Brandon Crawford captured the fourth Gold Glove of his career Sunday, the second major honor for his stellar play for the Giants during their resurgent 2021 season. Crawford beat out fellow finalists Francisco Lindor of the Mets and Kevin Newman of the Pirates for the honor as the best defensive shortstop in the National League. Midway through the season, the 34-year-old Crawford was also recognized as an All-Star, and while he isn’t likely to be named the NL’s Most Valuable Player, he will surely field some votes when that award is announced Nov. 18. He’s also a finalist to be the NL’s Silver Slugger at short, which will be announced Thursday. After experiencing a decline since his last All-Star appearance, Crawford shined for the 107-win Giants and the organization rewarded him midway through the season with a two-year extension to stay in San Francisco. Advanced metrics may have preferred Lindor or Newman to Crawford, who graded out below average in some defensive measures. But the eye test, which many players and coaches rely upon for voting...
Succession  Rating: Welcome back to the Logan Roy Show. The vicious, bullying, billionaire mogul, that monstrous thug controlling a global media empire, has completed a hostile takeover of his own TV serial. Despite a Senate probe into his odious business practices and two attempts by his son to oust him, as well as a near-fatal stroke, Logan remains the towering force at the centre of Succession (Sky Atlantic). His four children and the other characters – wives and ex-wives, rivals, henchmen – circle him like anxious jackals and vultures gathering to fight for scraps around a lion gorging on its prey. This was not how Succession was meant to pan out. As actor Brian Cox revealed in the Daily Mail on Saturday, when he signed up he expected that his character would be written out after the first year. Despite a Senate probe into his odious business practices and two attempts by his son to oust him, as well as a near-fatal stroke, Logan remains the towering force at the centre of Succession (Sky Atlantic), writes Christopher Stevens The...
William Shatner poses with crew ahead of history-making space flight, more celeb photos from Oct. 11-16 Stocks open slightly higher as earnings season gets under way The 2021-22 NBA season is almost upon us, but Hot Take SZN is here, and at the end of another eventful offseason we will see how close to the sun we can fly and still stand the swelter of these viewpoints. Narrative is back in Giannis Antetokounmpo's favor. So is validation. Following consecutive MVP campaigns, Antetokounmpo's reputation took a hit in the 2020 NBA playoffs, as the underdog Miami Heat gutted his top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Bucks had fallen well short of their championship goal again, despite operating at an elite level for two straight regular seasons under coach Mike Budenholzer, and Antetokounmpo bore the brunt of the blame. Of the 13 previous multi-time MVPs in league history, all but Karl Malone and Steve Nash ultimately validated those awards with rings, and we know the storylines that still follow them today as a result. The list of three-time...

In the short-term, though, he will compete for the starting center job with last year’s backup, J.C. Hassenauer, as well as veteran B.J. Finney, who returned to the Steelers in March after spending last season with the Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals. For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus (PFF) is optimistic about the impact Green can have on Pittsburgh’s offensive line, ranking him No. 23 among 2021’s projected starting...
#ListenFirst: New virtual event kicks off annual National Week of Conversation UK health minister denies claims of lies over virus response © Provided by CBS Sports Todd Gurley's search for his third NFL home has taken him to Baltimore. The former All-Pro running back will visit the Ravens on Thursday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. A Ram for his first five seasons before spending last season with the Falcons, Gurley also recently visited with the Detroit Lions.  Gurley would join a loaded backfield in Baltimore that already includes JK Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill. The Ravens' rushing attack also includes Lamar Jackson, the first quarterback in NFL history to run for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. With Jackson leading the way, the Ravens rushed for an NFL record 3,296 yards in 2019. Baltimore again eclipsed the 3,000-yard rushing mark in 2020, as Jackson, Edwards, and Dobbins combined to run for 2,533 yards and 22 touchdowns. Baltimore's success on the ground contributed to the team's 25-7 record over the last two seasons.  While Jackson will continue to...
PEP GUARDIOLA clinched a third Prem title with Manchester City and claimed it was his hardest yet. Manchester United’s 2-1 home defeat to Leicester meant the party could finally start on the blue side of town. 3Pep Guardiola has reacted to his third Premier League title winCredit: PA Guardiola called it a “season like no other” after they battled with the effects of the pandemic to keep going in four competitions until late April. City’s boss was thrilled by his side’s playing style and dedicated the success to club legend Colin Bell, who passed away in the New Year, aged 74. Guardiola said: “We will always remember this season for the way that we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players. “They are so special. To come through this season — with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced — and show the consistency we have is remarkable. “It is relentless. Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient....
SAN FRANCISCO — Despite having fans in the stands for the first time in more than a year, Chase Center is still pumping in artificial noise in an effort to re-create a typical full-house. The Seattle Seahawks would be proud. That juxtaposition of real and fake crowd noise is jarring, but there are moments of respite — opportunities for the mere thousands in attendance to make their voices fully heard. Like, for instance, when Steph Curry comes up to the free-throw line. The chants of “M-V-P” on Friday and Sunday night were clear-throated and valid. But for Curry to actually win his third MVP award, two things — two extremely possible things — need to happen: Curry must win the scoring title and the Warriors need to finish the season outside the play-in tournament. Yes, this seems like a lot, but it’s all or nothing for Curry, whose MVP odds currently sit at 17-to-1per Draft Kings. Why both? I implore you to look at this resume: Related Articles Kurtenbach: Best thing to come...

PORT ST. LUCIE — J.D. Davis came to spring training with the comfort of knowing he’s considered more a third baseman than left fielder. That said, will he be the Mets’ primary third baseman heading into the season? It’s a question that might not be solved until camp’s conclusion, after an offseason in which the Mets passed on acquiring a proven commodity at the position, such as Nolan Arenado, Kris Bryant or Justin Turner. With Jeff McNeil, Jonathan Villar and Luis Guillorme among the infield options who can shuffle between second and third base, it’s not a forgone conclusion the position belongs to Davis, whose defense has been suspect throughout his major league career. “There’s plans to give him a lot of playing time [at third], of course, in the regular season,” manager Luis Rojas said Wednesday after a team workout. “He might be the guy that gets the most playing time there. We still want to see camp going and competition going.” Davis, after emerging as an offensive force in 2019, regressed at the plate last season, when he...
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nazem Kadri scored with 41 seconds remaining in the third period, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night. Moments after Marc-Andre Fleury stopped Mikko Rantanen’s backhand with 45.3 seconds left, the Avalanche — who rank ninth in the league in faceoff win percentage (52.0%) — got the better end of a faceoff from the right circle, eventually setting up Kadri, who was able to lift a loose puck into the net for his second game-winner of the season. RELATED: Nikola Jokic Scores 43, But Nuggets Open Road Trip With Loss To Celtics “We just tried to keep it simple,” Kadri said. “Told the D-men to get the puck and we hopped on the rebound.” Nathan MacKinnon and Brandon Saad also scored for the Avalanche. Philip Grubauer stopped 27 shots. Grubauer, who led all goaltenders with six wins in the month of January, is tied for third with eight wins this season, ranks fourth with a 1.64 goals-against average among netminders with at least four starts, and sixth...
Let’s jump ahead a year and assume the Raiders didn’t get to 10 wins and failed to make the playoffs in 2021. That would make it 19 times in 20 years they didn’t reach that benchmark, so it’s not exactly a long shot. If it happens, a fan base of which many are already viewing coach Jon Gruden with skepticism will again clamor for change at the top. More likely, it would be general manager Mike Mayock being the fall guy as this year’s Paul Guenther. Mayock becomes mostly invisible once the season starts, receding into the background with Gruden doing all the talking. That was the case again this season as the Raiders got to 6-3 before a demoralizing crash and burn en route to 8-8 and a meager one-game improvement over 2019. But as Mayock kicks into gear for his biggest offseason, he’s made the media rounds, delivering essentially the same message to the The Athletic, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Raiders.com and a couple of radio outlets at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala....
Washington Wizards star Russell Westbrook is the first player who pops up when thinking about NBA triple-doubles. Brodie enjoyed a historic and third consecutive triple-double of the 2021 season when the Wizards took on the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. He became the first player since Oscar Robertson to record triple-doubles in the first three games of the season. Robertson achieved this feat in 1961 while playing for the Cincinnati Royals (now Sacramento Kings). Westbrook missed the third game against the Orlando Magic but came back in the subsequent fixture to replicate his brilliance. He is currently averaging 19 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 12.7 assists per game. That puts him at the #3 spot for rebounding leaders in the league, and the #2 spot for assists leaders in the league. Russell Westbrook needs to provide more than just triple-doubles The Wizards have lost every game they’ve played this season, despite Westbrook scoring a triple-double in each fixture. He has been stuffing the stat sheet individually, but the Wizards are yet to open their account this season. The main reason behind the...
Record number of COVID-19 deaths hit Illinois nursing homes Fired attorney Sidney Powell advising Trump to chart a scorched-earth course Aaron Rodgers hits 40 passing TD for a record third time in his career The last time Aaron Rodgers threw 40 touchdown passes in an NFL season, it was 2016, when he hit that number exactly and led the league. The time before that? 2011, when he threw 45 touchdown passes to just six interceptions, put up the best single-season passer rating ever at 122.5, and won the NFL’s AP MVP, PFWA MVP, and Bert Bell awards. A decade after that historic season, Rodgers is playing every bit as well as he was then, and the Packers are certainly benefiting from it. © Provided by Touchdown Wire Green Bay came into Saturday night’s game against the Panthers as the NFC’s one-seed with a 10-3 record, they’re on pace to have more touchdown passes than punts, and Rodgers had a passer rating of 119.7 — which would put him third all-time in a single-season sense, behind his own record, and...
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — In the history of the NFL, there have been some explosive dual-threat quarterbacks. Some have been faster than Cam Newton, some have been more electric than Cam Newton, but none have been as prolific as Cam Newton when it comes to finding the end zone on the ground. The quarterback accentuated that reality by rushing for 46 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against the Chargers on Sunday. The first TD — which capped off a nearly perfect opening drive — gave Newton 10 rushing touchdowns on the season. It marked the third time in Newton’s career that he’s rushed for double-digit touchdowns in a single season, and the first time he’s done it since his MVP season in 2015. His other time reaching double digits came in his rookie season in 2011, when he rushed for 14 — which still stands as a career high. New York Yankees: Could Gio Urshela be the Yankees next Graig Nettles? Find out here By: William Parlee June 30, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesThe New York Yankees were faced with a dilemma during the 2019 season when star slugger and third baseman Miguel Andujar went on the IL.  Andujar went down with a year-ending labrum injury at the beginning of the 2019 campaign; the fledgling season appeared to hang in the balance. Andujar was having trouble throwing from third, but the Yankees thought they could still keep his big bat in the lineup.  That turned out not to be the case as he elected to have labrum shoulder surgery. The New York Yankees had no one to replace him.  Temporarily they used DJ LeMahieu, but they needed to find a permanent replacement.  They searched about to find someone that would be adequate.  The ended up bringing up a minor leaguer from their Scranton Wilkes/Barre Triple-A affiliate Rail Riders.  That player was Giovanny Urshela with a...
