An Old Dominion University professor researching “minor-attracted people” (MAPs) agreed to step down from his position Wednesday after their work sparked threats and protests. In a joint statement on Wednesday, Allyn Walker and the university announced their resignation from their position as assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice after the expiration of their contract in 2022. "We have concluded that this outcome is the best way to move forward," ODU President Brian Hemphill said. "We hope today's action helps bring closure for our Monarch family. As we move forward, I encourage all members of the Monarch family to continue our efforts toward healing and civil discourse." Walker's research into "minor attracted people" received public outcry from students and faculty after they said the language destigmatized sex offenders and pedophiles. In the statement, Walker, who is transgender, explained that their research was meant to prevent child sex abuse, attributing the backlash to their trans identity and misrepresentation online.  "My scholarship aims to prevent child sexual abuse," they said in the statement. "That research was mischaracterized by some in the media and online, partly on the basis of my trans identity....
The trans Old Dominion professor who was slammed for saying that pedophiles should be called 'minor-attracted persons' to reduce the stigma attached to them has resigned. Dr. Allyn Walker, who goes by the pronouns they/them, was placed on leave by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, on last week after a swell of outrage over their remarks and views. Walker has written a book that tries to destigmatize pedophilia. It encourages people to refer to pedophiles as 'Minor Attracted People' and says they shouldn't be ostracized for their urges, which they can't help. Walker, who uses the pronouns they/them, said in a recent online interview with the Prostasia Foundation, a child advocacy group that promotes child sex doll usage for pedophiles, that pedophiles did not ask to be sexually attracted to children

Brian O. Hemphill, the school’s president, said in a statement Wednesday that the university’s top priorities are to foster a "caring, inclusive, and supportive community" that respects academic freedom and will not shy away from controversial topics.  Flowers bloom in front of Old Dominion University on March 12, 2020, in Norfolk, Va. An online petition calling for Walker’s removal received nearly 15,000 signatures. It referenced Walker use of the term, "minor attracted persons," and said "(w)e want to be clear that this is pedophilia and should not be considered a sexual preference." NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A university professor in Virginia announced Wednesday they will resign in the wake of threats made over their recently published book, which includes interviews of more than 40 adults who are sexually attracted to minors. The book argues that destigmatizing that attraction would allow more people to seek help and develop coping strategies against committing crimes and ultimately prevent child sexual abuse. “That research was mischaracterized by some in the media and online, partly on the basis of my trans identity,” Old Dominion University professor Allyn Walker said in a statement. “As a result, multiple threats were made against me and the campus community generally,” added Walker, who uses the pronoun “they.” Walker’s book, “A Long, Dark Shadow, Minor-Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity,” drew little attention beyond academics when published in June. The book’s preface cited Walker’s time as a social worker who counseled victims of sexual assault, some of whom were children. “I worry that my readers will somehow think that I am downplaying sexual abuse against children or that I am even...

A university professor has sparked outrage after claiming it is not immoral for adults to be sexually attracted to children and saying pedophiles should be called 'minor-attracted persons'. Allyn Walker, who teaches sociology and criminal justice at Old Dominion University in Virginia, has penned a controversial book attempting to destigmatize pedophilia titled A Long Dark Shadow: Minor-Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity. An online petition calling for Walker to be fired has attracted nearly 3,000 signatures with current students at the college branding their remarks 'gross' and 'weird'. Texas Senator Ted Cruz also waded into the debate, saying: 'Holy c***. What the hell is wrong with ODU?'  But Old Dominion has so far rejected the clamor to remove the professor, only distancing itself from the comments and saying it 'does not endorse or promote crimes against children'.  Walker, who is transgender and uses the pronouns they/them, had said in an online interview with the Prostasia Foundation, a child protection organization: 'A lot of people when they hear the term "pedophile", they automatically assume that it means a sex offender, and...
University professor Allyn Walker wrote a book about people who are attracted to minors, a group he believes is misunderstood and should be destigmatized. Walker is an assistant professor at Old Dominion University and author of the book, “A Long, Dark Shadow: Minor-Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity.” Walker’s book challenges the “widespread assumptions that persons who are preferentially attracted to minors—often referred to as ‘pedophiles'” and looks at the “lives of non-offending minor-attracted persons (MAPs),” a term used to describe the group because it is less stigmatizing than a word like “pedophile,” according to Walker. “When MAPs get the impression that they’re destined to commit an offense against a child, they might not realize that it’s a choice that they have, and that there’s help out there.” https://t.co/62YZGg9tbY pic.twitter.com/1sRHMqcCJ3 — Prostasia Foundation (@ProstasiaInc) November 12, 2021 In the interview with the Prostasia Foundation, Walker made clear that abuse should not be tolerated and argued there is a distinction between a sexual attraction and acting on that sexual attraction. “From my perspective, there is no morality or...

In a lengthy piece exploring the ever-expanding movement of fluid sexual identities, a report claims that lesbians are facing criticism from transgender activists for not wanting to have relationships with biological men who consider themselves “transgender women.” “There’s a common argument that they try and use that goes ‘What if you met a woman in a bar and she’s really beautiful and you got on really well and you went home and you discovered that she has a penis? Would you just not be interested?'” a woman identified in a BBC report as Jennie said. “Yes, because even if someone seems attractive at first you can go off them. I just don’t possess the capacity to be sexually attracted to people who are biologically male, regardless of how they identify,” Jennie said. How ultra-processed foods can affect the brain causes concern among some health experts. They suggest that brain changes caused by a diet rich in these foods can make it difficult to reduce their consumption, especially among younger people. What is the concern? The release of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain creates a sensation of pleasure. It records all pleasure in the same way, whether in response to drugs, money, positive experiences, or food. Neuroscientist Nora Volkow links this to our basic survival instinct: “For most of evolution, food was scarce,” she says, so you needed this motivation to survive. High levels of dopamine release from food are lower and its rate is slower than with many known addictive substances, like drugs. Although this means that food is less addictive than these substances, its accessibility, convenience, and low cost make it difficult to avoid. Research shows that some foods, particularly those high in fat and sugar (like many ultra-processed foods), stimulate a greater sense of reward than others. This can lead to a “dietary pleasure trap,” according to psychologist Douglas...

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Mosquito season has arrived in South Florida but have you ever noticed those pesky insects seem to target some people more than others?
