Macy’s / Twitter Snoopy and Captain Kirk both appeared in the 1968 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. For Americans all over the nation, the Thanksgiving holiday represents a time for families to gather together and appreciate what they have. Sometimes that means a good meal featuring the traditional fare, including cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, stuffing, and turkey.  While eating is a big part of the day, what is on the television too plays a significant role as well. The National Football League has thrown its flag in the middle of Thanksgiving, broadcasting three games. But before kickoff and the cheers of sports fans ring out from living rooms coast to coast, the broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is nearly as important. Starting in 1924, the parade used to be a celebration of the Christmas holiday. It looked very different from what fans have come to expect today. According to the New York Times, when the parade started, it was a “procession,” which featured animals from the Central Park Zoo, including tigers and elephants.  When the famous balloons...

(CNN)You know what they say, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is all fun and games until one of the balloons goes down. Since the parade started marching balloons around Manhattan in 1927, the massive floating figures have occasionally come untethered, blown clear away, or been punctured, stabbed, deflated and subjected to all sorts of ignominy. Macys Thanksgiving Parade: 6 fun things you may not knowWhile most of the balloon incidents are at least a little humorous (the hubris of man, to create such beasts!), a small handful of accidents have ended with people being seriously injured. Some of those cases have led the parade's organizers to change the rules regarding their most beloved -- and problematic -- parade participants. After all, a deflated Kermit here and there is just the way the parade floats, but there's nothing festive about people getting hurt. 1927: Felix is released to the giant cat motel in the skyImagine you're a parade-goer in 1927. Macy's, which has said its digital sales will hit $10 billion in 2023, up from $7.6 billion in 2020, will likely say no. But given that Macy's dotcom sales have been outpacing same-store revenues for years — and that the company operates 788 stores across its portfolio — begs another question: Is Macy's current management team, led by the "quintessential department store executive," as one retail investor recently characterized Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette, the best choice for leading the nation's largest legacy department store into the new era of retail that is increasingly sophisticated, digital and dominated by digitally-native competitors like Amazon? Both questions have dogged Macy's since...

Singer Macy Gray is working on a petition to change the American flag, according to The Hill. “We’re writing a letter starting with a few congressmen who we think might support us,” Gray said Tuesday, according to The Hill. The singer wrote an op-ed that was published in early June in which she called for a new U.S. flag. She argued that the flag is “tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect.” Gray claimed that the flag should include 52 stars, to represent Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. She also argued that the stripes should be off-white, as white represents purity and innocence. “What if the stars were the colors of ALL of us — your skin tone and mine — like the melanin scale?” Gray wrote. Many readers criticized the piece for being divisive and “anti-American”, according to The Hill. Macy Gray in her studio Macy Gray Grammy-winning artist Macy Gray called for the American flag to be redesigned for Juneteenth. "What if the stars were the colors of ALL of us — your skin tone and mine — like the melanin scale?" she wrote. Insider spoke with Macy Gray about what needs to change and what is precious to her in the US. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. The day before Juneteenth 2021, Grammy-winning artist Macy Gray penned an op-ed calling for the American flag to be redesigned.   "The Confederate battle flag, which was crafted as a symbol of opposition to the abolition of slavery, is just recently tired. We don't see it much anymore. However, on the 6th, when the stormers rained on the nation's most precious hut, waving Old Glory — the memo was received: the American flag is its replacement," Gray wrote. The equating of the confederate flag with the American flag by the acclaimed songstress prompted a swift conservative outcry, which Gray felt, to a certain extent, proved her point that the...

Macy Gray told DailyMail.com she was surprised by Republicans' outrage over her suggestion that the flag should be redesigned to add two stars and turn some of them brown, saying she doesn't see what the 'tragedy is' and that it's 'time for a change' after 60 years of the same design.  Gray sparked debate last week when she wrote in an op-ed for MarketWatch that she believes the Old Glory flag should be replaced because it is 'tattered and divisive.'  She said it had been 'weaponized' by the Capitol rioters and now sends a confusing message which some Americans don't want to salute.  Republicans responded to her remarks by telling her to leave the country if she doesn't like the flag.  In an interview with DailyMail.com, Gray said she is 'absolutely' a proud American and loves her country so was surprised by some critics telling her to leave if she doesn't like the flag.  'I never said that I didn't like my country. I love it here. I never even said I didn't like the flag! I said it was...
Macy Gray doubled down on her push to change the U.S. flag, arguing that it represents "divisiveness and hate" in the modern day.  The Grammy-winning singer recently went viral after penning an op-ed for MarketWatch on Juneteenth in which she called for the flag to receive an update to better reflect America’s past, alleging that it has "replaced" the confederate flag as a symbol of racism and hate.  "America is great," she wrote. "It is beautiful. Pure, it ain’t. It is broken and in pieces." Speaking to Fox 11 in Los Angeles, Gray doubled down on her assertion that the flag has become less and less a symbol of national pride and is now in dire need of an update.  KURT RUSSELL SAYS CELEBRITIES SHOULDN'T VOICE POLITICAL OPINIONS: 'STEP AWAY FROM SAYING ANYTHING' "Why do we have to celebrate a flag that now represents divisiveness and hate?" said the 53-year-old. Singer Macy Gray has sparked outrage by suggesting the United States needs a new flag, claiming the current design is 'tattered, dated, divisive and incorrect' . Gray, 53, made the remark in an op-ed for MarketWatch ahead of Juneteenth, a new federal holiday which commemorates the emancipation of American slaves in 1865.  The crooner's comments caused controversy, with a slew of high-profile Republicans speaking out to slam the idea.  South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem took to Twitter, writing: 'A new flag?! No thanks. Old Glory still waves as a symbol of liberty and justice for all.' Republican Congressman Andy Biggs, who represents Arizona's 5th congressional district, bluntly tweeted: 'If you don’t like the American flag, feel free to leave.' Colorado Rep. She continued, calling the flag "tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect" and claiming that "it no longer represents democracy and freedom." Singer Macy Gray argued in a recent op-ed that a new flag is needed for the United States, saying Old Glory is 'tattered, dated, divisive and incorrect' - and providing a design of her own. Gray, 53, wrote the op-ed for MarketWatch ahead of Juneteenth, which was declared a federal holiday this week and is set to be celebrated on Saturday. In her piece, the 'I Try' singer said the flag needs to be redesigned to represent all Americans, arguing the symbolism of Old Glory was harmed during the Capitol riot.  'Like the Confederate, it is tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect,' Gray wrote of the flag. 'It no longer represents democracy and freedom. It no longer represents ALL of us. It’s not fair to be forced to honor it. It’s time for a new flag.'  Gray put together a proposal for that new flag, with off-white stripes, '52 stars to include D.C. and Puerto Rico,' and stars 'the colors of ALL of us — your skin tone and mine — like the melanin scale.' Grammy-winning singer Macy Gray bashed the American flag as “tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect” in an op-ed published a day before Juneteenth. Gray says it is time for a “new flag” that “represents ALL of us,” as Old Glory “no longer represents democracy and freedom.” In a Thursday op-ed, the “I Try” singer said the American flag has been “hijacked as code for a specific belief.” “God bless those believers, they can have it. Like the Confederate, it is tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect. It no longer represents democracy and freedom. It no longer represents ALL of us. It’s not fair to be forced to honor it. It’s time for a new flag,” Gray wrote before detailing her specific grievances with the existing flag. The R&B singer took issue with the stars, specifically, contending that there should be 52 rather than 50 — one for Washington, DC, and the other for Puerto Rico. Since the former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model was outed by reality star and singer Courtney Stodden for cyberbullying when Stodden, 26 – who identifies as non-binary – was just 16 years old, major retail brands have ceased carrying Teigen’s Cravings by Chrissy Teigen cookware line while the mother of two’s cookbooks appear to still be readily available. Macy Chiasson comes into her UFC Vegas 22 fight against Marion Reneau looking to break into the Top Ten of the women’s bantamweight division.  The mixed martial arts community was rocked by a lot of big news this week, and there was another UFC card on Saturday to cap everything off. Looking at UFC Vegas 22, the card is filled with names that can potentially become top contenders in the coming years. One such name, Macy Chiasson, is the individual to watch heading into this event. Chiasson is a name that may not jump off the page, but for the hardcore MMA fan, she is someone that can make a run in the women’s bantamweight division. At 6-1 her record may not seem impressive, but she is rattled off four of those wins within the UFC, which says a lot that she was already prepared to compete at the highest levels offered in this sport. Her stint on The Ultimate Fighter, along with her current run through the division makes it clear that she is someone that can become a...
Macy's Herald Square Flagship Department Store in Midtown Manhattan New York.Nicolas Economou | NurPhoto | Getty Images Macy's announced Monday a number of management changes as the department store looks to overhaul its business and woo back customers who are increasingly shopping online and avoiding malls during the pandemic. Chief Operations Officer John Harper will be leaving the company on Aug. 1, and the post won't be refilled, the company said. Instead, Marc Mastronardi, chief stores officer, and Dennis Mullahy, chief supply officer, will report directly to CEO Jeff Gennette. Macy's named Laura Miller as its chief information officer, starting March 15. Miller, who previously was chief information officer at InterContinental Hotel Group, will report to directly to Gennette. She replaces Naveen Krishna, who held the title of chief technology officer and is leaving the company. Marla Beck, CEO and co-founder of Bluemercury, is stepping down this summer. Bill Clinton's brother Roger has been spotted for the first time in years as it's emerged that he refuses to ever meet his young grandson. The former President's younger half-brother, 64, looked a little worse for wear in exclusive DailyMail.com photos as he was spotted near his home in Torrance, California, where he has been holed up during the pandemic with his 32-year-old partner Malory Parker. Roger – who has been at the center of scandals for decades – has never met the child who is believed to be his only grandchild, who turned three earlier this month, a family source tells DailyMail.com. The former wannabe rock star walked out on love child Macy Smit's mother Martha Spivey when she was pregnant and has refused to be a part of their lives ever since. When 29-year-old hairstylist Macy's own son was born in February 2018, Roger is said to have sent a picture but made no attempt to see the little boy in person. A family source exclusively told DailyMail.com: 'Macy and her mom are done with trying to have...

Century 21 is stitching together a comeback bid. The 60-year-old retailer — whose lower Manhattan flagship famously survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks, only to be shuttered last fall as the coronavirus forced the company into bankruptcy — is plotting a return to its hometown of New York City, as well as a nationwide expansion that could result in a footprint that’s bigger than before. The iconic department store last September filed for Chapter 11, citing a legal dispute with an insurance company over its business-interruption claims. The surprise move shuttered 13 stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida, and shocked generations of bargain-minded fashionistas who flocked to its locations for deep discounts on designer duds from Gucci, Prada and Balenciaga. Now, after acquiring the company’s intellectual property for $9 million in December, the founding Gindi family is seeing opportunities amid a COVID-19 crisis that has devastated retailers and landlords alike, according to industry insiders. “Plans for the US are very much underway as we speak,” Marc Benitez, the newly appointed president of the company, told The Post...
