Newark officer Louis Santiago, 25, faces charges of driving while intoxicated, vehicular homicide, desecrating human remains, and more in the November 1 death of Damian Dymka, a 29-year-old nurse.  His lawyer, Patrick Toscano, confirmed the cop had been drinking alcohol at a local bar when he struck Dymka. He claims Santiago had not drank to a level of intoxication or impairment. The attorney instead argues that the incident was an accident, alleging Dymka was dressed in a werewolf Halloween costume and walking on a darkened stretch of the Garden State Parkway, making him hard to see.  'This was a horrible, horrible accident,' Toscano told NewJersey.com on...
When police told Joseph Wirija that his wife was struck by a car and killed the day after Thanksgiving by a motorist who had plowed through a stop sign in their quiet Pasadena neighborhood, the first thing he asked was whether she suffered. They assured him 33-year-old Yang Yang Liu’s death was instantaneous. The second question he asked was, “Where is the driver?” They declined to provide information, he said. “I should have asked a lot more questions at that point, but I just blanked out,” Wirija, 35, said Monday. Around 11 a.m., Liu set out for a jog on a route she had taken many times before. It usually took her about half an hour to complete it, so Wirija texted her when she didn’t return by noon. About two hours later, he tried calling. He called 20 to 30 times until a police officer picked up around 5 p.m. and said they’d deliver the news in person. Wirija broke out into a cold sweat and began shivering, already bracing himself for the worst....

The boy is now in juvenile detention awaiting a court appearance on all charges, which include sexual battery and forcible sodomy. LEBANON (KDKA) — Friends, family, and community members have been stepping up to help Kara Leo’s family after she died in a freak accident involving a tree branch. 40-year-old Leo and her husband, Jared Quinteros, were hiking along the Morton Ravine Trail at Boyce Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair when a large tree branch fell and struck the South Fayette couple Thursday night. Leo died in the hospital and Quinteros was seriously injured. “Just utter shock, I mean, you just don’t believe it,” said Jeff Iovino, Leo’s friend, and business partner. A bouquet of flowers and a rock with the word ‘angel’ on it lay where the tragic accident happened. Flowers have also been placed outside of Leo’s small business, Kara Kakes, in Mt. Lebanon. “I’m better for knowing her, it’s just odd,” Iovino said. Iovino said the talented baker was one of a kind. He said Leo’s bake shop specialized in nut-free cakes and will be missed greatly by residents. READ MORE: Fallen Tree Branch Hits And Kills Woman In Upper St. Clair Park, Husband Left Injured...

UPDATE: A driver was hospitalized after the raised bed of his roll-off truck struck a railroad bridge and landed on its side Monday morning in Hawthorne, authorities said. The driver apparently had just delivered a trash container and drove off without lowering the bed before it struck the nearby Wagaraw Road bridge at Lincoln Street at 6:49 a.m., said Nancy Snyder, NJ Transit's chief media relations and communications officer. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening, she said, adding that he also received a summons for careless driving. Firefighters cleaned up a large leak from the saddle tank and hydraulic system. “Companies worked for close to 3 hours to contain the spill and secure the scene,” the Hawthorne Fire Department reported. Passaic County HAZMAT also was notified. NJ Transit inspectors later deemed the bridge safe and service was resumed roughly 90 minutes later.
Dashcam video shows the moment eight Michigan deputies lifted an overturned car to rescue a woman trapped beneath it Thursday.  The 24-year-old woman was ejected from her vehicle in a violent crash after a speeding car ran a stop sign and barreled into the side of her red Pontiac, leaving her pinned unconscious underneath. Her two-year-old son, who was in the car with her, was left dangling upside down in a car seat.  Police arrested the man they said was responsible for the crash, 30-year-old parolee Dontonio Temone Nichols, who the Oakland County Sheriff's office said was fleeing a traffic stop for speeding when he blew through the stop sign. A driver from Nutley who fled after his car struck and seriously injured a Lyndhurst pedestrian claimed he’d been carjacked moments earlier and wasn’t behind the wheel, authorities said. It was all a lie, they said. Samuel Torres, 38, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, hindering his arrest and drug-related offenses, records show. Torres was driving a 2017 Toyota Camry when it struck Joy Dempsey, 56, at the corner of Grant and Valley Brook avenues near her home shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. She suffered a fractured hip, back injuries, and head trauma and remained in critical but stable condition Thursday at Hackensack University Medical Center. Detectives recovered surveillance video from the area and other evidence collected by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which helped identify the sedan and Torres. He was released pending a June 23 first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
