Macy's, which has said its digital sales will hit $10 billion in 2023, up from $7.6 billion in 2020, will likely say no. But given that Macy's dotcom sales have been outpacing same-store revenues for years — and that the company operates 788 stores across its portfolio — begs another question: Is Macy's current management team, led by the "quintessential department store executive," as one retail investor recently characterized Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette, the best choice for leading the nation's largest legacy department store into the new era of retail that is increasingly sophisticated, digital and dominated by digitally-native competitors like Amazon? Both questions have dogged Macy's since...

And while it might be an attractive move in the short term, some experts are raising red flags about the proposal's long-term logic. Activist shareholder Jana Partners is hoping to tap into what has been a buzzy market for digital retailers that is driving valuations higher. Investors have largely favored tech-focused names since the companies promise faster growth over traditional department store operators. The former have seen sales accelerate as consumers buy more goods online. E-commerce savvy retailers, such as Mytheresa and Zalando, are also considered asset-light because they have few to no stores. This allows management to invest in other areas of the business, like marketing. "The market is willing to pay a big multiple on an e-commerce-oriented business," said Michael Kollender, head of consumer and retail investment banking...

The person said Macy's online business has already drawn interest from firms that would invest in it, in conjunction with a spinoff. Macy's shares spiked nearly 4% Thursday afternoon, following the report, which appeared first in the Wall Street Journal. The retailer's stock has risen more than 107% year to date. A representative from Macy's declined to comment. Jana didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. In a presentation earlier this month, Jana said Macy's online business could be worth about $14 billion, which is higher than $7 billion market value the department store currently has. Jana suggested the split at that time without saying anything about its stake in the department store operator. Macy's had...

The department store chain is asking New York City-based Kaufman Organization to stop a potential deal with Amazon to use the billboard atop its storied Herald Square location, according to a lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan. Analysts at Cowen brought that question to the forefront on Thursday by upgrading Macy's stock to outperform, citing the company's digital innovation efforts and calling it "an American icon reinvented." Macy's shares finished trading up nearly 2% on Thursday. Kohl's stock followed suit, ending the day roughly 1% higher. Both stocks and fellow department store operator Nordstrom fell sharply in early Friday trading. There may be a more lucrative way to play the evolving retail landscape, however, Tocqueville Asset Management portfolio manager John Petrides told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Thursday. "Investing in the big-box retailers has been a roller coaster for five or six years now, at least as the true emergence of e-commerce has hit mainstream," Petrides said. By Jonathan Roeder and Jordyn Holman | Bloomberg News that Amazon.com is planning department stores sent a shudder through retail stocks just as some of the biggest names in the industry were reporting robust earnings, a signal that new challenges await in the beleaguered sector. Amazon will open several physical locations that will compete with department stores, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. The first stores, the Journal reported, are expected to be located in California and Ohio and will be about 30,000 square feet in size, which would be smaller than the typical department store. Amazon, which declined to comment on the report, debuted its Fresh grocery store concept last year in Southern California. The chain of small stores loaded with Amazon-enabled tech is up to eight in Orange and Los Angeles counties. The company also opened its 4-Star store in Glendale and Woodland Hills. Shares of big-box retailers like Target Corp. and Best Buy Co. fell abruptly in early trading on Thursday before recovering later in the day. That’s a sign...

During the retailer's latest fiscal quarter, he said, some people were still not comfortable coming into a store, particularly those in urban areas such as New York City. "There is definitely the different psychology with suburban and the urban customers right now," CEO Jeff Gennette said during an earnings conference call. Many of Macy's stores in suburbs are performing ahead of 2019 levels, he explained, as consumers in those areas feel more comfortable with more space to roam around. The company's city-based stores remain the most challenged as international tourism has yet to come back, and people are more cautious about jamming into crowded spaces. Half-empty shelves. And employees rushing through aisles to grab items for online orders. That's what some consumers are finding as they shop in stores again.  Retailers adapted stores and workforces as more sales moved online during the pandemic. Portions of sales floors became staging areas for curbside pickup. Employees got trained to pack online orders, as well as help with customers in stores. For some retailers, that has turned a store's appearance into an afterthought. Bare spots on shelves and unkempt displays at Walmart prompted a research firm to downgrade its stock earlier this year. Macy's, the storied department store that now must fend off internet savvy rivals, has also faced ridicule for its poor presentation. The coming months may be especially crucial for retailers as they try to woo shoppers back to stores, where sales tend to be more profitable. Consumers have money they've stashed away after saving on commuting...
Some teenagers would rather be at the mall than sitting in class, but these students are sitting in class at the mall. An abandoned Macy’s department store in Vermont has been converted into a school after district officials found toxic industrial chemicals in the old school and its grounds during renovations. While the Downtown Burlington High School students were learning from home, school officials scrambled to find a new safe space toaccommodate half of the nearly 1,000 students plus faculty. The empty department store, which closed in 2018, was transformed during a 10-week, $3.5million renovation. Construction workers added partial walls to make classrooms, converted the home-goods department into a library, remodeled the warehouse into a gym and adapted fitting rooms to become bathrooms, according to the Associated Press. But the department-store-turned-high-school still has remnants of its former glory, including escalators, sparkly white tile floors, bright red carpeting, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors signs, and a large-scale Levi’s jeans advertisement on one of the classroom walls. BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Students who once shopped at a downtown mall in Burlington, Vermont, are now attending high school in the former Macy's department store, with gleaming white tile floors and escalators whisking them to and from classes. The Downtown Burlington High School opened March 4, about six months after school administrators closed the existing school, just under 2 miles away, because toxic industrial chemicals known as PCBs were found in the building and soil during renovations. That left students stuck at home learning remotely for much of the school year during the coronavirus pandemic. As school officials looked for space where students could attend school in-person, they eventually eyed the empty department store, which closed in 2018. He's getting used to the new space every day, he said, and the escalators and elevators are nice features. Math students calculate algebra...

A closed-down Macy’s department store has been given new life as a high school in Vermont. Burlington High School reopened for in-person learning inside the unconventional venue on March 4, several months after the school's usual facilities, at 52 Institute Road, were shuttered in fall 2020 after PCB contamination was detected by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. CDC COULD 'SOON' EASE SCHOOL DISTANCING GUIDELINES TO 3 FEET Now students who have opted in to the school’s hybrid learning program are able to get in-person instruction a few days per week in a space that’s clean and interesting to look at, Interim Principal Lauren McBride told Fox News. Classrooms feature much of the old Macy’s amenities and décor, including fitting room signage, cashier and customer service counters, and retired adverts from Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. It took $3.5 million to convert the space into a functional school, according to McBride. Not to mention moving into the building was a quicker transition and a more cost-effective option than renting trailers. next Image 1 of 2Much of the Macy's original décor is still...
CHICAGO (CBS) — “Disgusting and embarrassing” – that is how Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas describes the possibility of a Target store replacing the iconic Macy’s on the Magnificent Mile. As CBS 2’s Tara Molina reported, Pappas said she called the owners of the space on Tuesday and begged them to do better. Pappas said via Zoom she stands by the comments she has made on the possibility – the current rumor – that a Target store could take Macy’s place as the anchor of Water Tower Place. “Please don’t come in there and sell carrots and celery,” Pappas said. “People would come from all over the world. They arrive at the intersection of Pearson and Michigan — and they...
