Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State is going to play for a championship because of its dominating defense. Oklahoma State wrapped up its first trip to the Big 12 championship game with a 23-0 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday night, completely throttling an offense that hadn't been shut out since 1997. The Cowboys have allowed only one offensive touchdown over their past four games, but this was their first shutout in a conference game or on the road since 1995. "I don’t know what to say, what else to say about the defense," coach Mike Gundy said. "I'm just kind of running out of things to say about them on Saturdays. Hopefully, they can just stay the course." The NCAA said some staff members have received threatening and offensive messages since Oklahoma State basketball coach Mike Boynton identified some by name last week after a one-year postseason ban and other penalties were upheld on appeal. Last year, an NCAA infractions committee hit the Cowboys with the penalties for former assistant coach Lamont Evans accepting up to $22,000 so he could help steer athletes to certain financial advisers. Evans was arrested in 2017, and Oklahoma State fired him. The school said it fully cooperated with the NCAA from the beginning. It felt good about its chances in an appeal, believing the organization would view Evans as a rogue employee acting on his own. After the penalties remained in place, a shocked and emotional Boynton named members of the Appeals Committee and the Committee on Infractions. “They felt good about the work they did while I explain to 17 kids that their dreams of playing in the NCAA Tournament this year couldn’t be realized,” Boynton said. “That’s shameful.” The NCAA said its staff members are getting unacceptable treatment,...
Oklahoma State is playing some of the best defense in program history. The 10th-ranked Cowboys are coming off dominant wins of 55-3 over Kansas and 24-3 over West Virginia the past two weeks. Oklahoma State (8-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 10 CFP) held Kansas to 143 yards, then held West Virginia to 133, the fewest yards it has allowed since 2000. The Cowboys have held consecutive opponents to three or fewer points for the first time since 1934. TCU interim coach Jerry Kill knows what his Horned Frogs are up against on Saturday. “They don’t make mistakes,” he said. “They’re assignment-sound, they play hard, relentless. They’re great tacklers. They tackle very, very well. They tackle and strip as good as any football team I’ve seen in a long time.” Oklahoma State has improved to third nationally in total defense, fourth in rushing defense and ninth in scoring defense. The success has pushed the Cowboys into the College Football Playoff conversation. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said his team has kept things in perspective. “I feel that we’ve got enough...
No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Cincinnati all moved up one spot behind No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama in the second College Football Playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday night. Two Southeastern Conference teams sat atop the ranking for a second straight week, but after Michigan State lost last weekend, at least one spot in the top four was certain to change. The CFP selection committee simply bumped up the Ducks, Buckeyes and Bearcats and dropped Michigan State to No. 7 behind No. 6 Michigan. “It’s worth noting that teams ranked two through six all won, but the committee just didn’t see a separation,” committee chairman and Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said. The Spartans beat the Wolverines 37-33 just two weeks ago, but the head-to-head result didn’t carry the debate with the committee. “The Michigan-Michigan State discussion started last week,” Barta said. “The committee went back and forth. Michigan, statistically, is probably a more complete team.” For the second straight week, Cincinnati set a new mark for best ranking for a team outside...

The NCAA upheld a one-year postseason ban and other penalties against the Oklahoma State men's basketball program on Wednesday. Last year, an NCAA infractions committee panel hit the Cowboys with numerous penalties related to findings that former assistant coach Lamont Evans accepted up to $22,000 in bribes intended to help steer athletes to certain financial advisers. In its appeal, Oklahoma State argued that the infractions panel erroneously classified Oklahoma State’s case at the same level as Evans, stating that the coach’s personal conduct did not provide competitive advantages or benefits to the school. The infractions panel responded by saying holding the school responsible at the same level was consistent with past decisions, and said a member school is responsible for its staff members. The NCAA said Wednesday it had "confirmed the level of the violation that...
Iowa State is back in its familiar October form and right in the thick of the Big 12 race again. Brock Purdy threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns, the defense stopped Oklahoma State inches short on a fourth-and-2 late in the game, and the Cyclones beat the No. 8 Cowboys 24-21 on Saturday. "I’m just so happy for our team," Purdy said. "It just felt good to finish it the right way." The Cyclones (5-2, 3-1) won their third straight to improve to 16-2 in October since 2017, and they won their ninth Big 12 home game in a row, the longest streak of its kind in the league. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has agreed to a new contract that will keep him on a perpetual five-year deal at his alma mater. The OSU/A&M Board of Regents Board of Regents has approved the recommendation from Oklahoma State president Dr. Kayse Shrum and Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg. The school announced the agreement on Friday in a news release that stated further terms will be released at a later date. Gundy, a former Oklahoma State quarterback, has a career record of 143-67 and has led the program to 15 consecutive bowl games. He has coached the Cowboys to four New Year’s Six bowl games since 2010, and the Cowboys have reached The Associated Press Top 10 poll in 10 seasons since 2008, including this season. The eighth-ranked Cowboys take a 6-0 record into Saturday’s game at Iowa State. “Coach Gundy has elevated the Cowboys to among the most consistent winners in college football during his 17-year tenure at Oklahoma State University,” Weiberg said. “The numbers speak to our program’s success under his leadership.” “Stillwater is home, and...
Some things to watch in Week 8 of the Big 12 Conference: GAME OF THE WEEK No. 8 Oklahoma State at Iowa State. While the Cowboys (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) have surprised many with their undefeated start, Iowa State (4-2, 2-1) was a Top 10 team at the beginning of the season before a notable home loss to Iowa and then falling at Baylor in their Big 12 opener. The Cyclones could still get back in position to make their second consecutive Big 12 championship game. A win over Oklahoma State would provide a big boost. No. 8 Oklahoma State has proved it can win close games, and recent history indicates the Cowboys will play another one Saturday when they visit Iowa State. Each of the last six meetings has been decided by seven points or less, with the Cowboys winning all but one. Four of their six wins this season have been by eight points or less. “We’re not physically and skill-wise overwhelming like we were and have been in years past on really good teams where we know that we’re going to come out of this game and win by 20 points,” coach Mike Gundy said. “That’s not the type of football team we have right now.” Oklahoma State (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) in 2021 is built around the conference’s top defense and a middling offense that’s gotten more than expected from running back Jaylen Warren. The transfer from Utah State has run for 218, 123, 125 and 193 yards over the last four games and is the nation’s seventh-leading rusher with an average of 117.5 per game. “I don’t think any of us...

Consider Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy among those who are enamored of what he’ll see up close for the first time this weekend. Oklahoma State stopped Missouri State twice on fourth down during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to hold on for a 23-16 victory on Saturday. The Cowboys botched a kickoff return deep in their own territory after the Bears scored their first touchdown with 3:06 remaining. With the No. 12 Cowboys trying to rally from a second-half hole against second-ranked Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament, Cunningham calmly responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to give his team the lead. Then, he stepped to the foul line and calmly made a series of free throws down the stretch that clinched an 83-74 victory in the semifinal round. “I'm a confident player. I feel like every shot I shoot is supposed to go in,” said Cunningham, the projected No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft. “I try to shoot them with confidence and make plays that my teammates need.” His teammates didn't let him carry the load alone. Avery Anderson III added 20 points, including the go-ahead three-point play with just over two minutes to go, and Rondel Walker had 11 as the No. 5 seed Cowboys (20-7) advanced to play No. 13 Texas for the title Saturday night....
