistance had to be gained from New Jersey Transit to stop train traffic on the Bergen County line railroad when a group gathered on the train...
