DUBLIN — A Bay Area man was convicted of hiring a still-unidentified gunman to murder his friend over a financial dispute, a crime prosecutors say was motivated by $1.35 million in insurance policies the defendant hoped to collect. Albert Jones Jr. 39, was convicted of hiring the murderer of 27-year-old Alexander Jacob Martinez, a music engineer who was shot and killed outside of a Castro Valley recording studio in 2016. The gunman played the role of a robber, but forced Martinez to kneel and shot him in the head, according to authorities. The guilty verdict came in Jones’ second trial. He was tried once earlier this year but jurors failed to reach a verdict and a mistrial was declared, court records show. Jones and Martinez were once close friends and roommates in Concord, but grew apart after a financial dispute over unpaid bills at their residence, according to witness testimony. After the murder, Jones was interviewed by police; he admitted to placing a tracking device that he bought online onto Martinez’s car, explaining he felt increasingly humiliated by Martinez ducking...

The silence by the FBI over whether it has recovered the gun used by Brian Laundrie to kill himself and why investigators did not reveal that he had a weapon in the first place has led to a backlash against the feds for not warning the public that Gabby Petito's deranged fiance was armed and dangerous during his month-long manhunt. Laundrie's body was found in Florida's Carlton Reserve on Oct. 20 and an autopsy Tuesday revealed that he died of a single bullet wound to the head. His family's lawyer Steve Bertolino told DailyMail.com on Wednesday that one of the family's guns was missing when Laundrie vanished on Sept. 13, but that the feds kept it secret because they didn't want the public to panic. While Laundrie's family was uncertain of the missing weapon's make and model, Bertolino said that it was definitely a pistol, and that the family definitely reported it missing. 'I don't know if [law enforcement] would mention that at the beginning - they found a body, they found possessions, that was it,' he said of the...

A Corona man was convicted of murder this week for shooting to death a woman inside her North Long Beach home in January 2017 after a dispute a prosecutor said centered on who he voted for in the 2016 presidential election. Jurors found that John Kevin McVoy, Jr., 40, intentionally used a firearm in the killing of 33-year-old Susan Garcia, Deputy District Attorney Irene Lee said. He was scheduled to return for sentencing Dec. 15, where he faces a possible maximum sentence of 35 years to life in state prison. But the jury found him not guilty of two counts of attempted murder and one count of child endangerment in relation to critically wounding Susan Garcia’s husband, Victor, with the child nearby: The prosecutor said Victor Garcia told McVoy to get out of his house for voting for Hillary Clinton; Susan Garcia was holding the couple’s 2-year-old son when the two shots were fired. The boy was not injured. McVoy and Victor Garcia were in a garage band together and scheduled to practice that night. Two other bandmates were in...
Medical examiner Dr. Edmund Donoghue testified in court Tuesday that the shot that struck Arbery's left chest and armpit alone was lethal enough to kill the jogger The forensic pathologist who examined Ahmaud Arbery's body post-mortem said the jogger was still standing after being shot seven times because he entered 'fight or flight' mode, noting that the single shot to his left chest and armpit alone was enough to kill him. Medical examiner Dr. Edmund Donoghue, who played key role in a 1982 investigation into cyanide-laced Tylenol that killed seven people, walked the court through graphic images he took of Arbery's body during his testimony Tuesday. 'His cause of death was multiple shotgun wounds,' Donoghue said as the questioning began, however, according to the forensic pathologist's testimony, the shot that struck Arbery's left chest and armpit alone was lethal enough to kill the jogger. 'This could've caused his death because it involved the axillary artery and axillary vein which are large blood vessels that go to the upper extremity,' he said as the state showed a picture of Arbery's body.   If the 25-year-old had only...

OAKLAND — An Oakland man accused of murdering two people during the sale of an assault rifle took the stand this week and admitted to being the killer, but said he only shot both men after they pointed a gun at him first. Ronyae Haywood, 27, went through the double shooting step by step, testifying that his life flashed before his eyes as one of the men he’s accused of murdering pointed a gun at him and announced to Haywood that he was being robbed. Haywood said he remembered thinking, “There’s a gun at my stomach.” “I’ve never had a gun pointed at me before,” Haywood testified, later adding he was repeating in his head, “ ’I’m going to get shot, I’m going to get shot’ … I’m not mad at all. I’m scared (expletive).” Haywood is accused of murdering Duane Palmer Jr., 28, of Oakland and Tyler Dalton Kline, 27, of Dublin in a March 2020 shooting in San Leandro. He testified that after placing an assault rifle in Palmer and Kline’s trunk — a gun he had agreed to...
Aaron Rodgers's estranged father has come out in support of the Green Bay Packers quarterback's controversial decision to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine and is questioning 'haters' accused him of misleading the public.   'I'm not sure why people think he misled anybody,' Ed Rodgers told USA Today. Controversy over Aaron's vaccination status erupted last week when he tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to enter a 10-day quarantine — the minimum amount of time an unvaccinated player is asked to quarantine, per NFL rules. The revelation that he's unvaccinated came as a surprise to many because Aaron appeared to indicate in August that he had received the injection. When asked by reporters at training camp if he was vaccinated, Aaron said, 'yeah, I've been immunized,' but did not explain at the time that he was referring to a therapeutic treatment prescribed by his doctors and not any COVID-19 vaccine. He clarified his statement on the Pat McAfee show last week, explaining that he's allergic to an ingredient in the vaccine and also had concerns about potentially becoming a parent after...
Dramatic police bodycam footage of Gregory and an armed Travis McMichael hunting for Ahmaud Arbery 12 days before the black jogger was killed was played to the jury in their murder trial Friday. The night time video shows both men at the partly-constructed house of neighbor Larry English – after Travis had made a breathless six-minute 911 call saying he had confronted a black male at the home. At one point in the 25-minute footage on Officer Robert Rash's bodycam, Gregory McMichael, 65, tells the cop: 'Travis just walked down there' referring to the back of the property.  He added: 'He's armed by the way.' Both Gregory and Travis, 35, are clearly seen in the footage after Officer Rash was called to the scene in the predominantly white Satilla Shores neighborhood of Brunswick, Georgia on February 11, 2020.  Travis had chased Arbery - although his identity was not known at the time – after seeing him at the property, the jury heard.  Police bodycam footage played in court Friday shows Gregory and Travis McMichael searching for Ahmaud Arbery at a...
