Chamath Palihapitiya, Social Capital Founder and CEOCNBC Social Capital founder and CEO Chamath Palihapitiya became synonymous with SPACs amid the swath of blank-check deals on Wall Street over the last few years. In 2020 alone, SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies, raised more than $83 billion, up from $13 billion in 2019. Through July, there had been $125.7 billion raised by SPACs through 435 deals in 2021. The venture investor has raised billions of dollars in the stock market for SPACs across a wide range of industries from space tourism with Virgin Galactic Holdings to residential real estate with Opendoor to online personal finance with SoFi. But as SPAC deals, which raise capital in an IPO and then use that cash to merge with a private company and take it public, have cooled amid scrutiny from lawmakers and meager investor returns, Palihapitiya says the market correction is welcome. The strong-willed head coach has endured contentious trades and awkward holdouts during his playing days. He was part of a contract dispute back in 1991. Rivers sat out for three weeks in his first and only season with the Los Angeles Clippers. He eventually reported for work and recouped all the money he had lost due to fines. The Sixers honcho recalled the incident following his team’s 115-104 preseason win over the Brooklyn Nets, adding that he was happy Simmons was coming back. “It was great, I was at home the whole time,” Rivers said of his holdout. “What I remember the most is a terrible story but I’ll tell it: I decided to show up to the first practice and like five players were late, and [Clippers coach] Mike Schuler introduced me to the team and I went off on the guys that hadn’t been on time. CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australian government ministers welcomed France’s decision to return its ambassador to Australia and said Thursday they hoped the two nations could repair the damage from a cancelled submarine contract. “We welcome back the French Ambassador to Canberra, and hopefully we can move beyond our recent disappointments,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, deputy leader of the ruling conservative Liberal Party, told Nine Network TV. France recalled its ambassadors from Washington and Canberra last month after Australia cancelled a 90 billion Australian dollar ($66 billion) contract with majority French state-owned Naval Group to build 12 conventional diesel-electric submarines. Under an alliance that includes Britain, Australia will instead acquire a fleet of eight nuclear-powered submarines built with U.S. technology. France quickly returned its ambassador to the United States, a NATO partner. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told a parliamentary committee: “I have now asked our ambassador to return to Canberra with two missions: to help redefine the terms of our relationship with Australia in the future, and to defend our interests in the concrete implementation of the Australian decision to...

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Deported from the United States, Pierre Charles landed a week ago in Port-au-Prince, a capital more dangerous and dystopian than the one he’d left four years before. Unable to reach his family, he left the airport alone, on foot. Charles was unsure how to make his way to the Carrefour neighborhood through a city shrouded in smoke and dust, often tolling with gunfire from gangs and police. On the airport road, the 39-year-old laborer tried unsuccessfully to flag down packed buses. He asked motorcycle drivers to take him but was told again and again that the trip was too risky. Finally, someone agreed to take him as far as a bus stop. “I know there are barricades and shootings,” Charles said as he took off into the unknown, “but I have nowhere else to go.” _____ This story is part of a series, Haiti: Business, politics and gangs, produced with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. ____ At least 2,334 Haitians deported from Texas have landed here in the last...
Arizona voters predominantly are welcoming of their new neighbors who fled a Taliban takeover of their home country but are split on making them their new neighbors, polling shows. OH Predictive Insights, a Phoenix-based polling and marketing firm, released polling Thursday that shows 94% of those surveyed agreed with helping Afghan refugees leave their country. However, 34% said that they should not be settled in the U.S. Voters who supported bringing refugees into the country weren’t unanimous in welcoming them to Arizona. Of those who supported resettlement on American soil, 87% were comfortable welcoming refugees to Arizona. “It is nothing less than heartwarming to see an overarching desire from Arizona voters to help Afghan aides and their families evacuate the country along with U.S. troops," said Mike Noble, OHPI chief of research. "Though there is some disagreement on where our allies should be brought, the data shows that most Arizonans are on board with Governor (Doug) Ducey’s decision to welcome them to the Grand Canyon State.” The poll, conducted from Sept. 7 to Sept. 12, got...

CNN Newsroom host Jim Acosta interviewed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday, and asked him if there was a “contradiction” between our treatment of refugees from Afghanistan as compared to the Haitians who have crossed the U.S. – Mexico border and are camping out under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas. Acosta brought up Mayorkas’ prior comments that he expected “more than 50,000” Afghan refugees to resettle in the U.S., and quoted a reaction from Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT), in which he expressed concerns about whether the refugees were being properly vetted. The screening and vetting processes for these refugees are “multilayered,” replied Mayorkas, and “involves agencies in the intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism areas across the federal government.” He was clear about America’s reasons for taking in these refugees: This is who we are as a country. We stand up for the people who stood up for us. We are providing refuge to individuals who assisted us in combat in Afghanistan. We are providing refuge to vulnerable women, journalists, young kids. For much of 2021, U.S. passport holders have seen an expanding list of international travel options. But with the rise of the Delta variant of Covid-19, that list has started contracting a little. On August 30, the European Union recommended that Americans should be banned from nonessential travel to its member states, though it’s still up to each country in the EU to make the final decision. Total U.S. cases are around the 40.5 million mark since the pandemic started. The Delta variant grows more concerning by the week. Some nations are overwhelmed by Covid cases as well as some U.S. states. In the end, it’s up to you to decide whether travel to international destinations is a good idea. The health risks are obvious if you’re not fully vaccinated. Nations might change their rules at any time. You may have to adhere to strict curfews and mask mandates. Violations could involve big fines and even jail time. If you want expert input into your decision, the U.S. State Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide Covid-19...

London — Amid scenes of frantic Afghans clinging to airplanes to try to escape the Taliban, some European leaders said this week that they would work to prevent migrants and refugees from journeying to the continent without permission. Europe "should not wait until people stand at our external border. We need to help them before that," European Union Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said Wednesday, adding that some people in immediate danger should be resettled within the EU, but "it's important that we can help these people in Afghanistan, when possible, to return to their homes. We also need to help neighboring countries and support Afghanis and these neighboring countries in the region." Johannsson also said that Afghans whose asylum claims are rejected in Europe should not be deported back to their country right now. "We must anticipate and protect ourselves against major irregular migratory flows that would endanger those who use them and feed trafficking of all kinds," French president Emmanuel Macron said on Monday. He said Europe would coordinate with transit countries like Turkey. "We should...
Roanoke has removed a series of portraits of past mayors from its Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, making way for works from local artists. “We felt the entryway to the seat of our local government should better celebrate the diversity present in our community and highlight the contributions made by a wider representation of residents,” City Manager Bob Cowell explained in an August update. According to The Roanoke Times, Cowell told the city council in a letter that “the current image (a corridor lined nearly exclusively with white males) does not align with our efforts at being welcoming or supporting diversity and inclusion.” “Nobody knows who they are, they don’t relate anymore. We just need something more current,” Vice-Mayor Trish White-Boyd said, according to The Times. The portraits were set to be moved to the City Archives in the Main Library. Portraits of the first Mayor of the Town of Big Lick and the first Mayor of Roanoke was planned to be moved into the Council Chamber. “In place of...

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck has claimed the US State Department is blocking his efforts to rescue Afghan Christians from being burned alive or crucified. Beck told Tucker Carlson that he is currently in a Muslim Middle Eastern country, and that his organization, the Nazarene Fund, has flown 5,100 Christians and other refugees, out of Afghanistan since it fell to the Taliban earlier this month.  The broadcaster refused to say which country he was in, or name two other Muslim countries he says have accepted his refugees, over fears the US State Department will hobble his rescue operation.   Beck also said Islamic countries - which he refused to name over fears of US government meddling - had been far more welcoming to the people he'd saved than America.   The broadcaster said this morning he had about 500 refugees - mainly women and children - get through the gate to board one of the Nazarene Fund's flights, only to be told by a United States soldier to go back. 'We believe that our state department is directly responsible for what we believe were...

In this handout provided by the U.S. Air Force, an aircrew prepares to load evacuees aboard a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in support of the Afghanistan evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport on August 21, 2021, in Kabul, Afghanistan. New polling CBS News/YouGov polling released over the weekend shows overwhelming support for evacuating Afghan translators and other allies to the United States. Overall, 81% responded affirmatively when asked if the nation should “help Afghan allies enter the U.S.” Only 19% opposed. There was significant support for protecting our Afghan allies across individual party lines, CBS News said. Support was highest among Democrats, at 90%. But support was also high among independents and Republicans, at 79% and 76%, respectively. “The broad bipartisan support for resettling Afghan allies is part of a broader public opinion trend in favor of immigrants and immigration, which grew stronger during the past four years,” immigrant rights advocacy group America’s Voice said on Monday in response to the polling. The organization noted Gallup polling from last July that showed near-record high support among Americans who believe more immigration is good....
President Joe Biden on Sunday said that America will “welcome these Afghans who have helped us in the war effort over the last 20 years to their new home in the United States of America because that’s who we are.” In a press conference, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to evacuating both Afghan refugees and Americans from Afghanistan, following the U.S. military withdrawal. He noted that since July, the U.S. has evacuated “approximately 33,000 persons.” Biden acknowledged that the Kabul evacuation would be “hard and painful, no matter when it started.” “There’s no way to evacuate this many people without pain and loss of heartbreaking images you see on television. It’s just a fact,” he added. The president went on to outline the evacuation procedures in place for Afghans who assisted the U.S. military and are awaiting approval of their applications for Special Immigrant Visas. He said “processing centers” have been set up in several countries including in Qatar, Germany, Kuwait, and Spain. “These transit centers provide a safe place for the SIV applicants and other vulnerable Afghanis and their families...
By Forrest Brown and Brekke Fletcher | CNN Editor’s note: CNN Travel updates this article periodically. It was last updated in its entirety on August 9. The entry on Turks and Caicos was updated on August 20. US passport holders have more international travel options now than at any point during the Covid-19 pandemic. Total US cases are around the 37.3 million mark since the pandemic started. After a promising spring and early summer of declining cases in 2021, new dark clouds have appeared on the horizon. The Delta variant grows more concerning by the week. Some nations are overwhelmed by Covid cases. And vaccination rates lag significantly in some US states. Still, more of Europe opened up this summer to US leisure travelers, especially the fully vaccinated. And Canada joined the list on August 9. In the end, it’s up to you to decide whether travel to international destinations is a good idea. The health risks are obvious if you’re not fully vaccinated. Nations might change their rules at any time. You may have to adhere to strict curfews...
