MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Jewish families across Minnesota are celebrating the second night of Hanukkah. The eight-night Festival of Lights is filled with history and folklore. So what is the significance of Hanukkah? And how is it celebrated today? READ MORE: How Can We Best Prevent & Treat Dry Skin?WCCO’s Jeff Wagner learned there are many layers to the holiday. Candles bring light to darkness and for eight nights in the Jewish faith this time of year, that light carries a symbolic and proud story. “Hanukkah means rededication,” said Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman, the senior Rabbi and Temple Israel. Sometimes the spelling of Hanukkah starts with an ‘H’ and other times with a ‘Ch’, why is that? The sound at the beginning of Hanukkah is from the Hebrew letter ‘chet’ which doesn’t translate to English, thus the different spellings. What is the significance of celebrating Hanukkah? “The significance of celebrating Hanukkah is this military conquest,” Zimmerman said. Thousands of years ago in Israel in 163 B.C., Jews fought to overcome oppressive Greek rule and reclaimed their religion in the second...

The Native American Music Awards & Association posted on its website that Shenandoah, described as “Native America’s musical matriarch,” died Monday night in Scottsdale, Arizona, after complications of abdominal bleeding. “Joanne’s beautiful embellishing voice, strong Iroquois traditions, unequivocal elegance and courteous grace made her a prominent role model and highly respected musical matriarch among Native American communities as well as the mainstream music community at large,” the organization said. “She sang with deep roots from her ancestors and flawlessly incorporated her oral traditions into contemporary Folk, Country and Americana formats.” Shenandoah was a member of the Wolf Clan of the Oneida Nation, and grew up in central New York state. She made her recording debut in 1989, and her career went on to include numerous albums and collaborations. Shenandoah won 14 Native American Music Awards, the most for a single artist. Denton Director of Libraries Jennifer Bekker As Daily Kos has covered many times, there are few things mobilizing conservatives during the pandemic like children’s events at libraries. Yes, it’s true—we’re still surviving a global pandemic, and all the while, folks are more than happy to make sure that queer folks aren’t able to do children’s programming—much less have queer books available—at local libraries. Drag Queen story hour? Nope. Trans magician? Not a chance, apparently. We’ve seen reports of people filing criminal reports over children’s books. This November, a public library in Denton, Texas, canceled a book event for kids after a Republican lashed out over the alleged “transgender storytime,” as reported by the Denton Record-Chronicle. Libraries report facing threats all because Republican Don Huffines, who is running for governor of the state, believed the books in question would be about trans kids. The event is called Rainbow StoryTime, which includes books about people with marginalized identities. The books promote self-acceptance, making friends, and respect—all great topics for youth, obviously. The “rainbow” in the title is a reference to people coming together...

Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrated in either November or December. This year the Festival of Lights begins on at sundown on November 28 and ends on the evening of December 6. What is Hanukkah? The holiday begins on the 25th day of Kislev - the ninth month of the year on the Hebrew calendar. Games are often played at Hanukkah, and the most common involves a dreidel (type of spinning top). Hanukkah means "rededication" and honours the Jews' struggle for religious freedom more than 2,500 years ago. It dates back to two centuries before the beginning of Christianity. Legend has it the leaders of a Jewish rebel army called the Maccabees rose up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors. In Hebrew, Hanukkah is...
THANKSGIVING is quickly approaching and shoppers are getting ready to stock up for the holidays. Here's everything you need to know about Walmart's hours for Thanksgiving 2021. 2Walmart is a popular retailer known for their exclusive dealsCredit: Getty Images - Getty When is Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 25, 2021. Each year, the holiday is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Throughout history, the day on which Thanksgiving falls has changed. When Abraham Lincoln was president, Thanksgiving took place on the last Thursday of the month, as it does today. But in 1865, it was moved to the first Thursday of November by Andrew Johnson. Four years later, Ulysses S. Grant named the third Thursday as Thanksgiving. Following Grant's pushback, every Thanksgiving until 1939 was celebrated on the last Thursday of the month. In 1939, Roosevelt moved the holiday back a week once again. After plenty of confusion across the country, Thanksgiving returned to its position as the fourth Thursday of the month in 1942, and has been that way...
EDINA, Minnesota (WCCO) — Whether stores are open or not on Thanksgiving welcome in shoppers searching for deals, one consistent aspect of the holiday is that it’s always on a Thursday. So we wanted to know: Why is Thanksgiving celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November? READ MORE: Food Banks Need More Help Than Ever Feeding Families In Need This Holiday SeasonAccording to the Library of Congress, Native Americans often gave thanks for all that nature provided them. European explorers who traveled to the “New World” in the 1500-1600’s, including Francisco Vasquez de Coronado of Spain, took time to give thanks in form of a large celebration. When was the first famous Thanksgiving meal between the pilgrims and the Native Americans? It happened in 1621, when members of the Plymouth Colony celebrated the autumn harvest with the Wampanoag Tribe. It lasted for three days and included skill competitions. The historic gathering created the framework for Thanksgiving traditions recognized today, such as turkey being the main course. In October of 1678, a court in Boston declared Thursday, Nov. 21 as...

Protesters outside the Kyle Rittenhouse trial make their animus toward 'leftists' and 'pedophiles' explicit. The exultation on right-wing social media following Kyle Rittenhouse’s acquittal has been sickeningly predictable: Mainstream conservatives loudly valorize Rittenhouse as a “hero,” while more extremist voices, applying the same logic, demand that more Americans follow his footsteps—urging the likeminded to take to the street now to begin using guns to “be like Kyle.” They have even appropriated his name for their future plans, voiced in numerous celebratory threads: Any leftist protester shot by a right-wing “patriot” henceforth will have been “Rittenhoused.” As we forecasted, the acquittal is now a beacon-like green light granting permission to violent right-wing extremists to openly wage the kind of “civil war” against “the left”—which ranges from liberal Democrats like Joe Biden to the “antifa” bogeyman they have concocted—that they have been fantasizing about for the past decade. In the words of Charlie Kirk’s interlocutor, it’s the signal that now they “get to use the guns.” The bloodlust has been palpable. Online trolls celebrated that “it’s Open Season on pedo-commies” and boasted that the...

The Florida Gators celebrated their narrow victory over the Samford Bulldogs, an FCS team that dropped 52 points on them on Saturday The Florida Gators had a disastrous past two weeks, as they lost 34-7 to the Georgia Bulldogs and 40-17 to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The liberal media and Democratic politicians have melted down over the anti-Biden rallying cry "Let’s Go Brandon" but the left didn’t always object to insults being hurled at the president.  The phrase became an internet sensation last month after an NBC reporter at a NASCAR Xfinity Series race incorrectly reported that fans in the stands were chanting "Let’s Go Brandon" following a victory by driver Brandon Brown, when they were really shouting, "F--k Joe Biden!" The "F--k Joe Biden!" chants at sports venues across the country have now been replaced with the significantly cleaner "Let’s Go Brandon" chants. However, the chant’s popularity has infuriated the left, resulting in an onslaught of angry tweets, columns and hot takes from liberal pundits. Festival participants reportedly lit bonfires and wore masks and costumes to ward off malevolent spirits. Photos obtained by DailyMail.com showed the couple seated closely in a booth at Manhattan's Knickerbocker Bar & Grill on September 8, 2016, where DeRosa looked adoringly at her boss and flashed her brand-new wedding ring. Photos taken in September 2016 showed Cuomo, 63, getting cozy with his closest...
