Long Covid may lead to an increased risk of death in the year after a patient's diagnosis, a new study finds. Researchers at the University of Florida analyzed health records from over 13,000 patients, following them for 12 months.  Patients who had severe Covid symptoms were 2.5 times as likely to die over the next year after their diagnosis compared with those who tested negative for Covid. Younger patients (under age 65) who suffered severe symptoms had a particularly high mortality risk at 3.3 times as likely to die as patients under age 65 who tested negative. The study indicates that there's 'a substantial risk of dying' from unrecognized Covid complications, the study's lead author said. Vaccination can prevent such complications.  Patients hospitalized with severe Covid symptoms have an increased risk of dying - from all causes - in the next year, a new study finds. Pregnant women infected with COVID-19 are far more likely to require intensive care or die in childbirth compared to pregnant women who do not catch the virus, a new study finds. Researchers at the Université de Paris studied Covid's impacts on more than 200,000 pregnant women in France during the first wave of the pandemic, from January to June 2020. Mothers-to-be with Covid were 40 times as likely to die during childbirth compared to those who weren't infected with the virus. The Covid patients were also more likely to experience pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia, gestational hypertension and hemorrhages, or end up in ICUs. The researchers encourage pregnant women to get vaccinated in order to protect them against severe Covid outcomes. Despite these risks, only 35 percent of pregnant women in the U.S. were fully vaccinated as of November 20, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Pregnant women infected with Covid face a much higher risk of being admitted to an ICU or dying, a new study finds. Pictured: A mother-to-be receives a Pfizer booster shot...
Despite being the size of a grain of salt, a new microscopic camera can capture crisp, full-colour images on par with normal lenses that are 500,000 times larger. The ultra-compact optical device was developed by a team of researchers from Princeton University and the University of Washington. It overcomes problems with previous micro-sized camera designs, which have tended to take only distorted and fuzzy images with very limited fields of view. The new camera could allow super-small robots to sense their surroundings, or even help doctors see problems within the human body. Then-candidate Joe Biden in 2020 promised at least ten times he would “shut down the virus.” But as fresh variants have emerged since Biden assumed office in January, the president has failed to shut down the Chinese coronavirus. The New York Times acknowledged last week the United States has suffered more coronavirus deaths under Biden than under former President Donald Trump, despite vaccine availability. And he prematurely declared independence from the virus back in July”: On Friday the world awakened to a new variant, dubbed the “Biden variant,” which spawned from South Africa. The variant has so far reached at least two other continents, Australia and Europe. “The two passengers...

Former President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has reportedly been reaching out to some of the connections he built during his father-in-law's administration for investment in a new firm. Kushner has reached out to leaders in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and other Persian Gulf states to try and get backing for Affinity Partners, Kushner's new company, according to The New York Times.  The former Director of the Office of American Innovation and senior advisor to his wife's father, Donald Trump, has purportedly not been entirely successful in his efforts, which seek to raise an amount 'in the low billions of dollars' by early next year, The Times said. Rulers in both Qatar and the UAE have reportedly declined to invest in Affinity. However, Kushner has purportedly found interest from Saudi Arabia and the kingdom's $450 billion Public Investment Fund.    The Times reported that the Saudi PIF is currently in negotiations with Kushner over a 'sizable investment.' Playing on Thanksgiving is nothing new for the Chicago Bears, who have done it 37 times — the third most in the NFL. Known as the Decatur and then Chicago Staleys for its first two Thanksgiving games, the team competed on the November holiday annually for 19 consecutive years from 1920-38. The venue that has hosted the Bears most on Thanksgiving — 11 times — is Wrigley Field. Here’s a look back at the team’s record on the holiday from the past century. Memorable Thanksgiving game moments for the Bears Nov. 26, 1925: The Bears and Chicago Cardinals play to a scoreless tie at Wrigley Field before 36,000 people — then the largest crowd in professional football history. The teams face each other on Thanksgiving in 1926 — with the game resulting in another scoreless tie. Nov. 29, 1934: The defending champion Bears defeat the Lions 19-16 in the...
Attorney General Merrick Garland is under fire from Republican lawmakers for allegedly politicizing the Justice Department. Rep. Jim Jordan spoke to the Washington Examiner about the Garland school boards memo controversy, saying: “My gut tells me that the main focus was this was politics. And that's what the Justice Department has been under Garland.” He added: “Joe Biden criticizes the Georgia election law, a few months later they sue Georgia. Joe Biden criticizes the Texas pro-life law. Eight days later, they sure Texas. Joe Biden’s White House is working with the National School Boards Association … and, five days later, he issues the memorandum.” Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, echoed this theme, telling Garland: “Since your confirmation, in less than a year, the department has moved as far left as it can go” and that “you’ve politicized the department in ways it shouldn’t be.” Garland has repeatedly denied politicizing the DOJ.               moreby Aaron Maté   Five years after the Hillary Clinton campaign-funded collection of Trump-Russia conspiracy theories known as the Steele dossier was published by BuzzFeed, news outlets that amplified its false allegations have suffered major losses of credibility. The recent indictment of the dossier’s main source, Igor Danchenko, for allegedly lying to the FBI, has catalyzed a new reckoning. In response to what the news site Axios has called “one of the most egregious journalistic errors in modern history,” the Washington Post has re-edited at least a dozen stories related to Steele. For two of those, the Post removed entire sections, changed headlines, and added lengthy editor’s notes. But the Post’s response also exhibits the limits of the media’s Steele-induced self-examination. First, the reporters bylined on those two articles, Rosalind S. Helderman and Tom Hamburger, and their editors have declined to explain how and why they were so egregiously misled. Nor have they revealed the names of the anonymous sources responsible for deceiving them and the public over months and years. Perhaps more important, the Post, like other publications, has so far limited...

SANTA CLARA — Call it the Magic 40, and it has helped turn around a 49ers season that appeared to be on the rocks three weeks ago. Coach Kyle Shanahan set an ambitious goal of 40 rushing plays in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Rams, and his offense came through with 44 rushes for 156 yards in a 31-10 win. The 49ers followed that up with a 42-carry, 171-yard effort in beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-10 to even their record at 5-5. Next up are the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, who know what it’s like to be on the other end of a full-on ground and pound, having lost to the 49ers 27-10 in the first round of the playoffs following the 2019 season and absorbing 47 rushes for 186 yards. Shanahan covets 40 carries for good reason. In his 15th season as a play-caller, Shanahan has reached or exceeded 40 rushes 18 times. He was the offensive coordinator in Houston (2008-09), Washington (2010-13), Cleveland (2014) and Atlanta (2015-16). He’s called the plays for the 49ers...

A vintage murder mystery that flummoxed puzzlers in the 1930s is booming in popularity thanks to TikTok users who are desperate to solve it's clues.   Cain's Jawbone: A Novel Problem, first published in 1934, is a 100-page crime novel that tells the story of six murders, each with a different victim and killer.  But unlike a traditional novel, the pages of the book are printed on individual, loose cards that have been jumbled up and placed back together in a carry case at random.  And while the puzzle has only ever been solved by four people, this could all be about to change after the book saw a new boom in popularity thanks to TikTok.  Sales have gone through the roof in the last week, after American TikTok user Sarah Scannell revealed she had found the book in a shop and was trying to crack the code.  Cain's Jawbone: A Novel Problem, first published in 1934, is a 100-page crime novel that tells the story of six murders, each with a different victim and killer, and has sold out online after...
Prices are up. That’s absolutely true. Inflation has increased since the beginning of 2021 at a rate unmatched since 2009. But that’s what happens every time a Democratic president drags the economy back out of the ditch where a Republican administration left it. It’s not, as the media seems to be insisting, a sign of the apocalypse. Two weeks ago, CNN ran a segment that was supposedly about how families are “constrained by inflation” and that this is putting “a burden” on their lives. In the segment, CNN’s Brianna Keilar throws over to reporter Evan McMorris-Santoro with an expression of deep concern about how inflation is affecting how families “feed their kids.” McMorris-Santoro, handily standing in front of a gas station sign, moves directly into how gas is “up by more than a dollar since last year” without noting that the prices in 2020 were heavily depressed by the pandemic.  He then goes on to interview his typical American family in Texas—who have nine kids and buy 12 gallons of milk each week.  Most of the criticism about the story has focused on that astounding...

The New York Times was dealt an extended ban from a New York judge preventing the newspaper from publishing materials related to Project Veritas. The extension of the ban, initially put in place on Nov. 18, will run through at least Dec. 1. That is the deadline for Project Veritas to respond to the newspaper's arguments in favor of ending the ban. New York City has cut ties with one of the biggest homeless shelter operators in the city after it was revealed that the CEO collected more than $1million a year in salary while steering millions of dollars in business to other for-profit companies he headed.    Jack A Brown III, the Chief Executive Officer of CORE Services Group, received more than $352million in city funding to operate 15 homeless shelters and hotels around New York. However, a blockbuster investigation found that the 53-year-old Brown hired his unqualified relatives, redirected millions of dollars from his non-profit business towards his for-profit companies and collected a seven-figure salary, The New York Times reported.  Lame-duck Mayor Bill de Blasio, who had made fixing the city's homeless crisis one of his top priorities during his eight years in office, immediately cut ties with CORE. Additionally. those who have anxiety or mood disorders are almost three times as likely to die from the virus as people without these conditions.  What's more, people with psychiatric disorders were also found to contract COVID-19 at lower rates, which researchers believe is a result of social isolation associated with the conditions. Playing on Thanksgiving is nothing new for the Chicago Bears, who have done it 36 times — tied for the third most in the NFL. Known as the Decatur and then Chicago Staleys for its first two Thanksgiving games, the team competed on the November holiday annually for 19 consecutive years from 1920-38. The venue that has hosted the Bears most on Thanksgiving — 11 times — is Wrigley Field. As the Bears travel to Michigan for its 19th Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions, here’s a look back at the team’s record on the holiday from the past century. Memorable Thanksgiving game moments for the Bears Nov. 26, 1925: The Bears and Chicago Cardinals play to a scoreless tie at Wrigley Field before 36,000 people — then the largest crowd in professional football history. It’s also the first professional football game for Red Grange, whose signing from the University of Illinois days earlier is credited with helping legitimize the NFL. The teams face each other on Thanksgiving in 1926 — with the game resulting...
The disparity in cable news coverage of the Kyle Rittenhouse and Ahmaud Arbery trials is in many ways predictable. They are very different stories that took very different roles in our political and societal realms. The disparity in coverage within each network, however, is revealing, particularly when it comes to Fox News, the highest-rated cable network, but a very wide margin. The Kyle Rittenhouse trial captivated the nation’s attention, in part because it was a fascinating legal discussion between self-defense as a legal defense, and the role of vigilante justice amid riots following America’s racial reckoning of 2020. Rittenhouse’s actions in August of 2020 became a wedge issue in the last general election and was even featured in a regrettable Biden campaign ad that portrayed him as a “White Supremacist.” On the other hand, Ahmaud Arbery’s case seems much less complicated, and perhaps clearer cut. Three white individuals chased down Arbery and eventually shot and killed him because they claimed they were making a “citizen’s arrest.” There are clear racial elements to the case, which have only been supported...
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER isn't the first Man Utd legend to be given his marching orders. The Norwegian, 48, was finally sacked (for the second time in his career) by the club after a dismal 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford over the weekend, following weeks of speculation and a dismal run of form. 14Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn't the first ex-Man Utd star to be given his marching orders as a boss Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane have been linked with the vacant post. But, the Red Devils will do well to steer clear of any former players. Many who played under legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson made a foray into management, most ended up flopping. Bay Area drivers looking to beat the Thanksgiving rush this Wednesday will have their work cut out for them. Two main East Bay arteries – Interstate 580 and Interstate 80 – will see double the traffic as last year, picking up around noon and gaining steam until it crescendos into a mess of congestion late afternoon, according to AAA. “Things were tough in 2019. And they’re going to be tough again,” said John Goodwin, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. “It’s sort of baked into the pie.” Bay Area highways won’t be the only choke points. Holiday travel is on the rebound nationally this year with nearly 4 million more people driving this Thanksgiving than last year. The data suggests the absolute worst time to travel will be between 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, although the roads will start clogging up starting as early as noon. Eastbound I-80 will see a crush of cars starting near the Bay Bridge toll plaza and continuing all the way to San Pablo, according to travel analytics firm INRIX, which produced the AAA data....

A hypersonic weapon test carried out by China in July featured a missile fired at five times the speed of sound - a technological feat which no other country has demonstrated, according to US intelligence.   The hypersonic glide vehicle - a spacecraft with the ability to carry a nuclear warhead - fired a missile mid-flight over the South China Sea, catching Pentagon scientists unawares. Experts at Darpa - the Pentagon's advanced research agency - are apparently still baffled at how China was able to defy the constraints of physics to fire a weapon from the vehicle travelling at hypersonic speed, the Financial Times reports. Analysts are also attempting to piece together the purpose of the missile, which was fired with no obvious target before landing into the sea.  China is thought to have carried out two tests of a hypersonic orbital nuke - the first on July 27 and the second on August 13 this year Both Russia and the US have explored hypersonic weapons in recent years, but experts say China's firing of countermeasures is proof that Beijing's technology...

Tucker Carlson revealed on Friday night that his Originals series on Fox Nation would premiere a documentary about Kyle Rittenhouse, who was found not guilty on all counts earlier in the day. In addition, Carlson will interview Rittenhouse Monday night on Fox News. Rittenhouse attorney Mark Richards was interview by Chris Cuomo on CNN hours after he secured acquittals for his client. “Please don’t take this question the wrong way and let me know if you’re taking it the wrong way,” said Cuomo. “Word [is] that you guys had a film crew embedded with you from Fox News from Tucker Carlson.” “I hadn’t,” said Richards. “I want to know why that decision was made,” said the CNN host. “I did not approve of that,” replied Richards. “I threw them out of the room several times. They were — and I’m not suggesting that Fox or some other network — I don’t think a film crew is appropriate for something like this. But the people who were raising the money to pay for the experts and to pay for the attorneys were trying to...
Former senior Trump aide Peter Navarro says the New York Times is keeping his book In Trump Time off the forthcoming nonfiction bestseller list, despite the fact he says that it trumps the vast majority of books on the list in terms of units sold. Speaking to Breitbart News Saturday, Navarro said it shows that the “newspaper of record” is nothing more than a “propaganda rag dedicated to promoting left-wing causes [and] lying about what exists in America. Navarro, who served as director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy (OTMP) and ran the Defense Production Act during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, recently released In Trump Time, which exposes the “Faucis” of the world.  According to Book Scan sales data that Navarro provided to Breitbart News, Paul McCartney’s The Lyrics will be No. 1 with 36,954 units sold, followed by Immune with 38,525 units sold and The President and the Freedom Fighter with 28,587 sold. Navarro said his book should be in third, as he said it has 33,314 sales, 90 percent of which he said were individual sales. Most of the sales, he added, were from Amazon and Barnes...
