HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Rich, Republican and want to be a U.S. senator? Pennsylvania might as well hang a welcome sign. The presidential battleground state’s high-stakes race for an open Senate seat is seeing candidates with big bank accounts and big-time connections exchanging their blue-state mansions for decidedly purple Pennsylvania, and pursuing an opportunity they might never have at home. Introducing Carla Sands, Mehmet Oz — best known as the host of TV’s “Dr. Oz Show” — and David McCormick, all three of whom seem prepared to spend millions of their own dollars to win a Senate seat. Their arrival seems to be a testament to Republican optimism about winning in Pennsylvania, a bellwether state and one of the nation’s biggest presidential electoral prizes, backing Democrat Joe Biden in last year’s election and former President Donald Trump in 2016. It’s also a test in an increasingly nationalized political environment of whether voters care about how deeply their representatives are tied to the state — or whether carpetbagging will be a pivotal issue in next year’s contest to replace retiring two-term...
A man accused of entering the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington D.C. was recently arrested in Orange County and is facing federal charges. Michael G. McCormick has been charged with entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building, according to a newly unsealed criminal complaint filed with a federal court in Washington D.C. According to a sworn statement by an FBI agent filed with the criminal complaint, video footage taken inside the Capitol building on Jan. 6 captured a man investigators have identified as McCormick among the crowd wearing a blue puffer jacket and a blue “Trump 45” winter hat. McCormick flew from Santa Ana to Washington D.C. the day before the riot in the Capitol and flying back the day after, according to the agent’s statement. Based on video footage taken inside the Capitol, McCormick is suspected of entering the building through the Senate Wing Door at 2:55 p.m. Surveillance photos included in the court filings show a smiling man federal investigators have identified as McCormick standing in...

Leading Off ● OH-Sen: Investment banker Mike Gibbons is running a new ad, reportedly backed by a $550,000 buy, that uses clips of venture capitalist J.D. Vance trashing Donald Trump in order to trash Vance himself. "I'm a never-Trump guy. I never liked him," says Vance. "I might have to hold my nose and vote for Hillary Clinton." The ad also references Vance tweets in which he called Trump "an idiot" and "reprehensible." (Vance of course now insists he adores Trump.) These statements have unsurprisingly appeared in other ads attacking Vance, including a spot from the Club for Growth, which is backing former state Treasurer Josh Mandel. Amusingly, though, one person who doesn't appreciate all these efforts to defend Donald Trump's honor is … Donald Trump. According to a new piece from Politico, Trump called Club president David McIntosh to insist that the group...
more   Republican Rich McCormick, running for Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District, previously said four GOP members of Congress had endorsed his candidacy, but on Thursday he said they did not actually endorse him. McCormick said he made a mistake. “I am not a good politician. I’m just going to admit it. I am a good Marine and a good doctor. I have done that for decades, but political speak is difficult for me sometimes when people say ‘I 100 percent support you.’ Some people use language that is very confusing to a guy,” McCormick told The Georgia Star News. “My understanding is that they endorsed me. That’s my mistake, not having that confirmed. Some of them endorsed me in the Seventh [Congressional District race], but they didn’t endorse me because I switched to the Sixth. It is what it is. I made a mistake. I own that. We are going to move on. We are right now collecting our endorsements in writing so that when we do our next release it’ll be far more accurate.” The Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC)...
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — When local candidate Sean Parnell dropped out of the race for U.S. Senate last week, it seemed to open the field to many other candidates. One of those candidates was Dr. Mehmet Oz, who announced on Tuesday. READ MORE: PennDOT Asking For Public Input Ahead Of Bridge Work In Westmoreland CountyWhen Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey announced he was retiring at the end of next year, Republican insiders knew the battle to replace him would be long, contentious and expensive. What was not predicted was how many newcomers to politics and, frankly, recent residents of other states would seek to represent Pennsylvania. There’s already been lots of talk about Oz, who was born in Ohio, raised in Delaware and lived in New Jersey for most of his adult life until he recently rented a home near his in-laws in the Philadelphia suburbs. But Oz is not alone. Long-time Californian Carla Sands, President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Denmark — she gave $250,000 to the Trump campaign — has returned to Pennsylvania where she was born and grew up...
more   Republican Rich McCormick, who in 2020 lost Georgia’s Seventh Congressional District race to Representative Carolyn Bourdeaux (D-GA-07), announced Tuesday he’s running again — but this time for the state’s Sixth Congressional District. McCormick told The Georgia Star News that the newly redrawn Seventh District is now a 65 percent Democrat stronghold. He said any Republican would have a difficult time competing there. “There is nobody that has a claim to the Sixth [District] any more than I do,” McCormick said. “I am the only one who has ever run for Congress that is running in that race right now, and a lot of people who will be voting in that race have already voted for me once.” Republican Jake Evans announced his candidacy for the Sixth District earlier this year. Evans, when asked, downplayed his new competition. “The only Congressional candidate in the nation to lose a Republican incumbent seat in 2020 just flipped into the CD6 race,” Evans told The Star News via text. “I guess he also concluded he couldn’t win the district he ran for...
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The Democratic Florida congressional candidate who lost a special election primary by five votes has filed two lawsuits asking that the result be thrown out, alleging his opponent’s support of a universal income plan amounted to bribing voters. Dale Holness alleges Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s support of a proposal that would pay most U.S. adults $1,000 a month was an attempt to illegally bribe voters. His lawsuit also wants counted 18 overseas mail-in ballots received from military members and others that were rejected by elections officials because they arrived after Election Day and, official said, didn’t qualify for an extension. He also says Cherfilus-McCormick should be disqualified because she did not file a financial disclosure form with the U.S. House. Cherfilus-McCormick, a health-care company executive, won the Nov. 2 primary to replace longtime U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, who died of cancer in April. Florida’s 20th District is overwhelmingly Democratic and she is heavily favored to win the January general election to fill the last year of Hastings’ term. The state certified her victory two weeks ago, saying...

BROWARD (CBSMiami) – Congressional primary race runner-up Dale Holness has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick razor-thin win. Holness claims in the lawsuit that Cherfilus-McCormick “is ineligible to hold office.” CLICK HERE READ THE LAWSUIT Cherfilus-McCormick won the Democratic Primary for the 20th Congressional District by a mere five votes. One of Holness’ claims is that mail-in ballots from military service members were improperly rejected, and the smallest of votes could swing the result. He also pointed to the fact she didn’t file a financial disclosure report with the Clerk of the House of Representatives. Also of note, Holness claims Cherfilus-McCormick’s campaign promise to give adults making less than $75,000 a monthly check of $1,000 was basically a bribe. “The ‘plan’ is intended to offer a false hope to underserved communities with the intention and purpose of procuring votes in return,” the lawsuit read.

(CNN)By the narrowest of margins -- just five votes -- businesswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick appears to have won a South Florida Democratic primary to replace the late US Rep. Alcee Hastings in Washington, according to official results reported by the counties. The outcome in the November 2 election had been up in the air until Friday evening, when the Broward County canvassing board reviewed more than a dozen overseas ballots that were postmarked on Election Day and arrived within the 10-day window to be legally counted. Cherfilus-McCormick had carried a two-vote advantage over Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness into Friday after machine and manual recounts of the results. She picked up three more votes during the counting of overseas ballots, at the conclusion of which Broward County Elections Supervisor Joe Scott declared it was "fair to say (Cherfilus-McCormick) is the apparent winner of the Democratic primary." With her victory Friday, Cherfilus-McCormick is now likely to succeed Hastings, who died in April at age 84 after a two-year fight with pancreatic cancer. A special election for the Democratic nomination in Florida’s 20th Congressional District is still too close to call after a recent recount left two candidates separated by just five votes. The southeast Florida district is one of the most heavily Democratic districts in the state and was represented by the late Rep. The Democratic primary race for Florida's Congressional District 20, which was represented by congressman Alcee Hastings until he died from pancreatic cancer this year, is headed for a recount. CHICAGO (CBS) — What a difference two months make. In mid-July, conventions and big events like the Chicago Auto Show returned to McCormick Place. CBS 2’s Tim McNicholas took us back inside McCormick Place to see how a convention can be held despite a spike in cases. The best brains and greatest gadgets in 3D printing all recently gathered at McCormick Place. But one of the most popular at the convention was a little simpler. “Frankly, everyone’s brought their masks, knowing it,” said Angie Zerlong. The RAPID + TCT conference – one of the 3D printing industry’s largest conferences – was initially planned for April. They also planned from the beginning to spread things out more this year on the convention hall floor. “We designed the floor plan quite differently this year with...
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon freshman linebacker Justin Flowe, who made an immediate impact for the Ducks in his first game this season, is out indefinitely with a right foot injury. Flowe’s injury kept him out of the Ducks’ stunning 35-28 victory Saturday over Ohio State, which pushed Oregon up to No. 4 in the AP Top 25. Coach Mario Cristobal said Monday that Flowe’s injury was “pretty significant” “Always hopeful, but it seems to be a little bit longer term than anything else,” the coach said. Flowe had 14 tackles and a forced fumble in Oregon’s season-opening victory over Fresno State. His tackles were the most for an Oregon freshman since Troy Dye had 14 in a game in 2016 and earned Flowe Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors. Cristobal said the injury was discovered last week. Cristobal also said tight end Cam McCormick is out for the season with a right leg injury. A sixth-year senior, McCormick played in Oregon’s first two games of the season after returning from a 2018 ankle injury that required...
Oregon football head coach Mario Cristobal offers health updates injured Ducks such as Kayvon Thibodeaux, Justin Flowe and Cam McCormick. While Mario Cristobal‘s Oregon football team is sitting pretty at 2-0 and the No. 4 team in the country, the Ducks are dealing with injuries to key players such as Kayvon Thibodeaux, Justin Flowe and Cam McCormick. Cristobal said Flowe’s foot injury is “pretty significant” and it could be of the long-term variety for the talented linebacker who was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for Week 1. While he did not say Thibodeaux was going to be back from his injured ankle for the Week 3 game vs. Stony Brook, the superstar defensive end should be back when Pac-12 play begins. As for McCormick, the tight end’s season is over after suffering his leg injury vs. Ohio State. After hosting Stony Brook on Saturday, the Ducks will begin Pac-12 play vs. the Arizona Wildcats.Oregon football injury updates: Mario Cristobal discusses star players’ healthWhat is important to understand here is Oregon got to 2-0 by going into The Horseshoe and pushing...
On Halloween 2020, an unmarked police car pulled up behind a pickup truck stopped in front of a green light at a busy Denver intersection. The Glendale, Colorado, cop inside called in the plate, anticipating the call would go to the Denver Police Department, but got out to see if the driver was okay. Through tinted windows, he made out John Pacheaco Jr. slumped over the steering wheel. At the time, Pacheaco, 36, had methamphetamine in his system and a warrant out for his arrest for an alleged shooting. But the officer, Bradley Reed, didn’t know any of that. Before he could make contact with Pacheaco, however, dispatch told him the car was stolen. Reed called for backup and pulled his car close to Pacheaco’s rear bumper. Officers Chandler Phillips and Neal McCormick, also with the Glendale PD, arrived on scene in seconds, and Phillips drove his car up to the front of Pacheaco’s truck to block him in on the busy street. Guns drawn, the three officers shined their flashlights in the car, banged on the windows, and attempted...

McCormick Place is a 2.6 million square foot convention center near downtown Chicago. It hosts all kinds of events, such as medical conferences, auto shows, and oddity expositions. The facility is the largest convention center in the US. It was also recently found to be causing huge problems for birds. David Willard, a researcher from the Field Museum, has studied bird collisions for 40 years and recently released a study that outlines his findings. According to his research, every night, up to 200 birds die as a result of crashing into McCormick Place. While this statistic is heartbreaking, the study also provided a solution: turning off the lights at night. On nights when the lights were off, 11 times fewer bird collisions would occur during the spring migration season and 6 times fewer during the fall migration season. Experts estimate that between 365 million and one billion birds die from crashing into glass-sided buildings every year in the U.S. During the daytime, glass often reflects back the sky, and thus, the birds fly right into them without hesitation. At...

SANTA CRUZ — A young couple charged in last year’s death of 55-year-old Graham Hill Road woman Kimberly “Sky” Smith has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder charges ahead of trial. Caitlin Crenshaw  Caitlin “Rose” Crenshaw and Cody “Alex” Brandon Huynh, both 24, accepted a plea bargain deal Wednesday with the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office that will see them each facing at least 30 years in prison for murder, conspiracy, robbery and a special enhancement for use of a deadly weapon. In exchange, several additional special enhancements were dropped that would have barred the two from seeking parole, Assistant District Attorney Conor McCormick said Friday. “Ultimately, I’m happy that this resolution both reflects the incredibly callous and violent acts that these two defendants committed against their (Smith’s parents’) daughter,” McCormick said. “It obviously will not bring Sky back to them, but we hope that this will provide her family with the justice they deserve, as well as justice for Sky.” Cody Huynh  Attempts to reach defense attorneys representing Crenshaw and Huynh for comment were unsuccessful Friday. During a preliminary...
Numerous candidates are vying for a Congressional seat in South Florida left vacant by the late Congressman Alcee Hastings, but only one is putting millions of her own dollars into her campaign. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, CEO of Trinity Health Care Services in Miramar, has contributed $2.3 million of her own finances into her campaign, which is $1 million more than seven other Democratic candidates have raised combined. Cherfilus-McCormick is prepared to contribute more if need be. “I’m not trying to buy a seat at all,” Cherfilus-McCormick said. “I have never played the political game of trying to buy people or anything. It’s always been a ground game and a people-centered campaign. But … I knew that other campaigns were going to take money from different donors and lobbyists.” The special election primary takes place on Nov. 11, where five notable Democrats are vying for the seat. The winner of the primary will likely win the general election, as the district leans blue. State Rep. Bobby DuBose (D-94) announced his...
