toggle audio on and off change volume download audio WTOP's Jason Fraley reviews 'Belfast' Black-and-white Oscar contenders can be tough for critics to recommend to moviegoers. And yet, occasionally one is filled with such heart that it’s bound to be a crowd pleaser. Enter Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film “Belfast,” which won the People’s Choice at the Toronto International Film Festival and is currently in theaters nationwide. Branagh blends childhood nostalgia with political awakening for a wonderful coming-of-age story with enough heart and chops to go the distance for Best Picture. It loosely follows Branagh’s own memories growing up in a blue-collar family in Belfast, Ireland during the tumultuous Troubles between Protestants and Catholics in 1969. The story is told through the eyes of an impressionable young boy named Buddy, who learns life lessons as his neighborhood becomes a literal battleground between religious sects. The cast is exceptional from top to bottom, including the most glamorous parents you can imagine, including Jamie Dornan, who sheds his “Fifty Shades of Grey” kinkiness to play a hardworking father, and Caitriona Balfe, who was...

Haskell Garrett apologizes to Ohio State football fans for losing Saturday’s game to Michigan. While Michigan football fans rejoice winning The Game, Ohio State football captain Haskell Garrett reflected on failing this season’s mission. With a second loss on the year, Ohio State is no longer in contention to make the College Football Playoff. This was a team that could have won a national title. Now, the Buckeyes are hoping Michigan wins again so they can play either Oregon or Utah in the Rose Bowl. Less than a day after losing in Ann Arbor, Garrett shared a heartfelt message over Twitter to Buckeye Nation. A big reason why the Buckeyes lost to the school up north was because Garrett’s position group got dominated at the line of scrimmage. The supposed superhero movie with a difference — aka “Eternals” — arrives this week, and advance buzz is that it’s just not up to Marvel standards. We’ll weigh in on that one next week, but in the meantime, there are some worthwhile options, including Tom Hanks’ tearjerker “Finch” on AppleTV+, the trippy “Spencer,” the tremendous documentary “Attica” and the elegant “Souvenir Part II.” Here’s our roundup. “Finch”: Few actors can carry a one-person feature with the authority of Concord native/double Oscar winner Tom Hanks. As he did with ease in Robert Zemeckis’ 2000 “Cast Away,” Hanks keeps us riveted, even though he’s the only human onscreen. In this Apple TV+ release directed by Miguel Sapochnik (an Emmy winner for “Game of Thrones”) Hanks plays the lone, dying survivor of an apocalypse. The emotional film finds inventor Finch playing Yoda to a robot Jeff (voice of Caleb Landry Jones), which Finch created for his much-loved dog Goodyear (an adorable terrier mix) since he knows his days are numbered. Zemeckis’ presence as a producer is felt here, with his heartwarming tendencies evident...

Watching her granddaughter slump forward in her courtside chair at Wimbledon this summer, evidently distressed and struggling to breathe, Niculina Raducanu was filled with trepidation. To pundits such as John McEnroe (who dispassionately inferred that she had suffered an emotional meltdown), 18-year-old Emma Raducanu might have been just another talented young female British tennis player who appeared to have buckled under the pressure of a big match. At that moment, however, whether or not she won a place in the quarter-finals was of no concern to Niculina. As the 88-year-old told the Mail in a poignant exclusive interview, her only fears were for Emma's health. For this was her Emma — her son Ian's adored daughter who visited her at least twice a year, staying in her third-floor flat in drab, post-Communist Bucharest, in an area known as Sector 2. Emma Raducanu celebrates winning the US Open by kissing the trophy on September 11 She is the girl who looked forward excitedly to the weeks when her 'Mamiya' — an affectionate Romanian term for granny — would fly over...

However, in a 2002 episode, he abruptly left the show, explaining at the time that his character was going off to college. He handed hosting duties off to his "brother," Joe.  On Monday, to mark the show’s 25th anniversary, Steve returned with a video message shared to the Nick Jr. Twitter account. The heartwarming message saw him address his absence from the series.  "You remember how when we were younger we used to run around and hang out with Blue, and find clues, and talk to Mr. Salt, and freak out about the mail, and do all the fun stuff? And then one day, I was like, 'Oh hey, guess what? Big news… I'm leaving,'" Steve recalled PAUL ANKA RECALLS THE MOMENT HE FIRST...
