Minneapolis city officials are facing backlash for allowing a street to be named after George Floyd who died under the knee of a white police officer in May.  A stretch of a street in the city that includes the place where Floyd was killed will soon be named in his honor. Money magazine just released its list of the best places to live in America in 2020, and the Douglas County community of Parker finished second, behind only Evans, Georgia. After receiving an early heads-up regarding this honor, we headed to Parker on Saturday, September 19, to get a sense of what so impressed Money's minions. What we found was a bucolic community that's very affluent, very white (we saw a single family of color during our visit), and growing like mad. Massive tracts of land are being graded in preparation for new subdivisions that will allow many more people to experience a lifestyle that shows few negative effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. That makes sense: According to updated figures about per capita infection rates, only one in 142 residents of Douglas County has contracted the novel coronavirus, placing it 33rd among Colorado's 64 counties. Nonetheless, most people in the public places we...

Search and Rescue teams found the puppy on a large property in Berry Creek. Photos posted by the department show the puppy in the middle of a large, metal frame surround by ash. They gave him food and water, and dubbed him Trooper -- a fitting name for such a tough little survivor. On Thursday, prosecutors in New York leveled new charges against Lev Parnas, who played a central role in helping Giuliani’s attempt to push Ukrainian officials to boost phony charges against former Vice President Joe Biden. In an indictment against Parnas and his business partner David Correia, prosecutors assert that starting in 2012 the pair solicited investments in a company called Fraud Guarantee, which they claimed would protect consumers. But the business was never launched. Instead the men used the investments for personal expenses,...

A museum pulled a jewelry line that named products after black victims of police brutality following accusations that it capitalized and made a commodity of black trauma.  The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, announced that it cancelled plans to sell the 'Wear Their Names' collection after swift backlash from local activists and social media. 'Justice is not jewelry. Especially not jewelry named after Black bodies. Its heinous,' said local activist Tamika Gadsen. The coach held a zoom press conference where he was specifically asked what allowed Trubisky to win the starting quarterback job. This one’s personal. This one’s different. You get one first-ever hero in your life, and you hope it’s a good one. You hope that hero is the equivalent of your devotion, the equal of the admiration and the affection you invest. That isn’t automatic. Human beings are fragile. They are fallible. They can disappoint you. I got lucky. Tom Seaver never disappointed me. “The amazing thing,” my friend Art Shamsky told me a few years ago, “is that you’d be around Tom and people would always want to shake his hand and say hello and thank him for all the thrills he gave them, and he would smile and act cool, like this was the most natural thing in the world to him.” He shook his head. “And it was only a little later, when he was alone again, when he’d shake his head and say, simply, ‘People have been...

Eventually the story got to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Talibanesque...

By ANDREW SELSKY, Associated Press SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A building at the University of Oregon will no longer be named for an early white settler who supported slavery and who helped draft the state's constitution which barred Black people from living in the territory. After years of pressure from student activists, the university's board of trustees decided Tuesday to rename Deady Hall. The university's first building, it was named for Matthew Deady, who was president of Oregon's constitutional convention in 1857, a federal judge and leader of the university. University President Michael Schill had commissioned a report on Deady in response to demands by students during a 2015 Black Lives Matter protest. The report, published in 2016, determined Deady was a racist. Deady helped shape Oregon's constitution that contained a clause prohibiting Black people from residing in Oregon. It was not repealed until 1927. But Schill decided in 2017...

Getty Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller The Eagles’ never-ending quest for a veteran running back continues late into June. The team may ultimately just roll the dice with the young guys on the roster. Corey Clement has been slowly emerging as a favorite to win the backup spot — or at least the third-string job — behind Miles Sanders. He recently posted a series of Instagram videos showing himself smoothly cutting on a dime and accelerating forcefully on the grass. The fourth-year rusher has 142 carries for 580 yards in three NFL seasons, plus four catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl LII. The Eagles signed Clement to a one-year deal back in late April after initially letting him walk. The 25-year-old instructed his agent to only negotiate with Philadelphia in free agency. “I knew I had a lot left in the tank when it...
Roger Federer has been a name admired by many people. Known for his class and elegance, he has millions of fans all over the world. And there have been many moments in his career where he has been honored or praised upon by his admirers. One such instance that comes to my mind is the renaming of a street in Biel, Switzerland. It’s not just an ordinary street, it is connected to the National Center of Swiss tennis. This is the same center where the Swiss master started his junior tennis career and from then on we can say the rest is history. The street is read as ‘Allee Roger Federer’. “I hope that we will see future champions on the Allée Roger Federer,” – Roger Federer. “I am very moved, I never thought I would see a street named after me,” Roger said. Around 1500 people attended the...
