(CNN)Spotify is not joking around amid a dispute over royalties for comedy content. The streaming giant has removed the work of hundreds of comedians from its platform -- including Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart and the late Robin Williams -- according to rights agency Spoken Giants.Spoken Giants, which represents some of the affected comedians, describes itself as "the first global rights administration company for the owners and creators of spoken word copyrights," and aims to get streaming platforms to pay comedians for writing jokes in the same way songwriters are paid. The group told CNN that the take-down happened on November 24, and said that it never requested the content's removal. "Unfortunately, Spotify removed the work of individual comedians rather than continue to negotiate," CEO Jim King told CNN."With this take-down, individual comedians are now being penalized for collectively requesting the same compensation songwriters receive," he added. "After Spotify removed our members' work, we reached out but have not received a response. We have now requested an immediate meeting to resolve this situation."Read MoreTiffany Haddish offers up advice for those looking to...
Gen Z grew up on social media — we've been building our list of friends and followers since we were young. So, for college students who want to try their hand at launching a business, they have a ready-made customer base and marketing platform at their fingertips. Social media platforms recognize that potential and have been rolling out commerce tools. Pinterest and Facebook were among the earliest to launch shopping/marketplace features and Instagram followed a few years later, giving small businesses the opportunity to reach millions — and in some cases billions — of users. This has been a game-changer for start-ups. In August, TikTok announced a partnership with Shopify, where Shopify merchants who have a TikTok for Business account are able to add a shopping tab to their profiles. Reality star Kylie Jenner was among the first users to try the new TikTok shopping feature, using it to market her Kylie Cosmetics beauty products to her 37 million followers.Kylie Jenner attends the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on...

A global rights administration company, Spoken Giants, is working with a group of high-profile comedians — including Tiffany Haddish, Jim Gaffigan, Kevin Hart and John Mulaney — to negotiate terms that would allow the comics to be paid when their work is paid on platforms like Spotify, SiriusXM, Pandora and YouTube, the Journal reported Saturday. The comedians aim to collect royalties for "underlying composition copyrights of spoken-word media," according to the Journal, similar to the way a songwriter would be paid for their music and lyrics. Spotify took the comedians' work off the streaming platform when the two groups met an impasse. "Spotify has paid significant amounts of money for the...

Former President Donald Trump is reportedly still on a warpath to avenge his exile from social media platforms. Although Trump appears to have failed in his attempt to create a far-right, MAGA-fueled social media platform of his own, the former president may have found a right-wing business partner to help advance his agenda. According to The Daily Beast, Trump is holding private discussions with the Canadian-based right-wing video sharing platform, Rumble. Email and server records reportedly suggest that Rumble and Trump's nearly defunct platform Truth social already have shared infrastructure. Per The Beast: "In recent months, Rumble and the twice-impeached former president’s social media venture have been in talks about a potential business partnership, according to two people familiar with the matter. One of these sources, who has spoken to Trump about the prospect, said the former president has repeatedly inquired about how much Rumble could pay him—and has bragged that whatever Rumble offers, his partnership would be worth “double that,” given his massive fanbase of conservatives and Republican voters." The timing of both companies going public also raises...
Sponsored Content Ten years ago, Bitcoin was only worth a single dollar. However, by April 2021, Bitcoin had reached an all-time high of $60,000. Furthermore, with its recent adoption as legal tender in El Salvador, Bitcoin just might be gearing up for a takeover. But, to comfortably trade or buy Bitcoin, you need the best Bitcoin exchange. For clarity, an exchange is a service platform that allows you to trade in your local currency, either directly or otherwise, for Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. There are different kinds of Bitcoin exchanges. Some have provisions for electronic wallets that allow you to store your newly purchased cryptocurrency, while others simply allow you to interconvert between Bitcoin and other currencies. There are also Bitcoin exchanges that deploy a P2P marketplace for crypto purchases, which means the exchange itself is not directly involved in the sale. Instead, they connect you to other sellers and charge a small amount as a transaction fee for using the service. Peer-to-peer marketplaces have grown to become a vital feature of exchanges, especially in countries where the use...

VIDEO3:2203:22Webull CEO on how his trading platform differs from RobinhoodETF Edge Webull CEO Anthony Denier says there are two key factors that set his trading platform apart from industry peers such as Robinhood. Though Webull's 7 million account holders are demographically similar to those of its larger rival, with an average age of 40 and average account size of $4,000, they tend to be more active and more advanced investors, Denier told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. "Our traders are very quick to take positions. They go in and out of positions very, very fast," sometimes using leveraged ETFs to trade on momentum, the CEO said. Webull users also tend to use sophisticated analytical tools such as charting and backtesting to decide when to enter and exit their trades, Denier said. "They're much more intellectual and experienced in what they're doing," he said. "They graduate from ... easy-to-trade, don't get too deep in it, to I want to get deep in it, I really want to nerd out on this and I want to learn more and learn how to...

Wired explains in a recent article why Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey was the “soul of Twitter” and appeared to be truly dedicated to his vision for the platform. Wired writes in an article titled “Jack Dorsey Was the Soul of Twitter,” about the journey that former Twitter CEO has undertaken throughout his career. Dorsey founded Twitter in 2006 but was forced out of his CEO role in 2008 by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams and board member Fred Wilson. But Dorsey was quick to get to work on another project. This marked the beginning of what would become the company called Square, a payments processor still helmed by Dorsey that is now worth nearly $100 billion. Jack Dorsey at Bitcoin conference ( Joe Raedle /Getty) Wired writes: Revenge, they say, is a dish best served cold, but in the next few years, Jack Dorsey was presented with a lavish feast, served not only piping hot but probably vegan as well. Or maybe keto. Not only did that weird app turn into Square—now valued at nearly $100 billion—but in 2011, Twitter’s...
Twitter is expanding the list of content banned from its platform, and it will no longer allow users to share the “private media” of individuals without their consent. The social media company announced the new changes in a blog post written by its Twitter Safety team Tuesday, updating its policy on sharing private information such as driver’s license numbers or home addresses to include private media like images and videos. Under the new rules, an individual can notify Twitter if an image of them is shared without their consent, and Twitter will consider removing the offending image. “The misuse of private media can affect everyone, but can have a disproportionate effect on women, activists, dissidents, and members of minority communities,” Twitter Safety wrote in the post. The policy does not apply to images that users upload of themselves to be viewed by the public, such as images posted to their Twitter accounts, a Twitter spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation. Twitter will also exempt private media “featuring public figures or individuals when media and accompanying Tweet text are shared...

moreby Ailan Evans   Disney’s streaming service pulled an episode of ‘The Simpsons” that mocked Chinese censorship of the Tiananmen Square Massacre from its Hong Kong platform, according to multiple reports. The episode, titled “Goo Goo Gai Pan,” featured the Simpson family traveling to Beijing, where they walk past a plaque in Tiananmen Square, the site of the 1989 massacre, that read: “On this site, in 1989, nothing happened.” Homer Simpson also referred to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as “a little angel that killed 50 million people” in the episode. The episode is not available to be streamed on the Hong Kong version of Disney+, according to multiple reports. The episode can be accessed through a virtual private network that sets the location of a user’s IP address to a foreign country, Variety reported, indicating that the episode was specifically removed from the Hong Kong service. “This is the first notable time an American streaming giant has censored content in Hong Kong,” Kenny Ng, a professor at Hong Kong Baptist University specializing in film censorship, told Bloomberg. “Basically, the whole story is for streaming companies...
An episode of The Simpsons that shows the family visiting Beijing’s Tiananmen Square is missing from Disney+’s Hong Kong platform. In the 12th episode of the 16th season, titled “Goo Goo Gai Pan” and first released in 2005, the Simpsons family travels to China looking to adopt a baby. While in Beijing, they visit Tiananmen Square, where student-led pro-democracy protests were held for several months until the government issued a deadly crackdown in June 1989. “On this site, in 1989, nothing happened,” reads a satirical sign in the episode, highlighting both the massacre and the country’s repeated attempts to purge references to it. Disney+ went live in Hong Kong this month, prompting several viewers to notice that episode 12 of season 16 was missing from the platform. “Basically, the whole story is for streaming companies to be more tailored to a Chinese audience and to not offend the Chinese government,” Kenny Ng, an associate professor at Hong Kong Baptist University specializing in film censorship, told Bloomberg. “This is likely to continue in the future with more companies with financial interests...
By MICHELLE CHAPMAN Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has stepped down as CEO of the social media platform. He has been succeeded by Twitter’s current chief technology officer, Parag Agrawal. Dorsey will remain on the board until his term expires in 2022. Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011 and has been CTO since 2017. In a letter posted on his Twitter account, Dorsey said he was “really sad…yet really happy” about leaving the company and that it was his decision. On Sunday, Dorsey had sent a cryptic tweet reading only “I love Twitter.” Twitter shares rose 5% to $49.47 in morning trading after the announcement. Twitter was caught up in the heated political atmosphere leading up to the 2020 election, particularly when it banned former President Donald Trump following his incitement of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Dorsey defended the move, saying Trump’s tweets after the event resulted in a risk to public safety and created an “extraordinary and untenable circumstance” for the company. Trump sued the company, along with Facebook and YouTube, in July for alleged censorship. Critics...

OAKLAND (KPIX) — An enterprising teenager in the East Bay is pondering how to invest his six-figure profit after selling a startup he founded during the pandemic. Calix Huang developed an idea last fall to enhance virtual studying during the pandemic. The self-taught coder programmed the project in one night: “I was able to get a really simple version of it running in six to seven hours,” Huang said. The son of engineers, Huang founded Hours, a virtual studying platform that connects students anywhere in the world. Instead of doing practice exams in isolation, Hours allows others to view and chat about a student’s progress, as all study together. “Something I’ve always been really passionate about it building things and building projects that people will use and impact people in a positive way,” Huang said. The free tool took off and, in six months, more than 20,000 students in more than 120 countries were using Hours. At a time when many students were going to school virtually from home, 17-year-old Aryan Vichare of Fremont High School jumped onto Hours. “It...
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An oil tanker hit an offshore oil platform at night off Louisiana because its Turkish operating company didn’t give the ship’s master time to recover from days of sleepless travel, federal investigators have found. The master, or person in charge of sailing the Atina, had traveled from Istanbul and told investigators “he was tired from having no sleep for over 50 hours,” according to a National Transportation Safety Board report made public Tuesday. The crash early Oct. 17, 2020, did an estimated $72.9 million in damage — $72.3 million to the platform SP-57B and the rest to the tanker Atina, the board said. However, nobody was hurt when the empty 898-foot-long (274-meter) ship ran into the platform at 4:46 a.m., and there wasn’t any pollution, the board said. The “accident master” took over immediately from the departing master even though the operating company’s own safety manual calls for a 24-hour overlap, the report said. Such an overlap would have let him rest, it said. The report described the accident’s probable cause as the “operating company...

On Tuesday, the Cedar Oxygen Fund announced during a virtual conference that it had formed a “joint venture” with the Lebanese Economic Empowerment Fund (LEEF) with investment platform Bamboo Capital Partners (Bamboo). Thus, an initiative launched in 2020 and surpassing the initial goal of Luxembourg-based Cedar Oxygen, involves providing loans to Lebanese businessmen to finance the import of raw materials in the wake of the country’s economic and financial crisis. Has been going on for two years. Bamboo Managing Partner Florian Kemmerich announced that the joint venture, which will allow halving costs and risks, aims to raise “$ 500 million” to invest in Lebanese companies. At Cedar Oxygen, the central bank is the sole investor, almost three times the amount invested by the Lebanese bank ($ 175 million in five years, renewable every six months). This initial amount made it possible to lend to a dozen companies. If Cedar Oxygen now benefits from the international network of bamboo fund investors, there will be “no last word” on these two funds, Alexandre Hergas, CEO of Cedar Oxygen, has promised. Will...

New York (CNN Business)Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, is set to testify in a Senate subcommittee hearing in early December about the platform's potentially harmful impact on younger users following months of scrutiny on the issue. The testimony will mark Mosseri's first appearance before Congress. It also makes him the most high-profile executive from Meta, the social media company formerly known as Facebook, to agree to testify since Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked hundreds of internal company documents. Some of those documents showed that the company's own researchers have found Instagram can damage young users' mental health and body image, and can exacerbate dangerous behaviors such as eating disorders. "After bombshell reports about Instagram's toxic impacts, we want to hear straight from the company's leadership why it uses powerful algorithms that push poisonous content to children driving them down rabbit holes to dark places, and what it will do to make its platform safer," Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who chairs the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Data Security, said in a statement to CNN Business. Blumental previously called...

Mosseri uploaded a video to his Twitter Wednesday touting the work the platform has done to improve experiences online for young users. “These are important issues but we have shared goals,” he said, referring to Congress. “We all want young people to be safe when they’re online.” How social media affects teens and children has cut...

The head of the Oklahoma Republican Party on Tuesday called on Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel to resign after she expressed the party’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community at a gala earlier this month. In an 1,100-word fundraising email headed “RNC Chair MUST Change Course or RESIGN,” OKGOP chair John Bennett said McDaniel “must resign” if “she cannot or will not stand for who we say we are.” “The OKGOP will not cooperate with this decision and, as your Chairman, I assure the Oklahoma Republican Party that I will continue to stand up for our Republican Party Values and our principles,” Bennett wrote in the email. He added that religious freedom is “flat-out incompatible with the pillars of the LGBT movement.” “Let’s clear the way of those who are either too incompetent or too selfish to actually defend liberty and our Judeo-Christian founding,” Bennett wrote, then asked for donations to his organization. McDaniel crossed conservative Christians when she announced the creation of an “RNC Pride Coalition” at the annual Spirit of Lincoln dinner put on by Log Cabin Republicans—...

Dozens of children's advocacy organizations, as well as tech and privacy groups, in a Tuesday letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg pushed for the platform to stop targeting children, particularly using artificial intelligence to deliver specific ads to young people who are considered vulnerable. Facebook's global head of safety, Antigone Davis, said during a Senate hearing in September that the platform has "very limited advertising to young people," which the coalition said was "misleading, to both the public and the Senate."
