The E! star just became the first Black woman-owned brand to design a plus-size line exclusively for Macy's — and it's officially hitting stores and online May 14. "It's kind of crazy to have that title, but it's really dope to be honest," Parker tells PEOPLE, 41. The Nightly Pop host explains that she was first inspired to create the clothing line because she felt like the choices for her body type were "limited." "I felt like options were kind of few and far between, and it just started to become frustrating. It either was really expensive or...

For some store associates, however, that set off alarm bells — and concerns that it would jeopardize their jobs or dock their pay. Three years later, a union that represents Macy's employees has scored a victory in challenging the tech-based approach and how it cuts them out of commissions. An independent arbitrator ruled last week that Macy's violated its bargaining agreement and said the company must exclude departments, such as men's suits and cosmetics, that have commission-based pay from self-checkout. The grievance was filed by about 600 employees at six stores in the Boston...
New York (CNN)Dresses -- the pretty ones worn to work, cocktail hour or anytime a pick-me-up was needed in the "before times" -- have been in hiding for the past year. But the clothing item that has been relegated to the back of people's closets in the work-from-home era is moving back up. As social activities pick back up, there's a reason to glam up again. Chains like H&M (HNNMY), Anthropologie (URBN) and Macy's (M) say they are seeing increased demand for dresses lately and are introducing new styles to try to cash in on pent-up demand. Retailer Anthropologie said demand is back up from its shoppers for dresses for weddings and other social events. The most recent government retail sales numbers show consumers were in a mood to shop in March, as retail sales surged overall, including an 18.3% jump in clothing sales from the previous month. It comes after a...

Jeff Gennette, chairman and CEO of Macy’s and a Brooklyn resident, presented the forum’s keynote address providing a firsthand account of the pandemic’s effect on the nation’s largest department store. He also talked about shifts in the retail industry that accelerated in 2020 and the company’s expectations for continued growth in both the digital and physical retail spheres. After a 44-0 romp over rival Miramonte to cap a 5-0 season, coach Kevin Macy couldn’t help but think, ‘What if?’ His Campolindo Cougars won’t get a shot at a state title — or any postseason play in this COVID-shortened season — but Macy is confident this team could have made a run. By the end of Friday night, Macy said the Cougars were doing all they could not to run up the score on Miramonte, which fell to 1-4, but the final minutes of the rout were some of the only playing time Campo’s juniors had seen all season. The win was Campolindo’s 10th straight over Miramonte and the 44-point margin of victory the largest in this rivalry since at least 2004. “They were on fire because they hadn’t played all year,” Macy said. Senior quarterback Jacob Griessel opened the scoring for the Cougars with...
In this article WMT M A man shops for clothes in Macy's department store in Herald Square, New York.Trevor Collens | AFP | Getty ImagesCrumpled piles of clothes. Unpacked boxes of inventory. Half-empty shelves. And employees rushing through aisles to grab items for online orders. That's what some consumers are finding as they shop in stores again.  Retailers adapted stores and workforces as more sales moved online during the pandemic. Portions of sales floors became staging areas for curbside pickup. Employees got trained to pack online orders, as well as help with customers in stores. For some retailers, that has turned a store's appearance into an afterthought. Bare spots on shelves and unkempt displays at Walmart prompted a research firm to downgrade its stock earlier this year. Macy's, the storied department store that now must fend off internet savvy rivals, has also faced ridicule for its poor presentation. The coming months may be...

Gennette said business from loyal Macy's customers is already up by 10% from the company's fiscal fourth quarter, which ended in late January. Macy's is just two months its current fiscal quarter. "That's clearly the vaccine starting to take root," he told CNBC's Jim Cramer in a "Mad Money" interview. "We're still taking a conservative view to this year. Macy's said in its fourth-quarter report that it reached 7 million new customers during that time period, with 4 million of them coming through digital channels. Gennette said Tuesday that growth was driven in large part by...

A closed-down Macy’s department store has been given new life as a high school in Vermont. Burlington High School reopened for in-person learning inside the unconventional venue on March 4, several months after the school's usual facilities, at 52 Institute Road, were shuttered in fall 2020 after PCB contamination was detected by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. CDC COULD 'SOON' EASE SCHOOL DISTANCING GUIDELINES TO 3 FEET Now students who have opted in to the school’s hybrid learning program are able to get in-person instruction a few days per week in a space that’s clean and interesting to look at, Interim Principal Lauren McBride told Fox News. Classrooms feature much of the old Macy’s amenities and décor, including fitting room signage, cashier and customer service counters, and retired adverts from Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. It took $3.5 million to convert the space into a functional school, according to McBride. Not to mention moving...

This season, many players in the Bay Area won’t get the same opportunity to make those memories, even as they relish the chance to take the field for the first time in 15 months. The COVID-19 pandemic means more games will be played nearby, and state health guidelines advise against the use of buses or carpools. “It’s going to be completely different,” Sell said. “The bus ride certainly is a unique experience. Century 21 is stitching together a comeback bid. The 60-year-old retailer — whose lower Manhattan flagship famously survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks, only to be shuttered last fall as the coronavirus forced the company into bankruptcy — is plotting a return to its hometown of New York City, as well as a nationwide expansion that could result in a footprint that’s bigger than before. The iconic department store last September filed for Chapter 11, citing a legal dispute with an insurance company over its business-interruption claims. The surprise move shuttered 13 stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida, and shocked generations of bargain-minded fashionistas who flocked to its locations for deep discounts on designer duds from Gucci, Prada and Balenciaga. Now, after acquiring the company’s intellectual property for $9 million in December, the founding Gindi family is seeing opportunities amid a COVID-19 crisis that has devastated retailers...

By: KDKA-TV News Staff PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Planning Commission has approved a Target store at the old Kaufmann’s building downtown, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. Target confirmed in July it had plans to come to downtown Pittsburgh. Jeremy Waldrup, the president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, told KDKA earlier this summer it would be one of Target’s smaller format urban stores, where product selections are geared towards the needs of the neighborhood it’s located in. The Pittsburgh Business Times reports the store will be 22,000 square feet. There will be a primary entrance on Smithfield Street and a secondary entrance on Fifth Avenue, both of which already exist. Macy’s took over the building when it acquired Kaufmann’s department store in 2005. It was then announced in 2015 that Macy’s would close, and the iconic retail space has since been long empty.

RICHMOND (CBS SF) — The Macy’s store at the ailing Hilltop Mall in Richmond will close in March, the chain said Monday in a letter to city and county officials. The closure, which follows the loss of the JC Penney and Sears stores, leaves Walmart as the lone major tenant at the 45-year-old shopping center. Macy’s said the closure would happen between March 14-27, and some 133 employees would be laid off, according to Richmond Mayor Tom Butt. Many in Richmond blame the decision to approve the mall, which opened in September 1976 on land owned by the Chevron refinery at the city’s northern end for the decline of downtown, including the relocation of Macy’s and JC Penney, which were joined at the new center by an Emporium-Capwell store. “A feasibility study showed that a more urban style mall could succeed in downtown, but the City Council rejected that economic...

The layoffs will happen between March 14 and March 27. It’s part of a plan to close 125 stores through 2023 and cut about 2,000 corporate jobs, which the company announced early last year. It is also the latest development for the Hilltop shopping center, for which residents and city officials long hoped for a developer to breathe new life. Agenda materials from Desmone Architects say it’s going to be 20,000 square feet, which is a little smaller than the 22,000 square feet pitched this summer. There will be a primary entrance on Smithfield Street and a secondary entrance on Fifth Avenue, both of which already exist. Macy’s took over the building when it acquired Kaufmann’s department store in 2005. It was then announced...
