A 90-minute performance of off-the-ball intensity by Cristiano Ronaldo. A rare clean sheet. And something even more unlikely — a goal by Fred, off his weaker right foot. Ralf Rangnick is already working his magic at Manchester United. The 63-year-old German led England’s biggest club into a game for the first time on Sunday, and his imprint was all over United’s unfussy 1-0 win over Crystal Palace that ended with a chant of “We love you Rangnick, we do” by home fans toward their new manager who is sometimes referred to as the “Godfather of Gegenpressing.” Indeed, United’s players pressed high and hard in a tweaked 4-2-2-2 formation, with even the 36-year-old Ronaldo showing a work ethic that belied his age. “Cristiano Ronaldo’s work off the ball, chapeau,” Rangnick said with a smile. But it wasn’t world soccer’s most prolific scorer who clinched the hard-fought win to kick off the latest new era at United since Alex Ferguson’s retirement eight years ago. That honor fell to Fred, the oft-maligned Brazil midfielder whose work rate and endeavor is likely to make...
GAINEVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with negotiations says new Florida coach Billy Napier agreed to a seven-year, $51.8 million contract that makes him the fifth-highest-paid coach in the Southeastern Conference. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday night because neither Florida nor Napier has publicly released contract details. Napier will make $7.1 million in his first season and will get a $100,000 raise annually before each of the remaining six years, the person said. Only Alabama’s Nick Saban ($9.75 million), Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher ($9 million), new LSU coach Brian Kelly ($8.6 million) and Georgia’s Kirby Smart ($7.13 million) are due to make more in the SEC next season. The Gators are expected to provide Napier’s full memorandum of understanding when he’s formally introduced Sunday afternoon in Gainesville. Napier signed a new contract at Louisiana-Lafayette before the 2021 season that nearly doubled his pay, raising his total compensation to $2 million annually. That deal included a $3 million buyout. His new contract is similar to what the Gators had been paying former coach...
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Ailing running back Melvin Gordon III was unable to practice Saturday and was ruled out for the Denver Broncos’ Sunday night showdown at Kansas City with the AFC West lead on the line. That means rookie running back Javonte Williams will get his first career start when the Broncos (6-5) face the Chiefs (7-4) with a chance to move atop the division. Gordon, the Broncos’ leading touchdown scorer, is dealing with shoulder and hip injuries that prevented him from practicing all week Coach Vic Fangio said during the week that if Gordon couldn’t play, Williams would get the bulk of the carries against the Chiefs with veteran running back Mike Boone also in the mix. On Saturday, the Broncos promoted running back Damarea Crockett from their practice squad and waived wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland. Crockett is a first-year pro from Missouri who has bounced between Denver’s practice and active roster. He has appeared in eight games with the Broncos this season, totaling 130 snaps on special teams. Gordon has five TD runs and two TD...
No one is sleeping on Packers star outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith, but a looming return was not something we expected just yet. On the Packers’ bye week, fans might’ve received a helpful hint in terms of Smith’s health heading into the latter end of the season. The former Pro Bowl outside linebacker has been out since the first game of the season. Along with Smith, Jaire Alexander could also be set to return. Even without their two playmakers, the Packers’ defense has been formidable, ranking top-10 in several key categories. However, the injury bug may finally be catching up to them, as the last two weeks, Green Bay gave up 28 points to the Los Angeles Rams in an eventual win and 34 points in a loss to the division-rival Vikings. Packers: When will Za’Darius Smith return?Smith has an opt out after this season, but it’s unlikely he’ll exercise that coming off injury. The Packers will then owe Smith $14.5 million, with an enormous cap hit to boot. Expect Brian Gutekunst to try and push that cap hit down the...
NEW YORK (AP) — Christian Braun had a career-high 31 points, Ochai Agbaji scored 23 and No. 8 Kansas emphatically turned back a second-half charge to beat St. John’s 95-75 on Friday night in the first basketball game at new UBS Arena, home of the NHL’s New York Islanders. Senior forward David McCormack, off to a slow start this season, was a force inside with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (6-1), who have bounced back from a one-point loss to Dayton last week with consecutive double-digit wins. Remy Martin added 12 points and five assists, and Kansas clamped down on defense late in a game that was part of the annual Big East-Big 12 Battle. Julian Champagnie scored all but four of his 24 points after halftime for the Red Storm (5-2), who were facing their first ranked opponent of the season. CHICAGO (CBS) — Justin Fields will miss his second consecutive game as he recovers from a rib injury, and Andy Dalton will get the start again on Sunday when the Chicago Bears host the NFL-leading Arizona Cardinals. Bears head coach Matt Nagy said Fields is making progress from a rib injury he suffered in a Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but will not play on Sunday at Soldier Field. READ MORE: Two Shot At CTA Red Line Station At GarfieldDalton will make his second consecutive start, and fourth overall this season, while Nick Foles will serve as the backup. Dalton began the season as the team’s No. 1 quarterback, but gave way to Fields after suffering a knee injury in the Week 2 loss to the Bengals. While Fields returned to the practice field earlier this week, Dalton got the starter’s reps, so it comes as little surprise that Fields will miss at least one more game. Jay Jay Phillips, a musician known best for competing on "America's Got Talent," has died from COVID-19. He was 30 years old. His band confirmed the news Friday on social media. "It is with great sadness we inform you all of the loss of our bandmate/brother/and friend @jayjayrocks. It still doesn’t feel real and we would give anything to change it. Please respect the family, as well as our wishes as we take our time to grieve and process this detrimental loss," the band penned on Instagram. The NFL suspended Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown three games for misrepresenting his vaccination status, but according to ESPN’S Stephen A. Smith, it should’ve been more. Brown was accused by his former personal chef of obtaining a fake vaccine card to avoid NFL protocols this season. The wide receiver denied the claim at first, but has since waived his right to appeal the suspension handed down by the NFL. “There’s not even a rule in the NFL prohibiting you as a player from playing if you’re not vaccinated,” Smith noted Friday morning on First Take. “What it says is that you have to go through additional safety protocols that could be a bit more arduous…but you don’t HAVE to get vaccinated in order to play.” “And still, STILL you lied,” Smith ranted. “He might be vaccinated now, but the fact of the matter is you wouldn’t be suspended if you were vaccinated at the time that the NFL was investigating the matter.” According to reports, after using the fake vaccine card, Brown ultimately decided to get the jab...
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Take all the passers in NFL history who have attempted at least 75 throws in a month, and nobody was ever more accurate than Peyton Manning was for Indianapolis in December 2008. The No. 2 name on that list might be a surprise. Tua Tagovailoa can’t miss right now, and the Miami Dolphins suddenly can’t lose. He completed 80.5% of his throws in November, the second-best month in NFL history in terms of accuracy, and the Dolphins (5-7) will seek a fifth consecutive win on Sunday when they play host to the New York Giants (4-7), who will be without starting quarterback Daniel Jones because of a neck injury. “It always feels good winning, but the thing we can’t do as a team is be satisfied with the win the previous week,” Tagovailoa said. “That’s the game of football that we play. You enjoy it for that day, that night, come into work, learn from your mistakes and then you’re really moving forward from it. I would say if you can’t do that, it’s hard...
No Ohio State. No Michigan State. No Penn State, Wisconsin, or even Northwestern. Even Nebraska has made it to Indianapolis during the first 10 years of the Big Ten Championship Game. In year 11, the Michigan Wolverines finally make their inaugural appearance as they face West Division Champ, Iowa. Iowa hasn’t appeared in the game since 2015 when they lost a low scoring slugfest to the eventual champ, Michigan State. Both Michigan and Iowa had their own unique path to their division crown. Michigan lost to their in-state rival Michigan State on Halloween weekend and needed help from Ohio State and Purdue to eliminate the Spartans from the title race. Then to end the season, UM consummated their East crown with their first victory over OSU since 2011. You can put the rumors to bed, as Kentucky and Mark Stoops have agreed to a multi-year contract extension.  Has there ever been a more wild 72 hours in college football? It’s been a game of musical chairs for head coaches, with Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly headlining things with their moves to USC and LSU, respectively. Rumors have been flying that Kentucky’s Mark Stoops could be making a move too. Well, that’s not going to happen. On Tuesday afternoon, the school announced that Stoops has agreed to a contract extension that will run through the 2028 campaign. “I’m excited to continue to build this program to national prominence, Stoops said. We’re on our way and I’m more confident in Kentucky football than I’ve ever been.” As rumors swirled about Stoops being a candidate at Florida and LSU in recent weeks, those rumors escalated after the Oklahoma job opened with Lincoln Riley leaving for USC.Mark Stoops staying put with Kentucky is massive news for the WildcatsDespite Stoops being a logical candidate to helm the program his brother Bob did for so...
BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots have won six straight games, turning their season around and getting themselves smack dab in the middle of the fight for the top seed in the AFC. It’s been an improbable run, and it has the team and the fans rather excited. But all of those positive vibes can come crashing down if the Patriots take the field Monday night in Orchard Park and get soundly beaten by the Bills. That’s kind of how life works in the NFL. With that in mind, it feels safe to say this is the biggest game of the year for both teams. In the Patriots’ case, a win in Buffalo will create a slight cushion in the AFC East while building tremendous amounts of confidence within the locker room as New England heads into the bye. For the Bills, a win will satisfy the psychotic energy from the 71,000 crazed Bills fans packing Highmark Stadium (when did they start calling it that?) on what’s sure to be a frigid Monday evening. It will also vault the Bills back into...
LSU formally announced the hiring of Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly on Tuesday and said they have agreed to a 10-year contract worth $95 million plus incentives. The hiring of Kelly — who has led Notre Dame for the past 12 seasons and eclipsed Knute Rockne for career victories with the storied Fighting Irish — came together on Monday night in yet another blockbuster coaching move in college football. “Brian Kelly is the epitome of a winner,” LSU athletic director Scott Woodward said. “He has built and sustained success at every program he’s led, from multiple undefeated regular seasons and National Coach of the Year honors to (Division II) national titles and College Football Playoff berths. His credentials and consistency speak for themselves.” Kelly replaces Ed Orgeron, a Louisiana native who won a national title at LSU just two seasons ago with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow leading the Tigers to a 15-0 record. Orgeron has gone 11-11 since and agreed in October to a $17 million buyout that would have him step down at the end of this...
NEW YORK (AP) — Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Elena Ferrante adaptation “The Lost Daughter” won four Gotham Awards including best feature film at the 31st Gotham Awards, the annual New York independent film celebration that serves as a boozy kickoff to Oscar season. Gyllenhaal won breakthrough director and best screenplay for her directorial debut, and star Olivia Colman shared the award for outstanding lead performance with Frankie Faison, “The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain,” a drama based on the 2011 police shooting in White Plains, New York. “The Lost Daughter,” a Netflix release, opens in theaters Dec. 17. As one of the first stops in the long march to the Oscars, Monday evening’s Gothams was the first real attempt since the pandemic began to summon all the season’s usual glitz and pomp. Stars including Kristen Stewart, Tessa Thompson and Dakota Johnson walked the red carpet. Inside the crowded banquet hall, attendees were required to provide proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test. Last year’s Gotham Awards (where “Nomadland” won the top award) was held virtually, with winners accepting awards by Zoom...

Getty Mike Tomlin reacts from the sideline during Steelers-Bengals game. Mike Tomlin was not a happy camper after his Pittsburgh Steelers got the beat down of the season at the hands of rival Cincinnati Bengals. Nor should he have been. His team was manhandled in all three phases of the game and showed no sense of urgency over the 60 minutes of play. If the Bengals first drive was any indicator of things to come, it was going to be a long game. And it was. Cincinnati opened the game on a 10-play, 75-yard offensive drive that lasted seven minutes and ended with a quarterback scramble for a touchdown by Joe Burrow — his first of the season. The German government suggested big crowds at sports events should be reduced Monday after a weekend which featured one empty-stadium Bundesliga game and another with a crowd of 50,000. Germany leaves policy on sports events during the coronavirus pandemic to the state governments, but there are calls for a more unified approach. Leipzig had the first top-division game of the season in an empty stadium Sunday, losing 3-1 to Bayer Leverkusen, because its home eastern state of Saxony has Germany’s highest infection rates. The day before, Cologne was allowed 50,000 in attendance for its 4-1 win over local rival Borussia Mönchengladbach. Some other states have allowed crowds, but at sharply reduced capacity. Around the country, entry is typically restricted to people with proof of vaccination or proof they recently recovered from a coronavirus infection. Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said it is “really hard to understand why 50,000 people are coming together in a football stadium, even if it was approved,” at a time when experts are saying that contacts need to be reduced. “This inequality...

His lack of football led to a spell on loan at Besiktas in the 2019/20 campaign. And now speculation has been mounting that he will be on his way again once the January transfer window opens. Elneny is out of contract in June and will be able to leave Arsenal for nothing. That led to reports that the North London side were willing to rip up the ace’s deal early and let him leave for free once the window re-opens.. He had allegedly already agreed a package to join El Ahly in his homeland. Most read in Premier LeagueLive BlogFOOTY...

LOS ANGELES — Whether it was a matchup of the league’s top defensive teams living up to the billing or two teams that never woke up for a Sunday matinee is in the eye of the beholder. To Jordan Poole, it was merely an opportunity. His flurry of points at the end of the third quarter awakened the Warriors and propelled them to their best-in-the-NBA 18th win in 20 games, 105-90, over the Los Angeles Clippers. The third-year guard pulled up from 3 and swooshed it home. He did it again after Paul George matched him on the other end, and again after another answer by the Clippers star. In the final 2:35 of the quarter, Poole scored 12 points and extended the Warriors’ lead from one point to seven entering the final quarter. He left it to Steph Curry to ice the win. Enraged by a non-call on a drive to the basket, Curry drew a technical foul that only fired him up further. Curry drained three more 3s while the Warriors mounted a 21-7...

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi was worried about a letdown. Kenny Pickett wasn't about to let that happen again. Pickett threw for four touchdowns to break the Pittsburgh school record for scoring passes in a season, and the 20th-ranked Panthers beat Syracuse 31-14 on Saturday night for their fourth straight win heading into next week's Atlantic Coast Conference championship against Wake Forest. "Offensively, we knew we had a good test coming in," Pickett said. "Our defense did a great job slowing them down and we kind of just got into our rhythm on offense." SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Kenny Pickett threw for four touchdowns to break the Pittsburgh school record for scoring passes in a season, and the 20th-ranked Panthers beat Syracuse 31-14 on Saturday night. Pickett boosted his season total to 40 touchdown passes, three more than the previous record set by Dan Marino in 1981 and matched by Rod Rutherford in 2003, and his career total to 79, equaling Marino’s mark. Pickett finished 28 of 38 for 209 yards with one interception. Kenny Pickett broke a 40-year-old single-season passing record set by none other than Pitt football legend Dan Marino. It was a record 40 years in the breaking, as Pitt football star quarterback Kenny Pickett has thrown for more touchdown passes in a season than Dan Marino. Though this may be a different era of college football, Pickett has drawn a lot of comparisons to Marino this season, and for good reason. In a relatively weak quarterback draft class, Pickett has more often than not asserted his dominance over the competition. He can run it and he can spin it with the best of them. An undefeated season slipped away from No. 15 UTSA on a rain-soaked Saturday in the Dallas area. The Roadrunners didn't seem terribly surprised. Whether it was losing three fumbles early with a slick ball or playing a hot opponent a week after staying perfect on a last-second touchdown, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor sensed the odds getting worse. North Texas backs DeAndre Torrey and Ikaika Ragsdale combined for five touchdowns while UTSA quarterback Frank Harris had two turnovers and didn't play after halftime in the Mean Green's 45-23 rout of the Roadrunners. "I think human nature is we probably weren’t as juiced up as we were last week," Traylor said, referring to a 34-31 victory over UAB. "But it wasn’t like a bad effort. They were at a 10 and we probably played at an eight. And you turn it over three times in the weather, you’re going to get embarrassed, which we did today." DENTON, Texas (AP) — No. 15 UTSA’s undefeated season ended in a blowout as North Texas running backs DeAndre Torrey and Ikaika Ragsdale combined for five touchdowns in a 45-23 rout of the Roadrunners on Saturday. Quarterback Frank Harris had two of UTSA’s three lost fumbles among six overall before sitting the second half at UNT’s rain-soaked Apogee Stadium, a 10-year-old facility where a Top 25 team had never played. UTSA (11-1, 7-1 Conference USA), which never started with more than five consecutive wins in the program’s first nine seasons, is still hosting the conference championship game Friday night against either Western Kentucky or Marshall. No. 1 Georgia and fourth-ranked Cincinnati are the remaining undefeated FBS teams. The Roadrunners, ranked 10th nationally in rushing defense, had given up six touchdowns on the ground all season. The Mean Green (6-6, 5-3) matched that late in the third quarter of their fifth consecutive victory that followed a six-game losing streak as UNT earned bowl eligibility. Ragsdale, a redshirt freshman, had a career-high 146 yards and two touchdowns as North Texas’ conference-leading rushing...
CHICAGO — The Sharks are not terribly disappointed with where they stand one-quarter of the way through the 82-game season. They’re not all that thrilled, either. “After the amount of hockey we’ve played,” Sharks coach Bob Boughner said, “I think we’re probably where we deserve to be.” The Sharks enter Sunday’s game with the Chicago Blackhawks with a modest 10-9-1 record. That’s better than their mark of 6-7-1 at the quarter-pole of the 56-game 2020-2021 season, but, as of Saturday morning, they were still four points back of third place in the Pacific Division and one point back of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The top three teams in each division, plus the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, regardless of division, make the playoffs. The Sharks have dealt with a COVID-19 outbreak, a road-heavy first month of the schedule, and the off-ice drama involving forward Evander Kane, who, as of Monday, is eligible to practice and play again. “It feels like it’s a lot more than 20 games, honestly,” Sharks captain...

Getty DeAndre Bembry, Nets (right) One of the surprising aspects of this season for the Brooklyn Nets—and there have been many—as been the play of the team’s defense, which has held opponents to 104.7 points per 100 possessions, sixth in the NBA. That’s made up for a decidedly so-so offensive performance from the team. The Nets rank 11th in the NBA in offensive rating, at 109.1. Last year, the Nets’ defense was unsightly for a contending team, allowing 113.1 points per 100 possessions, 22nd in the league. The offense was a juggernaut, though, with a rating of 117.3, first in the NBA. Credit for the improvement is in part coming from an unexpected place—star point guard James Harden, who has been more engaged this season than he typically is on the defensive end. And credit for Harden’s defensive improvement just might go to reserve wing DeAndre Bembry. Just ask Bembry and he’ll tell you. “If you want to win it’s always for the bigger picture,” Bembry said, per the New York Post’s Brian Lewis. “So I came in...

His wife, Collette Bloom Culp, announced “on behalf of our family and with a broken heart” the five-time All-Pro’s death. “The entire Pro Football Hall of Fame family mourns the passing of Curley Culp. He was a wonderful man of great integrity who respected the game of football and how it applied to everyday life,” Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said. “Curley’s humility and grace were always apparent.” Culp was considered one of the strongest players in the NFL during his playing career, though his position on the interior of the defensive line meant his play often went unnoticed. He was chosen to participate in six Pro Bowls, and he was second to Steelers cornerback Mel Blount for AP Defensive Player of the Year after the 1975 season....
Former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops made his thoughts known on how Steve Sarkisian’s first season with the Texas Longhorns should be seen.  Bob Stoops is a legendary college head coach. He’s seen and experienced all sorts of success throughout his coaching career, much of which was spent winning at a very high level that he was able to sustain for years with the Oklahoma Sooners. Stoops knows what it’s like to be a winner. He’s also able to easily identify when a team is struggling and what’s going on. With the Texas Longhorns, it doesn’t take being a college coaching legend to know there’s something going wrong. That’s observable from space. But Stoops offered an interesting critical look at how things have gone during Steve Sarkisian’s first season in Austin. As The Dallas Morning News reports, Stoops was very critical of the Texas football program from top to bottom. According to The Dallas Morning News, Stoops said the following prior to Texas’ win over the Kansas State Wildcats on Friday: “This is a complete disaster. The administration, the coaches,...
Getty Dennis Schroder of the Boston Celtics. Dennis Schroder’s contract situation continues to be a discussion point among NBA insiders, analysts, and fans. Everybody has their own take on the likelihood hood he remains with the Boston Celtics beyond this season. In his latest piece for The Athletic, front office insider John Hollinger lists Schroder among next summer’s top free agents and laments the Celtic’s chances of retaining the speedy gunslinger. “The Celtics don’t have Bird rights on Schröder and don’t have cap space, so their best legal offer tops out at $7.06 million for next season. It’s not a shock; this was always destined to be a one-year marriage of convenience,” Hollinger explains during his article. It’s worth noting that at the time of writing, Hollinger lists Schroder at 19th in his list of free agents, residing in the fourth tier, which the insider eloquently labels “The best of the rest.” Schroder has been a breath of fresh air for a Celtics team that needed additional ball-handling and scoring off the bench. At the same time, he’s...
Italy is reopening its slopes to recreational skiers after one season lost and another abbreviated by the pandemic. Here is a glance at how the season is proceeding in Europe’s Alpine nations. ITALY Italy is reopening for the 2021-2022 season after a near-complete closure last season and an early closure in 2020 after Italy became the first country in the West to detect local transmission of the coronavirus. Government regulations require a health pass to access areas with closed lifts, which can be obtained with proof of vaccination, having recovered from the virus or a negative test in the last 24 hours. The new system launches on Saturday in the first two ski areas to open. Glacier skiing opened already earlier in the month, while the ski season in Italy officially opens Dec. 4. ____ SWITZERLAND Switzerland, which kept its ski slopes open last year, is sticking to its plans again this year. The season has started in pockets that have gotten patches of early snowfall, though it’s not expected to switch into full gear before mid-December....
LONDON (AP) — Newcastle’s winless start to the Premier League season extended to 13 games after a 2-0 loss at Arsenal on Saturday. Bukayo Saka and the player who replaced him as a substitute, Gabriel Martinelli, scored goals in the second half to consign last-place Newcastle, which has recently come under Saudi ownership, to a seventh loss of the season. Arsenal stayed in fifth place but is now level on points with fourth-place West Ham as the team continues its recovery from losing its opening three games of the season. Saka ran onto a deft pass from left back Nuno Tavares and shot low and across goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into the far corner to put Arsenal ahead in the 56th minute. Saka appeared to hurt his left leg soon after his goal and, after briefly playing on, was replaced by Martinelli in the 64th. The 20-year-old Brazilian scored within two minutes. Sprinting onto a lofted pass from right back Takehiro Tomiyasu over the Newcastle defense, Martinelli sent a volley past Dubravka with one of his first touches of the ball....
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has been cleared to participate in full team activities, the club announced Friday, but there remains no specific timetable on when the 2019 top overall draft choice out of Duke will play. The upgrade in Williamson’s status came after he underwent imaging Wednesday on his right foot, which he fractured during an offseason workout. Dr. Richard Ferkel of Southern California Orthopedic Institute and Dr. Scott Montgomery of Ochsner Health subsequently studied Williamson’s scans before he was cleared for expanded work in practice. Williamson participated in four-on-four, full-court work Friday. He will “continue his progression towards returning to play,” a written statement provided by the Pelicans said. “An estimated date to return to game action has not been determined.” The Pelicans lost 16 of their first 20 games without Williamson, an All-Star last season who led New Orleans with 27 points per game. New Orleans was playing at Utah on Friday night in the first of three road games in four days. When the team initially disclosed Williamson’s injury at the start of...
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions, for all the mistakes they had made Thursday against the Chicago Bears, still had one chance to pick up their first win of the season. Detroit led 14-13, but the Bears had driven to the Lions 16 with 1:54 to play. It was third-and-9, so coach Dan Campbell called a timeout to give his team its best chance. Get a stop – hopefully on an incomplete pass – and after Chicago’s chip-shot field goal, get the ball back with 1:45 to play and two timeouts. Given Detroit’s pop-gun offense, it wasn’t an ideal strategy, but it had a chance. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn gave linebacker Alex Anzalone the play call, and the Lions lined up for one of their biggest plays of the season. These Lions don’t make the big plays. Half the defense was in one formation and the other half was in a different one. The call had two options depending on how Chicago lined up, and several players read it the wrong way. “There were a couple of substitution errors and...
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Nick Bosa was pretty dominant as a rookie in 2019 when his pass rush skills helped the San Francisco 49ers make it to the Super Bowl. Here’s some bad news for the rest of the NFL: Bosa feels he’s even better this season, a year removed from reconstructive knee surgery. He some numbers to back it up. After earning his third multi-sack game of the season last week at Jacksonville, Bosa has already set a career high with 10 sacks, surpassing the nine he had in 2019 when he won Defensive Rookie of the Year. “I think I’ve definitely improved a lot,” Bosa said. “I think I’m starting to get the hang of just how to really get sacks, get numbers. My rookie year I was just out there rushing, trying to win every time, and it worked well. But now I’m really getting the hang of how the sack leaders in the league do it. They go out there with a plan and know when their opportunities are going to come, and they’re...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Julio Jones is on injured reserve. A.J. Brown is out with a chest injury. Marcus Johnson’s season is done after being put on injured reserve for the second time this season. The receiving corps Ryan Tannehill and the Tennessee Titans thought they’d have this season currently is a thin, patchwork group as they prepare to visit the New England Patriots on Sunday. The quarterback is busy working to make sure everyone is on the same page — quickly. “It’s hard, no doubt about it,” Tannehill said. “We have to communicate really, really well. Be on the same page in the film room and the installs and make sure we are communicating everything clearly. Communicating exactly what I am expecting. If we do get some full speed reps, taking advantage of every rep we get.” Brown, the Titans’ leading receiver and a 2020 Pro Bowler, left last week’s loss to the Texans in the third quarter and hasn’t practiced all week. He was declared out Friday. Johnson hurt his right hamstring early in that...
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — There’s no more need for Wake Forest to wonder about the possible championship scenarios. And no more safety net. Win, and the Demon Deacons will play in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game against Pittsburgh. Lose to Boston College on Saturday, and their hopes of a first Atlantic Division title since 2006 are gone. “The biggest thing is we just know what’s at stake this game: Win and you’re in. Win, or go home,” defensive lineman Miles Fox said this week as Wake Forest prepared for the regular-season finale in Chestnut Hill. “I think that’s what’s motivating everybody this week,” Fox said. “Everyone knows how big of a game this is, and we have no choice but to be at our best.” The Demon Deacons (9-2, 6-1 ACC) had a chance to clinch the division title last week, but lost 48-27 to Clemson. That left open the possibility that the two-loss Tigers could play in the conference championship game for the seventh year in a row. But Wake Forest still had the clear path:...
GAINESVILLE (AP) — Running back Malik Davis, one of a dozen Florida players dealing with a second coaching change in their college careers, got a chance to address teammates earlier this week. His message was simple and succinct. READ MORE: Researchers May Have Cracked The Code For The Best Kind Of Cuddle“Even though we don’t have the same goals that we had at the beginning of the year, we still have a lot to play for,” Davis said. “We have one another to play for, our families, the name on the back of the jersey.” It’s about all the Gators (5-6) left this season. Florida will host rival Florida State (5-6) with bowl eligibility and bragging rights on the line Saturday. It’s the first time in 40 years that the programs with a combined six national championships will play a winner-in, loser-out regular-season finale. It would be a surprise to see the Gators flop considering they fired coach Dan Mullen last week. Mullen was let go following his fourth loss in five games, a 24-23 overtime stunner at Missouri. It...
No. 14 Texas A&M (8-3, 4-3 SEC, CFP No. 15) at LSU (5-6, 2-5), Saturday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN). Line: Texas A&M by 6 1/2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Series record: LSU leads 33-22-3. WHAT’S AT STAKE? Texas A&M can improve its bowl options by finishing the regular season with nine victories and keep alive a shot at its first 10-win season since it went 11-2 in 2012. LSU needs a victory to reach standard bowl eligibility (although there’s a slim possibility it could be asked to fill a potential bowl vacancy at 5-7) and avoid its first losing season since 1999. KEY MATCHUP Texas A&M’s running back tandem of Isaiah Spiller (third in the SEC with 984 yards rushing) and versatile Devon Achane (1,328 all-purpose yards), against an LSU defense led by Butkus Award finalist Damone Clark. LSU has allowed 265 yards rushing combined in its past three games (vs. Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana-Monroe). Clark leads the nation in tackles with 125. PLAYERS TO WATCH Texas A&M: Freshman WR Moose Muhammad had a breakout performance last week...
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Pitts’ last trip to Jacksonville ended in painful fashion. The star tight end was knocked out of Florida’s game against rival Georgia on a vicious hit a little more than a year ago. Pitts suffered a concussion, and his helmet twisted so sideways that his face mask fractured his septum. He had surgery, missed two weeks and considered opting out of the rest of the season. Pitts ended up playing three more games before turning pro and becoming the fourth overall pick in the NFL draft. He returns to Jacksonville for the first time since when the reeling Atlanta Falcons (4-6) take on the woeful Jaguars (2-8) on Sunday. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one like that,” Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said. Pitts has been as good as advertised as a rookie, catching 43 passes for 635 yards and a touchdown. He has the third-most receptions for a first-year tight end through 10 games in NFL history. Although he’s cooled over the past month – he has 12 receptions for 164 yards in...
Alabama’s recent trips to Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium have been filled with uncharacteristic misadventures for the college football powerhouse. The third-ranked Crimson Tide (10-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference, No. 3 CFP) have been bedeviled by pick-sixes and even a Kick Six when visiting the Tigers (6-5, 3-4). “We’ve kind of been our own worst enemy,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. Auburn may need a little help Saturday as well with the Tide coming in as 19 1/2-point favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The Tigers are trying to avoid ending coach Bryan Harsin’s first regular season with four consecutive losses. Alabama has already locked in an SEC Championship Game matchup with No. 1 Georgia, with designs on making the playoffs. It’s the Iron Bowl debut for Harsin, a former Boise State player and coach. “I told the players I’m excited to coach in this game,” he said. “This is one of the reasons why I wanted to be at Auburn. Go back before I was ever a part of this program, the Iron Bowl has been a game that everybody’s watched. ...

No. 13 BYU (9-2, No. 13 CFP) at USC (4-6), Saturday at 10:30 p.m. EST (ESPN). Line: BYU by 6 1/2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Series record: USC leads 2-1. WHAT’S AT STAKE? The Cougars will try to pile on the misery for the Trojans and Pac-12 as a whole if they can pick up a fifth win against the conference this season. Kalani Sitake can become the third BYU coach to win 10 games in consecutive years, joining LaVell Edwards, who did it three times (1979-81, 1983-85, 1989-90), and Bronco Mendenhall (2006-09). USC must win its last two games to become bowl eligible, but that seems unlikely having allowed 38.7 points per game at home. KEY MATCHUP USC QB Jaxson Dart vs. BYU S Malik Moore and Jakob Robinson. The freshman from Kaysville, Utah had been one of the few bright spots for the Trojans, but his first career start against the Bruins dampened some of that enthusiasm. Dart was 27-of-47 passing for 325 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Moore and Robinson each have three interceptions this...
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Retired Saints quarterback Drew Brees finally got a send-off from a packed and loud Superdome. With Brees calling Thursday night’s game between New Orleans and Buffalo as part of the NBC broadcast team, the franchise chose to honor Brees on the field at halftime. With the Southern University band spelling out “Brees #9” on the field, a montage of memorable moments from Brees career played on Superdome video boards before Saints owner Gayle Benson introduced Brees. Cheers erupted, quickly followed by elongated howls of, “Dreeew!” “We’ve experienced so many unbelievable moments on this field and in this city.,” Brees said. “Thank you so much for loving us, thank you for embracing me and my family. We will always love you and we will always work to make you proud.” Brees then raised his fist in the air while urging the crowd to belt out it’s traditional chant of “Who dat, who dat, who dat say they gonna beat them Saints!” “The greatest fans in the world, let’s blow the top off this dome and make the...
Getty Images Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. The Cleveland Browns have a decision to make at the quarterback position and Cam Newton is a new name being pitched as a possible solution for the team going forward. Newton was pitched along with a bevy of other options by The Athletic in an article breaking down the Browns options going forward at the position. The list also included Mitch Trubisky, Jameis Winston, Teddy Bridgewater and Marcus Mariota — who will be free agents this offseason — as well as more “all-in” deals for Pro Bowl players like Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers. Here’s what Zac Jackson had to say about the Browns’ quarterback situation: Impending unrestricted free agents who could be viewed as secondary and/or temporary options by the Browns include Cam Newton, Mariota, Trubisky and Bridgewater. Jameis Winston will be coming off a torn ACL if he hits free agency, so it’s hard to imagine any team seeing him as its top option. Bridgewater feels like a much better fit for Stefanski’s offense than Winston. Jackson maintains the Plan...
